Here in Taiwan life is very good. It’s safe, laws are not too strict and it’s probably the best place to live. Btw, I was born in north Europe and have been living in Australia for years and I still think Taiwan is better than all the places I’ve been living so far. Plus... it’s quite affordable here too.

I lived in China for 3 years and I moved back to Australia a year ago. I genuinely regret leaving and whenever I see videos like this, I really miss China. I love the lifestyle of China and I believe the negative things you point out in this video are definitely all true BUT I think there are many positives that far outweigh the negatives. The life I lead in China was so relaxed and just easy but here in Australia I honestly often just feel stressed.

There were definitely times I missed living in the outskirts of Hangzhou (like when I had to listen to the same line dancing music outside of my window from August to January 2021 😭).

冬冬 (I hope I guessed it right),
    1. I enjoy your video.
    2. I am a 100% Chinese born in Hong Kong, received my post-secondary education in the U.S. and naturalized as a U.S. citizen since the beginning of the millennium.
    3. You are young and, dare I say, attractive, who grew up in the privileged post-門*安*天 era. (These 3 words, shown in reverse, immediately trigger censorship!)
    4. You mentioned that you have a choice. But how many of our Chinese brothers and sisters, in the mainland and now even in HK, can say the same? [no politics, just facts]
    5. I too can never find myself living in HK again, due to mostly the same reasons you listed.
    6. I will never forget the scene in which hundreds of Chinese toddlers waving their Mao's Red Flag Booklets across the Pearl River Bridge between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. That's what a communist country does to their own children. Total propaganda. They had no choice.
    7. Sincerely wish you and your family a good future. The kids you may have someday is going to grow up in a totally different communist China I experienced.
    8. Best wishes!

There is brainwashing everywhere, just turn on the TV in America and you'll see it. It's just a little more subtle. Just drive down any street in America and you'll see American flags everywhere. Oh I guess that's different, Americans are just patriotic, Chinese are nationalistic/propagandized. You should open your eyes and see the whole picture.

Great video! Thank you for explaining the differences. It's quite sad but it seems like the trend is very similar in many highly populated cities. Which makes sense to a degree when comparing things such as cleanliness, maintenance and overall build quality of the city to other areas as you've mentioned but still i find that isn't enough to justify the high cost. However, it still makes life very stressful when wages seem to have been quite stagnant yet the cost of living has gone up 2-3 times sometimes even 4 times as you've mentioned comparing Hong Kong to China.

If you live on the island or eat in international restaurants then what you say is true, but eating at local restaurants and buying food from wet markets is crazy cheap. My favorite meal is rice noodles and 10 dumplings, I get super full, and it only costs $45 HKD (5.80USD). I'm curious about the difference in costs of transportation between HK and Hangzhou. Same or different?

Unfortunately, Hong Kong isn’t the same as it was 20+ years ago. It was a true world city. Some of my friends still go there to visit family, but most say that they will never live there again. Many large companies are now moving their Asian headquarters out of Hong Kong to Singapore, Manila, Seoul, Taipei, etc… Back in the late 90s you could get a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment in Shenzhen (across the China border) for $75-$80 per month.

In terms of people, from my experience, Chinese people are warm, polite and extremely helpful despite the language barrier. Only a few times I felt tad humiliated when someone (mostly elderly) ignored and asked us to leave with hand gesture. Later I thought and realized they didn’t mean to be rude, it’s just that they felt uncomfortable because of my language. Never had any issues in HK, on the contrary I found many HK residents more British than the Londoners :))

It’s very interesting to get your perspective & am glad you both seem happy with your choices. I lived in Hong Kong too for a number of years and enjoyed it a great deal, but it has to be said I lived all the time I was there in pretty privileged conditions, 2,500 sq ft apartments, very well paid etc. During the time I lived in Hong Kong, I only visited mainland China (Beijing) and areas close to HK occasionally and it was very different then than it is now. By the way I’m from the UK and now live here again, although I also lived in many other countries than HK over the years, mainly in the Middle and Far East, also in various parts of mainland Europe. As you’re now married to a Westerner, in your case an American, my reverse experience may be of interest - my marriage partner (my husband as it so happens) is Chinese, from the mainland though (from Henan in Central China), not Hong Kong, and he comes from a pretty privileged background in China too, as well as doing his first degrees in China (at a prestige university in Beijing) he did later and post-graduate degrees in the UK and it’s here that we met. Whilst we have visited China together (both Beijing and his home city and family in Henan) it is more convenient for us, as a married gay couple, to live in the UK. Various of his family members have also visited the UK, but of course the current COVID situation has unfortunately curtailed our travel plans in both directions, as it has with so many others, so we are certainly not unique. We both are fortunate to live here in separate quite spacious self-owned (mortgage-free) properties, partly because of his requirement to live in a specific city for work-related reasons, but apart from the periods of strict COVID-lockdown we move back and forth between our two properties pretty regularly, for the moment our arrangements suit us both pretty well, and whilst he misses some aspects of China (as do I) think he much prefers to be here for the present.

