I prefer the blower for the simplicity, consistency and ease of installation. The turbo might make a little more power, but when both set ups are capable of splitting the stock block down the middle...does it really matter?
In a race it does
Well with a turbo you can actually regulate boost much easier. Power might come on slower but it comes in consistantly or linear i should say, not all at once. Also the turbo engine under daily driving will wear the engine less. The answer is simple, turbo is better for the life of the engine hands down. Thats why every diesel engine in tractor trailers are turbo engines not old school supercharged detroit and cat engines.
I've had both and been in and around a lot of both blower/turbo cars. If you want to get into the game without a lot of headache, blower is the way to go.
Centrifugal blowers have come a long way and are a lot more efficient than they used to be. They're much easier to install, less potential maintenance, and in general will be more reliable. Even a novice mechanic can install one in their driveway, usually without even having to jack the car up.
The main advantage of a turbo is obviously efficiency. Being driven my exhaust gases instead of a pulley, a turbo essentially makes "free power", no parasitic loss. The other advantage to a turbo is infinite adjustability at your fingertips. The downside is that it's a more intricate setup, much more involved installation, and more potential maintenance. Also you'll generally spend a bit more on a complete turbo kit than a blower.
At the end of the day, you can make big power with both. If you just want to have fun with a street car that you tinker with on the weekends, the blower is the way to go. I think if you're a more serious mechanic and more serious about making the absolute most power you can, take the turbo hands down.
Sounds like you own a 5.0 Mustang. They can't handle over 500 horsepower without splitting the block, even with a girdle.
@@subz3ro43 Meh, not really. I've seen as many turbo cars get walked by blower cars, as I've seen blower cars get walked by turbo cars. For 99% of street cars out there, the difference in their power delivery is negligible.
I'm old school. Centrifugal everytime! Plus you get the exhaust note as well. Also I love the typical centrifugal whistle. The main difference between both car are cubes! The green one has much higher torque capacity, plain and simple.
I had an old Vortech S-Trim (basically fresh oil fed, with straight cut gears) and man did I love that "whistle". Made a bucket load of power. I was spinning it pretty hard, so it came on in a hurry too. Made my little stroked and poked Fox body a complete death trap. Went like hell, but when it broke loose, it made your butt pucker. lol
@@alfrede.neuman8611 I understand how those work but I honestly prefer positive displacement superchargers over the turbo looking one cuz of the lack of boost down low, it's more of a drag race blower vs the positive displacement one..
@@P71ScrewHead I agree. For general drivability, the Positive Displacement blower was better. I had a 4.6L SOHC with one on it a few years back that I was spinning pretty hard and the power delivery was awesome. Didn't feel like there was a power adder on there at all.....felt more like dealt the 4.6L in on a big block 460. Instant torque and power at all times. Very controllable and a lot of fun. Sometimes I wish I never sold that car.
@@alfrede.neuman8611 oh, I know how you feel, I never ever plan on selling cars I own unless I buy them for that reason..lol Don't worry man, get you another blower n have both on there.. ;)
@@P71ScrewHead you mean a centrifugal? A turbos boost response is based on the sizing of it and your cubic inches etc. You can have a nice powerband and good power as low as 3000ish rpm with a properly sized turbo with good tuning. There is a misconception that turbos are only for high rpm power. Centrifugal superchargers do build boost with rpm and will have much more up top as opposed to 3k rpm but turbos aren't necessarily like that unless you just have a huge ass turbo on there that's too big for the application. I prefer positive displacement blowers for mostly street setups myself. My bolt on 07 gt500 is at 550 rwhp with 4.10 gears and that thing has torque for days and it is INSTANT you can't feel boost kicking in it feels like a badass big block. I have a 2650 tvs gen3r from vmp going on it this summer once I finish gathering supporting mods like injectors etc I should be north of 750 wheel with the same size 2.6 pulley I'm running now. It's gonna be a monster I may have to go back to 331 gears lol. I am running a 17x7/15x10 f14 drag pack with 275/60/15 et street r tires so it's a fairly aggressive street setup but 410 may be little much for what it's gonna be we shall see!
