7-year British resident of HK here. One thing is for sure, both HK and SG are ahead of the crumbling west. In HK, we pay some of the lowest income tax in the world, have access to good and affordable healthcare, benefit from world-class infrastructure, have easy access to the great outdoors (nice beaches, forests, mountains, hiking a few minutes from the city), it's international so you encounter people and foods from all corners of the world, and it's within easy reach of great cities like Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, etc. The western media and certain western governments have been conducting a brutal smear campaign against China (and by extent, Hong Kong) since 2018, but the reality is that it's a world-class city and a hugely important financial hub that will play a critical role in Asia and the GBA for decades to come.

The thing is, Hong Kong was a world class city before the Chinese took over and enacted the NSL. You can’t blame China for what is happening to Hong Kong yet at the same time you can’t give it credit either because it was built by the British and local Chinese population who turned it into a financial hub!
@@Blindswordsman1994 You are incorrect. Firstly, the GDP of the city tripled since the Brits left. It indeed became far wealthier, more cosmopolitan (contrary to what you may have been told), and freer (contrary to what you've definitely been told). Yes, freer. For example, media articles in the past had to be vetted by the British regime, there was no free press and no self-governance by the local majority. Today, you can find an array of anti-China media throughout the city (often with China-bashing headlines), from local ones like the SCMP to international ones like the NYT, WSJ, and CNN (again, contrary to what you likely thought). As for the NSL, I read it and, if anything, it's too soft - merely preventing secessionist activities and collaboration with foreign entities and powers to undermine the city (something that's highly illegal anyway in most nations). Any functioning sovereign nation on the planet has national security laws. But if you want to find truly scary ones, look mo further than the US and UK ones. But of course, like most keyboard warriors, you've never read any of them.
Most agree with that, even Singaporeans love vacationing in Hong Kong. Hong Kongers will never visit Singapore because they can get the same in their own city
There are tons of 1st world type of cities in Asia - KL, Bangkok, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Taipei, Seoul, Busan, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, Yokohama, Beijing etc. Asia is developed and rich asf.
Hong Kong is still an exciting place to live as an expat or high earning individual, plus theres ample nature (clear beaches and mountains) just 1-2 hours public transport from city centre without having to cross borders is nowhere to be found in the world. Politics aside obviously
FYI Singapore has the highest avg salary in asia, HK avg salary is far lesser than Singapore now. Just accept ur fate that u been declining & can’t be progessive as Singapore anymore ever since u been under the control of communist china. That’s why Singapore passport is rated no.1 in the world & not china(VY low world ranking).🥰🤭
How is HK culturally better than Singapore?? Fact shows that Singapore is one of world top 5 MOST diverse countries, many races & hundreds of nationalities live here, half populations living in Singapore are foreigners. Do u have that many foreigners love to make HK permanent home??😂
Why is everyone comparing Hong Kong and Singapore in a toxic way? Both are global financial centres and one of the most prosporous cities in Asia, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Ity just depends on your style. There is no "better" city it just depends on your preferences. In fact, even though Hong Kong and Singapore are both competitors, they are in some ways interdependent of each other in for example trade.
China situation ? NSL law only benefits foreign companies who wants to invest into HK and mainland China. It gives business stability, same as it had before all the 2014 and 2019 protests. Look how much money Christie's, Sotheby's and Phillips are investing into HK after 2019 protests, especially after NSL. For those comapnies its totally opposite, they want to have a bigger impact on HK luxury auction house market. I live here for 13 years, and nothing has changed. Great place to be.
I've lived in Dubai and spent a lot of time in HK. Also have worked in banking. If you have simple banking needs, UAE is fine. Beyond that HK is preferable. Better commercial banking and wealth management. Moreover, people are worrying about reductions in freedoms but in practical terms you still have many freedoms in HK that you don't in UAE, but people ignore this. Both are great though
You can't compare SG to HK , the biggest reason that you can't set up a company solely yourself in SG, you neee a local director. While in HK you can be the 100% owner of the company and you dont need t hire any locals for that, unless you want to make yourself a working visa.
I can assure you that Hong Kong is more exciting than Singapore ! You can do hiking at mountains in the morning , swim in the sea in the afternoon, and then have parties in the evening at 5 stars hotels, or fine dining in a 3 stars Michelin restaurants and then popping into different bars for drinks in the late night. You can do all these activities in one day as the transportation is very efficient. Moreover, very safe in the late night !
