I moved from Cape Town to London in 1998. While living in Cspe Town I had bought a Roland Jupiter 4, a Roland CR8000 and a 505. Running this stuff through guitar fx pedals into a Fostex XR-7, which had sweepable mids on the master section. This combination led to me spending most of my time locked away (prior to this I just had a guitar!🙂), I pondered the marvellous mysteries that poured out of the Jupiter with every twitch of a knob, or fader. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was happy to do it all the time I wasn’t working. So, I sold the Jupiter in part to fund my trip to musical Mecca (London for a South African in 1998), and upon my arrival moved in with a group of like minded musicians to embark on a two-year journey into the heart of darkness. Anyhow, one of these dipsticks I lived with had a Quasimidi “Raveolution”, and I must admit, even then, after my time with the Jupiter and its little friends, it sounded like a little Casiotone “one man band” thing with a really cheesy filter. 🙂 That’s my two cents worth..
The Technox!!! ...that was my first ever synthesizer. Cubase on an secondhand Atari Mega ST, a 303 rack clone that didn't sound like a 303 at all, and no way to record anything because I couldn't afford a Tascam. Good old times 😀
Add a simple mixer, a basic fx box and a tape deck, and you got the average 90s Techno homestudio! Thousands of great records were made using exactly this kind of simple setup.
@@ropeburn6684 My simple mixer was a Y-cable that I soldered (and it would have given goosebumps to people who actually can solder). I added a Boss drum computer that didn't have any 808/909 like sounds. Basically, I was absolutely clueless, I was too late to the party and couldn't get any of the analog classics dirt cheap, and of course I lacked any real talent. But I had a boatload of fun doing nothing substantial 😀
I met the two German guys who ran Quasimidi the same day I met Doctor Bob. They were also enjoying a synth-free vino-lubricated conversation at the opening of a synth museum in London. They were nice enough guys, and they didn't mind admitting that they preferred the Rave-o-lution, musically and fiscally, because of the user interface, and the expansion options, which placed the unexpanded basic model in the right price bracket to make a small profit in a crowded groovebox market, then add fat margins on the expansions. Yay for pragmatism.
The sound takes me back to 90s Scooter like "Rhapsody In E", which I honestly love to this day ❤ Thank you for this series! Found it a couple of days ago, instantly hooked.
Nice one. I actually own a Technox. Got it as a gift many years ago. Finally brought it with me to London from Austria last year. Had a great afternoon playing around with it, having fun with how good it does THOSE sounds, just as you demonstrated. And ever since, whenever I work on tracks I'm too lazy to bother with all the effort that goes into using this thing. :D When there's plenty other machines or vstis around that are so much simpler to use. But one day it'll find a way into a track... maybe now that it's got the Bad Gear Seal of Approval!
All right, time for a more serious comment. With this one, honestly, I feel like - and especially back in the day - it's a great tool for getting a job done. You literally could do the entire soundtrack for a PS1 game, particularly a PS1 racing game, on this thing, and you could honestly get away with this and nothing else quite far into the PS2 era... and perhaps a bit beyond. Listen to some of Namco's early Wangan Midnight soundtracks to see what I mean. Same with Unreal Tournament 99: a bunch of that stuff could have been done quite credibly on this. I really like it, and I really like what you did with it. Definitely hits a certain nostalgia spot for me, and hard. Realistically, I heard a lot more of this kind of music on video games, CD, and certain TV shows and films, than I ever did in clubs, because I just couldn't afford to go to clubs for the most part, but this is still very much of its era, and sounds great.
You are fun to watch and listen to. I have to freeze the screen to read the memes. Most are worth it. You make these ditties look easy. I'll bet they take even you an hour or two. Vielen Dank!
I like the dusty Quasimidi stuff but for years its been ridiculously priced on used market, not too many of them in existence. Takes a lot of discipline to release 1-2 of these a week, I salute you.
The Brits love them... I don't know exactly why, but whenever I mentioned I came from Germany, they often replied with Buzzwords like Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Bosch, Miele ...... and Quasimidi 😄

What a fun little box. Enjoyed this one :) Along similar lines and you'd probably enjoy it for the channel is Akai's SG01v - They had three little half rack units with LED display, three parameters per sound, little romplers. There was the SG01p piano, SG01k (k means GM, dunno why they didn't call is G) and the ultimate - the SG01v, V is for vintage. It's full of vintage synth sounds. Fun little box released at a time not far from when Jupiters were cheap and unwanted, and people didn't want vintage synth sounds. :)