BREW2L: I think you’re the number 1 authority on the Foxbody game. Always doing real world work into these cars plus, a history from back in the day. This channel has come a long way! A definite inspiration to getting started, step by step bites towards getting a car done. (Although they’re never done haha)! Thanks for the content!
This is hands down one of the most intelligent videos I have ever seen on the topic. Nice work.
Loving the retro sound with that whistle! You need to race these 2 against each other. Would make for a great video!!!!
the pro charger guys, is more like a turbo that is centrifugal, it makes power in the top end because it it spools up the hard you turn the through outs like a clutch ,,a Whipple, for example, makes all its power in the bottom end because its direct drive and the speed is controlled by pully sizes, there a few trade-offs there but mostly space. a Whipple is a hood cowl no way around it. pro chargers are low-profile goodness, but they are gutless off the jump. compound them and then you get a tone of fun if you can get it out of the driveway. factors f'n factors. efi, mechanical fuel injectors, and throttle bodies., and a shit ton of tinkering
the safe way to go about it is to yank the factory-cast cranks and replace them with forged ones. no matter the make if torque is you game longer throughs on the crank and each make has a different tolerance for that it requires a stouter longer con rod and job specific sleaves.meaning what they are made of, and the proper clearance .crucial to engine life. all power adders have a mileage rating depending on the application, know them, i commend the author of the video for encouraging you to get involved with go fast there is not enough of us in the hobby to sustain it, and for that, I love him, there is a lot of $$ involved and people give up on it quick if shit goes wrong, bobby and his Friday night hot rod is all but dead for many factors the biggest gov. over reach, but I for one will never surrender. you don't need a paperweight in the driveway with a tow sticker in the window, everything worthwhile deserves careful consideration if you're a poor boi better have a side hustle and a brain between your ears. have said the have the hell at it.,,, an after though you gotta gap the piston rings for boots and if I'm not mistaken it has to have a boots target
Man... I am happy as hell to see someone worthy got the life I ordered. Love the collection. I have had "Stitch" my 89 LX Hatchback 5.0 for 23 years now, and seeing these fox's has my ass back out working on her. Thank you
🙏 thank you. I’m doing my best to keep the torch lit 🔥
Calypso car looks killer with those SC wheels! The difference for me is I’m still stuck in the 90’s so if both cars were together with the hoods up I’d be more compelled to take a closer look at the retro Vortech/Hartman combo.
Who knew (4) 18" wheels and tires would fit in the back seat of a notchback 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Calypso looks killer with the 18” .
Almost as good as it did with the SVE gold mesh 😁
Love the look of the SC wheels on the Calypso! Just sounds like you need some better tires out back. I would roast mine all the way through the top end of 3rd gear then switched to Toyo R888R’s and hook in 3rd pretty well - seconds still a battle, but my combo of twin turbo Dart 347 on 9 psi and 3.73 gears builds tons of torque.
Thank brother! It’s had drag radials on it up until a few days ago.
@elementl1166 what all did you do to the motor? I'm planning on building a 349 twin turbo stroker for my 95 5.0 f150.
Got a Ford Strokers forged 347 rotating assembly and machined Dart block from Woody and did my own assembly. 185cc Twisted Wedge heads and custom cam came from Ed Curtis. Topped it off with a ported Holley Systemax intake manifold.
Love the look of the Calypso with those wheels on it! I almost prefer those over the ‘93 Cobra wheels.
This channel is becoming my favorite channel and that calypso had me hypnotized
What a great explanation of the two cars. Those wheels look amazing on the green car and I bet they will look great on the retro as well.
Should’ve went over the price difference between the 2. Which I already know the answer. I’ve had both and I can tell you from experience I’d go the turbo route. No belts and pulleys to deal with
Turbo technology has come so far that I’d prefer to go that way over SC but either will make me happy. Also, if I were going SC route I’d go with twin screw over centrifugal they have come a long way and are making great top end boost today. Back in early 90s when I built my 331ci motor I debated NA or boosted went NA and wish I went boosted, live and learn.
It has for stock cars, when you go big... you lose all that technology. Superchargers are better for big motors, turbos are your only option on small one. Prolly a reason top fuel uses superchargers & are the fastest in the world by a LOT.
