When you removed the layer of burnt wood by using brushes and exposing the natural color of the wood, is this piece of wood still protected by the remaining layer of the charcoal? Could you still use it in the project outdoors and not be worried about contact with the elements? I am just a bit worried that if you remove too much of the charcoal and expose the original wood layer, that it is not protected by the burning process anymore as much as it would be if you have not brushed so much charcoal off of the wood.
In this application I'm not concerned about it being weather proof. However I have seen siding done the same way. Burned then brushed before installation. Cheers

Is it possible to do this on pressure treated pine deck that is already in place? I would love to do this on our deck. It has been in place for almost 4 years
You can. However, please be mindful of what you're releasing when you burn pressure-treated lumber. The chemicals in the lumber are toxic. Wear a respirator and make sure your neighbors aren't within close proximity.
@@BuildDadBuild It's a good thing I don't have neighbors. LOL.. Will I need to brush it and seal / stain it or will I be able to just let it be natural after that?

Any suggestions for how to stain different boards that are part of a panel for table top? I'm making a rainbow top and plan to do all the glue up, sanding and edge profile needed before burning and brushing the whole top. The tricky part now is deciding how to dye one board without bleeding into the color of the board beside it. Frog tape maybe?
You can try taping. Definitely use stain and not dye. Personally I would do the individual pieces and then assemble. But taping is probably your best option if you are going to assemble first. Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild Thanks for the advice! The challenge with burn/coloring before assembly is it would require a perfectly flat pannel glue up with no room for planing or sanding to make it flush. This challenge might be a fun future video topic for you.
Great video content and commentary. I am planning to make an american flag similar to what I can see in the background ~10 min. Got any tips for that? Specifically, should I burn the wood before I glue the different sections together?
Hi! Thank you for all the excellent/informative videos! Much appreciated...If you can't get a hold of Maker's Simple Finish what is your favorite alternative? They are currently out of stock so....
Ok! You’re stuff in fantastic! I want to do this treatment on a big project-the railing around my pool deck. I live on a canal in Florida. Should I start with marine treated wood? Can that be safely burned? Or does burning and sealing serve the same purpose as marine treatment? Thank you for great content!
If you are referring to the timber which has a green appearance, it won't work. The chemicals used to treat the lumber turns ii into a "wooden brick". I use a few of them as a base when I burn. Use a good pine and follow up with a stain or water sealant.
Hey Diane! Terry's correct. And it will release those chemicals into the air. You'd be better off with untreated wood with a good solid topcoat! Cheers

Can anybody advise me on how to get this result without a torch? Can I get the same result from using natural fire? My biggest concern with using natural fire is that it doesn't have a directional thrust, if that makes sense. You can direct a torch because of the gas pressure which you don't have with natural fire. Any tips?
Dude ! Dad, can I burn with glass ?? So, I bought this cool frosted glass 5 panel door and I want to try this technique! Will I ruin the glass ?? I know, I know, I should practice on some scraps before I go torching the final product.

Using stain would probably kill the aroma.
I have a beech rifle stock, would it work on that?.? Cheers
Depends on the grain.
Hi there, maker brand simple finish is no longer making that stain. Any recommendations
Yes. Boiled Linseed Oil. It's cheap and gives a similar result.
Cheers
I like your videos bud also the whiskey
So I got a question I'm making a headboard for my bed and I'm going to sand the wood down to make it smooth then I want to burn it to make the wood grain pop and then I want to stain it with like a walnut color satin cuz I don't want a lot of shine after I burn it do I sand it or is it ready to stain once it's burned hope to hear from you soon thanks for any help in advance
I never sand after I brush. The nylon brush smoothed it out.
Okay cool so I should sand it burn it with my torch and then it's ready to stain no more sanding after I burn it with the torch
Can you char knotty pine car siding or similiar wood so it can be used for outdoor house siding with very little other maintenance or some sort of one time application of something. I have the 500,000btu torch already as 5 of my arborvitaes can attest)now trellises) and the old van my neighbor used to park by them.
Shou Sugi Ban is a technique that is used to waterproof and preserve wood. You'll need to use boiled linseed oil after you burn.

Big fan here! Love your videos and am using a lot of your advice and techniques making some cool stuff. Keep up the great work! 🇺🇲
Thanks Mark!

