My 70 year mother clicked on this thinking it was the comedy drama Jam and Jerusalem. Now she's in the corner of the living room in the fetal position.
Experimental comedy is just somethiing you do not see on mainstream television. I don't know what powers of persuasion or blackmail Chris Morris had to get this stuff onto free to air TV, but I'm very glad he did!
TV and radio commissioning was a very different thing in the 90s; experimental/darker comedy was actually embraced, and gold like this got a mainstream audience. The Blue Jam series was on Radio 1 of all places, where they pushed radio comedy; for instance Mark & Lard's evening show, which had a world of its own. Channel 4 had a late-night weekend strand called 4Later, which was full of off-the-wall content (including this), that you just won't see on mainstream TV now.
You've finally had your first Julia Davis experience (the thick woman from 17:00)! Unique genius comedy actor and writer. I've mentioned this before, but you really MUST try her greatest masterpiece, Nighty Night. In the realm of dark comedy, I think it is unparalleled.
yeah, I saw Jam years ago when it was first on TV. Before I rediscovered Jam on youtube recently, that "central heating" sketch was pretty much the only thing I could remember clearly - it stuck with me for 20+ years, and is one of the most bizarre and disturbing things ever broadcast probably.
@@Problembeing Oh and on the DVD, "Casual Parents" has a laughter track. And it somehow makes it far more sinister. I think it's the thought of this type of humour being laughed at by so many people.
Chris Morris is a genius. He did a very funny thing with Peter cook before he died. Only audio, but it’s on RUclips it’s called “why bother”. Have a listen when you’re tinkering about and enjoy.
All improvised. A couple of bullet points i think, but they just booked a studio, went in and Morris would kick start Greeb Streebling and they were off. Oh, I forgot Arthur's crack pipe. Beautiful
One of the more darkly abstract British sketch shows, Jam is sick, twisted - perverted, even - and quite brilliant. Not for everyone, and it does get darker as it goes on, this is a dark odyssey into the nightmare realm of dreams. Something like that, anyway.
Was going to say, beautiful song (especially after a few smokes at 1am) it was used often in Salad Fingers by David Firth, which upon discovering this show I've come to realise was definitely an inspiration of his. The humour is very similar.
This is one of those things that, even though it was just 6 episodes and so long ago, certain stuff just sticks with you. I will always remember the bit about the guy jumping multiple times from a balcony and a skit from another episode with the 6 year old girl and the dead body.... ...you'll see, if you keep going.
My god, it's been like 3 or 4 years since I requested this, I'd given up on seeing it. You think this is weird? On late night Channel 4 they had a "Remix" version of the show called "Jaaaaaaaaam" that had the weirdness ramped up a million-fold, with even more trippy visuals and music.
One of the best audio visual experiences ever created. Listen to the radio series 'Blue Jam' if you can, it is a true mind fuck with headphones. Check out 'Smack the pony' and 'Big train' from around the same time. Always enjoy the content. Thanx. Peace All
When you were asking why he (Chris Morris) was so red, I think it was partly the lighting and also because he has a large red birthmark on one side of his face and neck which they usually cover with makeup when he's onscreen.
This whole series is like a bad acid trip....hysterically funny at times, Chris Morris is a genius, I don't think anyone has ever pushed comedic boundaries the way he has.
I remember the radio version quite clearly but not sure it i ever caught the tv version. Looks brilliant. I'm off to amazon to get the dvd if there is one.
Best ever reaction video! There were some scenes that quickly faded in and out during this episode - e.g. the duck and the man being led by the dog. They are from the DVD, 'My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117'. Paddy Considine (Dead Man's Shoes) is in it. There was an audio only version of My Wrongs too, included somewhere in the Blue Jam radio series and it is much better than the DVD, possibly the best thing Morris has done. In fact I found all the audio sketches in Blue Jam to be even better than Jam. I shared two houses with people who introduced me to this sort of stuff and one day we put Jam on when another friend popped round and we nipped across the road to the petrol station to get some rizlas. We thought he'd love it because he had a really warped sense of humour himself. By the time we got back he had switched it off because he found it too disturbing.
Ive never seen anyone merge the combination of confused, scared, joyful and lost like this reaction before lol Chris Morris is a complete nutcase and Genius rolled into one lol Bravo for this my friend
Most of the material was originally in a radio series called Blue Jam. Some of the sketches use that original audio, that's probably part of why '4ft Car' is filmed the way it is for instance. Chris Morris originally wanted the radio series to go out at 4am, because he reckoned that's when disturbing things are most powerful!
Please please PLEASE do the rest of the show. I can’t wait to see your reaction to some the best sketches, Plumber Baby, Sex for Houses and Lucy Tiseman.
Jam is a classic show, I used to stay up past midnight quietly watching it on a small crt in my room aged 15, mesmerized...probs too young ha. Funny reactions
I remember seeing this for the first time and being blown backwards by it. It reminded me as a kid watching Monty Python shows and being uncertain of how far the cartoons were going to go. This whole series is bleak, disturbing and uncomfortable to watch and yet it is, for me , Chris Morris' masterpiece. Just the way it is shot in so many different styles, the use of music and the whole sense of underlying sadness about how the world portrayed could become real.
jam credits is no longer a real website, before it was litterally just a page for the credits of Jams crew with a downloadable artillery strike sound effect available in 4 formats
Some of the sketches taken from the radio show work better in audio - the doctor ones are a good example; plus the way the sketches are interspersed with full length tracks leaves you in a spin, with the tracks kind of implying that the world goes on, unfazed by the madness.
I think the doctor ones translate particularly well to screen to be honest. Even the ones that work less well on screen compared to radio are better than examples from other shows.
and since it's nearly quarter to five in the morning here in the actual UK ... and my first post to you, as was watching your recent presentation of some of the young ones comedy program! i never did see this series, but loved his future projects the day today and brass eye, i even printed out the scripts for them so i could read them and laugh even more, just brilliant stupidity! another one to look out for is a guy called victor lewis-smith ... jet black 80's british comedy, and for an impressionable young lad, i LOVED it! and i'm gonna subscribe cheers
Awesome, I've been looking forward your reaction to Jam since you first did BrassEye 3 years ago! I think your reaction was about the same as when I first watched it haha.
When it was first broadcast there was also a late night version of this show called Jaaaaaamm, in which all of the audio and visual distortions are taken to an even more extreme. Sort of like a DJ remixing the original episode.
I know I'm a bit late to the party but the website for the credits is still around and has been there for over 20 years. (Edit) Apparently, I can't access the website but I once did about a few years ago.
I was looking forward to this . I wanted to see if it was one of those shows that was weird at the time but quite mainstream now . Nope , still as weird as fuck ! The slowed down trippy sketches actually make me feel a bit disorientated and queasy .
I love your reaction. Please do the series (although the impact lessens after the first, understandably). Also the radio series Blue Jam is better. Some of it is also on RUclips in full. There are sketches on Jam which just don’t work and are simply mean but the general weird atmosphere works wonderfully. Incidentally I discovered the Swedish film director Roy Andersson’s work through reading the comments on RUclips beneath an episode of Jam. Andersson’s films have a similar aesthetic and subject matter. My thanks to the RUclips commenters involved. Who says RUclips comments are worthless! 😊
Every now and again I'm up early and pop into your channel to see what's new 5am was too early in the day for this; I'm not even sure if there is even right time for whatever that was It was certainly interesting though; the audio and visuals do add something. I'm not big on dark comedy but without the effects some of the sketches could fit on another show Also not sure if it was intentional or coincidental but the Doctor reminded me of Dr Wakefield; the guy who said the MMR jab caused autism and created a wave of vaccine skepticism I often watch some of your reactions again because it's an easier way of finding a particular episode of a show Don't think I'll return to do that in this incidence; another episode might peak my interest but hard to say I'm just going to sit and contemplate life for a bit now and find something funny to watch afterwards I have no idea what you did but that's what I'm doing
Objectively, it's dark comedy. If you were 20 something in the 90s, subjectively it was the absolute fucking shit. It's dated, unless you're twisted and dark
Great reaction / only reaction anyone possibly could have! Hope you get enough likes to carry on with it, but, be warned, later episodes do get a bit dark...