Ni hao. Thank you for your interesting video. I agree with you about Hong Kong being busy and stressful. I was living in a city in mainland China and had to visit Hong Kong. In the street I tried to ask for directions but people passed me by saying they were in a hurry or too busy. In mainland China where I was living, people would stop and try to help me even if they didn't speak English. Also, you mention the cinema in Hong Kong having the latest films, in mainland China there is a restriction on how many foreign films they are allowed to show, but there were pirate dvds which were sold very cheaply. There were two kinds, bad quality and good quality, the good quality dvds were very very good quality and from experience you knew which ones to buy. I saw films on dvd which later came out in the cinema two or more months later. There were many types of films and TV shows one could buy, not only those later shown in the cinema, there were so many that you were spoilt for choice. Of course, officially this was forbidden, but the shops sold them openly except only a few times a year when they were checked and then had to hide them. Needless to say most of the customers were foreign. The one thing I had a problem with in mainland China was the hospitals. They were so crowded, like a train station during the rush hour. You need to get a ticket to see the doctor and I was advised to get up early and queue up at 4am in order to get a ticket which didn't 't cost much. The scam was there were people who got there first who bought absolutely 'all' of the tickets and then sold them for a very high price to patients wanting to see a doctor in the hospital. Going to the hospital was the only thing I didn't like, however the doctors and nurses were very kind. I had to leave China, and I really didn't want to. I am now back in my own western country, but I miss living in China very much. It's a pity things are as they are, I wish I could return and live there again. I am pleased you found your peaceful pace of life back on the mainland. Take care. Zai jian.

You paid HK$2200 a month for a 430 sqft apartment in HK? Are you sure you don't mean USD? In your earlier video about living at Monster Building you mentioned the rent was USD1,000 (HKD 7,800) per month for a 140 sqft apartment! That can't be right ... I've never seen rentals in HK as cheap as HK$2200 a month for 430 sqft. And HK$15 for a half hour taxi ride? Flagfall in HK taxis is HK$24 before you've even gone anywhere! I don't think you were living in the same HK I live in ... this misinformation is not helpful for people thinking about moving to HK ...

wow very well detailed. You used words that people can relate bur aren't offensive. It's same dilemma for most people like an overseas worker. For example m a filipino living in dubai. I love dubai for its great services. Everything is convenient but because you need visa to stay here and properties are expensive to rent if you have a normal salary, then life isn't as laid-back. Unlike in my home country were we obviously have our own house and no need to have a visa. Hopefully all home countries would be as favorable as those international hotspots were people can both enjoy having a good home without compromising the diversified experiences and convenience of technology. Also, dubai is pretty clean and there is standard landscaping here despite being a desert country while my home country is always so messy with some trash you see almost everywhere.

I wanna enjoy Hong Kong for a while but the way it is heading I might move. I more look towards Taipeh. Such a nice city and also not as crazy busy as HK. Hi, nice video but I have to disagree with you on at least two points. Considering that you are living in Hangzhou (like me). Hangzhou is a huge hike trail where you can discover pearls around the surrounding mountains. Second point, Hanghzou is one of the cleanest city I lived in. For sure is the cleanest in China and for sure is a way cleaner than HK. Quality of construction I agreed with you but usually broken things get repaired in a very short time. Cultural event are without no doubt less thatn HK but in less than a hour of bullet train you are in SH...

I lived in China for 7 years, I really want to come back, there are many cities that already surpass Hong Kong in Mainland China, where you can get the same product or service, with the same quality or quantity, at a much lower price, the average quality of life that exists, exceeds those of western countries and India, I don't care about fake news, they have achieved a system that works for 1.4 billion people in a country that has more than 9 million km2, you have to think in perspective, in big Chinese cities, you can feel safe all the time and have access to good things without being rich, Hong Kong is very similar to big western cities, in terms of its laziness, it is not as clean, safe and modern as its counterparts in Mainland China, I think the latter had more humility to learn the good things from Hong Kong and apply them in other cities, instead Hong Kong has always looked down on Shenzhen, a city that by the way, has surpassed Hong Kong.

    Hi Dong Dong
I left HK when I was just 10 yrs old, that was 54 years ago. I really do miss HK, been back to visit just once in 2000. One thing I want to know is, what's the poor section of Kowloon like? Most people in the west don't know about the poor section of town . I mean the real poor section, has the HK government done anything to help the downtrodden? It's very sad, it's stayed with me all this time.

You like China more because you are from there, and your family is there, but if you want a vibrant lifestyle, then Hong Kong has more of that diversity. China is more "advanced" in many ways because it keeps its culture closed. If you want to see landscapes and nature, then China is where you would visit, if your focus is on making money, and more "openness" from people, then HK is where you want to be. This is all based on personal preference and experience.

HKG - one of the most btfl cities in the world, especially because of the surrounding, which you have mentioned. Hiking clubs, hiking trails! I did not like the domestic helpers camping everywhere on sidewalks and overpasses. I understand the flats are small but this completely spoils the public space for everybody else.
