  • Thank you for joining me for this fun tutorial for the difficult style of rosemaling called Gudbrandsdal. This style is based on the acanthus leaf style of woodcarving and that is what makes this style so difficult. The turning of the leaf gives this style the 3d effect in a 2d. I hope that this video will be helpful in demystifying Gudbrandsdal.
I am painting on cereal box cardboard.
The background color is Deep Pond - JoSonja paints by Chroma inc.
Acrylic paints - Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna, Warm White
Oil Paints - Rembrandt - Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna, Titanium White
Acrylic medium - Flow Medium, Retarder Medium, Clear Glaze Medium
Oil Medium - Boiled Linseed Oil
    Brushes - Acrylics
    JoSonja Sure Touch Round - 1350 - size 3
    Liner - Kingart 9374 - size 10/0

After watching a fair amount of your videos I went ahead and 'tried' to being rosemaling my kitchen archway. To be honest it turned out quite well but I'm always my worst critique XD But now I am hooked and want to do my entire house!

Is this oil paint or acrylic? I don't speak your language, I speak Portuguese, I'm using Google translator to write. Thanks. Your work is beautiful

I am painting in acrylics. Traditionally this is an oil "wet on wet" on form. I began in oils and painted with them for over 20 years. I began transitioning to acrylics about 22 years ago. Thank you so much for the love!!

FYI, this doesn't work well in water colors lol
Also, could you perhaps do a tutorial on the style does in Hedmark?

If you haven't had a look at the work and instruction diagrams of Master Engraver Ken Hunt, you should. And in general, if you want to learn ornamental acanthus styling, you will find that what is taught in high end hand engraving is some of the best 2D representation of acanthus being carried out today, IMO.
You are doing beautiful work. If you don't mind me saying so, in the prevailing hand engraving design work these days, the light and shadow areas are somewhat reversed from how you are doing them.

Thank you so much for your compliment and for sharing some wonderful information. I will certainly look into his work. I have done a little research, and yes, you are correct that in the actually engraving the light and shadows are the reverse of what I did. In rosemaling, the tend to be painted much how I explained in the video. But I am willing to experiment with the paint! Thank you again!

Hi! I’m am doing a project for my MIL, I haven’t made a painting in almost 15 years. Last was with my grandma, she’s passed now. Can I use these mediums with OIL paints?

Hello, I love that you are doing a project for your MIL. No, you really shouldn't use these mediums with oil paint. these are all acrylic mediums. if you are using oil paint, I use boiled linseed oil as my medium. Please let me know if this was helpful!!

Hi, thank you for asking. Os (oos) is the style in Hordaland. It is actually one of my favorite styles of late. My mor-far is from the island of Tysnes in the Hordaland region.

I am very sorry to hear that. I just went to listened to it on my computer, as well as my husbands, and we were able to have the sound up quite loudly with no difficulty. I do not understand where the problem could be in the sound for you.
