June 25 lo-fi glitch (beats sequenced by Particles)

  • I hadn't used Patching Panda's Particles for a while (too long!) - I'd forgot how fun it is to make glitchy and unusual beats with it. With this jam, I was hoping to push the compression and eq to get a sort of lo-fi/glitch feel that I hoped might work with the beats.
    To make these beats, I sent a Euclidean rhythm from Pam's to Particle's clock in. I then sent four more looping trigger sequences from Pam's to Particle's 4 inputs - playing around with the "phase" setting on some of them to create more interesting (to me, at least) beats. I then sent the four outputs to BIA, Taiko and Squid Salmple. I also sent a more regular trigger from Pam's to trigger the clap - hopefully this ties everything together and keeps a sort of groove going.
    I also used the gate function on Particles to remove some of the triggers (it was getting a little messy) and played with the sliders to get those ratchets you sometimes hear.
    The melody is two very simple loops from Castle playing at almost the same time, and then going through Mimeophon for reverb/delay.

      Thanks so much, Gavin! Glad you like it.
      I thought about recording the process of making the beat as well as describing it, but I got distracted - then tired!!! Will try one day :)

    "Patching Panda's Particles" sounds like some obscure, short-lived 80's British indie punk-glam-rock band from Birmingham.. All levity aside, I absolutely love how unique your sound is, both on experimental pieces and slightly more conventional dubby jams!

      Haha yeah! I don't know if you know John Peel, but I love saying random phrases in his voice and imagining they are some obscure 80s band.
      Thanks so much for the kind words, too :)

    Now THIS is the kinda shtuff I'm trying to get out of my modular. Those drums are mixed super well (love that little casio snare). Is all this coming from that smaller rack, and got a modulargrid for it?

      @yassokiiba  11 дней назад +1

      Thanks so much, man! So glad you like it :)
      Not sure if I'll be able to remember perfectly, but this one is coming from all over the racks. As I explained in the description, Pam's and Particle's are doing the sequencing on the beats. The beat sounds themselves are:
      - Basilimus Iteritas Alter (the kick)
      - the stock USB stick that comes with Squid Salmple (which does the clap and a couple of hat sounds). I'm playing a bit with downsampling, sample speed, filters, and resonance on the Squid, too. Squid's great for a sort of 90s lo-fi sound.
      - Akemie's Taiko (I've got that under CV control so it makes a few sounds, but mostly hats and the ocassional sort of snare)
      But I think what was most important this time was I'm using my new Dannysound Dynamics, which is really compressing and EQing the beats. I only got it last week, but I've been so impressed with how it sounds - the soft clipping is great. I think it's all analogue.
      I need to reshuffle my modules a bit.... it all got a bit out of hand and it's much bigger than I planned. But here are the Modulargrid pages for the 3 cases (some of the modules are in the wrong place as I've been planning the reshuffle - and I don't have a Vactrol Mix, that should actually be the RVS module by P4L, but I can't find that module on the site):

      @@yassokiiba oh man you are the best! I actually just set my sights on that Dannysound comp/drive unit too, just held off as I've been trying to find something with a similar sound but with stereo I/O. 🤔
      Is there any 4ms Shuffling Multiplier clocking, or is the Particles handling most of the groove/humanization in here? I don't currently have any drum stuff in my rack as I usually keep that in my Digitakt (+Squarp Hermod for MIDI→CV) or Ableton, but I've been itching to get some sort of standalone sampling in the rack myself. Gotta have a recording input, and Squid has always interested me - especially paired with their ASQ-1 sequencer, but $$$...

    • @yassokiiba
      @yassokiiba  11 дней назад +1

      @@goonfish The Dannysound is amazing. I've also got a Messor from Cosmotronic, which is stereo and very good, but lacks the EQ. If you've got EQ somewhere else in your system then you might not miss that though?
      No 4MS in my case. Particles can shuffle the outputs in a similar way, though. I often use Compare 2 for generating shuffling complex beats too.
      I think the Squid is such a useful module. If you can afford one, it's definitely worth it. It's much more than just a sample player (check the four "deep dives" ALM put on RUclips if you have free time.... there's so much you can do).
      Love your stuff btw!!!
