It is also very much your job to know what your kid is going through, if she/he is happy & well-adjusted, and if not to get your child some help---and that doesn't include changing him/her to another schoolwhen the child can't make friends anyway. I am certain that Colt knew right from wrong, knew how he was supposed to treat people---that part is easy. The hard part is the communicaton & being aware of your child's issues & NOT being in denial b/c it looks good on you. That's the hard part.

@@vintagelady1 Although sometimes it's difficult to get teenagers to get the help that you know they need. My daughter was dealing with some issues in which she was acting out at school. I believed it was the result of past trauma and grief over a close relative passing away. I made all these appointments with a psychologist who then referred her for CBT. The referral took months. Once my daughter actually spoke with the therapist, after only a couple of sessions, they said they could not continue the therapy because she was not willing to participate. I wanted to force her to do it but the therapist explained that therapy is not as effective unless the individual wants to participate and there are other people waiting to receive services who are willing to participate. I ended up switching my daughter's school and actually a lot of the issues resolved.

Y'all are focused so much on the father and not the fact that in Georgia, there is no minimum age limit for a child possessing a rifle or shotgun. The only thing they can't have are handguns. They can't buy guns themselves, but a parent can legally give them one. There is also no "red flag" law in Georgia that would have barred this possession once Colt had been on record as making threats. The father bought that rifle for Colt because it was perfectly legal to do so. THIS is the REAL problem. And the Republicans know this, which is why they're placing sole blame on the father, to distract y'all from demanding more sane and sensible gun laws.

There's a fixation in American men of their sons assuming the passage to "manhood" regardless of how ready, or well prepared, they are. When a nation gives hundreds of thousands an M16 for military campaigns from the age of 18, a national mythology exists around "boyhood to man as warrior/protector". That's how it occurs. Men don't talk deeply or think critically, they instruct and bestow trust - then hope it's deserved and respected.
