I was literally looking at the Eos R on FB marketplace and switched over to RUclips and your video is at the top of my feed! 👀 I am still using an 80D but have had my eye on the R.
No sensor stabilization, pretty low frames per second and the auto focus isn’t the next Gen super AF if you will starting with the R5 and R6. The R was largely a failure for canon. It was heavily criticized for no dual card slots, so sensor stabilization etc.. stuff that Sony had perfected years earlier. The R5 and R6 was Canon as oops you were right we messed up but these are everything you need and so much more. Granted for video the R5 was largely criticized for it overheating in 8k and weird thermostat shutoff in the early firmware versions. But for stills the R5 and R6 were light years ahead of the other guys.
I made this exact upgrade for work because I wanted full frame, absolutely zero regrets. Loved that camera until I upgraded to the r5, but thinking of getting another R as my backup
I'm in this exact boat. 80D for several years and looking to upgrade, mainly I want 4k video and eye auto focus, but full frame is a nice bonus. I was looking at a 90D but to jump to mirrorless and full frame for just a few hundred dollars more is really attractive. Any of you guys adapt your EF lenses to the R?
The EOS R basically is still a very good and capable camera till this very day. Being the same as the 5D mark 4, it’s just a mirror less camera with a smaller body design. Thanks to its 30 megapixel sensor, commercial photography work and print ads is just great together with Canon’s color science. And addition to its auto focus tracking, fashion photography could never been any easier. Having the EOS R6 together with me, the EOS R had always been my work horse camera till this very day for all my professional photography works.
I bought one in 2021, and its best feature is that it was several 100 pounds cheaper than when it was first introduced. Add to that a trade-in price on my 6D Mk2 and the upgrade becomes a no-brainer. It's essentially a mirrorless 5DMk4. I absolutely love the Auto-Tracking Face/Eye AF system. I'm only an occasional video shooter, and whilst I think the video features are good, I think a lot of reviewers lose sight of the fact that DSLR/Mirrorless cameras are stills cameras first and video second. As a stills photographer's camera it's still top of the tree.
The only thing is the 5D IV had better image quality than the EOS-R (at least for photos). I owned both for many years, and the 5D IV files were very low noise and I could push and pull them as much as I wanted with no issues. The EOS R has slightly less dynamic range, slightly more noise at higher ISOs (about 1/2 stop more) but the files fell apart for me if I did my normal amount of pushing and pulling. The sensor may have been similar, but the on sensor AF seemed to have caused a fair bit extra noise and pattern noise (I call it banding, others do not) that the 5D IV never had. The AF and video were better on the R for sure, but ultimately the IQ on the R let me down so I sold it.
For that price, one of my favourite cameras. I'm using it since 2019 and still loving it. Of course rolling shutter and no 4K full sensor readout can be sometimes annoying but I'm also using the crop as an advantage. Photos look insane and I think, dosn't matter if you shoot video or take photos, Rf glasses are a joy for using on this Camera system. If I'm honest, I love using this camera every time, but waiting for an R6 or R5 mk2 and will upgrade. For now I'm satisfied with my R. Thank you for your great video!
For the talking head portion, it's filmed on a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART, which is my favorite lens of all time (link in description 😉). Most of the vlogging and wide shots are on a Canon 16-35mm f/4.
Canon EOS R is an underdog. Has a few cons but the camera is a solid beast. Has been doing amazing for all my professional gigs for Events, Wedding, and concerts. I don't think we will get a affordable Canon Mirrorless full frame like this ever again. Shooting video in 1080 is amazing on this camera and just upscale to 4k and RUclips and most viewers are none the wiser.
I’ve had the R for 2 years and use it today as a 2nd cam to my R5. The photo image quality from the R is excellent and for 90% of my work, the difference between images from it and the R5 is negligible. In low light or when I need faster, continuous shooting rates, I will grab the R5. The 1080p video straight from the R camera has a wonderful look to it - that sensor is just super pleasing. Yes, the Touch Bar can be a pain when it engages accidentally - but you can set it to activate after an extended push of the bar which I personally have found improves its utility. Can’t go wrong with the R
The big issue I had with the R is that the image files were fragile. Pushing and pulling would end up with pattern noise in the shadows, and more noise in general, compared to the 5D IV (which had no pattern noise at all). The R5 seems to have fixed that issue but for $5500 cdn, it should. Great camera, nearly perfect imho, but so expensive (so jealous of americans who only pay $3500 for the R5. we pay that much for the R6 in Canada).
