Luca Badoer was probably the saddest. He never got anything in F1. Wasn't lucky with getting a good race seat. Then finally, you are in the points (which was hard considering only the first 6 got points), just to have a mechanical failure.
it is sad, but he had a chance with ferrari tho but you know what happened.
@@AimanPF nonsense, Badoer never had the chance to drive that Ferrari (tests were illegal) until the race weekend. He's an hell of a driver and he's the one who developed the Ferraris between 2000 and 2005.
@@mrFoolish565 2009 valencia....
It was almost a full 10 years after his last race start, and the first time driving that car for almost six months, during which it had been upgraded. He was clearly both out of his depth and past his best with Ferrari, but he was the 1992 F3000 champion and was far better than any of his F1 cars in the 90s ever allowed him to be.
Never seen that footage in this quality - you can see he's devastated
I remember watching that race with Badoer and thinking 'Ah thats a pity' when I saw the Minardi breaking down. When I saw him break down crying and practically collapsing beside the car it made me realise that the difference between the top teams and the bottom teams is money, they all work incredibly hard and have to push as far as they can for everything they get in the sport. Those points would have meant the world to Badoer and Minardi back then, I miss that team, proper racers.
The pain in Vettels voice after he hit the barrier makes me wanna cry.
0:18 The marshall just dented that tyre!
Man how do you notice such things...
Those tyres were weak

I cry a bit.
Dominating the race, which is a thing only one man in the world can do(which is achieved by immense talent, training and luck) and THEN that very thing suddenly, easily disappears by something that is not blamable
Yeah life is shit.
Except lewis 🤣
Kimi could probably have had a top 10 just on his own.
Daniel could have just this season, damn that was hard to watch
Bwoah!
2003
Ethan Cage or mika
‘02, ‘03, ‘05, ‘06. McLarens were made of glass.
Massa in Hungary 2008 was sad. Ultimately cost him the title
Yeah, with 3 laps to go after dominating.
Not to mention singapore. No DNF but still heartbreaking
Agreed. That was a big loss for him.
Well let me also remind you that at beginning of 2008 Massa himself lost points due to his own mistakes....Malaysia certainly can be counted to be his own fault and had he managed to avoid that, he could have been champion as well....
So just saying that in 2008 there were too many occasions that you cant say "this is the race/event" where Massa lost the championship.
@@Balnazzardi Yeah, but still. Would the engine just have lasted those 3 laps(12km), he would have been the champ. That is what hurt the most. Whether he made mistakes or not earlier in the season, that is just the biggest bad luck ever.
4:30 i am only one feeling bad to LUCA i mean he really do Hard working but finnish with nothing.
Really feel the emotion behind his helmet, damn, that onion cut
Minardi could've done a double point finish that day
@@emdotrod not quite, but ironically Badoer's DNF lifted Gené from 7th to 6th, which meant *he* was Minardi's only points finisher from 1995 to 2002...
the race marshall said something like "You`ll have another chance....."
He replied "I do not have a second chance" He had only 2 races left with a shit car was going to be a test driver from next season
he didn`t have the second chance
onions being MINCED whenever I see him crying to his car
well it basicly made me cry, as i imagined that happening to me
Will we ever get two such healthy, friendly, fierce, but fair rivals as Michael and Mika again?

Dont worry, the Michael was there for him :)
Apart from everything Kimi has ever said
11. Felipe Massa Hungaroring 2008: Agressive start from p3 to p1. P1 when engine blow 3 laps before the end.
Best ever start, worst ever end
Times like those make you wonder how much of a domino effect that would create to drastically change F1 as it is today. If he won that race, he might not have lost the championship, Lewis would never have won the championship, he wouldn't have won any championship by 2013 and maybe that lack of a title would have prevented Mercedes from having a desire to sign him as a driver and Lewis would perhaps never have a WDC title to this day. Similar to how if Vettel was just .1 seconds slower in qualifying in Monza, he wouldn't have been on pole, perhaps he wouldn't have won the race and maybe never would have secured the Red Bull drive.
It's crazy to think of how one miniscule thing in a split second could drastically reshape F1 for years.
@@shona5512 That's "butterfly effect" :)
That was a great drive from Massa. During qualifying McLaren looked so much faster in every way. So he knew he had to have a perfect start to get ahead of Hamilton. He did it and kept turning on the pace lap after lap. Even Ferrari didn't think they could have that good consistent pace during the race. Great championship battle. Even Lewis was denied a win in Belgium and given to Massa instead for a stupid penalty with a fight with Raikkonen. I guess it evened out at the end of the year.
