I like to think I'm more like Hank Hill now. Yup
I went to one of the larger, most established garden centers in my area and spoke with a landscape architect. For 50 dollars she created a plan for me. She came out to my house, measured the property, and a week later, mailed me a scaled design with plant placement, plant and materials list. She included a price tag if I wanted to hire the garden center to do the work. I did hire them to cut out the sod, install the brick edging, and plant the ornamental trees. My husband and I did the rest ourselves. The end result was gorgeous and aged well through the years. Best 50 I've ever spent. Its to easy to make a bad decision if you lack sufficient knowledge of plants.
That’s what me and my husband are doing! It’s a $65 fee for them to do that stuff and we will hire them to do some of the stuff and we will do the rest! Definitely worth paying the price!

@@kristinanoall In my case I did go to a locally owned place. I am also strictly going to landscape with native plants so I went to a native plant nursery and their website had the prices for the consultation on it.
@@ElizabethHernandez-ib4ud what a great idea! I had been trying to plan out our yard with native plants all by myself-would totally be worth $65 to have a professional do it.
I have a brown thumb but realize I need to up my landscape game. I didn't even know this was even a thing! And so affordable. Thanks for posting Valkyrie.
One quick tip back to you is to lay a sheet down before you prune. When you finish cutting, just drag the sheet to the burn pile or the curb in one trip. Your yard looks awesome! The pressure washer really made a huge difference!

Wow, a lot of criticism. Give this guy some credit for maintaining his home. Every season is a learning experience for us all. I've made some booboos myself. Good job, my friend.

The other 30 % will day dream about getting the job done and let their yards go maybe because of funds or health problems. I don't know at all . But a wise$man told me trying don't hurt nothing at all. The moral of the story is no matter how good we think we are doing someone else will criticize our work . So if you did a video 📹 of your work some one will criticize your work to that is the nature of people . One thing that I do know is that the old saying is what he eat don't make me . you know the rest .world 🌎 just keep living. I’d rather live next door to this fellow then a lot of other people who can’t even be bothered to deal with weeds, pruning, etc.
Nice work- a few other tips. 1.) Place 2" of decomposed granite compacted under pavers to eliminate future settling 2.) Mulch breaks down to organic material which is beneficial to the soil, ditch the landscape fabric and top off each year. 3) save all mulch bags and use as trash bags for other lawn clean up activities - twigs, leaves, weeding ...etc
Agree about the landscape fabric. I just use a thick layer of mulch (purchased from my local nursery by the scoop- just as nice as the bagged and much cheaper + no plastic. They have the natural and dyed as well.) I mulched last year in my beds to replace pine straw and I get very minimal weeds.
Better yet save all your twigs leaves and yard waste to a compost area in the back, pollinators will thank you
Pretty! Remember to break up the roots on any new plants right before you put them in the dirt 😀
Use newspaper instead of of fabric under the mulch. It will keep smother weeds and breakdown over time and help retain moisture.

You did a great job 👍🏼 Thick layers of mulch and pressure washing sure do wonders! I’ve started using no dig landscaping-mow/cut weeds very short then cover with a double layer (or more) of cardboard. It’ll break down over tiMe but it’s better for the soil in case you ever decide to plant anything. Also-keep those hydrangeas watered! If they’re the blue/purple ones, hammer some iron nails in the ground around them to up their color.
Omg I just moved to Ohio from Florida (from a town home to a single family home). I needed to do something cute to this front yard with dead plants. Your video was so easy to watch, and your narrating is so friendly and warm! This is such a refreshing yard video among the many 90s looking ones I’ve found on RUclips! I want to thank you for posting this, I had that small voice that keeps telling me that I can do it myself instead of spending a lot of money for a landscaper. Now that voice is louder and I'm going for it!!