I’ve been looking at the EOS R for a while now. I currently use the m50. I do mostly video. No high end stuff. Some social media for folks and RUclips for myself as well as personal stuff. I like the R for weather sealing, on screen audio view, better in low light, headphone jack and Custom buttons for video and Photo. Is it pretty easy to go from video to photo? Great video by the way!!
R is going for $1599 on Sale right now... and you can ALSO get an R7 for sports / wildlife AND pay LESS than the R5! Having owned the R5 for a year now, I just do not think it's worth the $3900 price tag, and it's "debatable" for low light like Astro work, if one really wants 45mp/higher pixel density to deal with. Personally - I'd take the savings and put that towards some prime lenses that let in more light. R5 is the way to go however, if you're doing PAID work: Weddings (god help you! hahaha), indoor events, and sports where you can actually fill the frame... For video work - I'd just buy a dedicated camera meant for video from day one.
I’m the guy this camera was made for. I have a stack of EF lenses, a Blackmagic for video and want to upgrade from the 5D Mark II. It ticks every box. More modern shooting style, sensor size upgrade and forward and backwards (including EFS) lens compatibility.
i love my EOS R, i dont even touch my BMPCC4k anymore if not absolutely necessary. I dont even see a point of upgrading the EOS R, to what r6, r5... no. An upgrade would be an r3 but thats out of the pricerange right now. EOS R + Meike VND adapter + 70-200 2.8 IS II L = as good as it gets for that price.
I have the R6 but I am looking at getting an EOS R secondhand as a b cam. I find it strange that the R still sells for DKK 13000 in Denmark and $2100 in Canada. It has held up in value quite well.
It's a banger camera... - both photo & video... & I regularly use an Atomos Ninja so I get the full 4k 10bit 422 C-log - For the money, I dont know it can be beat... If you don't already own it, maybe look into some of the newer R cameras. But I LOVE mine, and don't feel I "need" to upgrade at all.
There are times when it's annoying, BUT there are times when it's actually helpful and very few people bring up the fact that sometimes it's nice to have a bit more reach 🙂
Nice video as always ... I finally was able to buy the Canon EOS R (Took Me 3+ yrs to save up for it) Now I need to save up for the Lens lol... I am way behind.. Keep up the good work ..
Been with the R since May of last year. I have found that the eye tracking works fairly well on large birds that are not overly active or smaller birds that are relatively close and that do not flitter around too much. Also really like the smallish body for my smaller than average hands. Then there is that 30 Megapixel sensor which is substantially larger than sensor on the more expensive R6. Since I often produce large prints, up to 13x19 with my own printer and even larger formats sent off to the print shop, the larger the original file, the better. As some have recommended, I put all my money into the glass rather than the body as in- the RF 100-500 L IS USM, 24-105 f/4 L IS USM, RF 14-35 L, RF 100mm Macro L, and the fun little 35mm 1.8 STM lens. I will eventually upgrade to the R5 or maybe even the much rumored R1 should it ever become a reality As for the R3, gonna pass on that overpriced option with a sensor that is not even as large as the sensor on the R!
Is it better than the 90D? Also you said there are better options. Whats something GREAT similar to this in 2022 around the same PRICE RANGE🖤 THANK YOU
Hi Josh ! I’m new to the video making game and am looking to get an EOS R, at frame @4:50 in this video is this Badger Mountain in Richland Wa?! I only ask because I live in tri-cities!
I plan to do real estate photography with the camera and I'm currently saving up for it. it was either this or the a7iii from Sony but I think the Canon edges it out just a little bit for my personal preferences. If you could provide any insight or opinions about using it for my use case it would be greatly appreciated.
it feels solid, i am waiting a long term usage review for new R7 and R10 to see if i needed a crop sensor camera. or maybe an upgraded EOS R with affordable price (not R5 or R6.
Dude! Loving the vids I actually looked up is buying a EOS R in 2022 a good option and your video came right up! keep it up man, you earned the R5….get it! Don’t think about it😂
Anyone saying that it's a disappointment. We ran the core of our business on two of these humble cameras. The FF sensor of a 5Div with eye AF and 10bit 4K video output paired with a Ninja meant I could easily handle both. I got the R5c this year and honestly it's not THAT much better. Plus overtime my own skills, technique and experience improved that I need less of the camera to compensate.