@@shona5512 the real thing to think about is that if crashgate didn't happen he would have won. Retirements are un fortunately part of the sport, crashgate was not supposed to be.
4:30 his face, you can feel his pain, losing those important points
even worse, he eventually went his entire career without a single point. this was the closest he would ever get.....
@@GreatCdn59 oh nooooooo I wish I didn't read that
Man the minardi retirement was heart breaking I was almost in tears wtf
What made it even worse for Mansell is after the race somebody told him if he'd lost control and gone into the wall, because of where it was, the race would have been red flagged and would not have been restarted due to the race distance elapsed and the results would have been taken from the previous lap... giving Mansell the championship!
Not just gone into the wall, he almost as it was collected the car behind him as it was so if it had snapped he'd probably have wiped out the other car so even more debris and chaos.
Anyone here after Russel retirement, so close to scored a possible point finish 😢
Sad
He was only trying to warm up his tyres 😢😢
Mate this video was a year ago 😂😂😂
In all honesty, i doubt he would have held onto the spot anyway, been on old tyres and the cars around him on fresher rubber, but who knows. I came here thinking of Norris in spa, car letting him down on the pit straight on the last lap.
Here after he was so close to a win... not a dnf but still gut wrenching
Schumacher in Suzuka 2006 was also gut-wrenching...
Was thinking this was going to be on it. I’m still not over it
I dont think because Alonso has retired in Monza
Can't believe that is not on the list. Plus it was key moment in championship battle in 2006
03:26 where Vettel Carrer changed forever
Bottas's DNF in Baku...
Yeah, although maybe that doesn't count as a DNF because he completed over 90% distance 😔
nah, tbh Vettel deserved that one more than Bottas, who only led for a short time
@@Miniz oh yeah, good point
Freddie Barry what about Mika in 2001 Spain on final lap?
@@henrywhatzal4724 That one is already in the video. :)
Respect for Prost for his very mature reaction to the Mansell retirement
Prost was always a gentleman
Luca Badoer, Nurburgring 1999 is my fav because, well, that’s his only point chance evaporating forever because of not his fault
Congratulations
Fun fact: Luca Badoer got to drive a Ferrari for two races in 2009. Unfortunately, he qualified dead last in both of them and got no points.
@@reisanibal1 the reason is because testing was banned for 09 and he hadnt raced in 10 years, at spa i think he set the fastest 2nd sector of the race
Another Mansell gut-wrencher was Hungary 87 when he led the race comfortably and convincingly, only to have a wheel nut come off with just 6 laps to go.
Martin Brundle on Barrichello's Interlagos jinx: "Nobody can be THAT unlucky."
4:02
Mika, it's James. you have to retire, you are overheating
Every winner said He felt sorry for his retired rival, except Alonso...
because he has no sympathy for anyone other than himself
I remember Sutil on Mónaco 2008
Yeah I was a kid these days I almost cried he was one of my favourite drivers
That was brutal, Sutil knew how to drive that car around Monaco that's for sure
It was proven that Sutil had overtaken before Kimi ran into the back of him under the safety car.
Mansell mastery in keeping his car straight and not spinning was nuts.
The Minardi one brought a tear to me eye.
Vettel has yet to recover from that crash, has just piled up since then. Hopefully a fresh start with Aston Martin fixes that
What about Valtteri Bottas? in Azerbaijan
Because valterri wasn't fighting for the championship but rest were either rival winning , winning or a very bad retirement
@@lmao7439 it was a very bad retirement, and he wasn't the same after that

Lando Norris Spa 2019 😢
Lando Norris Mexico 2019
ITS BWOKEN
bwoah-ken
Zhi Han Lee Lando Norris mini Kimi confirmed.
Charles in bahrain 2019🥺
I was nearly crying when Vettel hit the wall in Hockenheim.
I can't BELIEVE you missed Schumacher in Suzuka 2006. I thought it would be #1 for sure. For every Schumacher fan, it's the most traumatic of all memories. The fact that he came so close to a final hurrah, yet agonisingly lost it all in a freak engine failure.
@KoivuTheHab The broken leg wasn't enough? That basically cost him a title since Irvine could have won it
@KoivuTheHab Well if you look at the ones where that happened he did them in slow sections of the track very different from what Senna did to Prost.
@KoivuTheHab Or maybe you are
@KoivuTheHab No, you're just being a troll.
@KoivuTheHab You obviously are so blinkered by hatred that you wouldn't know a fact if it hit you. I will not respond again but I hope you grow up one day.
Anyone get this video after Max’s DNF? Lol
2007 China for Lewis definitely up there.
Stupid and silly mistake from the driver/team....so I wouldnt really put that there, nor any other DNFs that were driver mistakes (like Häkkinen's 1999 and Vettel's 2018)...then again one might also say that Kimi's 2005 DNF was partly self-inflicted as he flat spotted that tyre while trying to lap Villeneuve.
