Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Cantonese language.
Cantonese is the traditional prestige variety of Yue Chinese, a Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan languages originating from the city of Guangzhou (historically known as Canton) and its surrounding Pearl River Delta, with over 82.4 million native speakers, making it one of the most spoken languages in the world. Cantonese is viewed as a vital and inseparable part of the cultural identity of its native speakers across large swaths of southeastern China, Hong Kong, and Macau, as well as in overseas communities. In mainland China, it is the lingua franca of the province of Guangdong and neighboring areas such as Guangxi. It is also the dominant and co-official language of Hong Kong and Macau. Cantonese is also widely spoken among Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia (most notably in Vietnam and Malaysia, as well as in Singapore and Cambodia to a lesser extent) and the Western world.
The Cantonese people, or Yue people, are a Han Chinese subgroup originating from or residing in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi (collectively known as Liangguang or, with other regions, Lingnan), in southern mainland China. With the migration of the Cantonese people to nearby Hong Kong and Macau, as well as in many overseas communities, Cantonese culture has become an influential cultural force in the international community. It forms the basis of the cultures of Hong Kong and Macau. English words of Chinese borrowed many terms from Cantonese. Cantonese culture is considered to be a commercial, oceanic culture that embodies the history of the region: Its foundation consists of a mix of Han Chinese and Nanyue (especially the Tang dynasty's and Song dynasty's) influences, having preserved a considerable amount of Tang-Song cultural heritages not preserved in other branches of modern Han Chinese cultures. The Cantonese region later became the Ming Empire's main contact point with Western Europeans via commerce, and thus came to include European ideas in its arts and philosophy.

I love Hong Kong's Cantonese! I'm a Chinese (Hokkien + 1/4 Peranakan) Singaporean, and grew up with a lot of Hong Kong Shows/Movies + Taiwanese ones. So it makes me happy to see this!
올해 광둥어가 구글번역기에 늦게서야 등록됬습니다.
그 다음 구글번역기에 나올 중국어족 언어로 대만 민남어가 나왔으면 바람입니다.

I was so excited to hear that there's Cantonese on Google translate from this year! 😊
Next : Hongkong Cantonese vs Guangzhou Cantonese, please :)
These are very clear pronunciations of HK Cantonese words. In actual everyday speech, word-initial "ng" is frequently dropped, and word-initial "n" is often pronounced as "l" (there are many other sound alternations). Native speakers often consider these pronunciations to be "lazy sounds", but honestly you don't sound like an HK local if you don't pronounce these sounds in such ways in most informal situations.
It's scary to me realizing how some words have similar sounds to African languages, specifically Ngbo

Even I'm on a 50/50 read and spoken Taiwanese Mandarin 台灣國語 but I sucked to write any symbols I can still practicing 🤞🤞 need a cross fingers because I liked two of Chinese traditional languages, very challenging to me and hopefully at the very end 💯 I'm gonna passed!
Much more ancient and older from mandarin. This should have been the national language
Even though it's just one word , the word for yes is the same as japanese.

Considering that Cantonese is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin or Chinese, are there any false friends between Cantonese or Mandarin or Chinese, yes or no?
No, Chinese languages do not work like in do European languages. But there are some characters which means different in Cantonese and in Mandarin so, in word no in terms of characo yes.
Mandarin and Chinese can have the same characters that sound the same, and sometimes sound different. For example, the word is hit is pronounced the same way in both cantonese and mandarin.
@@NetajiSubhash265This is your linguistics ignorance. Many linguistics studies in the western world has identified that Cantonese and Mandarin are different languages rather than dialects.
@@chrisluong0852it sound the same but not the tones
What distinguishes it from standard Cantonese?
you could argue this is the standard,or a prescribed form of Canto. What people call "lazy tone" is actually the most common pronunciation, but it's not indicated in the romanization or this video's audio.
@@13Voorheespt2 Can you show me some differences? And why can't they pronounce the ŋ sound?
@@rarearyantroops it's not that it can't be pronounced, but that the phonemic development of the language lost them. As far as an example of differences:Prescriptivists might insist on using the velar nasal initial, but consider a phrase like "I love you." -"Ngo5 oi3 nei5" in Jyutping. Native speakers will more naturally say "o5 oi3 lei5."
@@13Voorheespt2
Nice to know that, thank you.
no, nei, kokoko
Obviously, this language is different from Mandarin or Chinese, plus it isn't mutually intelligible, Obviously not is it, yes or no?
Now with English grammar 😂
The similarity is somewhere on the spectrum of Spanish, Galician, and Portuguese. Mandarin and Cantonese both evolved from Middle Chinese. They split around the 12/13th century
@@why_are_you_gae6729 you’re crazy. Cantonese and Mandarin are not mutually intelligible, while Portuguese and Galician are dialects of the same language, which in turn has high intelligibility with Spanish (Castilian).
@@dsp6373 I speak both mandarin and Cantonese.
@@why_are_you_gae6729 you’re bilingual. Good for you.

Cantonese is a dialect
Most linguistics affirmed that Cantonese is a language than a dialect, such an ignorance 😂😂