It's a budget video. If you're going to add fabric, then you should use paver base, use a tamper, and edger. Or else it will move again over time. Just a quick cleanup idea for people who don't mind doing it multiple times
Fabric will get the best watering not the plants...
I prefer to put a thick layer of cardboard (decomposes) NOT landscaping fiber. Landscaping fiber lasts forever ...not good 👎

You did an amazing job! Thorn bushes are typically placed under windows to deter burglars. I had them outside my apartment window when I lived on the bottom floor and sleep better knowing they were there.
Get a gun and learn how to use it. Then you’ll sleep like a baby.
That is such a simple solution it should be painfully obvious and I'm kinda mad at myself that I never thought about that. It wont deter 'professional' burglars but somebody spotting an open window might think twice if they try to get in there with the angry plants in front of them. Thank you so much for mentioning it!
Hydrangea- whenever you plant anything from a store pot, loosen up that root ball, just roll it around in your hands until some of the dirt falls off and loosens the rest. Your roots are usually tight in there and they can spread out into the existing ground around it and take root easier, the plant will be healthier in the long run from that 5 seconds of work.
pretty good tip, Unless it's bougainvillea. Bougainvillea hate their roots touched.

I was literally just going to comment that. When he said the person at the nursery told him to keep it's soil and mix it I was looking and instantly was like i hope the plants survived! haha
Move it further from the house before it gets bigger. With plenty of water, a.m. sun and p.m. shade, it will outgrow the space.
This was so incredibly helpful!!! I’m a young woman living on my own and teaching myself how to do “dad” jobs like fixing house things, putting up curtain rods styling the home, using a screw driver, chopping firwood and landscaping the garden. I’m so greatful for youtube and videos like this helping me learn how to do everything on my own so I can be entirely self sufficient and more connected with the earth and my home and my self. So Thank you!!
I’m a single woman, too, Diyanah..I learned to do a lot of Dad jobs and ex- husband jobs, and even work on my mowers. It’s very satisfying. A tip I’ve learned is to always keep the owner’s manual on equipment and even things like directions that come with pull down shades and sink faucets, water heaters, etc and the diagrams and parts list for mowers. Use your eyes to see where the problem is, a lot of stuff is easily repaired and youtube will certainly help when you need ‘professional’ advice!

Tip, once you know exactly how much mulch fills your garden beds next time get a bulk drop off instead of buying at a big box garden center. No more "bunch of plastic bags" and it's often cheaper to buy in bulk. Just schedule it for when you have time to it all the beds and have them drop it off on a tarp in your driveway. This way it's an easy clean up and it's gone in just a day or two of work.
Looks beautiful!!! I see alot of negative comments...even when you clearly said you were no gardener and it was your first time. We all learn by our mistakes and cant learn till we get out try!! Good for you!! Im still learning myself and i bought my house 9 yrs ago. We will get there!! Good job!

@@flam8882 It's actually called a barberry bush. I have them beneath or around any easily accessible window. They are actually quite beautiful and produce red berries in the fall that the birds love. They do require care when pruning because the thorns are wonderful but deadly.

A “weed” is merely a plant that is growing where you don’t want it. One man’s weed is another man’s plant. Dandelions, for example are entirely edible, and one glance at the population tells you people would be better off if they would stop poisoning them, which poisons the insects, and poisons the birds, and poisons everything... And simply harvest them. The leaves are put in mixed salads even at high-end restaurants, and are better tasting when they are smaller rather than mature, the roots are also edible and the flowers can be sautéed the same as mushrooms... And people would be detoxing their livers in the process.
A lot of “weeds” have a great deal of value, but stupid people poison them and then turn around and go to the doctor for the very things that would heal them if they just were smart enough to identify them in their own yard.
Mulching and rocksliding one’s former yards there’s another trend of the idiots that proclaim to the world how stupid they are by doing it to their yards. It’s not “environmental“, it provides absolutely no habitat for anything whatsoever. There are tons of plants that can be used and watered very infrequently, (for all the lazy people, and for those that think the trade-off of not using some water on their plants is somehow going to outweigh all the negative aspects of turning their yards and parking strips into virtual parking lots, which has never been an environmental thing to do).
And no, using different colors to make little patterns doesn’t make it any less of a hideous eyesore, not just to humans, but to all the beneficial insects, birds, bees, and butterflies that are desperately seeking a place for themselves on the face of this earth, to eat, drink water, rest, sleep, socialize, and make a home, while the selfish humans march along, destroying everything in their path.
For all those who have changed their grass plants for rocks and mulch (generational IQ fail), please just go commit some crimes and have yourself thrown into prison or an insane asylum, (very affordable, and you can drool all the same in front of their televisions), where you will fit right in, and you can live in a nice cement and steel building, and you won’t have to have any plants around you at all to contend with. And nature won’t have to contend with you and your stupidity. Win-win.

