The street lights give of a lot of glare as if I photo shopped them and wonder if you wouldn't mind advising me on which settings is best for my hero 4 silver and hero 5 for driving through the night and also through the day. It really depends on how you plan to use it. The Hero 5 Session has 4k at 30 fps and is super compact for mounting. The Touch Screen on the Silver comes in pretty handy for composing your shots though, even though it doesn't have the video resolution of the Hero 5 Session. The Hero 5 Black is definitely my new favorite because it has it all.
Yes, a Canon DSLR works great for light painting. Use the Bulb setting to keep the Shutter open and a Canon Timer Remote to set the amount of time you want the open shutter.

You need to switch over from PAL to NTSC. Swipe down from the top of the screen to bring up the Preferences menu. The PAL/NTSC setting is under Regional.
I'm not familiar the SJ cam's settings. Check it out to see if there is a Night Photo Mode with a long shutter option. I don't think it has the option.
Yes, although unfortunately with the hero 5 session the lense exposure time can only be set to a maximum of 5 seconds, not 30 like in this video. So you can do light painting but there isn't enough time to make good ones also like in this video
The longest Shutter time on the Hero 5 Session is 5 seconds, which doesn't really give you enough time for Light Painting. You could add a little bit of light to a scene if you work quickly.

The sensor will only pick up areas of the scene that are touched with light. Since there was no light on my body and I was wearing black, my body didn't show up. Hope that makes sense!
Yes, these settings should work well with steel wool. Find the right exposure for the background first. Try to select an ISO that gives you a long shutter time to "write" as much as possible with the steel wool. Hope that helps.
Hi, Thanks for the tip. I think I said that in the video (I made this quite a few years ago), but if I didn't, I meant too. The only time you wouldn't want to do this is if the background scenery needs to be in the right direction. Otherwise, yeah go backwards.👍
You don't need to write your letters backwards, just flip the photo in post.

No, you don't need to use the Capture app for light painting. All of the "writing" is done during ONE photo, while the shutter stays open.

I used the HERO 5 Black. The maximum Shutter time on the HERO 5 Session is 5 seconds, so it's not really enough time for much light painting.
