Basically a distinction needs to be made between the Highveld grounds (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Centurion, Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom, and Benoni), versus the coastal grounds (Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, East London, and Paarl). What is an interesting pattern is that the CSA prefers to organize more Highveld matches than coastal matches when it comes to Asian teams. And the opposite is done when Australia, New Zealand, and England tour South Africa. Highveld fast bowling can be considered to be a separate sport such as basketball, volleyball, rowing, where height of the sportsperson is of so much advantage. Hence, CSA is careful to load the dice against touring Asian teams while making sure that Aus/NZ/Eng don't utilize the same against them. The zenith of this sort of cunning scheduling was the Australia tour of 2018, when it was 3 coastal venues and just one Highveld venue in a 4-match series. That was also the sandpaper series when the Aussies succumbed to a collective brain fade. On the 2010-11 India tour to SA, India got two coastal venues (Durban & Cape Town) + one Highveld venue (Centurion) and were able to draw the series 1-1. In 2013, it was a 2-test series where India got one Highveld venue (Jo'burg) and one coastal venue (Durban). They managed to draw in the Highveld but lost at the coastal one. In the previous 2 tours (2018 & 2021-22), CSA preferred a 2-1 ratio favoring Highveld venues over coastal for India. Pakistan were hosted similarly in 2013 and 2018-19 in 3-test series. Sri Lanka who have shorter fast bowlers than both India and Pakistan buck this trend. They were given 2-1 ratios favoring coastal venues in both 2011-12 and 2016-17. CSA then got complacent and gave SL 2 coastal venues in 2019. This resulted in a stunning 2-0 defeat of South Africa at home and SL made the record books being the only Asian team to win a test series in South Africa. The vengeful CSA then gave SL 2 Highveld venues in 2020-21 in a follow-up 2-test series and this time around SL couldn't replicate the magic losing 0-2. Bangladesh were rolled over 0-2 in two Highveld venues in 2017 (2-test series). Since it was such a one-sided affair, CSA then gave Bangladesh two coastal venues in 2022 in another 2-test series. This time South Africa managed to use spin to win 2-0. The overall summary is that India are the only Asian team to beat South Africa in Highveld venues. They achieved this three times: twice in Johannesburg (2006, 2018) and once in Centurion (2021). This is 3 out of 4 victories that India have achieved in SA. Pakistan's two wins came in coastal venues in Durban (1998) and Port Elizabeth (2007). Similarly, SL's 3 wins again came in coastal venues: twice in Durban (2012, 2019), once in Port Elizabeth (2019).
Unpopular opinion: 2011 was the best chance to win a test series in SA for India. They lost the first test poorly and made a great comeback in the second test.In the third test,India had to chase down 340 runs with 10 wickets remaining on the final day.Ofcourse, chasing 340 on the final day is difficult, so was Gabba 2021.Sometimes the risk is worth it.They didn't even try, they started playing for a draw from the morning session itself. If they tried to win first and things started going downhill, then they could have played for a draw.
There are several reasons for it, some can be summarised as 1) Shorter no. of games: Apart from 1992 , all the series ranged from 2-3 games, hence chances for comeback are minimum once a test is lost, compare it to Australia and England where an average of 4-5 tests are played, if a game is lost chances are more of making a comeback drops drastically. 2) Under performance of bowlers: Although the pace battery is performing well, but the main weapons of Indian bowling attack are the spinners who under many occasions have provided important breakthroughs in England and Australia, but the South African tracks are docile for them. The tests we won in South Africa so far are due to the individual brilliance of S.Sreesanth and Mohammad Shami, as a bowling unit India have failed miserably, specially in the last tour when they failed to defend totals above 200. 3) Sub standard batting performance: It is true that the South African pitches are difficult terrain for the batters, but still India apart from 2010-2011 has always struggled in batting, specially in the longer format , the test matches won so far in South Africa are mainly due to superb bowling performances where batting only played a secondary role. 4) Mentality of players: Indian cricket team's body language appeared to be pessimistic in South Africa, unless you are not aggressive enough, South Africa shall remain as an El Dorado as per your victory is concerned.
@@TheGeorgeousCricket SA obviously.. They're the ones responsible for hosting series..Between 2023 and 2026, Cricket SA decided to play two Test series both as a consequence of cost cutting..hosting Test matches is loss-making...