@@ohane1 ok so explain this one to me using facts, turbos provide boost just like super chargers using a compressor where a turbo spins the turbo using exhaust heat and a super charger spins co pressor using engine. When you go big do these engines not have exhaust heat? How does a turbo lose its ability to spin a compressor so cannot provide boost? Are larger turbo’s section not available for larger displacement engines because correct if I’m wrong but aren’t they common place on semi trucks with massive displacement engines? Twin screws are used in top fuel because they want full boost off idle, if they wait for a larger turbo to spool the race is over. I have to say your comment shows your lack of knowledge in turbo and super charger technology
Calypso looks perfect with those wheels & retro fox sounds so nasty… both fox’s are amazing!
I said the Calypso a month or so ago when you asked which one we thought was faster. I have a supercharged mustang and a turbo mustang and turbos are hard to beat. It pained me to say that because I've always been a supercharger fan. I love both those cars of yours but that Calypso is killer!
Unless you run with a promod style F1 or whatever style crank driven supercharger like Ryan Martin, and J.J. and alot of guys are switching to instead of twins or nitrous all 3 are competitive in their own way I've always been a supercharger guy as well but have been looking at a big single turbo for a while
Brew2L showin the luv for the GT's in a world of coupes these days. I think its great brother as I luv coupes but lately that's all everyone is building and I've always been a GT/Hatch guy at heart anyways. Keep it up man. The Calypso has come such a long way and has turned into a nasty lil monster. My ride is slowly getting to the point where I have to make a powertrain choice so its nice to see both sides of the fence. Thumbs up bro as always. Keep the good content comin.
Always good to see your little girl close out the video, so cute. What a great one , one a more quiet sleeper more so Calypso, and the Rowdy cam chopping RetroFox, both great choices.
@16:57 I couldn't tell if that was a kiddo screaming or the turbo 😂. Both sound great my man!
I think as foxbody owners, we all can relate to that grin that was underneath your face of concentration of what the car is doing while you were doing those test runs. Can't help but be happy with our toys when they work like they're supposed to!!
Absolutely! It’s bliss when it all comes together
The sound of that turbo car when he gets on it. 😍 amazing!! Retro also great 2 but....dam!
Back in the good ole days when I owned a 08 Bullitt, She was cammed with Brenspeed Detroit Rockers, FRPP intake and TB, LTs, no cats and Borla Ataks. Sounded nasty, drove great and handles great as well. I also had our 93GT pretty stock except for basic bolt on, stock heads and block. I got asked ALL the time, which is more fun to drive. I would tell them, well it depends on the mood I'm in. If I wanted to have a more spirited (as you stated) drive, then the Bullitt. If I still wanted a low spirited drive but just simply roll with the cool factor then the Fox. I've always owned a Fox, but gotta admit, I surely miss my Bullitt. Was just an all around bad ass car. It's in Jacksonville Fl now and the owner said he grins everytime he cranks it.
I used to have a 89 lx hatch. Stock bottom, x303 cam, eldebrok al heads, Paxton Novi 2000 with cog pulley setup with 15 lbs if boost. It was so much fun
That green mustang is so nice. I remember seeing one when I was a kid that same color with the snake on the fender.
They are both bad to the bone, but I've always favored the retro fox! When I see that car,I see you and the passion that you have for the hobby!👈💯🔥
Thanks John! The retro will always be my baby!
@@BREW2LFOXBODY 💯
Calypso is my favorite. Then you put those wheels on it and i love it even more . Wow.
Well, both cars are really nice, but your daughter stole the show! She's about the same age as my daughter, just getting introduced to my Fox Mustangs. Keep up the good work.
I Street drive my Turbo Bird all the time As low as 4psi on wastegate to 24psi on the highside! A proper converter makes a world of a difference on the low end throttle snap!
Also your boost control method... manual boost controllers are all in!
however Mines is electronically controlled boost by gear! I won't see max boost until 3rd then we get to cookin!! 12-14 psi ramp first 18 second 24 3rd
I run a supercharged Wrangler. This thing will be on the highway going around 65mph, then I just OPEN IT! That Supercharger pushes air in and you can feel the hp wakeup in this Wrangler. It'll be at 85mph before you even blink. I don't go TOO fast in a Wrangler because it's sitting high, but we've got it up to 123mph on the dyno. When it was stock, it wouldn't get past 88mph with the 35s on on it. And 6th gear was DEAD with no power.
