- In this video a former Toyota Master Tech installs 5.29 gears into my pretty much “stock” Tacoma! Did I make a mistake by going with the 5.29’s instead of 4.88’s??? Watch the install of these East Coast Gear Supply 3rd members and let’s see how the 5.29’s handle with the Overland Torque Tune!

Ran 5.29 on 33 for about two years. No issues and even drove from San Diego to North Carolina and back. they felt great, but now they feel even better on 35s. I feel they march up better and kept me in a better RPM range on 5.29/35s.
What fuel mileage did you get on 33" and 35" on highway 60mph
@@olegm3079 I never cruise at 60 mph lol. But for my normal driving I was getting 2-3 mpg better on 33s than 35s. Just because it felt better on 35s doesn’t mean gas was better
@kahai808 can you give me a number, speed, and fuel economy on 35 please?
@@olegm3079 honestly this is subjected. Factor like gear you have on the truck, weight of truck, weight of wheels, style of driving, etc will drive your fuel economy. Damn roof rack made me lose 2 mpg. For my current truck set up which is pretty bare these days I’m around 12-13 on normal driving. I can get 14-15 if I chill out and drive decent.
Amen! Finally you did it. I see a supercharger in your future. Great combination.
🙏🏼🤣
Been on 5.29s for over a year now and with the OTT its a match made in heaven!!
Mumfy! Good to hear from you man🤙🏼! Congrats on your new podcast👍🏼👍🏼
I got 4:88s on mine running 34 inch tires. She drives great much better than the stock 3.91 gears. Heck I know people running 35s with 4:88s with heavy armor and camper shells and they still say their truck runs great. I went with 4:88 to keep my RPM a little lower at higher speeds for better fuel economy (im getting 16mpg with 34s). Im just a weekend warrior and this is my daily driver but if I ever want 35s in the future I can handle those too. 5:29 definitely does give you more flexibility in regards to larger tires however. I would say 4:88 for tires up to 35s. Fore tires larger than 35s go 5:29
Where does your rpm sit with those size tires at 35-45mph? (The highest speed limit where I live)
I plan on going 5.29 to daily 35s and 33s from time to time. But like the point you've made, I did wanted to keep my RPM low and save gas, as fuel is quite expensive where I live. ($5.27 per gallon).
Nice! Looking forward to your opinion after driving it a bit. You gave me something else to think about. You sir are an enabler.. 😂
🤣🤣🤣 yeah it’s addicting..
5.29 with a tune on 33s is awesome. It has transformed the taco!
I did the Yukon 5.29 couple months ago and also have OTT. I am heavier than you are but the gears are the difference in how the truck runs and works.
Wow, the big move! And we get great content! 🤛
Keep us posted on your fuel efficiency before and after the re-gear
Will do! Stay Tuned!!
Great content @WCT. I wonder what you were 0 to 60 before and after regearing.
I love the content of your channel.
I may have to do 529s on my 23 TRD after moving to MT because my truck will be having a snow plow installed so I can plow our driveway/road.
How are these gears in regards to towing? I have a double axle enclosed trailer I use to move cars around. This would also be going in a sport auto so its an 8in rear, not the 8.75.
Good choice on the 5.29.
You built basically my ideal Tacoma build, only thing id do different is id have Diode Dynamics SS3 pro amber LED fog lights. u did the same size lift, tires and gears and tune id wana do , even the bed size. i want a tacoma soo bad but i think the back seats are too small for my family. i have large car seats but im gonna test drive 1 to be sure but id it is too small , im getting a 2nd gen tundra sr5 with the crewmax and 5.7
Now I’m going to have to order this already did the tune with the supercharger maybe this will give it more go go juice 😅 how much would your guy charge to get it set up on my truck
@@Nano93b I think it would definitely give you the extra bump in torque. My guess is labor would probably be between $800-$1000? Hit him up!
After the ott tune I was pretty happy with the performance of my Tacoma. Haven’t really considered doing gears since my truck is basically stock. I’m curious how your gas mileage is now with the 5.29?
I’ll keep you posted! 👍🏼
Gas mileage isn’t going to be evident unless you get highway miles in 5/6 gears. Could slight be worse in around town just due to being more torq end of the power band but not much loss at all.
I didn’t see the link for Jason to install gears

