- DIY Wood Burning Technique on Oak With Unicorn Spit
In this episode, I use Shou Sugi Ban to create a textured oak finish. Shou Sugi Ban is a DIY Wood Burning Technique. This technique brought out character in this wood that I wasn't suspecting.

Burnt, brushed and the white looks awesome
I agree!
My hot maxx came in Saturday, so I tested it out on some scraps of pine. It's crazy how that texture of the wood grain "pops" after being torched. I've seen several people talking about the Unicorn Schmitt, so I ordered some yesterday. Thanks for posting all these Shou Sugi Ban vids!
Sure thing!
PS. I think they carry Unicorn Spit at Michaels now...
Cheers
Love your videos on burning and dying wood! We have made some amazing things, thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks, Becky!
Cheers
I love the results of the wood that was chard first. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting.
Cheers!
Very cool stuff. Opens up new possibilities I had not considered
Right? The first time I did oak it did not go well...LOL
Cheers, Mike!
Really cool man! I dig the side by side comparisons!
Thanks my leather clad brother...
Clinkies!
Burnt first the turquoise was amazing.
I'm definitely going try your technique for my pyrographic crafts
😂🤣
Great video as always man!
Love it!
Appreciate it, sir!
Cheers
Love the burn first and colors 👌🏼
Cheers!
hi pal, love your videos. I've just started to line my van out and going to use your wood burning 🔥 process on the cladding I've just bought some Silver Artistic Vivations Metallic - Mercury and was wandering whats the best ratio to water it down to go a bit further as there is a lot to do,thanks in advance ,liverpool uk.
👍
Hey Anthony!
I usually use about a 1:1 ratio or water to UNiCORN SPiT
Cheers!
Great video. Crazy as usual. Don’t change👍👍👍👍
LOL
I'll try...
Cheers
Burnt most definitely! 🔥🔥
Agreed
Always burn 🔥 I also enjoyed the bloopers at the end
Agreed!
And Cheers!
Another great video!
Thanks, Bryan!
Clinkies
Sounds weird but try this because it came out awsome. Dye the wood with keda then burn the lines . Kind of done in reverse Came out great!
Nice work! Thanks for the videos. Do you use wood conditioner before you stain or dye?
I do not use conditioner normally. Seems like it's only necessary with traditional low end stains.
Cheers!
very cool! what if you engraved it with the Xtool? I wonder how the colors would play out then.....
I depends on how much texture there is.
If there's too much texture the laser goes in and out of focus and doesn't give a consistent result.
Cheers
Burnt. Pops the colors!
Thanks, John!
Cheers
Definitely burn first. Looks the best!! Also do a pt2
Roger that!
Hey curious about the restorer. How long do the wire wheels last? They are pricey so I'm curious if they hold up. I do a lot of burning with my projects. Thanks!
Honestly, I can't answer that yet. I've had that wheel for about a month and it shows very little signs of wear. But I haven't had one long enough to see it die, yet.
Cheers

Burnt looks awesome
Yasssss
Looking at doing this on a sideways whiskey barrel cold smoker, 2 questions, does the dye come in a bright green and have u tried it on the oak??
Hey Wesley!
You'd probably be looking at Dragon's Belly or Navajo Jewel:
bit.ly/2z09cjf
Beauty of US is you can mix two colors together if you can't find the color you're looking for.
I have not used the green to date. Let me know if you have any questions!
Cheers!
I'm going with the flow, and it's got to be burnt first. 🔥
Agreed!
On the side by sides, am I understanding the written descriptions correctly that you charred, brushed, painted them black, then stained them? Just wondering about the painted black reacting with the stains.
No reaction that I've noticed. Of course, Unicorn Spit is water soluble, so I wouldn't expect a reaction.
Cheers
Hey Nick Quick question what finish to use on red cedar to keep the aroma
Aromatic cedar should not be finished. Anything you use will seal in the smell
Cheers
Burnt then the spit looked incredible...
Burn ones looks better to me brother and yes can u doing a part 2 to this plz great video cheers 🍻
Will do, brother!
Cheers
Dose this work with beech ?
great video too
Dunno. You’d have to try it.
i bought cheap home depot 3.5" wide furring material for the trim on my shop/mancave re-do. burning /charring 8ft at a time . going to try varathane antique white and the aqua...we will see
I want to hate you, but I just can't! Lmao I love the videos brother
Damn...harsh. LOL
Cheers
Burn first-defo.
Part 2 -yes please
Turquoise- whoosh that’s fab 👍
Cheers!
I gotta try that there Unicorn Spit. The MinWax looks good, but damn bro...that color you get is nice.
Thanks brother.
Burnt looks way better and that would be a big Yes on a part two...
Roger that!
Clinkies...
Burnt first is definitely the best
Agreed!
Please do the part 2!
Absolutely.
Has the part two video been made?
Not exactly. What did you have in mind?
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild I have been trying to do an epoxy finish on my burns with unicorn spit and have been having issues with that maybe a video with apply some epoxy to them.
Would I be able to get by with a heat gun?
Hey Jeremy!
No. It doesn't generate enough heat. (I mean it might, but I would be afraid you'd kill the heating element in the gun it would take so long).
Cheers
Супер👍
🥃
Burnt 🔥
I like the burnt with boiled linseed oil.
Excellent Choice!
Man super cool video but that loud as* music is killin me I’m watching this on my shop tv hooked to a full 9.2.6 surround sound with dual 15” subs and it almost blew the wood of the torsion box assembly table lmfao!!!!!
Turn the volume down...
Someone was fired up during this video! Duuuuude that char Metallic Turquoise wins in my book for sure.
😜
Part 2 please
Roger that
Gotta light it up man
Agreed!
Burned is best. The whites looked good either way.
Burnt first looks best
I whole heartedly agree!
Cheers
I like the one that was burned
Me too!
@@BuildDadBuild Keep making your fun videos...good inspiration
О вкусах конечно не спорят, но красить красивое дерево очень жалко.
🔥 burnt
Agreed!
You had to ask....
Always burn first!!! We don't distress it, we burn it.
LOL
Agreed!
Cheers
Here’s one for you Chief. How would this look on OSB? Sh#te is my thought but thought I’d ask
I don't know if I've ever seen it done. I'd be a little worried the torch might be an issue with the glue.
@@BuildDadBuild well I’ve just burned some but can’t attach a photo
I like the burnt better
We like them extra stanky
Hell yeah!
I liked the burn first. They all looked good but the burn won out.
Agreed!