That hi-hat sounds great! Found them for over $600 delivered in the US. Frankly, I'm waiting for some new Behringer clones for my rack space for about half the price. Sure they require 2 rack spaces, but the rack can be just 1/4 as deep.
I think the beauty of these romplers are the multitimbrality, layering sounds has always been my thing. It has some nice patches on the technox you did it proud yet again 😎👌

I had one too. Used it in a wider set up which included an Akai S3000, Juno 106, Korg M1 and an Alesis SR16 drum machine. All run via an Atari 1040. The Quasimidi provided the edgy / cheesy element. Still got the S3000, but everything else is long gone. My favourite part of the Technox user manual was the incredibly poor translation to English. It also said something like '...so you can sound like all the other guys, with their baseball caps.' Or words to that effect. Happy times :-)
Hey! This was my first multi-timbral sound generator, back in the late 90s. Quite a lot cheesy sounds inside, but with a little tweaking usable, at least for making a quick sketch of a track.

Used to sing that at karaoke all the time, and the key change after the instrumental/Michael MacDonald break ALWAYS catches me across the knees. I can NEVER hone in on it, and I don't know why.
I sold mine recently and it went for 275. Went to Croydon so maybe the grime guys like them. The samples always sounded rough, part of its charm. Years ago I sold it and thisnguy accused me of trying to kill him cos it made a mild pop when it turned on. He was obsessed that I'd put a non standard screw in it which wasn't true. He also kept refusing to take it apart even though I never asked him. He ended up having to pay to send it back after 2 weeks of emailing me daily. Memories
So happy Quasimidi existed i have no idea if they went bankrupt i remember on the raveolution expansion board i had there was kraftwerk samples and kraftwerk used them live for a while
Great video that catapulted me straight back to the beginnings of my sound design! Thanks for this feeling :-) Quasimidi was an interesting company back then. As well as the Technox, I also had the Quasar (including the T. R. E. module) and the Cyber 6. There are also pictures of them on my website. I also programmed sound sets for the Technox and Quasar. You could get a lot of useful patches out of both boxes. Just listen to the demos on my site. The good old days :-) Cheers, Oli / Sounds of Revolution
Cool, my second Rack Synth back in the 90ies after the MKS-50. I actually produced some nice Trance tunes with the Technox. Very underrated Rompler ;-)
In retrospect, I'd have loved to have had this 30 years ago but the object of my affections was the U-220 and I had blown my cash on a useless (to me) Proteus/1 😭😭😭 Anyway, a great video as usual ❤
it has the llok and sound of a 1990s era device. That's not bad, but it needs doctoring up as you did to set it apart of that. Thanks for showing it has use today.
That beauty! I was drooling when I saw the reviews in Future Music Magazine along with the Orbit and the one that was for Latin music... Conga! or something like that :)
It's techno polka time. I bought a flight case rack that had three of these and a Polymorph. I think if this had multiple outs, especially the drums, the usefulness of this currently would increase enormously. I should obviously sell them now though (since apparently Americans are buying them for 750 universal space bucks.) Would be interesting for a Bad Gear Polymorph or Raveomatic episode.
I have an E-Mu Vintage Keys "rompler" that has a similar looking workflow. These sorts of things are good collections of the eras, but are really just good sound banks with some synthy features baked in and a bit thin on sound despite style. You made it sound great though, of course!
Never heard of this thing. I hate techno/rave etc music but it sounds like there's some awesome 80s style digital patches in there! Cheaper ways to get those though lol! Fun episode as always!
I don't have any racked gear, well kind of I do, three Behringer synths, but they aren't racked. This thing for whatever reason gives me DX7 vibes. Great vis as always. Fabrik im Deutschland, always gut..good. Oh, I got a Pro 3 this week. It's awesome.
One of these days you gotta do a video on the Polymorph. It really was the peak for Quasimidi, the sequencer really brings the Quasimidi sound engine to life. I'd lend you mine but I'm in the US

