I can’t wait another year i can retire and go digging in junk yards and building motors. Im leaving NYC and moving to a rural area where things make sense.
Great Video! love building small Fords. you hit on a couple of key points to look for in building a Small block Ford. the head gasket placement(water holes always to the back!), head bolts/studs need sealant on the lower(exhaust) row, oil pump drive shaft check for seating & use the spring washer correctly. I don't now if flipping an offset piston really works in a mild engine but it wont hurt anything. couple things I do whenever i build a 289/302 now: 1. Use that exact oil pump if the engine will see some revs, I really like the doweled cover & the support for the rotor that goes through the cover plate. also you can adjust the oil relief spring for pressure. 2. Tap the front oil galleries for pipe plugs 3. have the decks surfaced - remember these things are 20-40 years old and have seen so many head cycles! lower side tends to sink and having fresh surfaces is worth the $150-$180 to deck it. also good for compression ratio which is tough to get with a short stroke engine. 4. if you need a decent replacement piston, the Speed Pro L2488F is nearly a replacement without that little dish - has a tall compression height & the metric(thinner) ring pack. have had good luck with them. 5. front damper - the 50 oz in un balance cranks won't ever be as good as a 28 oz but for under 6500 they will last a while. the good damper does help as the factory style rubber ring types will fail over time and once that outer ring spins its going to hurt itself quickly. I be this thing runs really well - that cobra cam doesn't have much overlap so running on SD should be ok. the extra airflow from the heads & intake may need more fuel but shes going to run well!!!!
Another great video. I've been a fan for quite some time, and as a fellow Ohio resident (just south of Columbus), I'm proud to admit that you've encouraged me to purchase a 1990 GT project car. It worked for me also flipping the pistons on 289s and 302s and FEs soften the chambers and they rev quicker and higher. A 410 turned into a beast with ARP bolts and flipped flat tops I pulled out of a .015 over 360FE , forged and flipped in the Merc 410, flywheel from a 4 speed 428 CJ with a top loader and I told folks it was a 390 and at 413 ci it could almost pull the Mustangs front wheels.
Sweet build. Working on a 1995 cobra right now. Already up to 2500 worth of work and parts. Still got a lot more to do. Just taking my time not really in a rush.
Built a very similiar engine way back in 2000 for the now defunct FFW Factory Stock class. 87 coupe, speed density car and ran the same Cobra cam with GT40's and Cobra intake. Car ran 12.80's@105mph, FUN car on the street.

Richard Holdner, who wrote for Muscle Mustangs or 5.0 mag (can’t remember which), recently did a video about flipping pistons on a Dodge 5.7. ZERO change in power. Doesn’t hurt anything, though.
I am currently rebuilding my 302, as the oil pump saw a shard of a snap ring from the rocker arms… anyways, I have heard about flipping pistons and always wanted to try this. Well I have just tried to do that and I can tell you it does not do anything. With a dial indicator and micrometer, the piston does not drop any further than stock and doesn’t rise further than stock. I compared a stock piston stroke to piston #1 backwards in cylinder #5 and I tried flipping piston #7 in its own cylinder. No orientation changed anything. Was actually disappointed 😂. That is what I have found with trying that, just an FYI for anyone.
Always silicone the timing cover gasket to the timing cover and not the block so when you do a cam change the gasket won’t be stuck to the block cause when you scrape the gasket off it will fall into the oil pan and you can clean the gasket off the timing cover on the table and do the water pump the same way. It just makes clean up easier and less chance of getting unwanted trash in the motor
along with the piston offset to help with TDC dwell, if you want to fake a longer connecting rod (the Boss 302 used connecting rods from the 289, so if you can find a piston to match, that's the way to go) is to use offset connecting rod shells. This will do more for getting zero deck height if you find the block wasn't decked enough, but the point is, use an oversized connecting rod bearing shell on the big end of the rod, and an equally undersized shell inside the rod cap. now you've pushed the entire rod/piston assembly a little higher up the bore. This plus swapping piston pin offsets won't make noticable power on their own, but when you do something to gain 10 hp there, 10 hp here, and 10 hp over there (like using offset deck pins to shift the cylinder head location in respect to the bore's centerline to unshroud a valve), they add up. For example, a crank scraper can be fabbed for a dollar or less and will also add some power at higher RPMs. I'd also add, the camshaft is easier to install if you do it first. stand the block up on its bellhousing, let gravity help out, and you can reach into the crankcase to guide it when the reciprocating assembly isn't in the way. And torquing down fasteners or removing stuck ones might be easier if one stands on the engine stand to keep it from running away.

