Yes it's seriously cheap, my MG4 is now £3.50 for a full tank, circa 230 miles. I can't understand how people criticise electric cars, but they're quite happy to waste £1000s a buying petrol or diesel, they are just too lazy to do the maths!

@@H4M24UK that boring old trope, now with bad maths added.
7p overnight goes to 70p at superchargers, so 35 quid.
450 miles should have mean your last 200 miles should have been at 7.5p.

      How about ppl like myself?
Owner of 2 paid off diesels.
One an old '05 fiesta (solid 55mpg) snd the other '16 Nissan Qashqai (50 mpg)
I've never paid more than 13k for a car (all 2nd hand nearly new) but I've been quite able to, but I can do math and I'm not stupid.
Wife is 100% wfh. I work 3.5 miles down the road.
Insurance for Fiesta £180, £260 for Nissan.
Combined annual miles now less than 3k.
VED is £30 and £20 respectively.
Why would I buy a bev / hybrid / phev?
They are cheap to run, cheap to tax (post 2025 ironically cheaper than the £190 applied to EV's!) and insurance is MUCH cheaper.
I have done the numbers against the MGZS and in our scenario nothing stacks up, even taking into account the £216pm loan payments we used to have for the Nissan.
The reality is that in order to get close to ROI with a EV, you ICE scenario needed to include most of these:
      1. 10k + annual mileage away from home
      2. ~33 mpg or worse fuel economy.
      3. Paying the expensive car supplement (which applies to EV's in 2025 btw)
      4. £300-400 VED
      5. Expensive insurance.
      6. Maybe living in or having to travel to a ULEZ city (incidently our diesel Nissan is Euro 6 so also exempt like EV's)
Savings from EV -> ICE doubtless do exist, but they're not as common as the narrative you spout would suggest.
This is more applicable to those who only buy 2nd hand vehicles and who are considering an EV.
Fundamentally sweeping statements from either 'faction' are fruitless, and each person needs to do their own math

Eon Next Drive v3 is still cheaper at 6.9p for 7 hrs off-peak & that is the old rate for last couple of months. It "might" actually drop further come July 1st
No smart charger required, you can even use a granny charger on Eon ND tariff - could save a grand not needing an Ohme installed

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Same reason why I left British Gas about 10 years ago...
But to be fair to Eon ND: - it is FIXED but her's the plus bit
      Originally ND v1 was 9.5p for 7hrs
so I rang them & even though it is fixed for 1 year, they switched us to ND v2 in Jan/Feb
Eon ND v2 was 8p for 7hrs & still no Ohme req...
& they allowed us to move from v1 to v2 in a couple of days to save money on EV & also gas
Then around May, noticed they adjust their rates again for Next Drive v3
      6.9p for 7hrs & gas at 5.5p
So rang them again, yup, they switched us to v3 rates no problem even though it is fixed
      (but no exit fees)
So, they have allowed us to change/switch to a lower revised EV tariff when we noticed it
(would be nice if they automatically notified/switched us, but hey they are in business to make money)
So, they are pretty decent in my mind for us, and we use a LOT of gas, especially in winter
Was just about to switch Octopus after getting a free smart charger finally installed
(Just before we sent the MG4 back)
But just as the Zappi was being installed, we noticed Eon was cheaper, good gas price & is fixed for 12 months, so delayed switching to Octopus Intelligent
Carried on using a granny charger for MG4 like we limped along with grazing every other night say, and charging our other EV on a switchable non-Octopus EV wall charger
(I can do my own load balancing & apply common sense not to go nuts with load management)
TL-DR, end of the day, Eon has been alright & now we have smart meters, 100a fuse upgraded, EV charger(s) etc...
We have found Eon a very good viable option for people who don't have a grand spare to get a Zappi/Ohme installed so they can qualify to get on Octopus Intelligent tariff
My point is, Octopus though they are good & leaders in value for money, for EV charging they are being caught up by others now & the recent announcement dropping to 7p from 7.5p is not exactly calls for street parties
When I think it should have been 6p or at least 6.5p
Eon is 6.9p atm, might even reduce slightly again if they do Eon ND v4 maybe at 6.5p soon ???
General feeling is that this 7% drop is the last drop to come & Martin Lewis said that prices might begin to rise slightly October 1st for winter - the next price cap is set end of August btw
So - plan is, end July, hopefully see if Eon drop Next Drive v4 - say 6.5p kW
Lock in for 12 months starting 1st August, before cap is announced at end of that month
(Eon Next Drive 12 month is still penalty free)
That way, grab cheapest deal, lock it in for winter, no big price increases as it's fixed 12 months
Or see if Octopus actually revise their prices a little better & switch this summer or next year maybe
But yeah, Eon have let us chop & change to cheaper Next Drive tariffs every time we contacted them,
we can keep a close eye on how much we pay & credit on account
I think a lot of firms were sharks years ago, but now with smart meters (didn't want them but with EV, hey ho you gotta agree to them I guess)
Eon are alright in mt book as I've explained
Next Drive v3 works brilliantly for us, EV charging & managing household loads for 7 hrs

