Big 80s Movie Flops That Are A Lot Of Fun

- Here at JoBlo, we love the 80s, but we'll admit that not every movie made over the course of that decade was a winner. In this Awfully Good Compilation, we dig into three huge flops that are still a lot of fun all these years later.
Staying Alive: The Sylvester Stallone-directed sequel to Saturday Night Fever was the toast of the Razzies in 1983 and helped sink John Travolta's career for a good decade.
Supergirl: The Salkinds failed to launch a franchise with this Superman spinoff, whose star, Helen Slater, found her charming performance overlooked by many critics.
Masters of the Universe: The He-Man adaptation helped sink Cannon Films and almost cratered Dolph Lundgren's career as a leading man.

On a financial side, Staying Alive was certainly not a flop
Yes that’s true. Of all the movies on the list it actually did the best financially, but critics and audiences hated it at the time.
Jesse is hands down the best narrator for JoBlo. Fun, engaging, witty and yet knowledgeable. Also his quips & one liners are pure gold. Please make Jesse the full time narrator. Some of the narrator’s are so boring I put them on the speaker at home to lull me to sleep.
That 1987 Skeletor, ah, one of the best villains ever, a Shakespearean effort by Frank Langella! 🤩
Frank reputedly claimed Skeletor to be his favorite performance. He's clearly having a blast with it!
Expendables 5 directed by Paul Verhoeven. we deserve it
I liked a huge amount of flops released in 1980's. Everything from "Cobra, They Live, , Batteries not Included, Cocoon "to Masters of the Universe". I also like a lot B-Movies from back then.
I liked Batteries Not Included
Cocoon wasn't a flop since the sequel came out a few years later. I could be wrong though.
@@charlesdavis7285 You are right. It did well. 4-5 times the budget.
Cobra was awesome and They Live is one of the best movies ever.
@@cyrusfreeman9972 Yeah. Cobra is actually the original Beverly Hills Cop.
Your review of Supergirl is HILARIOUS! (Peter Otoole in the tornado) 🤣 Now i wanna smoke a joint and watch Supergirl.
I enjoyed all of these movies and have watched each multiple times
"Far From Over" has been a guilty pleasure since 1983. I believe it even made it to the Top 10 on Billboard. 😊
That song is unironically amazing.
Originally, there was no Prince Adam in the comics either, Filmation's cartoon series invented him.
At least the actors back then gave their characters some charisma, even with a bad script and low budget. Rather rewatch those than the 200-300million superhero movies they do nowadays.
No matter how hard those movies flopped in the 80's, they're still gold when compared to the shit that comes out of Hollywood today.
It's depressing how true that statement is
I grew up on he man, so i was hyped for the movie, as a kid i enjoyed it, and i still watch it time to time.
Member seeing it on its opening weekend have not seen it in 43 years have to see it again sometime!
The 3 movies highlighted on your thumbnail I cant say they are guilty pleasures
But i love the totally insane action & horror movies of the 80.s 😎👍
When you started going into the Flash movie I had no idea where you were going...well played sir.
The MotU-Movie was probably the greatest Dissapointment of my Childhood, but Langella as Skeletor and Foster as Evil-Lyn were really great in it.
That "rape" scene in Supergirl actually begins with the two guys arriving in a semi and blowing their air horn, and not even because she's in their way. They just pull into that parking lot and announce their presence.
Sly played favorites regardless of his brother's lack of talent, pissed off the Bee Gees, and ended up with a mediocre sequel to a film with the highest grossing movie soundtrack of all time.
Highest-Grossing Movies of 1980s
1. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Box Office: $7.901 billion
2. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Box Office: $4.603 billion
3. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Box Office: $8.307 billion
4. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
Box Office: $4.744 billion
5. Ghostbusters (1984)
Box Office: $2.680 billion
6. Back to the Future (1985)
Box Office: $3.276 billion
7. Top Gun (1986)
Box Office: $2.902 billion
8. Three Men and a Baby (1987)

9. Rain Man (1988)
Box Office: $2.473 billion
10. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Box Office: $3.009 billion
None of these made the amounts here. Nowhere near
@@shunt22002 Hundreds of millions yes, but billions? Not sure how he got those ridiculous numbers?
I don't care what anyone says Masters of the Universe was awesome and should have done better at the box office
Fresh faced Cortney Cox. Sweet.
I'm 9 minutes in and still giggling at the 'bitches leave' bit.
MOTU was the film that got me interested in cheesy movies. Saw it on cable sometime in the mid-90s and started searching for more like it.
To be fair to masters of the universe, considering all the behind the scenes issues and bad writers and not having enough money, the movie wasn't that bad . The graphic for the laser blasts and lightning effects looked better then some of the stuff we got from the cw superhero shows. I think they did a good job.. definitely passable when I was a kid
It certainly had better SFX than Superman IV.
Staying alive wasn't a flop
I laughed and i enjoyed this video. Most pleased.
Awful bold calling staying alive the worst sequel when exorcist 2 exists
I rather stick with Saturday Night Fever (1977) Over Stayin' Alive (1983).
Masters Of The Universe Rulez✊🏻!
& It's Fun🤩!
SuperGirl Is Alright.
skeletor looked like Jack Palance at the final comeback line
8:44 i just spit my drink out
“Bitches, leave”
Best.
Line.
Ever.
Yes, Robocop is full of memorable crisp lines like that.
"Can you fly Bobby?"
"Dead or alive you're coming with me."
"Come quietly or there will be trouble."
"Your move creep."
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
All three movies are great in their own cheesiness and I actually prefer Staying Alive over Saturday Night Fever I think because I was born in 1976 and not old enough to watch the original that's why I prefer the over the top 1980's pop songs and John Travolta looking as buff as he never will be, for a few years I never knew it was a sequel as the tones of both films are vastly different.
It so strange to hear about bad vfx in Masters of the universe. It actualy well made. Fly8ng scenes in here more complicated to make then in the BTF, and they make a good job. Just remember how bad somerimes was vfx in first Ghosbusters, or in Flash Gordon. A dont know... its all just 80s.
Love ya, Jesse!
Anyone that thinks that Night Fever is the worst sequel has never seen Highlander 2 The Sickening, There should have been only one.
… there’s no fun to be had viewing Supergirl; it’s simply an excruciating experience, and could be the worst movie ever made.
Well it would be very easy for Ex-5-ables to become a box office success, just spend under 10 million dollars making it and rely on the fact that movie tickets will be $100 each to unnaturally inflate the box office receipt. It makes no sense why they base it on dollars made when it should be based on total tickets sold.
those wannabe haha inserts ... no... just no ...
wow I had to fast forward through your Staying Alive portion, just TALKING about it bored me.
👍👍👍🎥
Compares make up of he men to CGI now, haa, no comparison
first time first xD
Grease 2 was awesome!