Now? The 6th gear has pull once the rpms get around 3k. And the exhaust makes the Jeep sound like an exotic car around 4krpm. I'm still looking for ways to get the exhaust tuned a little better.
Big lesson? Cubic inches matter... That's why the Calypso is easier to drive. It makes more torque under the curve. Makes me really want a 500"+ BBF manual car. I'd like it in a Cougar to be different and unassuming though.
Spot on that the setup as a whole is the most important. I wish I had your problem of deciding which one to drive, and the weather for year 'round... 7° tomorrow night here
Well I differentially like mine now that it's running like it's suppose to just wish it wouldn't have taking so long lol.. those are some fantastic looking cars people on RUclips just know how good they look in person.
Glad you got her running good! And thank you brother I appreciate that!
YEAHHHHHH!!!! SKIN IT BACK!!! LOL!!!
Glad you took the time to emphasize combination and making that your expectation of choice!
I love both! But can't wait to see you line up with Andrew's ride!
Love the sound of that supercharger.
I’m by no means a ford guy. Only even owned one. I had a small window to buy a new truck before I left town for work. I couldn’t find the right deal on a Tundra like I normally drive. So I ended up getting 17 f-150 ecoboost. There first year I had it I hit 21 states for work, 52k miles. Pulled a tandem axel trailer all around the country with no issues. I couldn’t believe how fast they are. I could outrun all of my buddies with v8’s. Good trucks. But I’m back in a tundra now. In my opinion if you have the extra money, Toyota’s are the way to go.
That shot frm behind. Two bada$$ finished foxbodys in the driveway, and 2 more Mustangs in the garage bout to be saved 👍 can't wait to see the finished product on the new projects.
these mustangs are so much fun to play with! super lightweight and simple! Yet can be transformed to anything imaginable!
Definitely so one of the best race chassis Ford produced for the cheapest prices at their time love em so much man
Awesome comparison video! Thank you for making it for us!!!
That calypso is beautiful but I’d love to had that retro , just because it’s very similar to the one that nearly killed me .
Dudes gotta fleet of cars and a nice garage.
I’m happy for him.
I want that too.
Dang!!! The Sc wheels look amazing on the Calypsos
Yeah they do
Do you have to get a bigger LPH fuel pump for the supercharger? And how do you intercool it? Im looking at getting a e cam aluminum heads with a procharger on around 6-8 lbs of boost but i need to learn more before i go throw money away
Love the Calypso, but that retro fox is where it's at for me. Screams 90's and Is just awesome!🐺
Great honest comparison between the two types of forced induction SBF’s 👍 I know you love that ol’ skool stuff man & you have a point with the stock lower being a restriction. That said, i’ve got a downs ford bread box intake (gt40) for sale, bet that would wake her up a bit!
How much on the bread box love those intakes
Nice!!! Calypso is that “Saturday night shooter”!! Retro is the “old man can get it on a Sunday”””.
Have the same SC wheels on my 93 Reef blue GT. Just getting into the Fox scene. Had 2 SN95's. 1 GT and 1 Cobra. Both 5.0's. Loved them both but don't think I'll ever go back to 4th gen. Foxbody4Life. Subbed.
Both cars are amazing but the question is which one is more reliable
Most likely the supercharged
Those wheels look soooooo good on the calypso! Livin the dream man, turbo and supercharged foxes! Both are wicked.
Great video again I was thinking the turbo would be quicker. Love that your daughter gave it a thought before she answered with green one.
God bless both those cars! I send you and your family all kinds of blessings.
The calypso is looking fine with those wheels..I love them both..
It’s all your own preference and I get that, but I love those anniversary wheels on the Retro Fox. I know they’re not exactly fitting with the retro theme of the build, but it looks just perfect to my eyes.
Those wheels look good on the Calypso!!!
Both cars are bad ass!!!
Thanks for the video, but to be honest you're all over the place. I was confused as to what you really liked at the end. Credit where credit is due, nice work on both of them. They both sounded fantastic and looked good also.
Both cars are awesome but Retro Fox will always be my favorite.
They both are winners. Nice wheels on the Cobra. If I do a turbo build. I want that turbo noise that import cars are famous for.
