  • The funeral has taken place of a soldier described as an"exceptional Rifles officer."
Lieutenant Andrew Chesterman 3rd Battalion The Rifles was shot by insurgents in Afghanistan three weeks ago.
He had been commanding a vehicle patrol in the Nad 'Ali district of Helmand province when the lead vehicle struck an IED.
As he moved forward to take control of the situation the patrol was engaged by insurgent small arms fire and Lieutenant Chesterman was shot.
Despite the best efforts of his fellow Riflemen at the scene, the Medical Emergency Response Team and the staff at the Bastion Hospital, Lieutenant Chesterman could not be saved.
His funeral took place today at Bristol Cathedral.

An accomplished young officer , physically fit and intellectually sharp, Lt Chesterman always led from the front putting the safety of his men above everything else. It is clear that he would have gone much further in his career in the Army if his live had not been cut short in such tragic circumstances. He now joins the hall of Riflemen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their Sovereign and country. He will be remembered.
