    2011, Curse should be at least 5. Hashim Amla was batting the best he ever did. If you look at his dismissal in the game, Amla plays the ball with soft hands and it hits the wicket-keeper's (McCullum then) shoe and bounces very high in the air for the slip to take it. To me, that was the moment RSA lost that game.
    Also, the 2015 one should have more points for choke. Simply because of their fielding in the game.

    Losing from 30 of 30 was nothing short of a tragedy.
    If South Africa had played smartly maybe sent Rabada up the order to hit a few boundaries it would have released some pressure. How can you go from 30 of 30 to 16 off 6.

  • @neeravnaik
    @neeravnaik 17 дней назад +2

    1999 and 2024 would also be top because they had like the best or second best team and they lost to the best team which won the cup. Many other cups they were ok and had shock losses from much lesser teams. But if you look at the whole 2024 campaign they were very close to doing that too. Could have lost to Nepal, Ban, Ned and maybe even US due to their lack of depth which ultimately hurt them in the end. So the style factor or the flawed approach is the biggest reason for their run. It was slow tentative batting of earlier era and now it is lack of depth in batting. Given that we have so many world cups now curse and pressure is going to reduce and if they correct it they will eventually win it. Get in some all rounders even flawed ones and then make a strong run again with Klassen and Miller at peak.

    Can remember series such as Titan cup, CUB series in 1997, 1999 mini World Cup, 2002 champions trophy. As an SA fan we are used to these shocks. A score like 33/5 and seeing Boucher and Pollock batting before 10th over also a common thing. They make weaker bowlers of opponent teams like demons. They hadn’t had a match winner until AbDe..

  • @ks20234
    @ks20234 18 дней назад +1

    Simply put the Style eventually causes the Choke.
    And there are some common things in the style across the different instances
    1. Slow, defensive batting
    2. Imbalance in team combination
    3. Wrong decision making in terms of bowling changes, maybe fielding placements etc
    All these points to over-thinking, fear of failure, negative mindset, not trusting their own talent and skills. That's why they perform in other games but in knockout they don't.
    They become over-anxious to perform and that is their undoing.. India has the same problem with finals which hopefully with this win has gone away.

    • @shahezahmed9960
      @shahezahmed9960 18 дней назад +1

      I feel they need to get someone like Ricky pointing who can change their mindset when they are under pressure how to perform cuz they need to get somebody who has the experience of playing a final and knockout medicine how to perform in that to your potential maybe they have the potential but they play timidly when it comes to knock out like you said fear of failure that should be taken out. I lost the innings of Ricky pointing the other day of 2003 finals
      Man what hitting he was playing Indian bowlers like club cricketers smashing them all around the ground.
      You literally need to boss the game from the beginning itself when crucial moments and never let the opposition get the better of you that's how you win the championships.
      In 2024 finals South Africa made blunders they send Maharaj ahead of rabada
      If rabada came and hit few boundaries do that is the pressure. They knew they had a shadow batting lineup Maharaj made 2 off 7. That's where they lost the game due to tactical error.
      You can have shallow batting lineup yet you can make the best utilization if you know the way to get around it.
      Imagine it was Australia who was in the situation of South Africa
      Would it be making sense to send Mitchell Starc when you need 26 off 24 or will you send the zampa or Hazelwood.
      Rabada is like your shaheen shah Afridi you give him the license to come and hit few sixes and boundaries just to ease the pressure so the match situation gets in your favor.

      World cups are tragedies for South Africa. They need to come out of the state like they need to get someone like Ricky pointing who knows how to win in these crucial moments.
      Makram is the best captain they have who has the experience of winning under 19 world cup.
      Imagine if South Africa had lost against Australia in the finals instead of India. They would have literally broken down. Like New Zealand South Africa also has mental breakdown against Australia in the knockout matches.
      Losing against India might have somehow mellowed down a bit.
      If losing a final against Australia from that position would have literally crushed them.

    South Africa's defeat of 2024 finals didnt happen due to any unnatural causes. It was simply due to South Africa's limited batting resources. They had 30 balls , even after Klaasen got out, due to that "diversion", every world class squad has batting resources till no7. I didnt even see even a single allrounder, David Miller was the last leg South Africa was standing on. SA's bowlers simply, cannot bat. They have no batting experience after Klaasen or Miller. This is the biggest reason why South Africa lost. South Africa had 24 balls to make 26 runs after Klaasen's dismissal and no reason can grant South Africa any excuse of not doing that and denying the professionalism of Indian bowlers.

    More or less agree with this random ranking. I was too young to understand what the hell happened in 1992 though I felt sad for that team. I don't remember much of 1996 except they looked clueless once Lara was up and running. In 1999, I damn near lost my mind in those last 2 overs - every ball was packed with drama. To this day, I do not understand why Donald and Klusener didn't have a chat after that first near runout from Lehman. Even though I am an Aussie supporter when SL isn't playing, I would have completely okay with that SA team winning the WC. That haunts me, and I am not even a SA supporter. Cannot imagine what SA fans who lived through that were going through. 2003, I was sure they were going to win because SL wasn't having a great WC at all - we barely scraped through and everyone, including Murali and Mahela and Sanath, were struggling. You can almost excuse the loss but to think one team has been bitten by math twice in WCs over the course of a decade? If that's not a curse, I don't know what is.

    I am not too convinced with the definition and parameters for the choke. One does not always have to be ahead of the game to choke. They could choke within the first innings. Catches can be dropped earlier as well. And it would be very interesting to see if the “style” of play changed for the important matches, then that should be considered a choke as well. For example India losing the ODI world cup, they choked right in the beginning. In the wtc final against Australia, they choked in the first innings. They were never in the game after that.

  • @kanakTheGold

    Without having any metrics, it is 2024. Why? It was the very first FINALS for SA - They went only as far as SF in all previous editions, even the 1999/2015 ones. And in 2024, you were SUPPOSED TO WIN in the LAST 30 minutes. And exactly lost there. It should be the nearest and yet the farthest, SA were ever to winning an ICC Trophy. You should have also added the ICC knockout 2000 SF to this list, which they lost against India (again), just after Gibbs scored a big hundred and they were like 192-2 needing a run a ball 60. So, in summary, Choke and Style in that order- are the major reasons why SA haven't yet won a major ICC trophy though they had such good chances (The only tournament they won was the inaugural ICC knockout trophy in 1998).

Also Hero Cup 93 Semifinal choke, Titan Cup 97 Final, CuB triseries in Australia 97/98 i think come into my mind as non- World cup chokes. Any thing else in ODIs or Test matches??

    • @mohitk05

      Even 2002 CT Semifinal vs India, where they were coasting and Gibbs was smashing Indian bowling all over. Even 2000 CT Semifinal choke vs India where Ganguly scored 100. Come to think of it, South Africa has choked the maximum vs India in Semifinals and Finals in WC, CT and Tri nation tournaments.

    South Africa needs more all rounders in their current batting lineup because Jansen is a poor batter at number 7 . The South African domestic structure needs to start developing more allrounders. South Africa does not produce quality batters like Kohli , Warner, Buttler etc . Even in the 1990s, they did not have players like Mark Waugh , Saeed Anwar and Aravinda de Silva . Hence, they started creating allrounders and thus , in the 1990s they had great success in the ODI team because of allrounders like McMillan, Pollock, Klusener, Kallis, Crookes, Symcox and Cronje .
    They need to start developing more allrounders .
