My husband served 31 years as a Chief Air Traffic Controller with the US Navy. He passed 4 years ago, fortunately because of his military record, he was able to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The service that he received was a wonderful honor for the life he chose in serving our Country. What a wonderful service this man also received at sea.
From a citizen of a NATO ally Finland: RIP Lt.j.g. Rockwell-Pate. My sincere condolences to his family. God bless all men and women protecting the free world.

When the ship's CO gave the flag to LTJG Rockwell-Pate's widow, he said to her, "On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Navy and a grateful nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service." I was next to my wife when she received her father's flag. It's a powerful and valued moment for the next of kin.

Thank you the United States Navy for all that you do for a country at sea and land and this soldier in the Navy thank you for his service. May he rest in peace. God bless the navy and God bless his officer, and God bless the United States.
Both my spouse and I served in the U.S. Navy as well. This is a beautiful and honorable ceremony, and so meaningful that Lt Rockwell-Pate served aboard this very ship. It's just very profound that the ship he found his sea legs on, is the very ship that is his final disembark of this world. My uncle served 33yrs in the U.S. Navy, retired and found out he had cancer just a couple years after and passed away in just a few months. He was also buried at sea, he was always happiest when he was underway, and struggled when he was on shore duty, always wanting to get back out. I guess they're both were they love to be. RIP Lt Rockwell-Pate
I’ve participated in one burial at sea aboard the USS MIDWAY in 1981. There were two differences. Our 19 year old sailor was lost at sea while we were working together at night and myself and three other guys tried to save him but we couldn’t and watched as he fell overboard and disappeared under the waves. We searched for his body for two days but he never resurfaced. The other difference was we used an actual empty casket, weighed down, that was dropped from the fantail (back of the ship) into the ocean. An experience I will never forget.
@ thank you Michelle. Losing a fellow Sailor at sea is an experience and a memory that you never forget. Forty one years later I can still see the expression his face and the fear in his eyes as we lost our grip on him as he disappeared into the night under the waves of the sea.
