- Antique Pine Vs. New - Torching Wood. In this episode, I see what holds up to the torch better antique pine or big box store pine. I got some antique pine from a local lumberyard and I torch it, brush it and finish it. Pretty surprised with the results too.

Hey Brother, ...Great video!!! I friggin learned about Pine, and nobody died! #VICTORY ... CHEERS NICK! YOU ROCK BROTHER! 🔥💪🏻😎👍🏻
Thanks, Bob!
Cheers
Wowww I want old pine now! Beautiful work build dad build
Thank you!
Cheers
Haven't seen any old growth pine in ages... last I had was from an old movie theater that was being demoed.. I had 25ft 2x4's without the least bit of warp or twist. The theater had been built in the late 20s in OKC. The grain pattern was great.
Yeah, the lumber yard has a pretty decent amount. Love the way it looks!
Cheers
Loving that antique pine white 😍 👌 🤘🤠🥃
Me too!
Cheers
Good job bro!
Thanks!
Cheers
I definitely think the antique pine wins overall. With the Shou Sugi Ban application, I think it wins if you're using lighter dye or a natural oil. Great video! Thank you!!
I agree!
Cheers
Comes from the longleaf pine tree which grows around the southern coast of the United States.. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina etc ...
Super tight growth rings because it takes so long to grow...super hard Janka rating....example..
White oak .1360
Longleaf pine..1225
Eastern white pine...380...
Thank you for continuing to pump out these videos they're very educational
Interesting. Thanks for the info!
Cheers
Old growth red. A bar mantle made of old growth with the red dye would have that mellow but underlying statement of secrets past, careful whispers and long remembered evenings.
Yas!
I like the ancient pine ... I think I'm going to try a project with that. It has the old barn wood look that I like.
I definitely dig to look of the antique pine!
Cheers
Nice! I preferred the box store for the linseed oil and the red but antique for the white
Agreed!
Cheers
I love the old pine in white, but prefer the new pine in the other 2. Nice job.
Me too.
Cheers
Is when building a project project doing the burnt wood what do you recommend burning the wood 1st and then putting it together or put the project together then burn the wood
It really depends on the project. For more intricate projects I suggest cutting your stock long and burning first. Then cut to fit and burn the edges to match.
Cheers
Love the shirt... "can't talk building shit"
Its a way of life! LOL
Nick, What spray did you use to finish it?
Just a spray lacquer
What is your thoughts on doing a video spanning your Shou Sufi Ban color brands from start to finish? I remember you used to use Unicorn spit, and remember vaguely when you went to leather dye, but would be cool to see it kind of layer out and your likes/dislikes of the different products now that you have used more.
No a bad idea at all...
Cheers
Noticed you sprayed on the finish. Is this your preferred application? if so what are the pros and cons in your opinion? Love your work.
Depends on the piece. For smaller things and for these types of videos I prefer spray finish because it's quick and easy. Larger pieces I usually opt for a wipe or brush on finish (and sometimes mix it up for my sprayer).. My preference is usually the easiest thing to work with. LOL
Cheers
You look like Dr. Robotnik from sonic the hedgehog in the thumbnail.... Nice
Does the way the new and old is dried make a difference? Air dried vs. kiln dried.
I'm fairly certain they were both kiln dried.
Cheers
When I'm using my nylon brushes on a drill its starts to almost "burn the wood." Am i using the drill to fast??? Help
Too fast or pushing too hard. Let the brushes do the work.
Cheers
What! ..... 😆 depends on your project and the look you need...but the antique pines character is way better looking.
Agreed!
Nailed that first like! Bam! 💥
You rock!
One minute into this and I can already tell it’s a yellow pine v SPF thing.
Figured you’d have gotten than from the title. 🤣🤣
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild So what a lot of folks may not know is what is sold as white wood or presumed to be pine is SPF or Spruce, Pine, Fir, which miht be several different types of soft wood. You also have some loblolly pine and white pine available in some markets .... but yellow pine in my opinion is the hard stuff, particularly when you have some full of pitch. Nice job on your videos, keep them comin please!
@@fordguyfordguy Right on!
On first thought I'd say that the antique pine would be the better choice for any kind of natural looking finishes, like oils, waxes, and most stains, but because the grain is so much more intricate than the younger "big box" pine, it doesn't really work for bringing out vibrant colors.
Antique pine - Wins for natural finishes
Young pine - Wins for vibrant Color finishes.
Agreed!
Lol
😜
Do you mean yellow pine versus white pine
Not sure. I was told that it was old growth pine.