South Africa wouldn't risk playing India at current day Durban so we'll never see how good Ashwin would do there (the same ground that South Africa rolled Bangladesh for 53 in the 4th innings with spinners taking all the wickets).
BCCI would be my guess, or BBCI and ICC saying there isnt enough coin for more than 3. Comes to ICC 3 countries have sway on how it's run Australia, England and India as they have the largest income from matches. Of those 3 BCCI has more as look at the names of those on the ICC board@@TheGeorgeous
@@johnnywilson3071 they also avoid Gqeberha (a.k.a Port Elizabeth) when India tours South Africa. In 2018, the Otis Gibson theory was to avoid coastal venues when Asian teams tour, but to use coastal venues when England/Australia tour. This was what lead to the sandpaper gate, when the Aussies were denied a test at Centurion.

Now in this present Indian test squad there is no fast bowler who can break the back of South African batting, Bumrah, Siraj may be better but they lack the ability of scything through the batting order which only Shami is capable of, Prasidh Krishna is good for t-20 s and Shardul Thakur is not in good form, should have tried with Arshdeep Singh perhaps a variation in bowling and the ability to mop up the tail would have been an asset. Why they went without the likes of Pujara, Rahane,Hanuma Vihari? Why is Karun Nair out of the squad? The squad selected simply reflects the incompetence of BCCI.
@@sayantanghatak24shami is an ordinary overseas bowler. 1-2 brilliant performances don't make him a great. Bumrah is miles ahead but that's the problem. India only have 1 world class pacer - Bumrah. I'm taking nothing away from the Indian team, but they could only defeat Aus because of the huge difference in the 2 batting lineups and lots of dropped catches by Australian fielders. Aussies over rely on their bowling quartet and missed opportunities meant they were losing. Same story for this year's Ashes as well, were 2-0 up but the volume of dropped catches prevented them from winning an away Ashes series for the first time in the last 22 years.
Yep and their fielding in the World Cup Final was an integral part of the win, Who was it that said Australia saved at least 30 runs in the field? Shastri?@@AAAAAA-gj2di
Rohit Sharma is a very passive captain in Test cricket like Dhoni. We need a tactically astute and proactive captain. Even Rahul Dravid has failed miserably to provide tactical inputs to our team.. Look at Pat Cummins, how he sets the fields for different batsmen of opposition. The way he trapped Shreyas Iyer in CWC'23 final is a brilliant example of his tactical supremacy over others.
This whole idea that Kohli was "aggressive" because he pumped his fists at every opportunity and Dhoni was a passive test captain is such crap. Under Dhoni's captaincy, India won a test series in NZ and drew a test series in South Africa. Two mammoth achievements. Along with that Dhoni won the test mace and 3 ICC trophies. Kohli's only notable achievement as captain? Winning vs Australia in Australia in 2018 when there was no Warner or Smith lol.
@@shahzadirani Dhoni was an absolute joke of a captain in the Test format. He was always clueless in away Test series and unable to groom fast bowlers under his captaincy. Ishant Sharma's career almost came to an end during his captaincy until he found a resurgence under the Kohli-Shastri era. After the 2011 WC victory, the Indian team under Dhoni went into one of its darkest ages, losing away series to England and Australia by 4-0. Yes, 4-0. They didn't even draw a match or try to win one but were completely outplayed. Criticism for Dhoni was kept in balance because of WC 2011 and CT 2013 victories. Ultimately, he retired from Test cricket at the age of 33, at the height of extreme humiliation, not even bothering to complete 100 matches in red-ball cricket.
@@shahzadirani Shastri Kohli duo changed the team. The Indian team needed that fitness and cultural change that they brought, a very important time. Helped the team by instilling more courage, which was visibly translating into performance overseas in Tests and just the body language was something Indian fans never witnessed. Naysayers like you will comment about the lack of any ICC trophies.
TBH I have no idea how they didn't beat us this time around. Going into the test series Dean was literally the only one we could count on with the bat.
From an Indian standpoint, this became obvious during last Ind-SA test series. India can neither bowl nor play scary bounce. SA can both bowl and play scary bounce. Prasidh Krishna has the height to make a difference, but he botched his chance.
