I just visited his gravesite last week. General Mundy graduated from Montgomery Alabama and is buried only a few steps away from William Holland Thomas (only white man to be chief of the Cherokees and leader of over 400 Confederate Cherokees).
Howdy Robert! The words in brackets got my attention! I don't know the US-History in details, and even less the tribal history of your redskins. But it makes me curious... I knew there was a confederation of 5 Iroquois tribes and up to today I thought that was the only federal state of native origin. Now you write about a Confederation of Cherokees... Do the Cherokees consist of different tribes? How did William Holland Thomas become their Chief? Was he a Melungeon? According to his name, his Father was of Dutch origins, wasn't he? Was his Mom a squaw or daughter of a squaw or so? Isn't the title of "Chief" hereditary? Was he descendant of a Cherokee Chief? That all sounds pretty unusual and interesting for me, I would really like to learn more about it!

I had the honour of meeting the General back in 1977 (he was a Lieutenant Colonel then (I think)) when I visited the the United States with the Royal Marine Commandos (this was an exchange trip as some US Marines were over in the UK seeing how we did things) and although there were about 20 - 30 of us, he made a point of shaking the hand of each one of us and having a full conversation on an individual basis with every single one of us. He was a true gentleman and Marine, for whom we all came away with the highest respect for.
As a former US Marine myself I have all the respect for you Brits. Our two countries have stood shoulder to shoulder through storm and strife. Continue to march Marine. Carry on.

My parents lived out in the middle of no where. 2 hours from any town of size. But they had an airport that was built by a rich man who flew up to see his daughter. Rest in peace, General Carl Mundy. Thank you for your service to our country.
Met him when I was on a med float in 94. The fact that he stopped and talked to us even though his aides were pushing him to go on. He told them I'll go when I'm ready.I have always thought highly of him before that meeting and even more so after.he was what great leader should be and led by example and took no crap..a great commandant to serve under

"I'll go when I'm ready!" - Love it! That's the right way to talk to an Adjutant sticking to his protocol! LOL!
Just from this phrase, I would say that this officer had an upright and therefor respectworthy character!
What happened to him?

From one Army Vet to a great Marine and soldier. You have earned a heroes reward. Sleep in peace and disregard the bums who know no better than to treat our heroes with scorn. RVN68-69
Respect... from the UK. That's a great turn out to see.
Lived like an Hero. Died as an Legend. RIP General.
My respect and the M1’s give it a majestic touch
Honor Courage Commitment. I remember when CMC Mundy introduced our core values. Also was lucky he was the reviewing officer my first MCRD parade as a Ser O. Semper Fidelis General.
The Marines and all branched of the Military truly know how to honor their comrades.

General Mundy was one of my Commandants when I was active duty. I bumped into him in a crowd in 2004 or later, when I was back home in New York when we were both visiting Ground Zero at the World Trade Center. Our conversation was brief, but he knew which unit I was with. What a coincidence that I discovered this video today on September 11. Fair winds and following seas, General.

HOOAH Sir..Rest in Peace..
Retired Army here
When I always hear our Corps Hymn played slowly.. It gives me goose bumps. I envision men in ww2 storming iwo jima, men saving each other at the chosin res, in Vietnam battling in the jungle, all those past
Marines who never got the chance to be honored I hope we as a nation are doing the best we can to honor All Marines but especially those whom never got a proper salute and gratitude from this nation.. I am proud to be part of a brotherhood with these great men.. Its a honor and a high privilege which I will never forget or dishonor. Semper Fi General. Thanks for years of dedication to country and Corps.. See ya at the gates. "hand salute" er rah!
How can 551 people dislike a true American hero disgraceful and disrespectful. This man dedicated his entire adult life to the Corp and his Country. Rest now Marine. We will take it from here.
Respect from the UK.
He had gentle eyes. Thank you for your service.

Still remember Christmas 1990 in Saudi Arabia when the Commandant spent Christmas with his Son who was a platoon Commander with India 3/3 it was awesome to see him from far away.
Marines have a special brotherhood that is honored to the very end. Semper FI. RIP Sir.

É muito lindo ver nações que honram seus militares.
Even though General Mundy and I shared Waynesville, NC as our hometown, I never had the privilege of meeting the man but he was - and still is - deeply respected by me and countless others. I have been to his grave to pay my respect and clean it up after a storm. It sits atop a hill with a view of the mountains. Fair winds and following seas, General. Semper Fidelis, Master Gunnery Sergeant Cooper
Rest in Peace Sir! Thank you for being the leader that you were.

These guys came from 8th & I, the home of the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
The General always told it like it was and led by example. No bullcrap from him, the country got weaker when he retired. RIP in General, you were a stellar example of how small town boys can succeed and not give up their morals or discipline for political correctness. A shining example of how the country use to be.
his successor could have definitely took a lesson.
general mundy didn't sacrifice his principles for political correctness! he was a good Christian man,his wife was a great woman and Christian, his daughter Elizabeth is a good Christian woman, and both his sons, brigadier general carl e mundy 3,and colonel sam mundy are outstanding marine officers, good Christian men,and like him real nice guys! general mundy was a great officer and marine and an all around outstanding man! there was nothing wrong at all with general carl mundy jr.i have more respect for him than any marine general ever!

His successor was a legacy appointment. I was privileged to have met general Mindy. He was gracious and took the time to talk to lcpl and the enlisted men. A truly fine leader of men

@@johnreed9050 "A legacy appointment"? I don't know of any of the men being discussed here...or doing the discussing. But my only son is a Marine, as was my only uncle. It's very hard to think of the Marines making "a legacy appointment." At 82, it's also very hard to imagine any Marine making such "public" comments as some (not yours) that are recorded here. 8/30/20
Watching this after our drive from meeting you today. I look forward to seeing the museum!
Rest In Peace general. R.lee. Ermy is waiting for you so you could help him guard the gates of heaven Semper fi.

Anybody that has disliked this.... You are not worthy to live in this great nation. Feel free to excuse yourself from our presence.
To the 16 dislikes, this great nation is not for you.
if u really think its a great nation , that brain u got is not for u . great nation have a universal care .
he is not a soldier neither a honorable man or comrade , he is just a victim .
you never have seen combat and never had comrades under fire. so there is no wisdom or understanding in you. better shut up and leave this to people who know what tey are talking about
yes you're right i have never been in any of them and i wish people of this planet will never have too , seen too much suffering and killing have u ever realize why we combat and why we under fire , there is no wisdom in teaching war but we must rather understand who profit making war . u better open up Ur mind and realize it .
vijay rajthala No wisdom in teaching war? How do you think wars are won.
Rest in Heaven my General. It was a blessing to serve under you at Paris Island. Semper Fi
Please just to help my lacking geographic orientation:
Where is "Paris island" located?
Do you mean the center of Paris? The "île de la cité" with Notre Dame on it?
I don't think so, never heard anyone call it "Paris Island" til yet...
Which Island are you talking about?
Is there a "Paris Island" in the Pacific?
Thanks for serving. A real American hero
Outstanding job 8th & I. The Body Bearers did an excellent job. Makes one proud to be a Marine. Semper Fi General Mundy.