In S'pore u can do all the things you mentioned except for the walking in the mountains. S'pore has lots of cycling tracks for cyclists to ride from places to places, there are many parks for residents to do jogging and other exercises, there are many community clubs for indoor sports and there are also other islands with nice beaches, lastly, the variety of food is amazing!
Except that Singapore alcohol is much more expensive and you can't buy it from retails outlets after 10 pm, unlike in Hong Kong where you can get the same at 3 am in the morning.
Hong Kong is an exciting city. Easy to make business, low tax, excellent transportation, efficient working people, plenty of opportunities. I can put up with the heat and the humidity in the summer period but for me the major draw back is the air pollution that can be terrible certain days. Another thing to consider is that accommodation is expensive.
It's amazing to see different views from around the globe. Certainly, most of us speak either because we have heard from somewhere or we actually experienced it. In my opinion, no country is perfect every country has some or the other flaws, it's because of an individual's preferences. It's true that a country may have more benefits than the other. However, it is our choice what fits best for us. We cannot deny the fact that others experience helps us alot in taking the decision. In hkg, despite of having higher accommodation, people still wants to live because they are earning that much. That means there are opportunities, maybe it's a bit less but it hasn't ended unlike other countries with recession. The weather, transport, beautiful nightlife, safety. And so on. I am not aware much of Singapore , but what I read is there are restrictions and same weather throughout, less lively than hkg. That does not mean sgp doesn't have any good points to look for. The low rate rents, great opportunities, less crime rate . It's just our own perception and preferences at the end, otherwise don't forget in every country there are ups and downs. We just have to figure it out which one suits us the best. 😊
I have been looking for jobs in both cities and recruiters don't recommend SGP because they reject most of the working visas, companies need to have a local to foreigner ratio above 1:10 to have a chance of getting a visa approved for a new foreigner. Concerning salary/costs the situation in SGP is getting worse, especially for architects it is more profitable to go to HK. Still Dubai is way better in that aspect, but life in Dubai is hell and male to female ratio is 4 to 1, not a place for straight men.
@@extsaojoseim a South African… its unfortunately not so safe in certain parts but if you visit the Western Cape…it wont disappoint. Its the best part of South Africa
HK is the south finanical centre of China and Shanghai is north finanical centre of China. If you believe China will become 1st nominal gdp the world at the next 20 years, choose HK.
After 2014 & 2019 riot, the national security law was enacted to make Hong Kong much safer. Since 2019, some anti-government rioters/protesters left Hong Kong to Taiwan or western countries. And now, Hong Kong is more stable & prosperous, and enjoys low taxes, low crime rates.
what's funny is that even before 2014, 2019, National Security Laws etc. etc. Hong Kong was always stable and prosperous, and has always enjoyed low crime rates taxes. So what are you on about?
only one season in one life. and either place has not much democracy now, so I would choose to live in Hong Kong. There's much much more job or business opportunities alongside China than with Malaysia.
HK is a nice city. Of course if you know locals in a place you'll see a different side. Take a trip to Lantau island on the ferry and eat in the fish restaurants...it's very green too. HK was always a super creative city. You see a cake shop in London, it's just a cake shop. The same shop in HK will be next level. KL is also very green. I'm not sure what impression you get after 3 or 4 days, saying that though (I spent 5+ weeks in HK and 5 weeks in Malaysia). Malaysia is the only place that felt like home the moment I stepped off the plane the first time I visited. Perhaps HK will change over time 😐 and I haven't been back to KL for a while. The Malaysia as a second home program was too expensive when I checked it out years ago. HK property is too small and too expensive. So, Dubai is great (but less green) however, it's in a good location, so you can visit HK or KL with a 7 hour trip 😄 if you can configure all the variables.
"traditionally a popular place for expats" Err, Hong Kong was founded by the British and was ruled by Britain for over 100 years, as recently as up until 1997. Same with Singapore, it was also founded by the British and was ruled by Britain for over a century.
After living a totalled 2 years in Hong Kong. Is not for a digital nomad. 5x prices on food and rent. Absolutely horrible service at most venues. Some people can be kind in hong kong. Few days is not enough to see if the place is or not for you. Goodluck
Exactly. For all the digital nomad out there that don't earn enough there is Bali o Vietnam for them. Hong Kong is for high salary ppl. I live in Hk since 2004. i love here and i feel blessed
Huh...really...but then, look at the Tube compared to HK's MTR. You just want to be in Mong Gok around 5pm and see the waves of people on the streets in HK. I never experienced anything like that in London.