If india can't play or bowl bounce, they wouldn't have won 2 test series' in Australia. South Africa has conditions that replicate English, Australian, and west indian pitches. It's difficult for any touring team. It's a lot more nuanced than just 'India can't handle bounce'
India's bowling attack is very weak this time. Indian bowlers are searching for swing rather than seam and wobble seam which Rabada is using incredibly well...
@@nazalmoideen The degree and variability of the bounce is far more extreme in South Africa. Plus their bowlers know how to exploit it. India only do well in Australia because it's a batting paradise. How can you even compare it to South Africa? There have been occasions where pitches in SA were almost declared unsafe. Aside from that, we don't have a pack of bowlers who can take advantage of the bounce. It's just Bumrah. The rest just bowl and hope to get lucky.
It's definitely not that "InDIa cAn'T plAY scArY BOuNcE" lol😂 Seasonal cricket fans are the most irritating ever. India always struggles with horizontal movement. Be it England or New Zealand. Plus South Africa presents three different challenges in each test, the 1st phase moves in 3 axes, the second phase is a batter's game and the third phase does everything combined. To win a team must do all three well. India rarely does.
Atleast indian team in previous years fought and gave their best. But this time it is an embarrassing loss. Hope they make right changes to the playing 11.

Jrod, why did you not even mention Donald's incredible 12 for 139 hall in their 1992 victory at Port Elizabeth? Bad miss. It was one of the most brutal bowling ever seen.
I feel, when a Test team tours South Africa (or any other country), their chances of success in a test series depends on a Good balance in the team and a sustained Positive mindset yearning for a win, which I feel most Indian teams touring South Africa did not fulfill. This aspect became more critical in recent years as unlike in the past, there are no preparatory matches before a test series. On a different note: It is ironic that in the 70s-90s when India did not play South Africa, both sides had some of the most gifted and diverse test players on either side.
While it may seem like a fortress, just remember England won their last two tours here, with England's 2020 team being barely average at best (Burns, Crawley, Sibley, Denly, Buttler, Bess, Curran etc). South Africa have been average for a few years now in test cricket, and India's current test team should have won the series back in 2022. I blame poor selection, persisting with the completely out of form Pujara and Rahane who had long used up all their rope by that point, while Kohli was unfortunately in the midst of his century-less slump.
England at a guess had Anderson and Broad on both occasions with seam bowlers in support of above average. Batters do not win you tests bowlers do. You need to get 20 wickets to win a match, get a million runs wont win you the match if you can only get 19 wickets.
@@savageduck4487 Anderson was injured for most of that series. While I do agree slightly with you, that only highlights how much of a missed opportunity the 2022 series was for India. That was probably the best bowling line-up they could take to South Africa, and they delivered. The batters failed to back them up and that is why they lost.
@@indranigomes9874 I think the best bowling attack India ever had in South Africa was in the 3rd test at Wanderers in 2017-18. - Bumrah - Ishant - Shami - Bhuvaneshwar - Pandya This combo could extract all 3 of swing, seam, and bounce, and unsurprisingly India won that test match.
@jarod: Have you noticed that Ashwin despite bowling economically @2.15 an over and taking a wicket has only bowled 19 overs at Centurion? This seems strange as Shardul and Prasidh went for 194 runs in 39 overs! In the past teams from Asia have used a spinner to block one end more due to lack of reliable seamers. It took many years to develop Umesh, Ishant and Shami to be consistent in SENA countries. The only exception has been Bumrah (took him just one bowling inning) and Siraj (you can see that he still needs some work). So shouldn’t India have gone with higher workload on Ashwin (35-40 overs) and rotated the new seamers (Shardul and Prasidh) in between the spells from experienced seamers?
This is why I thought our series win in South Africa in 2019/20 was really impressive. England lost the first test of that series, yet came back to win the next 3 tests and make it 3-1.