The Sounds of Music!
Those foxbody’s are freaking awesome. Turbo fox’s are ridiculously quick, even on mild builds. I raced a turbo’s 302 fox that was on 10.5 street drag radials in my daily vortech-charged g37 recently. By the 500 ft he had 5 cars on me, I got handed my a$$. It was fun af lol
The calypso looks great with those wheels !! I think that the retro fox should get the sc wheels though and have harris lue make u some decals for one of the spokes like his and then get the new 18in 93 cobra wheels on the calypso ! Sick! Also the 65 fast back should stay with the carb set up and go with a 351 based 427 with a 4 speed just raw horsepower !!
you can add a boost controller with software to ramp in boost by gear which makes it linear.
Love the sound of the retro!
Glad the last 5min talked about how powerful na motor should be with either one. Ty
Very informative video Brew2l Really learned a lot and enjoyed this one , hope you’re doing well brother.
Taking it day by day brother 🙏
Good to see you brew! Lookin fresh with the new cut bro
100% killing it, but the retro is sounding nasty
omgggg that Calypso Green is absolutely gorgeous
New wheels looks sick! BREW2L you are killing it was this awesome content! 🔥👍👍🦊
Both cars are amazing I couldn't dream of something that seriously awesome. I just want a N/A v8 in my 87 lol 😆 small goals , love those 18s they look great 👍
Calypso looks GREAT. What a fine looking stang. Wow.
Elderbrock 😄 Good video bro👍
Yeah the difference is calipso has a ton in Equipment only in heads has like 2,000 n something flow is everything
I've asked this to several 'forced induction' guys...and without fail, everyone has their opinion, but no one seems to have solid data or info. I've been planning an AC Cobra kit for a while, and for several reasons, decided to go with a small block in it (generally, a Boss 302)...but I want to get the horsepower up to around 650, while not losing any streetability...BUT, as this will do 'double-duty' on SCCA-type tracks (think Nurbergring), I'm looking for something that will not overheat under pretty-heavy demand for 6-10 minute runs...possibly longer. I've considered roots, twin screw, belt drive centrifugal and turbos...but I really haven't found ANY information on 'coolest operations' under 50% or more loading, 50% or more of the overall 'race time'. 5-8 psi sounds just fine, though I'm not sure about 'ideal diameter' (70mm vs 85mm, etc.) to get where I'm wanting...however if I can find the 'sweet spot', I would ideally want to take a 400-hp engine to 650 via forced induction, and do it in a way that I've chosen a durable system which won't overheat, cause premature bearing failures, etc., due to 'extended runs' that are 'outside-the-box' on quarter mile enthusiasts. Any experience or ideas? (I've got PLENTY of 'forward-of-engine' space, versus a relatively tight 'over-engine' area, where I'd have to go into hood-modifications to clear anything significant that 'sat on top of the motor', like a roots type).
Strokers work good with turbos cos the bigger cubic inch makes up fr the lag, while the turb is spooling. But smaller cube supercharger also work well cos the power from the blower comes in sooner to make up fr lack of cubes. To me super chargers win hands down easy to install and instant predictable power and response.
Threshold - time it takes to make positive pressure to the point of feeling torque curve incremental increases
Lag - the time for compressor wheel to regain the momentum to pass threshold after it slows, typically from throttle reduction
Correctly sizing a turbo for the cfm of a motor instead of just throwing whatever you heard “works” solves this issue that people seem to think is inherent in the system
All of this goes out the window when you change applications! I got a 94F150 flareside short bed. I'm starting with my 351 roller block! Now, for chicken feed I can build a 393, or a straight up 357 with my good heads, 100 shot of gas! Already have everything for that! I considered a turbo 357, but for peanuts I can buy a set of 5 liter replacement with big valves reliefs, float the wrist pins, my heads and the 100 shot of gas! Let's face it, the damn things gonna smoke the tires for 2 light poles anyway I go! Think I'll us what I got and spend the money on a set of ladder bars and floaters!?? WTF, I'm 62, you gotta die of something!!
