  • Crohn's disease nursing review regarding diet, symptoms, pathophysiology, nursing interventions and treatment for NCLEX exam. Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation and ulcers formation in the GI tract.
Crohn's can be found in both the small and large intestine; however, it seems to be most common in the terminal of the ileum and beginning of the colon.
Crohn's disease affects the whole bowel lining which is why its complications are unique when comparing crohn's disease vs ulcerative colitis. Crohn's disease complications include fistulas, fissures, abscesses, malnourishment, strictures which can lead to bowel obstructions, and other changes such as mouth ulcers, skin changes, gall and liver problems etc.
Crohn's disease symptoms include abdominal pain (which tends to be located in the right lower abdomen), ulcers in the mouth and GI lining, anal fissures, diarrhea which can contain pus, mucous, and blood, and undernourishment.
Crohn's disease tends to present in scattered patches throughout the GI tract where healthy areas will be noted next to diseased areas. This will give a cobble-stone appearance during a scope of the GI lining. This is different than ulcerative colitis which tends to start in the rectum and migrate in a continuous fashion through the large intestine without any skipped areas.
Nursing interventions for Crohn's Disease include: educating patient about this condition along with medication and diet regime and smoking cessation, monitoring nutrition status, assessing GI system by monitoring bowel sounds, bowel movements, monitoring administration of TPN (total parenteral nutrition) if ordered, providing ostomy education (if the patient has one).
Medications used to treat Crohn's includes: 5-Aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, Immunosuppression drugs, etc.

Hi Sarah, i wrote my nclex exam yesterday. I watched almost all of your videos and recommend to my friends. You are such a amazing person. I understand secrets behind disease conditions which helped in my exam. My computer shut off at 80 questions, lots of priority questions. I felt my exam easy because of your lecture made me knew everything. I know all of the questions s answer for sure , thank you Sarah for your videos. I highly recommend to students who are preparing for test.

YOU are the reason why I have made it to third semester in nursing school! I LOVE your videos! As soon as I learn a new topic in class I come on RUclips to see if you have a video on it (I wish you had one for irritable bowel syndrome as well since we're covering that too). But I have been studying from your videos since I started nursing school and I couldnt think of a more helpful study tool. After this, I have ONE more semester to go! I'll be watching you until I graduate and get my career started!

I've had Crohn's for over 10 years and you explained it so well. I wish we had doctors like you. When I was first diagnosed, I had no idea what Crohn's was and how I got it. Further into my investigation, mine was brought on by abuse (mentally, physically, and sexually) by my sorry excuse of a father.

Hello, I'm been taking my time reviewing for NCLEX-RN, for like a year now. Been reading Saunders and taking their practice Q&A, Been doing a lot of self study myself. I've recently encountered your videos and i was amazed at how easy it is to understand your tutorials, the first video I've watched was COPD, and whenever I'm face with COPD Q&A, I confidently answered it right. So i kept coming back for more videos that is particularly my weak areas. My exam will be on May 6, 2017, and I want to THANK YOU with ALL my heart, body & soul for doing this incredible job.

Hey guys, wanted to mention that Mesalamine is another 5-aminosalicylate drug that is also a first line option other than Sulfasalazine, (and for pts who are allergic to Sulfa), instead of jumping straight to corticosteriods. This is for Crohn's and UC. Nursing students should definitely be aware of it and people with IBDs. -- Thanks as always for your amazing videos! We all owe you so much!

I’m mostly just going over meds and I have been on most all of these so it’s easier to remember but it’s good to hear someone else. I’m on my 3rd biologic now and I’ve been on steroids many time. Been on cipro/ flagyl, pentasa, Apriso, hycosamine (I know it’s spelled differently but it’s weird), the bile acid sequestration for diarrhea, enteragam, 6MP, budesonide, etc. :p

Hello, I have Crohn's disease and since I've been taking sodium butyrate (bodybio) I've been able to completely do without medication. can do bodybuilding and sometimes eat junk. People with Crohn's, rheumatism and psoriasis have a butyric acid deficiency, but the doctors don't tell you that. this butyric acid does exactly what biologics do. only that it builds your immune system instead of weakening it. Please share this information online.

I usually remind myself and say to myself, "Thank God that I don't have Crohn's disease." I told that to my friend Gabriel Carpentieri who has it and he said, "You're very fortunate and lucky that you don't have it Alan." Today, I'm on day 9 of the 54 rosary novena and sometimes I think of my friend Gabriel and his incurable illness and I always sincerely hope that Gabriel will experience a miraculous cure and recovery. I don't know how long he'll have to endure it but I do know I have him on my rosary novena.

I'm doing my prereqs for nursing school now....the only thing that worries me is that I work full time and have to because I take care of my mother. I've always had good grades and a high gpa but I know nursing school can be rigorous. Is it possible to work full time and go to nursing/graduate school? My ultimate goal is to be a nurse anesthetist or practitioner but I don't have the luxury of not working to go to school.

Hello :) It very much depends. I've known some people who have worked full-time, but it was hard. If you are up for the challenge and prioritize your time very strictly, then you can do it. You may have to alter your work schedule when exams are coming up or if you find that you are having trouble with certain classes. Also, clinicals will take a lot of time up during your week along with attending classes so keep that in mind when trying to work. I would definitely try to find ways you can save money on areas you spend a lot of money and try to budget...in case you have to limit your time working. I wish you the best :)

Hi I am not a nursing student but still I enjoyed the video and learned. I love your teaching style, you make subject interesting for everyone even though its not their subject. My uncle was diagnosed with Chrons disease and removed junction of large and small intestine and connected good with good as you explained in video. Its almost 4 years now and he is doing well. Only problem now he looks much older (late ~50s) but he is just in his early 40s.

Hello :) Thank you very much for watching my videos! I'm so happy they are beneficial for you, even though you are not a nursing student....very awesome! Thank you for sharing that story about your uncle. Yes, bowel resections can really help patients with Crohn's. It is good to hear he is doing better. Thank you again for watching the video and for taking the time to leave this comment ;)