India will never win in RSA unless: 1.They plan a 5 Test series ,home and away,in the space of 4 -6 years(taking into account the already packed calendar). THis will allow ample room for rain, draws etc. 2. A dedicated Test team comprising of 16-18 players (may include a few cross-formatters like Kohli,R.Sharma) . 3. Practice Test Series(not matches) against Nambia or Zimbabwe, not less than 3 whole Tests(in the case of Namibia, these could be just 4 day games). 4. Stop experimenting with every series, every match. No team keeps blooding debutants each series, match only to drop them. A discard like Ishant Sharma or Pujara or Rahane would have been mighty useful in SENA countries.Likewise, somebody like an Unadkat would create a rough patch outside the RHB's offstump for Ashwin (somebody give that guy an entire series!!) to exploit. 5. Start resting Bumrah,Shami,Kohli,R.Sharma for non-marquee home tests(non-SENA or high intensity series) and use the likes of UT Yadav,Siraj, Iyer etc.
Its all about bowling. Nuff said. Bring a wider variety and be ruthless with the ball. Batting friendly games can go either way, but slow and dry games are always won by the best bowling team. Keep them to a low total in first innings, then abuse with bouncers and yorkers.
The reason i think india didnt win in sa previously and this year is the same why india didn't won wtc . Watch out what happens in the first inning , even you can compare it with wc final. India has a very weak one change bowler , in prev series also in sa , siraj got injured and we were left with a weak one change bowler , india goes all guns blazing in first 15 overs and after that we have no answer . I dont know why shardul is so u understimated , people who have seen him in ipl is different from what he actually is , for years he has opened bowling for mumbai ranji team , and he is a proper swing bowler like bhuvneshwar and Deepak Chahar , even more experienced now , Till Shami or Siraj is present as India's one change bowler , India is doomed not to loose any series . India's domination in 2018 came due to the reason of shami being a one Change bowler , that is what Pat cummins is ..
4:00 - Ik test cricket is meant to be a game of patience but surely less than 2 over can't be great viewing unless a team is batting slowly for a 4th innings draw.
4 real fast pacers are required to win matches in South Africa. Spin cannot win matches in South Africa. This time only 2 good pacers are there. Takur has lost his pace and looks quite average now than his form in India-Australia 20-21 series.Prasidh Krishna looks useless only.Indian batting lineup in this test series is also quite mediocre, they are unable to handle the pace, bounce and seam of the South African pitches 😡😡😡

When Kohli had a strong Indian team, he still couldn't lead the side to a test series in victory in NZ, South Africa, or England lol. He only won in Australia when they were without Warner and Smith. Credit for the 2020-21 test series victory in Australia goes to Rahane.
I think the best chance was Cape town 2018 which was squandered away as the batters had no prior preparation(*just landed and played test match after 3 days) and Jo'berg 2021-22 test where the bowlers just couldn't pick a wkt in 4th innings, aggravated by Kohli's absence and sub-par captaincy from KL. 2010-11 Cape Town India could have won, but they didnt try for the win. Major reasons as per me for not winning in SA: 1) Poor batting depth of India-We carry 4-5 no.11 in SA conditions 2) Spin bowling of India never had any impact in SA-Ashwin is an overrated bowler in SENA these days 3) Inconsistency in selections- esp seen in 2018 tour 4) Defensive captaincy on earlier tours- esp from Dhoni 5) Just relying on 2-3 batters to pull us through and 2 bowlers- hollow planning 6)**The most imp reason is BCCI's lack of vision and their emphasis on IPL and money-minting.
Hey man listen if you're the away team in South Africa, you need to beat the Cameraman, the Third Umpire and the SA team. 21/22 I have never seen DRS so quick to give not out for SA and then finding any angle to give India out.
India beat Australia with sub standard bowling attack. People must remember that. Indian batsman dont perform well in south africa because they cant lift the bat to chest height all the time. Most dont eat meat. So batsman who time the ball is unfit for South africa. Its not easy to time the ball that come at chest height. Error percentage shoot up. KL rahul is resonably tall for indian batsman standards. So he can play in this conditions. Gill issue is different. He is a loose ( lack of concentration) player. Not made for test matches. Yashasvi Jaiswal can be great in future. But india never liked strong minded individual. That is why india never had year of snake batsman. Opening spot is not good place for him. He should take over kohli spot if he gets injured. India must get rid of KL RAHUL. Unfortunately fate is written already. BCCI will appoint KL rahul as next captain. In fact he will be captain in all formats. If hardik pandya comes healthy he could beat KL rahul for captaincy. if Mumbai indians can win this IPL , Hardik pandya will be captain of india in all formats (CSK wont because they added a weakness in shardul thakur to csk.) Now Why Pandya has to prove not KL Rahul? KL rahul just play just enough better than everyone , so he will be default. You never expect KL rahul to win anything for india. he knows clearly that if he wins , people will ask for more. So he wont do shiet.