@@misskim2058 Well, I've got an acre of crunchy brown sticker-infested weeds where I don't want 'em so no guilt trip accepted from those who don't understand that mulch helps retain water in the soil which keeps the plants alive and growing in our drought-tormented 100 degree NorCal summers.
I love the round shrubs especially the variance in sizes. It is appealing to me. Annuals or low perennials around the fronts of them would be a nice pop of color.
Great job! Such a huge improvement. One suggestion for the pavers is to put some concrete adhesive so that the pavers on top aren't easily kicked or toppled over. I did the same with bricks and it was frustrating how often they moved around without the adhesive. Cheers!
Very well done! One thing that I had to learn the hard way was making sure all of my lighting (indoor, outdoor, or landscaping) is all the same temperature. I prefer warm or "soft" white but there's a range of colors from daylight blue to warm white. Having the same bulb coloring on everything gives your home a very cohesive feel.

I was about to hire someone to do similar work for me. But having just seen your video, I’m rethinking that decision. I didn’t realize that doing it myself might not be that big a deal if I just use the right tools-at least for some of the work. Then I can hire someone to do whatever I don’t feel comfortable doing. TIP: Unless you intend to do hard pruning/hedging all the time do NOT plant shrubs such as hydrangeas so close to your house as in this video, particularly since the first 45 -60 cm/ 18-24 inches (depending on your eaves) out from your house is a drought zone. Take the time to find out what the diameter of your shrub will be in its natural or intended hedged state and plant your shrub a minimum of half that distance plus 10cm/4 inches away from the base of your house so that the shrub gets good airflow and water. Putting a shrub in the wrong spot just means a lot of unnecessary work later.
That's what I was thinking, too. Then he said 'brown thumb' and that's obvious. lol He barely dug a hole for his Hydrangea.

Great tip. I made a vegetable bed near the side of the house and it was too far under the eaves, back row never got rain.
One piece of advice. The hydrangea you planted is way too close to your house. The heat from the bricks can actually cook the hydrangea. They can also grow super big and need room away from the side of your house to blossom and grow. Also you need to find out which type of hydrangea you planted. Most hydrangea need particular sunlight such as morning sun and afternoon shade. Be careful pruning also. Some varieties grown on old wood and some grow on new wood. Fertilize with hollytone fertilizer also. They can be truly gorgeous plants but also quite finicky!
I said same thing. They get huge and roots flare out wide.

Hydrangeas are beautiful but so temperamental. I have to always make sure mine are watered enough in the heat otherwise they wilt

As a gardener I wish you would just leave the old mulch as they break down for plant food. 😂 You can always top up with new mulch for the look
sames money on the new mulch too, not that you know, mulch is expensive or anything lol
In the summer my mulch tends to fade from sun and in shady damp places mushrooms will grow. I turn my mulch with a rake periodically and it looks fresh again. When new mulch is needed, I simply dump it on top of old. The old mulch definitely disintegrates and helps to enrich the soil.
Doesn't leaving the old mulch attract termites? I'm having a hard time deciding between rock vs wood mulch for that very reason.
Or start a compost pile.
D L I have not found termites to be attracted to mulch as much as wood structures (wood framing, sheds, decks, etc.) Stone is a bear to weed.
As a gardener i never use landscape fabric and let weed grow just to see what grows and pull out what i don't like. Its surprising what grows when i leave the weeds I've gotten violets, morning glories, corn flower,queen Anne's lace ect. Just from letting weeds grow. Weeds are just flowers growing in the wrong spot. I leave the weeds in my garden to save the bee's
My great grandma had a saying... A weed is only a weed until someone loves it enough to call it a flower.

Sadly doesn't work for me in my garden, I now have brambles, nettles, and copious bindweed from when I didn't have time to keep weeds at bay. Also have four self seeded plum trees, (lovely purple plums, so the only real wild success) a 90 foot long Hamburg Vine that got completely out of hand, and a Virginia Creeper that crept from a neighbour, that has smothered and killed two of my apple trees, and don't even mention the ground elder... :(

in between everything. No longer a sweet innocent looking plant. Obnoxious weed now.
I used to leave a few weeds here and there but it made my flower beds a weedy mess
in a very short period of time that is an endless battle that I'm losing.
No need to keep weeds as the birds will leave plenty in their droppings and the wind
will carry over plenty of seeds from every other yard.
At our old house, we had calla lilies volunteering all over the place. When I would move them to where I wanted them, they would suffer from too much water and/or sun. I learned to put them where they would thrive, donated several to neighbors, and took some with us to the new house. Free flowers!!