I like mine. I don't use it much, but when I do, I always think I need to use it more.
The drum samples are more than decent
Agreed, proper drums
So happy Quasimidi existed i have no idea if they went bankrupt i remember on the raveolution expansion board i had there was kraftwerk samples and kraftwerk used them live for a while
4:50 The rusty cruddy screws is awesome! Like skeleton parts from the 1990ies dinosaur era!
😀😀😀
Nice job as per usual! Yeah, some of the sounds you got out of it really weren't too bad at all
Thank you!!!
The high-pitched "skwee" was wonderful.
😀😀😀
Masochism in 2160p
idd!
Great video that catapulted me straight back to the beginnings of my sound design! Thanks for this feeling :-)
Quasimidi was an interesting company back then. As well as the Technox, I also had the Quasar (including the T. R. E. module) and the Cyber 6. There are also pictures of them on my website. I also programmed sound sets for the Technox and Quasar. You could get a lot of useful patches out of both boxes. Just listen to the demos on my site. The good old days :-)
Cheers,
Oli / Sounds of Revolution
Nice!!!
1:52 LMAAAOO "GRAND DAUGHTER" 😂😂😂
LOL
I know nothing about 90s romplers but I, too, have to admire the burgeoise hi-fi style surface of rusty screws.
Best!!!
Probably crusted E! , scratch it and swallow
I feel it was a missed opportunity to put Nick Batt's face on P.W.M. Bach's face. LOL!
So true!!!
I've been waiting for this one! 😄
Cool, my second Rack Synth back in the 90ies after the MKS-50. I actually produced some nice Trance tunes with the Technox. Very underrated Rompler ;-)
Nice classic setup!
This is what i call interactive media, finger on the space bar, ready to go!
It's not a linear medium;)
In hindsight the guy's at Quasimidi had a lot of foresight, their complete product line up was especially made for this show.
Agreed!!!
In retrospect, I'd have loved to have had this 30 years ago but the object of my affections was the U-220 and I had blown my cash on a useless (to me) Proteus/1 😭😭😭
Anyway, a great video as usual ❤
U220 is actually pretty awesome. Thanks!!!
The rage in my heart that I can't just go buy a beat up one of these at guitar center
I feel you!
With the huge revival of 90's progressive and psychedelic sounds happening right now, I could honestly hear tracks being made with one of these.
Agreed!!!
I Like to enjoy your videos! Lots of synths I have never seen and others that I have not touched since I was a kid! Keep it up dude you great!
Thank you!!!
it has the llok and sound of a 1990s era device. That's not bad, but it needs doctoring up as you did to set it apart of that. Thanks for showing it has use today.
Agreed!!!
Get your hands on a MC 909. I love mine. The time stretch and vinyl simulation are amazing.
Great idea, thanks!!!
That beauty! I was drooling when I saw the reviews in Future Music Magazine along with the Orbit and the one that was for Latin music... Conga! or something like that :)
Wasn't that the Carnival?
I actually think this was the best sounding era of synths. ever
90s❤️❤️❤️
It's techno polka time.
I bought a flight case rack that had three of these and a Polymorph. I think if this had multiple outs, especially the drums, the usefulness of this currently would increase enormously.
I should obviously sell them now though (since apparently Americans are buying them for 750 universal space bucks.)
Would be interesting for a Bad Gear Polymorph or Raveomatic episode.
Great suggestions, thank you!!!
Now that is some truly bad gear :D The two encoders...LOL. Can't imagine working with that
It's an acquired taste;)
I have an E-Mu Vintage Keys "rompler" that has a similar looking workflow. These sorts of things are good collections of the eras, but are really just good sound banks with some synthy features baked in and a bit thin on sound despite style. You made it sound great though, of course!
Thank you so much!!!
I remember when I discovered Quasimidi was a thing. Every product I found out about had me thinking “Why?”
Because techno...
@@AudioPilzI also discovered that soon after
Skwee ... petition for naming a genre like this
This IS an actual genre
@@AudioPilz And so be it henceforth !

Never heard of this thing. I hate techno/rave etc music but it sounds like there's some awesome 80s style digital patches in there! Cheaper ways to get those though lol! Fun episode as always!
Thank you!!!
Nice, thanks!!!
This man, this man here, can draw water from a stone. I salute him ! *chugs beer*
Thank you so much!!!
it sounds cool
Agreed!!!
One of these days you gotta do a video on the Polymorph. It really was the peak for Quasimidi, the sequencer really brings the Quasimidi sound engine to life. I'd lend you mine but I'm in the US
I really want one of these!!! Thanks!!!
That second track came alive in comparison to the first! Like night and day!
Agreed!!!