@@Balnazzardi did the title say gut-wrenching mechanical DNF?
@Angga Pratama, nope, but imho its much more gut-wrenching when DNF happens not because of your own fault.....for example I would have much rather put the DNF of Bottas in Baku this year to this list than for example's Vettel's own mistake in Germany.
@@Balnazzardi Lewis Hamilton's right rear tyre was down to its thread ffs
@ Roshan Huded And again whose fault was that? It was both Hamilton's own fault for not demanding stopping earlier and being extra careful at the pit entry when he did finally come to change tyres and it was also Mclaren's fault for not reacting earlier. Anyhow you cant just say that Hamilton was in no way responsible for that because he was....all he needed to do in that race was to get to the finish and he essentially would have been champion.
3:32 the pain in Seb's voice though...
Sutil in the very bad force india in Monaco was very sad too
Unfortunately he would have never got his P4 though, due to getting a 20 second penalty for overtaking under yellow flags...
Bob McAdoo crazy how kimi didn’t get a grid drop
RicsKing94 what could he do, he can’t just wait
I’ve got a different one
2008 Monaco Adrian sutil
Went from 17 to 4 in a backmarker just to get punted by raikkone with 3 laps left
Sadly had the event not happened, he still wouldn't have scored points as he past 3 cars under yellow flags early in the race and would have been hit with a 25 second penalty
If Sebastian Vettel's self-inflicted DNF counts.... Then Lewis Hamilton in 2007 at China definitely needs to be top 3!!
First time and probably the only rookie to win a championship :(
@@Enra000 Don't forget Giuseppe Farina in 1950, tenuous I know :p
He was on such worn tyres, he was down to the tyre thread on his right rear. That was definitely McLaren's fault that fateful day😪
@@adamgregory3536 how could I know, I was -50 mate haha
Roshan Huded yes I can agree it was mclaren’s fault but Lewis should’ve just slowed down a lot and not go that quick in the Pitlane with dry tires
He and mclaren did a stupid mistake that cost him the whole title
I remember watching that Hakkinen retirement (Spain). On the last lap, I could not believe it. The McLaren Mercedes was fast, but a not a very reliable car back then. So gutted for him
Some say that was the price they paid. The car was so good because they were on the limit of technology and parts which also means the chances of something twanging is increased.
Massa in Hungary 2008? He lost 10 pts in that race with just 3 laps remaining or Michael Schmacher in Japan 2006, he retired from the lead with some 10laps remaining.
That Damon Hill one was probably the most brutal, mostly because he was in the lowly Arrows, a backmarker. No matter what you feel about Hill, that was a heartbreaker.
Very sad the retirement of Badoer,we miss so much the Minardi..
Dear F1, I suggest another dramatic and unlucky retirement from the lead. In 1980 at Watkins Glen on the last race of the season Bruno Giacomelli took the first pole position for the Alfa Romeo since 1951. After an excellent start he led the race with a gap of 12 second of difference between Alan Jones with the Williams but on lap 32 a ignition coil had burnt and the engine stopped. When they brought the car to the pits after the race they replaced the burned coil and the engine ignited immediately without problems. For Giacomelli that was a very frustrating moment.
Hamilton's DNF was amazing for me, one of the only races I could watch live with friends in Australia and watching Ricciardo win was probably one of the best moments of my life
Imagine someone's unlucky failure turns into the best moment of your life. Lmao. I'll be back when Lewis won his 7th and most likely 8th title.
@@ParhamAzAre you sure about that? 😂
Everyone else - blown tire, engine failure, gearbox issues etc.
Vettel - drives off on the slowest part of track
All drivers who won after rivals fail on last lap : "I feel very sorry for him!"
Alonso: "Only to lead the last lap is a much better feeling!"
What a great sportsman Alonso is!
Music?
Yeah... Prost, Hamilton and many others like them are just full of shit. Never liked 'em, never will
Silas Wolfsberger I call bullshit because that's not the whole comment from Alonso. But you Alonso haters will find something to whine about. Alonso said that because he had a damaged car at the start of the race and was happy just being in second.
"I nearly finished my race at the first corner, I don't know who pushed me in the back, and I thought that maybe something broke in the back of the car but it felt okay and obviously I lost so much I was happy with the second place. The car was so nice to drive, so quick, and we were pushing McLaren and Kimi so hard until the point that they had a failure in the tyres. We were very lucky today, but at the same point we were also very strong and able to push them like at the beginning of the season, not like the last two races."