That plant you pulled out to put hydrangeas is called a orange rocket Barberry. It gets gorgeous in the fall. I love hydrangeas too, but the barberry is gorgeous in the fall when it gets fiery orange.. Oh, and just top off your mulch with new mulch, sweetheart. Your yard looks terrific.
Exactly what I thought! I gasped as he dug out the barberry (Berberis) that only needed a little hand-pruning. Then later he said he “doesn’t have a green thumb”, and it all made sense. Lol.
You took out a lot of fertilizer by taking out the mulch. And never use colored mulches. It leaches chemicals that are bad for your trees

Some useful advice on here about how this could have been done in a far more eco-friendly way. Agree with others on the plastic weed barrier. Weeds will grow on top of the plastic eventually, and you'll have introduced micro-plastics into the soil and potentially water systems through stormwater. I just use cardboard, it's just as effective for just as long and eventually breaks down and improves the soil as a bonus. And that 'old' mulch looked so healthy, your plants would have loved that being dug into the soil. Live and learn, as they say.

Yes. Careful. My Dad blew a hole in his hand. Luckily it was water only...no chemicals.
Mulch will degrade into humus. Taking out old mulch makes your soil poorer. The trick is to continually add new mulch. Don't chuck out old dirt, and do run your cut branches thru a chipper. You just threw out a ton of nutrients, which you then had to rebuy from the garden shop.
Most mulch has poisons in it. I only use cedar.

Why is he putting landscaping fabric under the mulch. I never do that. I keep the mulch a good thickness and add a bit every year or so. That suffocates the weeds without the fabric.

I'm in my first house that was built around the 30s I think, and there's rock beds around the house with the one on the backside being basically gravel...and the fabric is popping up and I want to replace it all with rubber mulch..but dreading the labor.
I have no idea where to start, and what steps to take.

Awesome stuff!! I spent most of the day today relocating hostas, edging, weeding and mulching. The weeding has always been a battle.

I'm jealous now, it's all so neat and tidy! My house is rented and I can't really do anything about the basics. The uneven patio with gaps, the crumbling front wall and the big crack in the concrete path all make a lot of extra work for me to save from being taken over by weeds, but I do my best. I work with what I have and I've found it's better for my sanity to adopt a 'cottage garden' approach and not try to keep it all too regimented apart from cutting back the shrubs and mowing the lawn. Some of the things that self-seed like the Celandine and Forget-me-nots are very pretty while they last even if they do take over a bit. Some bright Geraniums in pots can also draw the eye nicely away from the tattier parts!

Awesome job man! I’m here in Indiana as well. I did landscaping for a few years, taught me my strong work ethic. Only tip I can give is how much of that could have been composed, but ability isn’t alway there. The new look is awesome!

Good video, short and to the point with speed up when helpful to keep it moving. Love your enthusiasm. Good motivation. I also read all the comments and those from more experienced gardeners were helpful. Think I will not dig out the old old faded mulch in my islands. Just put new stuff on top. Also, I have used cardboard before and it works and is biodegradable. You have to wet it down to get it molded into shape. And it's more effort to do....but cheaper. All in all, this video got me revved up to do things that need doing.....soon as this heat is GONE!!!
I admire your initiative and hard work. My strong recommendation is to think of the mulch as a temporary fix that helps you contain weeds while other plants get started. Ground covers (in Indiana: myrtle, creeping phlox, ginger, threadleaf coreopsis, small hostas) will cover the soil so weeds can't grow--giving you that neat and tidy look you want without needing to buy and refresh mulch repeatedly. If you put these in without landscape fabric to contain them, they'll spread and be beautiful (and easy!). Best of luck and welcome to Indiana.

You ripped out a barberry, which is relatively small and which was planted at a relatively correct distance from the house. You replaced it with a hydrangea, which will be larger at maturity and you planted it too close to the house. You will have a headache in a few years. Sorry, but that’s thentruthngleaned from years of work with shrubs, perennials, and trees.

