Thank you, Chris. I really appreciate your comment at 11:30. That's the most important thing and why I am so eagerly awaiting the Taylor Academy 12e TBS (to be shipped) from Austin. Beginner books from Powell's Books have shipped, so maybe the end of this week, I can start learning the guitar (for my 65th birthday). Still learning new tricks, so I'll never be an old dog.
If we don't care about the case or about gloss visually at all, is it worth the extra few hundoes, _sound-wise_ / _playability-wise_ , to get the plus instead of just the 214CE? What about vs the deluxe?
Love your videos! I learnt a lot about acoustic guitars and Taylor thanks to you. I ended up buying a 214ce rosewood because I loved it's sound and price.
One thing about the Plus that makes me glad I went for the plain ole 214 is the satin finish photographs better. The gloss reflects a lot of light and be distracting when I make videos.
I own 3 Taylor's. 210 DLX (2016), Taylor 714ce V-Bracing Western Sunburst (2020), and a T5z Honey Sunburst (2020). The Taylor you're playing has a very nice voice. I'd buy one, but I have more than my share of the balance of acoustic guitars Tayor offers. The 214ce you're playing sounds great!
What’s the little ditty you play from 7:19? You play this quite often in your reviews, and the guy at Acoustic Letter plays the exact same thing. Is there a title for it?
I bought a 214CE and found while I liked the guitar, it had a faulty B string sound..(open string sound Im talking about - fretted was fine ) .It went to the luthier who could see/ hear the problem, but could not solve it. The sound of the string went "dung" for the want of a better word, it would not ring true. I have since returned the guitar and had another 2 x of the same model to choose from - one was worse, one was slightly better - and I have taken that one home but playing it, it still has the same "dungy" sounding B string. So, Im thinking is this a common fault with this model ? Anyone else have the same issue ? I have reached a point where I am returning the guitar for a 314CE which I find does not exhibit the fault. Shame really, I liked the first 214 I had, a Koa model but a bad sounding B string just doesnt cut it for a guitar sold for $2000 here in NZ
Maybe a humidity related problem ? I don't know how is the weather right now in NZ, but I know it's summer there so maybe the guitar could have dried out ? When you press on frets 1 and 14, how is the gap above the 7th fret on your B string ? Should be about less than a credit card, but not touching the fret. If it is a problem only on one string, you should have a close look at your nut too. Maybe the slot of your B string is a bit too deep, causing fret buzz and/or a weak sounding string.
@@bertrandguerra7621 note I said the first guitar has been to a professional luthier, who had gone over the possibilities, and could not solve the problem....so 3 guitars with the same issue - tends to sound like a frequency issue in the design. Hey! Longtime viewer and local San Antonion shopper here, can you guys cover some Luna guitars stuff? They’ve been putting some really interesting makes out there lately.
not really, I purchased the 214ce deluxe sunburst, has upgraded rose gold tuners, abolone rosette, diamond fret markers and the pickups are the upgraded Taylor expression series, has nice white binding all the way around and an African ebony fret board, and a gloss finish, absolutely stunning. I played the standard 214 and it might just be me but I could tell the Deluxe was the better instrument, especially in terms of playability and the sound when played electrically. Also the case that comes with the dlx is amazing, I would have payed 200 plus dollars for it by itself, fits the guitar perfectly and has a beautiful red velvet interior and feels like it could handle being tossed around at the airport.
For the price, there are so many other brands that do solid wood back and sides for the price. The high end taylors are excellent, I find the lower end taylors not so much.
@Jon Howard Yamaha AC5R would be the equivalent to this guitar in terms of price. They use torrefaction for their Sitka tops and solid Rosewood back and sides. It's a concert body style, rather than a grand auditorium, but they do have the cutaway. Made in Japan. If you prefer Mahogany, they also offer it in that setting.
Jon Howard the fender paramount series has all solid woods, spruce and solid mahogany for $400 or $500 or solid spruce with solid East Indian rosewood back and sides for $1000 or around that price

I got a question how do you make the taylors sound loud no feed back when playing live I keep having that issue on my 12 string. that is why I don’t play it no more it has the es2 system. I got a takamine pro series instead no issues there. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it
My question is if I purchase one of these I also have a Taylor 210 I bought used with dings on it I bought a hard shell case for should I swap guitars with the case and gig bag or is it durable enough for a new guitar with no damage?
Yeah, that sucks. The 114ce was the bang for the buck for under $1000 and much better than the 214ce. Cant believe it was discontinued. I bought a PRS SE A50E instead.

Hi Alamo, Hi Christ... Nice review, but could you make a comparison between Taylor 314-ce with Martin gpc16e? I think it's the best comparison around $2000. Thank you...
Hi it's a nice guitar equally good sounding as the high end Taylor series but not sure to recommend to the beginners to buy it as thier first guitar to start with , considering its price point. The reason is very simple as I would like to suggest to others that people should buy , at least, all solid acoustic guitar whichever brand it may be, however the final brand upon thier choice but it should be affordable as everybody is aware that it performs better as it ages.
thongam Chan Respectfully disagreeable, it sounds good, but not nearly equally as good as high end Taylor’s. These guitars (200 series) have a bowed back for strength opposed to a braced back, among other things which reduces the note separation and gives it a mushier (too much sound) sound in chord changes and progressions. But it sounds good. It’s not meant to be made or sound as good as a guitar that cost $1000. more. These guitars are easy on the fingers to play with lighter gauge strings being the standard. I would recommend for beginner, even if you do a little financing. It will get played more, because it’s comfortable and the electronics are built in, simple and sound great. Most folks will buy and sell 4 or 5 cheaper guitars looking for “the one”, when they could have been playing and improving. The 114ce was fantastic for beginners, but they are gone, as he said. Just adding a counter point and more info. Thanks
What an idiot. He gave you the upgrades (though I don’t think he mentioned the tuners). It’s the 214ce with those upgrades, what more did you want? LOL People are dumb
I may just have got a lemon, the b string intonation is significantly off and the timbre of the b and e make timing tricky. Looks like just another disappointment. The only reliable way at this point seems to be a trip (possibly one or more states away) to a reputable store with a large selection and something to lose; something more like buying a dream car. This isn’t about Taylor vs. others; it’s the norm.
Why do you guys never plug these things in? Not everyone is gonna sit on the couch and play unplugged. I'm looking for info on gigging guitars. This video and hundreds more just like it give no indication of how these things sound plugged in.
I picked up and acoustic the other day and was extremely surprised at how light it was. I play an electric guitar and my Schecter is pretty heavy. So I was surprised when the Taylor I picked up weighted nothing in comparison. I was expecting acoustics to have some weight to them.
In order to be resonant the wood cant be too tough and therefore too thick. So yeah, other than the neck everything else is as slim as it can be with the side effect if that low weight
I can't imagine something heavy on my neck. My strat isn't heavy like a Les Paul is, but even with a cloth 4" wide saddle cinch strap, it's like a porch swing on my shoulder.
