  • The emergence of Sally Gunnell as a world class 400m hurdler. A great race and a tight tussle between Flintoff-King and Ledovskaya.

I know exactly where I was when I watched this race.
Flintoff-King was 3rd coming into the last 100m.....She trained drug free for years.....coming in to this Olympics....Her greatest supporter....her sister... died 2-3 weeks before this race.
The finish rewarded her for all the runs she did towing a small commercial tyre behind her...I KNEW she had won ..ALL of my neighbours who were at home in my unit block knew she had won BEFORE it was officially announced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went off my nut......She had trained for those LAST 16 STRIDES!!!...............She was the fittest runner in that field, physically and mentally. She actually said that as she straightened up out of the curve.... she felt an almost physical push forward in her back central core.....and believed that was her sister.
I think that this finish, the closest in Olympic history in this event, along with the Australian men in the 2000 Olympic 4x100m freestyle relay final and Haile Gabrselassie winning the 2000 Olympic 10,000m by .07 secs, are the great finishes I have seen in watching the Olympics since 1968

I did see both the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as well as the 1988 Seoul Olympics. That time was in school and college respectively. Those times were memorable times.

Hi Anuradha can u please share what was people's reactions then when PT Usha lost bronze medal in 0.01 sec in 1984 Olympics. I came to know that first they announced Usha's name as a bronze medalist later it was changed after photo finish. Is it true?

What a performance beating all the drug cheats from East Europe (not their fault) and North America (was their fault). Excellent performance - forgot how close this race was.
    Well done Aussie girl.

The 400m hurdles have always had photo finishes. Farmer and Gunnel, Batten and Buford, this.

Yes. In 1984, it took 30 mins to take a decision for a bronze medal between Christiana Cojaccaru from Romania and PT Usha from India based on photo finish.

Debby Flint off king well deserved win. Even after this bitter experience, Tatyana repeated same mistake in 1992 Olympics and lost the bronze medal, though she and bronze medalist crossed the finish line on same time (54.31 sec)

@metsdudenj Yeah - course she was. Like all US athletes were clean such as Carl 'Stimulants in Toothpaste' Lewis, Flo Jo, Harry Butch Reynolds. Same way years later Gatlin, Jones, CJ Hunter, Montgomery et al... None of them drug cheats. My mistake they must have been representing another country.

MmeDesgranges, your ignorance is sky high and train of thought (if you happen to think on your own and not just regurgitate what is drilled into your head) is fastidious, to say the least. You want to talk about "heart" and go on to make assumptions and sweeping generalizations.
The self-righteous, holier than thou, attitudes of people like you is so tired and hypocritical.