@@SA-cloud There's no comparison between the tube and the MTR. One is more spacious and has ample airconditioning. The other is sticky and grubby and small. It was built in the last century and it shows
Go for hiking and exploring outlying islands of Hong Kong, go to places like Stanley,Discovery bay, walking trails around the peak and the rural areas,it will be surely a total relaxing and different experience
Of course Singapore is the winner. HK's housing is a no-no. I dont mind visting HK but not staying there. Too congested and dirty. Singapore is clean and safe for families with young children. For holidays, Singaporeans can certainly getaway to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc. Even day trips to Malaysia and Indonesia (Batam/Bintang) is possible.
Except Singapore only has two congested land border crossings into Malaysia which are served mostly by buses, while Hong Kong has more than 8 into China which are served by rail, roads and long bridges, with some with co located customs making crossings a breeze. Singaporeans can only travel easily to Southeast Asian countries while Hong Kongers can get to those countries in about the same time plus easily access China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. How long does it take to fly to Sapparo from Singapore for a ski trip compared to Hong Kong?
I would still like to know, what's the current working situation in hkg. Is the working environment still amazing in corporate offices? Are the living conditions worse, neutral or better as compared to 3 years back ? How much would you rate.
Singapore doesn't have much interesting history. The only popular site is the floating swimming pool and the lighted up tree, full stop. I would prefer HK much much more
As a Hongkonger, Singapore is boring for me. Most things here are not expensive except for rental costs. You can also find a wide range of cheap things from China. Also, there are many options to rent if you don't have to worry about taking care of children or commuting to work every day. But, Singapore has the advantage of widespread English fluency, while English proficiency among Hong Kong residents may be lower.
Technically singapore is in the centre of popular tourist places like Bangkok and Bali. With a Singaporean passport, we have access to best of Southeast Asia.
Singapore is definitely boring - no doubt. All the mall structures are pretty much same. You feel like you are in a robot city. If you go there for a few days, it's great. If you stay there for more than a month, you will be bored to tears. If you don't believe, you try it yourself.
More than 80 percent of Singapore citizens own a government built housings. Besides properties and financial industries, Singapore has manufacturing, semiconductor, for example. Singapore also has tourism, Taylor swift concert, and Singapore air show, F1 nights race for example. Singapore is also logistics hubs, both sea and air. Singapore has the busiest sea port. Fintech, AI are area of investment. Singapore also has petrochemical industries in our jurong island. Singapore also has shipbuilding industries. Singapore also has biomedical industries. Singapore are family friendly, we build a lot of play ground for children. NUS and NTU are rank amount the top 50 universities.
Depend on who you ask. For one Singapore do NOT have death penalty for Taiwanese base on their political incline. Taiwanese can visit Singapore safely for leasure, business, study or work.
@@ericphua2359 although the maximum penalty for treason in SG is life imprisonment you can get hanged for drug trafficking. Different countries, different rules
@@calvinl2199, Yes, if you are looking for drugs in Singapore, you will be disappointed. Because all durg trafficer were hung. Singapore want to keep this, to keep Singapore drugs free and safe for our children. We don't tourists who visit Singapore for drugs. Maybe HK is safer than Singapore in term of doings durg.
talk practical and not politics. in singapore you put up with hot weather. in hong kong you put up with constant noise, crowding, dirtiness/rotting environment&buildings, street level pollution/hazards, rudeness, more crimes, and horrible housing
Dubai and Singapore are NOT world cities like Hong Kong. HK is the cultural, financial, and media capital of Asia; it has historical value, and one of the few territories that provide USA-type opportunities outside of North America. Dubai is a pathetic tourist town and nothing more. Singapore is basically a port city; its feeble economy is tied to how well the port does. Hong Kong is a much bigger city than both, and has more to do and see, more events, more diverse job opportunities, and more freedom; it's simply superior across the board compared to the other inadequate cities you've mentioned.

"Cultural capital" of Asia?! o.O What blinded bulls**t is that with a Chinese-majority society 🤌 And SG is currently the financial capital of Asia where GFCI is concerned #HatersGonHate #MajulahSingapura 🤷♂
Your understanding to HK is all wrong. Your view is just too superficial. Most of us (the real HK local) are moving out due to the disgusting political atmosphere. Everyday, everything you seen, you heard feel like thru the haze and could make you feel uncomfortable of your routine. Sometimes the news from the official could be extremely twisted too. Singapore and Taiwan are also disgusting countries and their culture is also terrible. If you really like to enjoy your life. I prefer you to go to the south america countries or just go get an island in the indian ocean to pass the rest of your life would be a better option than in HK.