I just made payment for this camera and it's coming in in two days time. My body is shaking out of exciting. I had to sell my 5D mark III and 80D and added some extra cash for it.
Nope, not yet and pretty much not expected at all but it has some sort of useful and capable "animal" detection when using object detection and tracking, even stick on the faces/heads of animals depending on their color/look. If you want to use this camera mainly for any sort of animals, just buy the R7 or R8/"RP Mk2" at least, the R is a pretty NoGo in 2023 already
I believe you can organize videos in Adobe Lightroom Classic, but it isn't meant for editing videos. I edit videos primarily in Adobe Premiere Pro. If you don't want to pay for the subscription, Davinci Resolve is another fantastic program that has a free version that might be worth looking into.
My eos R is constantly going out of focus when filming myself, even with the face detection + eye tracking on. I find half my clips are out of focus and unusable. Anyone else have this issue?
I've been looking at getting a canon eos rp with a 24-240mm usm lens for landscape and travel and street photography do you think this is a good combo for what I would use it for? I have been using a Panasonic Lumix FZ80
If you're looking for a do-everything setup, that'll work pretty well. There are better lenses out there for low light, but if you need a setup that'll do a little bit of everything and you don't want to swap lenses that's a great place to start!
Really great footage and advice - you obviously know how to get the most from your gear. I just bought a refurbished EOS R from Canon when the price dipped to $1300 - absolutely no regrets - I mainly bought it as a gimbal cam and B cam to my C100 M2 and it's perfect for my needs. Really good AF, solid image quality in both still and video, and good menu system. No brainer at this price.
HELP!!! Why did my 18x24 picture come out super ugly? I shot with my EOS R sitting on an rf 70-200 2.8 L IS USM. I shoot RAW. On my settings once I click on RAW the page that opens I have RAW circled and at the bottom under JPEG I have the dash line - circled. I sent the picture via Bluetooth to my cell phone and then to LR to edit, back to my pictures and then I placed the order. Do you all think my cell phone is the problem?
I just want to take great photos I really do love this camera I’m planning to upgrade from my canon 80 D has died so now I’m planning to upgrade to the canon EOS R and thank God it has USB-C data transfer
Hey Josh, really great content man! I just got a R body myself too as a backup cam and it still felt very premium. However, what I noticed was that despite not having any IBIS, the R body had abit of very very light rattling sound when shaken by hand. I don't know if this has something to do with me bumping it into the wooden door the other day but the bump was not even strong with an impact distance of like ~7-8cm and a light amount of swing force, which should not actually cause any internal damage as these gears are built to withstand certain level of impact. So I m just wondering if that light rattle is originally there caused by certain small moving parts inside the cam. If u have the R with u, would u be able to check if u have the same case as mine? Thank u very much man!
as i was watching i was saying, wheres the canon cripple hammer, then it came, 4k 1.7x crop. thats a deal breaker, but at least its got autofocus in 4k
I got my Panasonic G85 in 2018 cuz of how affordable it was, how compact it was, and the top-tier IBIS. Though, Lately, I've been thinking about leaving #MicroFourThirdsGang to get a Sony a7iv. All the features are what I'm looking for and the image quality and autofocus is pretty great! The stuff you shoot seems great, tho! So, I think you're def making the best of the EOS R!
Panasonic has a lot of great cameras! I've been looking at the Sony A7IV but the crop in 4k 60 is a bummer for me, otherwise it'd be PERFECT. I still might get one though we'll see 😉
I have a G85 and looking for a full frame. Have you thought about this camera in the video for photography ? I want to move away from micro thirds for portrait photography now
Good day Josh. I'm a 90D user but the photos don't look attractive because I guess it's because of the apsc sensor. Now I want to buy this camera to beautify my photos by switching to full frame camera. What would you recommend me?
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve been looking for a different canon cameras and this one got my attention, it’s been over three months thinking if I should have this camera and know thanks to this video and to you, I’ve made my choice, this camera will be mine😍 I have a canon t6 and it’s been with me since 2016 and know it’s time for an upgrade.
I think this is a great camera for starting out on RUclips, it can do everything you need! As for what type, I'd start out just experimenting with any topics that interest you and go from there.
I tried real hard to like this camera, but ended up selling it, & went back to my sony a7iii & canon 5d mk iv, the ergonomics on the r where very disappointing.