If I read the screen right you're on 31.64" tires? 265/75/R16? Just curious, I'm on the same size if so with plans to ultimately move up to 33" but not 35" cause I don't wanna mess with CMC and chopping up the truck. I'm considering SPC UCA's to move the tire forward, in theory set up right with a 2" lift that probably won't rub. I'm asking to get an idea of how bad it is with 5.29's until one moves up to 33" then again we're talking 4~5% or so maybe a 100 RPM difference at 60 MPH. I'm leaning to 4.88, truck has about 750 lbs on it when loaded up for camping with bed cover, RTT, armor, boxes etc.
Correct tire size is just under 32". I have no plans to go any larger.. like you, I am trying to stay away from trimming etc.. I will have a video coming out next week once I get my Tune dialed in with the new gears this weekend. Stay tuned for it as I think it will answer alot of these questions. The only weight I have on my truck is the TRD Skid Plate and a tonneau cover. So I am very lite for 5.29's. I'll keep you posted!
@@westcoasttaco yeah we’re on the same tire size, I’m on BF K02’s on 0 offset wheels and they come right to the fender flare. I ended up buying the SPC UCA’s last night.
I’ve had some folks suggest trying the OTT before regear. I might try it because they will support you after regear as well so it’s not wasted money. I feel the truck moves fine, it’s just the 5-6 gear thing that annoys me.
I have an Audi RS3 if I wanna go fast.
PS - what did he charge? I’m being quoted $2420 for just labor. Bout the only part of that quote that makes sense is the 420 cause they’re fuckin high…
@@JamesReedy I’ll go in-depth on my follow up video on the pricing on everything but my guy charged me like $900.00 for the labor.
@@westcoasttaco I got an OTT tune today for shits and giggles, pretty surprised to be honest. It cleans up a lot of my complaints…still will probably regear tho but not at $2500 for labor lol.
@@JamesReedy nice man! Yeah I was the same way… didn’t think the tune would make much of a difference but it’s pretty wild just how much it changes the driveability. Yeah.. I would say anything over a $1,000.00 is nuts for labor.
Only thing that makes me queasy is guys who use an impact to tighten every single bolt. These things have torque specs for a reason. I'm struggling to find a place in the Bay Area to regear with. I got a quote the other day of almost $2500 for labor alone which seems kinda batshit. I'm used to people saying they got it done for $1500 an axle including parts.
Game Changer!!
Can I get the link or website from where you get the gears from ?

I wonder if the RPM increases or decreases. You were going 65mph at around 2100 RPM.
Stay tuned! So far seems like a 200 rpm jump?
Quick question. How is this going to affect the mpg?
So, what was the name of the company that provided the gears?
@@terryhenry8243 East Coast Gear Supply
@westcoasttaco Thanks for the reply. Watched your vid again and it was clearly stated. Dumb me! I have a 22 off road that I would really like to re-gear. Stock everything but I hate the factory gearing. The 3.5 developes power at higher rpms and these slug gears with the 6 speed do it no favors. I may bump the tire size up to the 275x70x16 with no rubbing and stuff sticking out of the fender wells. So, with your experience with the 5.29's how are you liking the set up? Any big change with fuel economy not that it's a big deal as these trucks suck fuel anyway. Curious as to the cost and have you had any issues at all? And, what would be your recommendation for a basically stock truck? Thanks in advance!
Terry
@@terryhenry8243 so far I am loving the setup! I am getting my tune adjusted on Sunday and will post an update on how I am liking it! My truck is pretty close to stock weight and I don't feel like it is over geared at all with the 5.29's. The key to this is getting the Overland Torque Tune with the gears.. it's a beautiful combination. I will be showing my invoice for the cost as well. After it was all said and done for the parts and labor close to $3k.
@@westcoasttaco
I'll be waiting to see your updates! Thanks again!
Terry
How much did the gears and installation cost?
After it was All said and done close to $3k.
Yikes
How much for coat and labor if you don’t mind me asking.
@@VasquezTRD4x4 When it was all said and done.. was close to $2k for the gears and $1k for the labor.
Can Jason do my Taco?
Whats a rough estimate you paid to get re gearing
Between the gears and labor close to 3k
@@westcoasttaco Nice. Less than I assumed it would be.
HOW MUCH ?
Close to 3k after all said and done. I’ll be revealing the invoice on the next video.
Are you going to put on bigger tires?if not why regear?
We will see, but no plans for bigger tires at the moment. I have read and heard that the regear is a huge upgrade regardless of the tire size.. people were right. Regardless of weight and tire size the Tacoma is perfect with a gear and tune upgrade 👍🏼
Have you driven a 3G Tacoma? it's an absolute dog on stock gears, you even touch the pedal at all on the highway even on flat ground it drops out of 6'th gear...
What gear oil you used and what's your new MPG?
Lucas Oil 85-140
How much is OTT paying you to advertise?
Nothing… It’s honestly just the best thing I have done to my Tacoma.. so I try and mention it frequently to help people who are seeing one of my videos for the first time.🤙🏼

Good job making a Tacoma less reliable and less efficient. Add a supercharger next to make this a junkbox.
Just oozing with positivity… lol. As long as you do your homework and know the pros/cons of any mod then who cares? It’s your money. Spend it how you see fit and enjoy.