Great videos, keep up the good work.
Thank you!

quick question does the soft wood need to be plained and smooth first or just go at it naturally
If you're going for a deep burn just go to town. The fire will create a texture and the nylon brushes smooth it out.

Great tutorial video and very well done. Quick question...what's the name of the flex shaft for your drill? I have one for my Dremel and it makes all the difference in the world so I'd like to try it on my drill when I use the Nyalox brushes. Keep up the good work Nick and cheers!
Thanks, Greg!
Looks like I forgot to add it in the description. Thanks for the heads up.

@@BuildDadBuild I'm sorry, but the flex shaft for the drill you are using in the video look bigger than the one in Amazon with the 1/4-Inch Keyed Chuck, is it the same?
@@fernandoalvarado165 Fernando, that is the exact one I ordered from Amazon.

@@landonweatherly4258 Probably brush and seal...since you'll be walking on it, the char will come loose if not.
Do u use a wood conditioner before u stain it?
Hey Ben!
No, I do not.

Another excellent and informative video! You really got in depth with this technique. Cheers!
Thanks Val!

The keeper of the snapper has demanded I make a headboard.thanx your advise is appreciated. Heard that bullit is gooood. Next on my list I'm on a Pendleton kick lately but I'm kinda fond of a canadian whiskey. Scotch bourbon, I guess most of them. Bullit rye is next. Two birds with one stone. Anyway this vid is 6 months old and you are so much more up summers coming Nick. Had a friend that suffered thru the winters he was a survivor of the war in Bosnia great guy . Winter took him he hung himself. He had no family you do so chin up. Winter bites blizzard tomorrow and - 42 windchill by sun. Think I might just stay in bed. Single digits for 7 days predicted. So burn baby burn :-)
Wow. Sorry to hear about your buddy. And fire and whiskey keep you warm!

Question for dad build dad 🤣 did you use all three of Dico 50-4 Flap Nyalox Flap Kit 4-inch Assorted Nyalox Flap Brushes because of the different grit?
Hey Chris! I mainly use the gray one. The orange for touch ups. The blue ones go in the trash! LOL
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild my wife also bought me the extension to go on my Dewalt hammer drill. It is badass! I only used the Grey one too lol
@@BuildDadBuild the only problem with building all this stuff is my wife wants to keep it all🤣😂. How can I send you some pics of some of the stuff I have done?

Love your work Nick. can you please link your flex shaft attachment as well ?
Thanks, Justin!

Simple finish is sold out what would you recommend as a backup to simple finish this is for a outdoor project.
Probably boiled linseed oil or danish oil
@@BuildDadBuild thank you sir
Great video content and commentary. I am planning to make an american flag similar to what I can see in the background ~10 min. Got any tips for that? Specifically, should I burn the wood before I glue the different sections together?

Hi! Thank you for all the excellent/informative videos! Much appreciated...If you can't get a hold of Maker's Simple Finish what is your favorite alternative? They are currently out of stock so....
Hey Kristie!
They're always out of stock! LOL They can't make enough of it.
My suggestion for a similar look is Boiled Linseed Oil.

@@BuildDadBuild thank you!! It’s because of your videos I have new pandemic projects! So many things to burn lol
Good stuff👍 Where did you pick up the Makers? Need to add some to my collection. Disregard that question, looked below.....

Thanks, Terry!
Que tintas usa para tingir a madeira , aqui em portugal pouco se vê disso
You can use a lot of different dyes. Check out Keda Dye
Do you only use the grey 80 grit Nyalox brush or do you use the other grits as well?
I mainly use the 80 grit. Occasionally I use the orange...never the blue! LOL

Are wood cabinets expensive?

Be very careful. Glass and fire don't play too well around each other.
Now this is a bit overkill...but watch the beginning of this video. And look how thick that glass is.

Can you do pressure treated wood? Or bad idea?
Bad idea. You'll turn the chemicals they used to treat the lumber into noxious fumes.

How would you handle charring a 4'x8' plywood?
Light surface burn. Too hot / deep will burn through the top layer of ply and can even cause the glue between plys to bubble.
Cheers
Did I see a video of you using a restorer for digging out the char? Do you recommend a certain restorer for Shou Sugi ban?
You did. I recently picked on up.
This is the one that was recommended to me.
