Pictures at an Exhibition: Concert Conversation, 8 Feb 2020, Gabriella Smith and Carlos Kalmar

All Classical Morning Host Brandi Parisi interviews composer Gabriella Smith and Oregon Symphony Music Director, Carlos Kalmar about Ms. Smith's composition, Bioluminescence Chaconne, first piece on tonight's program. It is an entirely enticing discussion with the composer describing her affinity for underwater sensations such as fish and shrimp sounds, and diving among bioluminescent plankton, set to music.
They then discuss another female composer's contribution to tonight's program, Missy Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition as orchestrated by Ravel, and the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major, along with special insights into the character Paganini.
This is all followed by a brief discussion of the Oregon Symphony's 2020-2021 season, Carlos Kalmar's last with OSO, and one to be eagerly anticipated for its monumental content, ending with Mahler 9.