I am so Happy and Excited that I found your Channel because I lost my Dad 11 months ago!! And it has been pure hell!! But one that that has ALWAYS!! Been his “Baby” was the front Lawn and the decor in front of the house.. I have been trying to give life to all his hopes and dreams for our front yard currently. We bought this house 8 almost 9 years ago and he will tell you he was born with 2 black thumbs NOT!!! Green ones 😂.. So far I have planted 16 miniature rose bushes 🌹 I placed 4 Normal size Rose bushes around his flagpole so when the 2 new ones we just planted grow up and fill in they should fill in all around his flagpole.. I ordered a New Flag, A New Gold Ball top to the flagpole as well as a solar light to shine down upon it.. I also have Solar lights all around our mini pond we built a couple of years after we bought this house. I also planted about 150 perennial’s around the Tree stump from having the tree removed.. We thought about removing the stump but decided against!!! Because it looks beautiful with all the flowers around it and the Spot lights!! And I had two amazing memorial plaques made and I have one placed in front of the Flagpole. And the Second one up closer to the house in front of the Mini Roses bushes.. “His” New outdoor Swing will be here by Wednesday and “His” New Propane Fire pit will be here no later than Friday.. After Christmas(2021) we started saying how much he really wanted to by a new swing and get this fire pit in the spring.. Well he was Diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer on Feb. 9th, 2022, his birthday is May 18th and we lost him on May 25th,2022 💔😞😭 Since we didn’t want to get him them for his birthday just to hurt him because her couldn’t go out and enjoy them we waited and thought it would be a great idea to get them for “Him” or at least in his memory for his birthday this year/1 year memorial Celebration. I sure hope he is looking down on us and knows how much we all love him, Miss him and want to make him proud as well as make the front yard everything he always dreamed of. I love using cresent pavers and large river rock. Just did my house and trees. Looks great and dont have to replace it, ever!!
I would have put in a couple Knock Out roses on the side of the house for pop of color...a planter of flowers by the steps and for sure I would paint the front door a striking color...it can make a house outstanding...but you did a great job freshening up the yard on a budget!
Budget
As I have read though the comments and I am sure you have discovered ... that all gardeners will have their opinions and suggestions on how to treat your landscape ..... I see that you hit your goal for this year ..... However .... I being in that category of gardeners ..... do have a couple of tips for next year or even this year .... I find that keeping the bed soil aerated ( loose ) and amended will make your life and the plants that live in it better ..... also I do not walk in the mulch because that will pack it down and I would never ever use Black mulch .... it has dye in it ..... I only use Leaf mulch it will help feed the soil for the plants ..... Thanks for sharing your experience ..... !!!

Project Build Stuff I think she’s right. No black mulch for the reason she stated. Plus it’s a very harsh look. I’d go with a light brown wood chip. Plant some plants on the side of the house, but not too close to the foundation. They need room to spread out. When I first started my landscaping adventures, I made this mistake! Ugh! Oh well, I left it like it was, but I pulled the bushes out this year after not being able to look at it anymore ;) lol

As I get older I found all of the “curb appeal” adds to the annual maintenance to the property. Mulch next to the house can look good the first year it goes in. The previous owner of my home put down a large amount of mulch. Especially in two locations. A raised flowerbed (pavers) outside of a main room in the house and a playground with landscaping timber surrounding the area. Both turned out to have large numbers of ant colonies (luckily nondestructive) in them. The playground had termites in the timber. Both areas had been neglected for several years. I mitigated pests in both areas and seeded.
I added curved mulch areas to the front of the house. I later removed the mulch, reseeded and it’s the nicest looking grass in the yard. Working on the rest now.
When you add to curb appeal, remember what you put in only looks good if you maintain it. When you sell the property it has to look it’s best. This can mean you have to maintain it while you’re not living there and renters generally couldn’t care less.
We have sandy soil. So I chose a nice small river rock to go in my flowerbeds next to the house. Termites love the paths of least resistance so I am not taking chances!
Pressure washing my home is my favorite chore. Always on a really hot day.

This gives me a bunch of ideas for landscaping I've been wanting to do and didn't know how to start.
Might have been mentioned, but a tip for the future or others watching: String lines work great for a straight line, but not loosely laid out. Tie it off on stakes and pull it taunt. A tight string is straight.
Another tip is to lay out your edging stones on top of the grass before digging, so you can get the right circumference for the blocks without gaps or cuts. Then just cut the sod with your shovel around the blocks.
