Blue Telemark Dala horse - Norwegian Rosemaling - Art of Lise - ASMR/pandemic therapy

- Welcome back to my studio for a Dala horse rosemaling day! I am painting this Dala horse with Jo Sonja acrylic paint by Chroma_inc. I am using Prussian Blue/Burnt Sienna Mix (1:1) for a the dark blue, Dark Blue mix plus warm white for light blue mix, and warm white for the white.
For a brush, I am using Jo Sonja sure touch 1340 Round #4. The Dala horse is made by Lusk Scandia woodworks, www.luskscandiawoodworks.com, Dala Horse , 7" tall - item #725-xl.

You freehand so beautifully. I hope to, some day, way far away. Tusen takk for your videos. My father was the painter, but he just passed away. Sometimes I look at all his paints and brushes and cry because I don’t know where to start. You help though.
Hello Sidney, this is kinda bittersweet , I’m here because of the same reason. My father was quite a known painter/ folk style, but in Sweden, in just Dalarna very often. But he passed away last year and now I’m trying to figure out how he did it..:/ I wish I spent more time learning his tricks. Now I can only admire and study his old “kurbits” as it’s called here in Sweden. one great thing he taught me was to Practice the scrolls and leafs with cheap acrylics on the stainless steel in the kitchen! you get the muscle memory and you can just wipe it off and practice again and again without wasting paper or other materials. hope it helps and good luck with your painting👍

Fantastic job on the first side, but I would like to know how you make the opposite side nearly identical to the first side. Just curious. Thank you so much for sharing! The Dala Horse, however, is not carved very well, at least not in the traditional way. It is simply cut out and rounded on the edges. Nevertheless, your painting is awesome!
Thank you for your comment and for your question. I will remember to do a video on this question! In regards to how I make it nearly identical, there are two ways that I can do that. First, and the one that I would recommend for anyone starting out in rosemaling, is to take tracing paper and trace the design. Then using transfer paper, transfer the design on to the opposite side. The second way, for more experienced painters who paint freehand often would be to print out a picture of the first side and use that picture as a guide while you free hand the design onto the second side. I try to make the design as identical as possible but I am totally fine with slight differences here and there. It makes each horse design unique and personal.

As an artist myself and not experienced in Rosmaling, I would probably follow your advice, using either one technique or the other. I do agree with you that it is preferable to keep the design unique by permitting slight variations on either side. That is what makes it a unique and personal original. Thanks again for sharing!

Thank you so much for your kind words!! They really touch my heart and I am very thankful for them. I apologize that it took me so many days to get back to you. To answer your question, the medium I am using is my own mix. It is a ratio of 1:1:1 of Jo Sonja by Chroma Retarder, flow medium and glaze medium.
Lise, EDGY DO YOU CALL "C" STROKE AN "S" STROKE?
YOU DID NOT USE 1 S STROKE. YOU SAY IT ON ALL YOUR VIDEOS.
Hello, thank you for mentioning that. Actually there are a number of S strokes in this design. There are C strokes built into each "flower" with S stroke "leaves"coming off of them. There is also a long s stoke that comes off the c at the back of the horse. The c and s's all work together.
First of all you said that you base coated the horse with the JoSonia product. JoSonia acrylic gouches and basecoats do not have ANY oil in them!!
You misrepresented the product that you used to base coat that horse was a Jo Sonja product.
There should not be any oil on it however if you basecoated it and THEN you got oil on it from your hands then you should tell your audience that's where the oil came from that got on IT.
As far as the vinegar is concerned vinegar breaks up oil. Vinegar is the best household cleaning product that you can use.
It sanitizes and it dissolves oil and grease.
I apologize if I was not clear in my explanation. The oils were not from the paint, but from my natural "oils' from my hands handling the horse. It has been prepped to paint for a while and has been moved to my work space numerous times for me to paint, and then another piece has gotten ahead of it. Thank you for pointing out that I was not clear in regards to the fact that I was not discussing oil paints itself.
My rosemaling career started with oils and I had worked with them for 20 years before switching to acrylics full time around 20 years ago.
I agree that vinegar is one of the best household cleaners you can use.

It was pretty clear she meant oils accumulated after base coat. Relax.