Has anyone requested Nathan Barley? Another Chris Morris gem

I've mentioned Nighty Night before as well . It always seems to get overlooked . I don't know why . It's a genius cringe fest with an all star cast .
The plumber and the baby sketch is probably the darkest one in the whole show.
That and ‘the fixer’ and the ‘casual parents’ sketches.

I'd never even heard of this. Definitely an experience, nobody can do dark like Chris Morris!
Never saw this before either, it seems I missed a lot of Chris Morris back in the day. This is so perfectly weird, I love it.
Welcome.......mmm.....Welcome.....I've had this in my head for 20 years.....mmm.....blue chemotherapy wig....JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM
Does anyone remember Monkey Dust? That was a weird dark sort of dystopian sketch comedy.
I much preferred Monkey Dust to Jam, this is just a bit too abrasive. The 'loving you' woman with the space hopper always makes me laugh though.
"In my country, I am Jonathan Ross..."
Monkey dust was wack
@@SirMilkzz It wasnt. Monkey dust was amazing.
God these were the days. Morris is a bona fide genius, and Channel 4 was incredible in the late 90's - it introduced me to so many amazing artists.

Channel 4 in the late 90s was something it should have remained. I doubt we will ever see tv like that again.
Fark! I thought all my acid flashbacks had stopped in the 90's... this brought them right back.