Hi I'm a Hongkonger who watched all your videos cuz I'm planning to relocate to Dubai. Thanks for visiting Hong Kong! ❤ Honestly, it's a bad idea to move to HK now, almost everyone here is urging to escape/already moved to countries like UK, Canada, and Australia. Even though we have to pay a higher tax rate, we still hurry to go there because Hong Kong is a dangerous place now. The good old days are gone. So I wouldn't recommend anyone to live here.
@@tuomaskiv For local HKers, the "dangerous" from their perspective is because they are becoming more and more scared of CCP from mainland China, cause they felt their democracy and freedom has been ruined by the party in recent years. However, for foreigners, practically nothing should be considered dangerous as of now, HK is still a city full of business opportunities.
@@ralph3652003 If you come as a tourist and only travel for a few weeks. Yes, you'll be fine. But if you want to stay for months or a year, you'll be affected by the current situation. Because what China has done to us is that not only has democracy been affected in Hong Kong, but everything has started to fall apart. Even the crime rate is rising rapidly. Corruption in the police force has become widespread. Inadequate medical services because most of the doctors and nurses have left and moved to other countries. It's no longer a safe city and definitely not an ideal place to live for foreigners or locals.
Fyi many Hong Kongers have migrated to Singapore which u didn’t know, they have started as early as 1980s & 1990s. Many have felt that was the BEST move ever rather than moving to N. America,Australia or any European countries cos those countries aren’t asia countries afterall, u will always be treated as 2nd class citizen in white country.🥰🤭
HK is dead now, the only skills the country has is stock and real estate broking and both sectors will never recover. Tech skills are third world, economic knowledge is fourth world, engineers specialize in fixing toilets for ultra rich, LKF is dead, SW is dead, taxis are 50 years old and always trying to crash into each other, shops are all closed and the ones alive are said to be money washing, restaurants are closing one after another, you get 5 circle ks or 7-11s in two blocks, and 3 watsons and mannings. Full of life? I dont know what you guys are smoking here.
Hong Kong = CCP cop can anytime knock on your hotel room door and take you away for being SPY . Singapore = Pure of Freedom and relaxation Now you take a pick ?
Singapore for me, according to the democracy index, it is categorised as a flawed democracy. Hong Kong has fallen to Hydrid Regime status and is heading to Authoritarian.
But please be reminded that Hongkong is not a normal city now. There are at least 48 persons, including University Professors, Lawyers, Teachers, Reporters spending their 5th year in prison and without trial. China govt is going to keep them in life imprisonment. Even in Africa, country like Senegal, the old president would only keep his rivalry leader Bassirou Diomaye Faye in prison for just 1 year and then allow him to join the president election and let him be the next president after fair election. How can you pretend to know nothing about them and continue to play happily in Hongkong? That's what the China govt want you to do. It's just because their thoughts are against China. And there are hundreds of Hongkong ordinary people are put in jail for over 5 years. At least 2 persons in prison were forced to do TV show to say China govt is absolutely right. Please read "European Union message to China on human rights day" before going to China.
Personally I would not be comfortable living under Authoritarian rule. All your "Rights" are what they tell you they are. Living in a Democracy all my life I cherish my Rights under The Law where no one is above them.
Hong kong, singapore, and dubai/uae are soft authoritarians UAE is a kindom Singapore is a one party state that acts like a company and hong kong is a corporation Big companies vote based on how much they make in Hong Kong And make the laws in their favor which is why all most of the grocery store brands are actually owned by one company and real estate is expensive when 80 percent of the land is not used @ruslankolotogin
this is typical ignorant hk thinking. singapore citizens has more rights and freedom (those that matters) than a hk citizen ever has. (Eg. right to vote for govt of your choice, right to affordable housing/education/healthcare, right to safe/clean environment, and most important the right knowing what is the planned future you and your children can have.
@@tenwhite769 Right to vote for the government of your choice? SG has been ruled by the same party for 65 years since it separated from Malaysia! Education/housing/healthcare are paid for by taxes. HK has lower taxes but still has free education and good healthcare, with the highest life expectancy in the world. Right to know your planned future? Not sure what you mean, you mean the SG government can predict your future?