Have a TT 03 cobra and a gen5 3.0l whipple charged 2015 gt. I also have a 92 foxbody gt with a new built motor ready to go in it. I opted for a pro charger for it just for ease of installation and maintenance of a supercharger. Love turbo cars but its more of an undertaking doing a turbo setup
Great stuff!! Thanks. The Red one Sounds amazing!! 🙂
Awesome vid, B! Thanks!
Calypso looking good with the Saleen replicas, the Retro Fox sounds good. Two nice Foxes hard to say which one is better or better looking.
Great video! We fans gotta start sharing tbis channel, I swear it has something to do with RUclips why it's not multiplying. I have the bell on and still do not get notified.
On the the foxes that drive better than another. Let me tell you my coupe with the tko 456 gear with a spool is painful to drive lol not painful obviously but it turns like a dump truck 🤣
Check out Richard Holdener channel. The most important thing is to step back and plan your build and have a good blue print for the build and then research to match the parts or future parts you intend to use. When you build the engine as system to work together then you get more for less. I built a 351 Windsor and accidentally got it right thanks to a great machine shop. I had no idea what I was doing. They helped me match the cam and intake and 4 barrel carb size to the 356 cubic inch size of the block for the rpm range and gears of rear end to make a solid street car with pump gas. Worked out great. The car was a blast to drive and I could go anywhere with it. It wasn't the fastest at the track but it was quick enough you still had to give respect and keep your head in the race.
I’m glad you did this video I’m doing a 347 build and I’m up in the air on super charger or turbo
Nice bro! I would love to see track time on both cars.
Having had both centrifugal SC and turbo on the same engine and I would take the turbo, every damn time. The sound of SC setup is definitely better, but the power delivery of the turbo is intoxicating.
The turbo muffles the v8 growl so personally i prefer the blower set up.
Thanks for the info. I have that same intake on my 89 as you have on the Red Stang and was wondering for years what it was called and what company made it.
Hey zack I have a 89 with 5.0 ho . I want some good street legal speed can u help me with some ideas
Love the wheels! Gotta keep the drag set up with ya tho. Cuz you know it's gonna be a brew2l and Jason battle at Ford take over. And we can't forget Dan with regular guy garage and his flyin 331
Turbo lag and boost can be controlled several ways exhaust housing size hot side size and design timing gear boost controller ect awesome cars !
Fox body has always been the one car that to me looks incredible without being lowered to the ground. Just fill the fender gap and it’s perfect
Awesome video. Great usable information.
Subscribed!
Thank you and welcome aboard ✊
Cool video, cool cars! Unfair comparison. Compare any car w/ same max HP number and the supercharged one will win. More power under the curve. Supercharges do cost quite a bit more to buy, if you can fab turbo is the way to go. Want to drive & win races vs same HP cars, pony up the cash.
Both are Badass and this Saleen wheels look awesome
Ya I have a 90 notch with a built 351w it's an NA car at the Moment , I had street tires on it couldn't hook for shit, thru some Mickey Thompson Radials on made a world of differene..but we are definitely wanna add a power adder. I'm liking the turbo set up so far
Two awesome fun and unique foxes. Exciting to see what you do with the new fox. EcoBoost twin turbo 4 cylinder? hehe
For some reason I just really like turbo cars. Though I will admit that it is much more complicated, turbos are cheaper, make more power, and are much easier to adjust. I have a few different tunes and I can go from 270 whp up to 590 whp with the push of a button. I know you can adjust a supercharged car but it is just not as simple. I can set my boost to cut out anywhere from 5 psi up to 25 psi. I also feel like the turbo is easier to get good launches with.
You should make the red super charged car moter 347 stroker so both ur turbo and supercharger car have the same diameter engine would be a good challenge if both car have the same size engine
Those are both beautiful fox bodys! Enjoyed the video!
5 psi on the turbo? You said you may run a bigger turbo for more power. How about 10psi ot 15psi before you swap to a bigger turbo?
awesome video. liked and subbed! One question just curious why you can't hear the whine of the supercharger on the red fox body?
Turbos on foxes gives you the extra push high end seen a supercharged fox and turbo fox race completely stock and the turbo fox pulled just at the end I would love to own a supercharged one just for that perfect exhaust note
Thanks B for the video!
I’d be interested in letting you drive my car and comparing it to Calypso.
That would be fun 🤩
@@BREW2LFOXBODY I think they’re more apples to apples.
