  • When you fish from the bank as much as I do, you're bound to run into a few problems with boaters. But, this example is so ridiculous if I didn't have it on video you probably wouldn't believe it. Not the way I wanted to start the 2024 fishing season. More fishing videos, carp bait recipes, fishing gear list, and other good stuff linked below. Thanks for watching.

I just had a bunch of these idiots do the exact same thing to me on the Detroit River while I was walleye jigging from shore. These boats have the entire river but want to drift 20 feet from shore where all of us guys who are fishing from shore have lines in the water so ive started to make a habit of keeping about 2 dozen 2 ounce egg sinkers in my tackle box and if they don't take heed to the "warning" shot of me casting my 1 ounce walleye jig 3 feet from there boat I start throwing the 2 ounce sinkers onto their boats. Broke a guys windshield last week and he pulled into shore to "fight" me until he realized I'm a life long Detroiter who doesn't play games and will kick 3 of their asses at once on my own. They tucked tail and got back on their boat after they realized what kind of "individual" I am. Unfortunately there's 300 boats on the river this time of year and half of em don't have respect for the guys who fish from shore so I'll just keep throwing sinkers at em. 😡 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

That's just arrogance is what that is. Boat or no boat, if you were there first, you have every right to fish that area. Respectfully, they should have went around your lines. I have a boat. I don't like doing that to others trying to enjoy their day from the shoreline. Not sure what their purpose was having to be in that exact spot and ignoring your lines....again.

This happened to us but the role is switched. We were fishing a spot in Lake Sonoma and we were on a boat. We were catching fish left and right at this one spot. We were pretty close to the bank. Then these bank anglers walked up and started casting where our lines were. One of them tangled out line. We confronted them and they didn't say a thing. We ended up leaving the spot and as we were leaving, they caught a 5lber. Could've been our fish.
Point is, there's an unwritten rule that if someone is already fishing a spot, you give them space and move along. Don't be that guy and step on people's toes just because the spot is hot.

In our area which had easier access there were literally hundreds of migrants would come through when the salmon were swimming upstream to spawn. They left behind so much trash that we finally got the Fish & Game Wardens to come out. At night they caught & fined many of them for their illegal snagging of the salmon. Most of them also got tagged for Trespassing as parts of the river passed through private lands.

As a boater I avoid bank fishermen. I have got tangled with a couple of people because I was unaware where their lines were but I apologize and felt stupid for doing it. I bass fish and don't troll but occasionally people will leave lines out unattended. If you don't see anyone on their dock you assume no one is fishing but if someone is fishing I don't fish that dock. You have to show respect to earn it. For me fishing is peace of mind and don't want to be angry while doing so. Some people don't have common sense. We need to respect each other. There's some docks where the dock owners don't like it when you fish close so to avoid confrontation I just don't fish them.

Unattended lines are another big problem. I run into that everywhere I fish and people leave lines out on purpose constantly which trollers snag the rigs or drag the rods into the lake. Usually, they were leaving out big baits like panfish or suckers to catch Musky leaving the fish on the hook for hours as they nap or watch a movie, or worse they catch a loon and it struggles until it dies. Now I generally cut the lines and free the bait/fish or rescue the loon. (keep a towel in the boat to throw over them and they settle down)

A good number of years ago A buddy and me were bank fishing on a section of back bay down the shore. There was a boat with four guys in it, all older, who kept snagging our lines.
When we complained, they said we were fishing 'Their water'. I'm not sure they realized how accurate I was at casting big sinkers with big hooks tied on for effect. Nor did they notice that one of us, my buddy suddenly was gone. (He was an amazing swimmer, and free diver). The first sign they noticed that something was really wrong was when he reappeared on the shore holding a drain plug hollering "Hey guys, you know what this is for?". It didn't sink in right away. Then they realized that all their lines were cut and tied together under their boat. As one guy reeled in one line, it pulled the line on the opposite side down. They sat there fighting each other for a bit before they realized they were taking on water. By the time they realized what a guy holding a drain plug on the shoreline laughing meant, all they could do was beach the boat so it didn't sink. Too bad they chose to beach it on the muddy marsh side of the channel, we could have had another conversation on life's lessons.
That same buddy who swam out and took their drain plug was good for tricks like that. We always wondered why he ever came fishing in a boat because so many times he'd just roll off the back of the boat and disappear for hours. One of the first incidents we had with him was back in the 80's when he first got out of the service. We were out catfishing, that time in a boat, when a guy on a jetski kept circling the boat and running off, we moved twice and he followed us. Then we heard a splash and my buddy slipped into the water off the back.
As the jetski came by again, all we saw was an arm come up out the water and the guy face planting in the drink. As the jetskit circled and came to a stop, my buddy climbed on it and took off. We didn't see him again till the next day. The guy on the jetski got picked up by a buddy and they went looking for the lost ski. We never did get the story on what happened to the jetski, but I suppose he ran it till it ran out of gas or it left at some water-side bar or marina, or gifted to the first person who would take it. He would never say and since he's no longer with us, we will never know.

I have a similar story. I fish in a tidal river from the bank and cast out no more than 15 metres (about 16 yards). The river is at least 200 metres (220 yards) wide. Up river is a rowing club and they tend to get out rowing with their coach following in a powered boat early mornings while fishing. Instead of going out into the middle of the river, they row past about 10 metres from the bank and always snag my line and those of other fishers. After this went on for a few fishing sessions, I changed all my lines to 100lb breaking strain. Heavy to fish but I get joy from seeing them tangled in fishing line that they have no chance of snapping off. Not my fault if it cuts into their arms. They will learn eventually.

If someone starts doing like those idiots I reel in my poles and keep what I drag out of their boat then I close the gap on a spark plug and cut the rig off one of my poles and tie on the spark plug at the threaded end. This leaves the pointed end able to hit their boat. When it's all ready I take aim and let it fly right into the side of their boat (I cast it like a sinker). Most times I can jerk it back out and throw multiple times. The spark plugs I use are the large ones.

We had this with kite surfers. We had been fishing since daybreak about three hours later about 10-15 of them turned up and there were at least twenty in our group spread out along three hundred yard stretch of shore line. They started surfing across the area that were were casting into as if they had a right to do what ever they wanted. Well after some of our guys had their lines snagged we all came up with the same solution. In Unisom we all reeled in and attached 5 ounce weights and started practicing our power casting. Lead weights travelling at over 150 miles an hour seemed to get their attention . On this occasion direct action seemed to get the job done and they moved along the coast some.

Jet skis, charter fishing boats, kayaks, etc. One jetski got closelined. Funny thing is -- that line wraps around their props and burns out their multi-thousand dollar engines. I will have to say though, a 6 oz weight chucked by a big pole will put a hole in their boat.

WE got some really greezy walleye anglers here on Oneida Lake too. Elitest mentality but can't fish without beer lol. I even saw a few of em posting in a facebook group that they put bed springs in the water at the end of their docks to mess with bass anglers. Proud of littering?! Insane.

I'm a shore fisherman as well, but I've never had this happen to me... mind you I have only put lines out in the river...not many trollers in the river. But if I had ever come across these type's I don't even want to think about what I would have done to their boat ...but I usually have my wrist rocket handy.😉
