    Get rid of azaleas that just needed a heavy prune to put in boring boxwoods?

  • @GirlyHR
    @GirlyHR 6 лет назад +27

    If you're taking the Azaleas out I couldn't understand why you tied it back instead of just pruning off the branches. I'd have pruned it all back, dug it out and then put it somewhere else to grow back - it would come back and be lovely in the next year or so and then you keep pruning it and keep it under control it would be a lovely shrub

      You have more leverage to remove the roots if you leave the branches on. It makes it much easier.

    So a plant that has survived 50 years is not worth keeping. They were perfectly placed and would have looked magnificent in flower. They just had some dead branches. Replaced by a boxwood! I wonder if the new plants last fifty years. Some old azaleas cannot be found these days. What a shame.

      I have cut out about 20 azalea bushes out of my yard. They are a bunch of work to maintain. the previous owner of my house decided to turn them into trees so they cannot hold themselves up under the weight while in flower. They are also SUPER close to the house. Which as we know isnt safe. They are incredibly beautiful though.

    I don't understand the reasoning behind saving the hydrangea tree but not the azalea bushes.
    As for using existing plants, you have to first get them. Some people's landscapes have nothing yet.

    I'm surprised they didn't point out that the bare-root hostas that got dug up shouldn't just be left lying around in the sun while you're spending hours on other work. This is not good for even tough plants. They can die if they dry out too much.

    • @amandakelly1555
      @amandakelly1555 6 лет назад

      Best to do it in the winter. Actually they should have cut it back much further. It blooms on new growth so all the old growth can be cut back to the trunk in March and you'll get fresh growth from the trunk with beautiful blooms in the summer.

  • @hebneh
    @hebneh 7 лет назад +3

    If you dig an entire shrub out all at once, you then have a huge and very unwieldy object to deal with. It will not fit into a garbage bin to be taken out with the trash, so you're then going to have to cut it up, and if there's too much to trash at one time, it's going to sit around and look ugly. In the real world, and not a TV program that you're pretending you can do in one day, it's better to gradually cut the thing to pieces, putting them in the trash as you do so. Eventually you'll get to the roots. I speak from experience.

  • @stupiid13

    • @pershop4950
      @pershop4950 7 лет назад +14

      I would have kept the azaleas, especially being that large and they were calling it a 50-year-old azalea (based on knowing the history of that house or yard). Maybe a bit of pruning and it should come back with more vigor.

    • @stupiid13
      @stupiid13 7 лет назад +8

      Per Shop I totally agree with you, my grandmother would do a serious prune to her azaleas when she felt it was needed and they would come back with a vengeance.

      I wish I could find the video for that I saw, but a few landscapers do that because they don't want the cost and hassle of owning something like a skidsteer, but don't want to take the time to dig out a shrub which eats into their profits. I'm sure its there is a good how too on RUclips just not on ToH for legal liabilities.

      I've done that with my little hatchback Audi A3 AWD. No problem. Be careful about tire placement / avoid slippage and ruining spots on the lawn. Mine were near the driveway so I slowly angled around and cinched the chain up tight so would start & stop on pavement.

    That is how you NOT water your plants! Take a hose a water it under a plant, not on leaves, that is how you promote roting and plant disease. Love those homeowners who would love to have something nice but didn`t even try to learn basics.