@@Neomustangs i’m goin boosted. was re-watching your videos and also saw you selling some on ebay. I have the hyper pistons already out of this block I have. Do you think i should stick with the ones I got or go with the forged factory ones? again goin to be boosted

Im about to start building a 5.0 for a ranger swap. Im getting the engine from an f150. Are there any noticable differences between the f150 and mustang motor internally?
We’ll Dannie…all I have to say is, another great video to add to the lineup!!! 🎯🔥✅💯
Do you have a link to where you got the cam and part number?
Thx man.
love that budget built motor, it would be exactly what im looking to put into my 89 GT. would love to know how much would you chagre for this type of motor if you even considered building to sell? i live in CT and would drive to pick up so shipping would not be required
Yes
Do you use tri metal bearings or do you go like bi metal aluminum? Or?
Just std Clevitte 77
Did u say stock pistons and abunch other ztock engine parts?
Yes i did..
Did the 93 Cobra camshaft work on speed density? Or did you switch over to MAF
Yes
Could you possibly make a list of part numbers and where you got them from for all the gaskets and all
I have a small list at the end. No part numbers.
any porting of the cylinder head?
None
Isn't the cobra cam smaller than the regular HO cam ?
No
What’s the reason for putting the pistons pointed to the rear vs front
Didn’t I explain it in the video ?
What’s the part number on the balancer
Any rebuilders in ga I’ve been looking to join the foxbody community for years I’ve got a 1989 5.0 convertible foxbody and I wanna turn it into a daily but don’t have the support
Do the pistons have to be flipped on the rods or can you swap the piston rod combo to the other bank?
Nevermind, I just had to watch a while longer. Looks like I can just flip the piston/rod combos to the other bank.
Are the stock rods and crank just cast
Can u run 1.7 rockers on a 302 and the valves not hit
Yes
Thank you very much
Can a 97 explorer 302 use a 94 svt cobra mustang rebuild kit??
Your work is always quality. Thanks. By the way, what color of blue is your dads fox?
Ford sonic blue
Do you have a good build recipe for a 400-ish hp n/a motor?
Stroker motor
Dropping secrets for the masses, we always thought the offset was for torque as they seemed to rev out better when flipped
Right
The same applies with a short rod like In a 400 SBC. It does in theory increase torque when the cylinder wall is loaded harder.
On Engine Masters it made no difference when they tested the same Mopar engine the same way. Their conclusion was that the center offset distance was not enough to matter.
Did the cobra cam work with SD eec? Planning to do that cam for my SD coupe
Yes
Another great video!!!
Ty !
I’m looking forward on building something like this!! Where do I get the parts so I can build under 1000?
Summit racing, jegs, Resto sites.
What valve springs did you use?
I want to do this with my 84 f150 302
I was told that the e7te block was from the f150. I didn't know it was also used in the mustang
Yep. E7TE XXX or YYY roller. CE Cleveland Foundry.
@@charlesespenshade what??
Autos 87-93 did not get a different motor lol. Stop.
So you decked the block to 0.... an surfaced the heads also.... so what does that do to the compression of the motor... using copper gaskets?
Nothing really raised it a couple decimals lol..
What harmonic balancer did you use? Great video!
Trickflow
Wait i have a 99 explorer with the 5.0 in it, is the intake and throttle body off an explorer 5.0?
Yes
I’m not sure I understand is the engine producing 500 hp normally aspirated? If not what is it? Did $1000 include the engine and all the parts? Thanks.
i got a stock 91 mustang gt automatic with shift kit and aftermarket kick down cable and b&m hammer shifter and h pipe what should my first few mods be more air and fuel
Gears
@@Neomustangs what gears u think will be good in it 3:73
@@Mattys91gt YEs tha way if you went 5 speed you would still have a good high gear to roll with. some say 4.10 but thats too high for 5 speed imo unless theres a purpose for it.