For me I don't see any reason that pushs me to buy a canon, Sony has been way ahead in every way possible and can get a far better camera from Sony for the same price
This camera is NOT recommended for fast action or wildlife photography! It's 8 PFS shooting rate is way too slow! Even a DSLR crop sensor like the Canon 90D with an 11FPS frame rate will produce much better results!
I was literally looking at the Eos R on FB marketplace and switched over to RUclips and your video is at the top of my feed! 👀 I am still using an 80D but have had my eye on the R.

That’s everyone’s gripe with the EOS r…the Touch Bar is/can be annoying. Also the crop in video…Great camera otherwise.
Yes, I bought mine from Canon USA refurbished and comes with the standard warranty. No trouble here.

Agreed
What camera and lens was this video shot on? Thank you.
Most of the video was shot on a Canon EOS R and a Sigma 35mm f/1.4. All the gear I use is linked in the description of my videos :)

@@JoshWiniarski thank you for your advice. I’ll try them out. I’m paying for the monthly subscription for Lightroom mobile at the moment. 😁
Good stuff. Thanks for the review. 👍👍
This video was super helpful, thank you so much.
Professionally, you love saying the truth. You are already blessed 🎥🎬🌺💐🌹
My eos R is constantly going out of focus when filming myself, even with the face detection + eye tracking on. I find half my clips are out of focus and unusable. Anyone else have this issue?
Thank you, The features you mentioned are what I’m looking for you nailed it. May you pls suggest what’s the best canon eos r type should I get now?
I've been looking at getting a canon eos rp with a 24-240mm usm lens for landscape and travel and street photography do you think this is a good combo for what I would use it for? I have been using a Panasonic Lumix FZ80
If you're looking for a do-everything setup, that'll work pretty well. There are better lenses out there for low light, but if you need a setup that'll do a little bit of everything and you don't want to swap lenses that's a great place to start!
Honestly, this was extremely helpful!!! Thank you thank you
Really great footage and advice - you obviously know how to get the most from your gear.
Wat do u use to colour grade
Adobe Premiere Pro
I just want to take great photos I really do love this camera I’m planning to upgrade from my canon 80 D has died so now I’m planning to upgrade to the canon EOS R and thank God it has USB-C data transfer
Hummm .....Great Question...but I would defiantly save to get the R5 or R6. Since I got the R6, we good! XD Awesome work Josh.
Thank u very much man!
i just buy a7iv 🥰 and i love it. . got many lens that i can buy for chep. . cankn eos R lens still hard to get cheap price 😭
The a7iv looks like an awesome camera, I hope you make some awesome stuff with it!
as i was watching i was saying, wheres the canon cripple hammer, then it came, 4k 1.7x crop. thats a deal breaker, but at least its got autofocus in 4k
Yeah the 1.7x crop is a bummer.
This is such a first world thing to be switching cameras often to latest versions. I know people who still use 2008 DSLRs
subscribed 😍
Thanks for the support!
If I was able to afford it, YES I would buy it :)
Yesterday you commented on my laptop commercial ad video ❤🌸 today I am commenting on your ❤🎥 1st comment
Happy to help, hope you make some awesome stuff if you end up getting it 😁
I want to start a RUclips Channel do think I should use it and also what type
I think this is a great camera for starting out on RUclips, it can do everything you need! As for what type, I'd start out just experimenting with any topics that interest you and go from there.
@@JoshWiniarski Which RF
Can it Shoot 4K in Apeature Mode?
What's a better option than this beast?!?!
I tried real hard to like this camera, but ended up selling it, & went back to my sony a7iii & canon 5d mk iv, the ergonomics on the r where very disappointing.
They're s9 much better than the a7iii
excellent
For me I don't see any reason that pushs me to buy a canon, Sony has been way ahead in every way possible and can get a far better camera from Sony for the same price
$899 refurbished from Canon! And with a free battery grip
That's a PHENOMENAL deal! I bought mine used around 2 years ago and paid significantly more than that.
Me. Looks real bad quality
My wifi. 360p
Me. Oooooohhhh
nice job
Thanks!
It’s bloody expensive
This camera is NOT recommended for fast action or wildlife photography! It's 8 PFS shooting rate is way too slow! Even a DSLR crop sensor like the Canon 90D with an 11FPS frame rate will produce much better results!
No.
Terrible design on that multi-function bar.