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Eon Next Drive v3 is 6.9p per kW & is 7 hours off-peak AND you don't need a specific charger - heck you can use a 3 pin granny charger & get 6.9p per kW for 7hrs. Fixed for a year with also gas or dual fuel option & no exit fees
The catch - day rate is higher about 30p per kW & the standing charge is about 2p higher than Octopus
BUT - if you have solar, maybe with battery storage - the higher day rate won't matter to you
(Eon export rate is 16.5p - more than Octopus 15p per kW)
The pennies you "might" pay each day on Eon ND v3 over Octopus is offset by not having to pay £1,000 for a smart Octopus EV charger, to qualify for Intelligent tariff on Octopus
If you ended up paying 25p a day more on Eon through standing charges & high day rate
(it shouldn't be THAT much more, but let's go with 25p per day more)
That's just over £90 pa more on Eon, but it would take you 11 years to recoup the £1,000 it cost to have say an Ohme installed for Octopus Intelligent tariff
Sorry - but Octopus are slipping behind, I was just about to switch to them, but chose to stay on Eon Next Drive v3 a couple of months ago at 6.9p per kW & don't need an Ohme or smart charger/car
Really thought Octopus would drop to say 6p per kW - not right back to 5p or 5.5p they used to be, but 6p might tempt me to switch...
Yeah - 7p from 7.5p per kW - that's not even the average 7% drop we're expecting from OFGEM average
      (7.5p x 0.93 = 6.975p)
Octopus want to chat to your EV/Charger & charge it at the cheapest possible time (for Octopus)
But will charge you more than Eon Next Drive - who are not spying on your car/charger coz you are using a dumb/granny charger (ok they're monitoring you on the smart meter)
But on Eon Next Drive v3, you didn't need to fork out a grand on a smart charger, that will take you ten years befoire you recoup that cost of the Ohme charger
NOPE - I don't get commission for Eon - there's no link, check the tariff for yourself before people might have to stump up for a new charger to get on Octopus Intelligent
Really thought Octopus would have dropped the rate to 6p or at least 6.5p per kW, but naaahh, I'll stick on Eon Next Drive for a bit longer thanks

Yup, 40p in London to 60p per day std charge in Wales/Merseyside - some of the poorest areas pay more in standing charges.
UK households pay £8bn - EIGHT BILLION in standing charges for Electric & Gas each year, plus whatever businesses pay too
OFGEM is a chocolate teapot imho, Bulb & others went bust before Russia/Ukraine started
Enormous price hike was set August 26th 2022 - before Truss became PM & same day Wholesale gas price was inflated by market manipulation peaking on that day to £7 per therm the day OFGEM set the cap, (26th August 2022, for October 1st 2022. today it's about 80p per therm)
Government doesn't set the price cap - BS
OFGEM is a non-ministerial GOVERNMENTAL body - ergh so it is the government ???
The competition like Buld & others went under because of the OFGEM price cap
Set for 6 months originally, whole gas went up (before Ukraine) to just over £1 per therm
But couldn't charge anymore due to price cap so they was having to sell energy at a loss
      (Ofgem tied their hands)
Bigger 6 energy companies could weather the storm, the smaller guys went bust
Octopus bought Bulb & others, our standing charges shot up to compensate for all the companies failing
      (thanks OFGEM)
Now there is little competition & our standing charges have more than doubled - cheers OFGEM/Government intervention
But let's blame Russia & Liz Truss (even though the price hike cap was set before she was elected as lettuce - ergh leader of Tories)
Yeah - OFGEM is really good, they'll tell UK consumers paying £8bn pa just in standing charges alone

Great tip. I've been switched to them but they retained my old Shell tarrif, which includes a £150 exit fee up until end of Jan25
    WEE TIP FOR OTHERS:
If you're in a similar position and like me, don't use much energy and can wait, you can switch without invoking that fee 49 days before end of contract.
I reckon it won't save me more than that £150 in hte remaining months since I don't have an EV or many large battery items yet, but will have eventually.
So my plan is to keep energy usage low till then.
That said, tarrifs may go up in autumn.
I will also need the whole Smart meter, isolator and charger solution at that point.
Another point worth noting is that Octopus Go (non-smart) is 9p/kWh if you don't have a car/charger they support.
It's still a very good price, but 20% higher than the 7.5p/kWh on Octopus Smart Go that I'm being quoted on their site for my area.