Q: A very different sort of win for you, coming as it did with just two laps to go like that.
Fernando Alonso: Yeah, all the other victories I had this year I was leading the race from the beginning to the end, and for me to be leading only on the last lap is a much better feeling!
@@joe.black-mortem.angelos Oh.. Hamilton braking for Bottas in Hungary 2017 when he was 2nd in the championship was not sportsmanship? Stfu.
I feel really bad for Badoer, I mean c'mon man - shittiest team, having 4-th place and lose it because of something you can't do anything about...
A bit like Damon Hill in the Arrows.
and he was certain that this would be his last chance because he would be a test driver from next season
Now THIS is an onion
Malaysia 2016 will always break my heart. Lewis would probably be going for #7 in 2019 and Nico would probably still be racing.
for me 2006 Japanese gp was the most heartbreaking when Michael Schumachers engine broke #keepfightingmichael
Schumacher 2006 suzuka comes to mind, practically ending that championship
Michael Schumacher, Suzuka, 2006. Cost him his eighth championship.
I mean even him winning that race, Alonso coming 2nd. He still would've needed to finish 2nd in brazil.( finished 4th, Alonso on 2nd)
Alonso in Hungary or Italy that very same year were also quite heartbreaking

Senna and kimi didn't say anything and didn't show any emotions.. just to show how they really hurt inside.
That number two spot (Luka Badoer), was heart breaking
Lewis in China 2007... I cried so much 😭
Don’t forget that Alain Prost was leading the 1993 Italian Grand Prix when his engine blew up with just four laps to go, he had to wait until the next race in Portugal where he won his fourth Formula One World Championship.
Damon Hill in the uncompetitive Arrows at the Hungaroring '97 has got to be right up there!
Didn't dnf. Just came in second
@@juhosten3463 you are absolutely correct
Mine was when Raikkonen got a DNF at Abu Dhabi.
Here's what could have made moment #2 sadder: If Minardi had executed their first pit stop better, with the strategy they were on, Luca Badoer would likely have been running for the win of the race.
Also, has there been a more devastating tire failure in Motorsports history than Mansell's at Australia 1986?
This is rather morbid, but at Zandvoort in 1973 Roger Williamson's car crashed and caught fire after suffering a puncture. As he lay trapped in the overturned and burning vehicle, David Purley stopped his own car and sprinted to help, diving into the flames to try to free Williamson, who was calling out for help. As marshals stood by unable to help because of the heat, Purley ran across the track, grabbed an extinguisher and desperately tried to put out the fire before eventually being dragged away. It took eight minutes for the fire engine to arrive by which time Williamson had died of asphyxiation. David Purley's heartbreaking and heroic attempt to save him can be seen in this video ruclips.net/video/afsfHjK1nCI/видео.html
Rubens Barichello probably the greatest driver who never won a championship.
Vamos Rubens!
I'd say Stirling Moss would hold that honour. You've also got top class drivers like Carlos Reutemann and Ricardo Patrese in the 70/80's as well as Fisichella,RSC,Berger,Alesi,Coulthard from the 90's onwards. Rubens was a great driver though, huge respect for him.
Jack Connor Rubens was far better than fisichella, RSC, Berger, Coulthard and Alesi
@@reneamaral5253 I think he was as good as but not better. Alesi has unbelievably bad luck, Coulthard always challeged for wins and sometimes titles, RSC and Fisi never got their fair chance IMO. Same with Nick Heidfeld.
@@reneamaral5253 Berger also was a great of the sport. Another very underrated driver.

Damon Hill Hungary 1997, Nigel Mansell Montreal 1991.
I'm guessing they're in the comments somewhere already but hey. Another vote here.
Prost was so sarcastic at the end
he wasn't sarcastic. He lost the previous years title to reliability just like Mansell and with better luck reliability wise he could've had 6 titles.
The entire 2005 season should be here for Kimi. Not just race retirements but 10-place GRID penalties on weekends he would have dominated.
but for gut wrenching, senna's crash in monaco should be #1 because he was sunnily magical and the crash was completely one of his rare mistakes!

Agreed, the Baku race this year should have been on this list...I would have taken the self-inflicted DNFs like Vettel's 2018 and Mika's 1999 DNFs out of this list and just put DNFs that were not really driver's own fault.
Well, GP Azerbaijan 2018 was heartbreaking too but F1 just leave Valtteri "the forgotten man"/"the wingman" Bottas. Noone remember him.
Balnazzardi yeah. I think F1 just completely forgot the hole thing.
More worthy mentions than Bottas... Schumacher suffering an engine failure at Suzuka when he had the race in his bag