I'm a Hongkonger. Hong Kong used to be a great place, but it's like a sinking ship right now because of the political situation. Not going to talk about the politics, but as a matter of fact, leaderships just suck and with aging issues, youngsters are leaving Hong Kong since 2019, I can foresee that Hong Kong will become less and less prosperous in the next 10 or 20 years.
probably one of the worst places to be in if you value free speech and individual freedoms such a shame such an awesome city has fallen so much. my prayers go out to all hong kongers
You are wrong. We enjoy lots of freedom of speech and individual freedom. We can openly talk about what is a woman unlike the West. We can openly oppose anyone who try to groom our kid to change sex without being sued by the government. We can reject any men to enter female toilets or changing room even he claims he is a woman. Of course, we can use whatever pronouns we want to address anybody. We are free from mass gun shooting in pulic area by crazy people. Our streets are free from homeless people or drug addicts in most part of our city. We are safe to go out on the street late at night. We enjoy cheap and clean public transport like MTR. We have cheap public health care. I simply enjoy every day of my time in Hong Kong.

I think I agree because there is a lot of protests on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon
Why is everyone comparing Hong Kong and Singapore in a toxic way? Both are global financial centres and one of the most prosporous cities in Asia, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Ity just depends on your style. There is no "better" city it just depends on your preferences. In fact, even though Hong Kong and Singapore are both competitors, they are in some ways interdependent of each other in for example trade.
yes agre, people tend to get quite tribal about these things
To get people like us to leave a comment and the content maker can get more views and money 😂
Congratulations on your wumao compensation for making this post. You BS isn't fooling anyone
Definitely Agree 👍🏻
I've lived in Dubai and spent a lot of time in HK. Also have worked in banking. If you have simple banking needs, UAE is fine. Beyond that HK is preferable. Better commercial banking and wealth management. Moreover, people are worrying about reductions in freedoms but in practical terms you still have many freedoms in HK that you don't in UAE, but people ignore this. Both are great though
As a Hong Kongers I am so proud of it.
You can't compare SG to HK , the biggest reason that you can't set up a company solely yourself in SG, you neee a local director. While in HK you can be the 100% owner of the company and you dont need t hire any locals for that, unless you want to make yourself a working visa.
That’s going to change in due course
what do you mean by that ?@@user-iz2hz2sh6g
Agreed 💯
Agree with your view on favoring places that are on the right trajectory.
Great impression and fair. Anyone in a city probably only see one side of a place but you can see HK from many things.
Definitely the hiking trails and outlying islands make Hong Kong a more attractive city to visit
Except that Singapore alcohol is much more expensive and you can't buy it from retails outlets after 10 pm, unlike in Hong Kong where you can get the same at 3 am in the morning.
Hong Kong looks awesome
It's an amazing city. Tons of European expats too.
Recently visited Cape Town, South Africa.
Really really cool place!!!
what about safety?
@@extsaojoseim a South African… its unfortunately not so safe in certain parts but if you visit the Western Cape…it wont disappoint. Its the best part of South Africa

You need to visit the New Territories as well.
"traditionally a popular place for expats" Err, Hong Kong was founded by the British and was ruled by Britain for over 100 years, as recently as up until 1997. Same with Singapore, it was also founded by the British and was ruled by Britain for over a century.

Yeah but then in Hong Kong, you can also visit Southeast Asia as well as other parts of Mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan a lot easier
You must love summer and 30+ celsius days year round. Most people prefer having seasons.

Honestly, it's a bad idea to move to HK now, almost everyone here is urging to escape/already moved to countries like UK, Canada, and Australia. Even though we have to pay a higher tax rate, we still hurry to go there because Hong Kong is a dangerous place now. The good old days are gone. So I wouldn't recommend anyone to live here.
Interesting. In what way do you mean it is "dangerous"
Well the dangerous is the government (I mean CCP)
@@tuomaskiv For local HKers, the "dangerous" from their perspective is because they are becoming more and more scared of CCP from mainland China, cause they felt their democracy and freedom has been ruined by the party in recent years. Singapore for me, according to the democracy index, it is categorised as a flawed democracy. Hong Kong has fallen to Hydrid Regime status and is heading to Authoritarian.
60+ of Singapore choose the current political party to be the government of the day. It Singaporean choices.