Iam going to have a look.
We have a kona EV and don't use it much (1100 in 3 months).
We are with Eon, and my biggest worry is ,yes you pay less at night but during the day you usually pay a couple of pence extra per kilowatt, and as we use way more on the house than the car iam not sure the maths add up.
But iam off to have a look.

Also do the maths if you need to fork out a grand to get a compatible smart charger first
If you already have a Zappi/Ohme or other Intelligent charger - then away you go to Octopus
If you had a smart car - like a Tesla that did all the talking to Octopus Intelligent - you don't need another wall-charger
Your Kona might not be Intelligent compatible itself and requires a smart Octopus charger to be eligible.
This might cost you a grand to have installed
(My Zappi un-tethered was free as part of salary lease)
For people that have to splash out a grand for a new charger...
If you are paying £100 pa more on Eon during day rate/slightly higher standing charges...
It would take you ten years before you recoup the £1,000 for the Ohme they had installed
Of course the other option, is to put that grand for the Ohme towards a home battery storage system, then pay 6.9p for every kW you use during the day
Or solar setup, but a home battery system on its own is becoming popular for people who can't install much solar
If you already have a compatible charger for Octopus - then go for it
But if not, factor in the time it would take to recoup a new charger - my guess around 10 years

    • @brianiswrong
      @brianiswrong 3 месяца назад +1

      Cheers
We do have a 3 month old ohme wall charger.

    • @authuruksake969
      @authuruksake969 3 месяца назад

@@brianiswrong Oh then go for it I guess
But I'll give you a rundown on the difference is not that much....
We use about 10kW per day for house
Split as 6kW day & 4kW off peak
(we shifted some loads about, but if you aren't doing about 40% off-peak then anybody on E7 is wasting money)
I'll do old rates as Eon haven't announced any Next Drive v4 yet
Octopus day rate is 3p cheaper than Eon ND (28p vs 31p)
      6 x 3p = 18p + 2p cheaper standing charge - so it's 20p cheaper on Octopus
      BUT factor in 6.9p off-peak vs 7.5p (old Octopus) = 0.6p for 7 hours
4kW at 0.6p cheaper than old Octopus Intelligent = 2.4p
THEN factor in average daily EV charging - 6 to 10kW per day average
(42kW to 70kW going to EV if you do lots of mileage ???)
say a rough figure of 8kW per day or 56kW per week EV charging
So in my case I have 4kW daily house off-peak
plus around 8kW daily EV charging average
making up to say 12kW off-peak use
Heck for ease of maths I'll say 10 hours off-peak
10hrs at 0.6p cheaper on Eon Next Drive offpeak (than old Intelligent 7.5p)
So 20p dearer minus 6p = 14p per day more on Eon or £51.10 pa more on Eon
So that would take nearly 20 years - TWENTY YEARS before you recoup a cost of £1,000 Ohme install
And THIS is what I'm trying to point out - yes Octopus in many cases can save people money
BUT it isn't as much as people might think in the end
People are rushing out to have a £1,000 Ohme/Zappi new charger installed
when it may take them 10, 15 or even nearly 20 years before they recoup the investment
(by then the Ohme will be dead - a Zappi, maybe two weeks after 3 year warranty expires)
The cheaper Octopus day rate is only 3p cheaper than Eon at 28p/31p not the std basic variable of 24p
(They have to charge more for peak to recoup the cheaper off-peak rates)
And if people have solar, they are not using any expensive peak/day energy from grid, but their own solar
So the only difference would be a 2p standing charge
      TL-DR
Anyway, you have an Ohme, so you don't need to pay out or recoup the grand for Ohme
But the difference in the savings is not as big as many might think
plus Eon ND v3 will fix it for 12 months, protecting from winter price rises
Unless Octopus drop the rates a little more, I'm sticking with Eon for now
Mostly coz my gas is fixed at 5.5p and we use a LOT of gas - I mean bloody loads of gas
(Missus has heating on 24/7 - whilst everybody else is saying is too warm, I'm sure she has the heating kicking in at night even now when it's 30 degrees during the day)

    • @thepeoplespal5
      @thepeoplespal5 2 месяца назад

Really depends if you can also time shift, washing machine, dishwasher and especially tumble dryer use to times the lower tariff is available. Your current car use is likely to be about 1300 kWh at 7p that is £91pa at 21p that is £273 pa, which is £182 saving per year. If you are like me ,you might have 6000 kWh of electric use per year (no heating) anything less that a 3p a kWh difference (£182 divided by 6000kWh) will be worth while if nothing changes, but if you can time shift and take advantage of additional cheap times, that difference could go up and save you more. There was a 2.53p difference between IGO and normal tariff last time I looked, but it has recently changed again and I don't have the figures atm. This takes into account your ohme wall charger, as it is compatible with the Intelligent Octopus Go (IGO) tariff.