India should have played a 3-4 match series in South Africa. In all SENA countries India should play at least 3 match series. But, BCCI is giving too much priority to useless IPL.
Bro what? CSA doesn't have the funds to host a 3 match series at this point and they hope to recover financially through SA20, for which they need to cut down on their international slot. They literally lose money to test matches. There have been two different rows over the past 10 years over the BCCI wanting a longer series in SA with CSA unwilling to host them. I know that the BCCI is bad and all but do some research.
Cricket South Africa is bankrupt and cannot afford to host tests. They are hoping to make some profit out of SA20. The issue now is that SA20 and South Africa tour to New Zealand are colliding and CSA has announced a B-team to tour New Zealand. CSA is so poor that they are sacrificing World Test Championship points to make money via SA20. I think BCCI can offer them money to allow Indian domestic players in the South African domestic matches. That way at least some of the Indian batsmen and bowlers will get some experience on how to bat/bowl on bouncy wickets.
No team would be in the mood to win a test series after being bodied in front of a billion people in the WC final. The way they fell in the last test says a lot. Virat seems to be all aggressive but not delivering when it matters since 2017. If Virat was an Australian, he would've been surely criticized heavily but our culture is to idolize and idealize people no matter how much they dip.
245 was actually felt like a good score on that pitch in this match .But both Shardul and Krishna looked club level bowlers. And Siraj bowled only 1 good over.Bumrah only bowled well in patches.Clearly lack of match practice is hurting them. But I dont see us coming back 2-0 is on cards
Main reason being unlike Australia South Africa have never give them batting friendly pitches. Somehow the Australian board seems to have a liking for the india despite being humiliated twice by India.
India never won in south africa because indians cant play chest height balls. Except perth aussie pitches are benign. South africa always have one or two pitches where ball bounces chest height and indians cant play those balls. Old times indians left the ball to keep their wickets. India never send a team to win games , its all about who score 100 than winning. Winning needs different raw material. Even Dhoni team captitulate to 8-0 drubbing. So you do need more than a good captain , you need a batsman who can play in this conditions. South africa playing in this situation and better equipped to handle it. Main reason india never won because they never intend to win or prepare to win test matches in south africa. Kohli and Sreesanth made those wins on their own. India need a better coach and better captain and tall physically strong batsman who dont go wimp if ball pinged them in chest or arm. Can india win in South Africa? Anything is possible. If South africa had bad coach and bad captain than india. Its possible. If shastri was coach of india in last south africa series india would have clean swept South africa. Period. So all jarrord kimber theories are just a theory.

India was very timid under dhoni leadership
There are several reasons for it, some can be summarised as
1) Shorter no. of games: Apart from 1992 , all the series ranged from 2-3 games, hence chances for comeback are minimum once a test is lost, compare it to Australia and England where an average of 4-5 tests are played, if a game is lost chances are more of making a comeback drops drastically.
Shorter Number of games because of Cricket SA or BCCI ?
1992 - U know things are bad when you only have 3 pacers & 2 spinners on bouncy, swinging pitches
1996 - Same situation....3 seamers and 2 spinners is not an ideal combination...u could see Sachin was clearly struggling with his captaincy
2002 - Same situation....3 seamers and 2 spinners and a lot of controversy in the entire tour...with Sachin's ball tampering saga wit half the side being suspended
2006 - 1st test match won simply because of an Indian seamer destroying the SA top order and not allowing them to recover....we were sub par in the 2nd test and batted horribly in the 2nd innings of the 3rd test to let this series slip from our grasp
2010 - 3 seamers again....Horrible 1st test....brilliant comeback in the 2nd test and an overall brilliant performance in the 3rd test....still unsuccessful in winning the series
2013 - 3 seamers again...that 1st test would have broken a chase record had SA gone for the win....completely cleaned up in the 2nd test
2018 - For the first time ever went with 4 pacers...but the batsman failed to chase 208 in the 4th innings in the 1st test & 287 in the 2nd....and i remember that crazy Johannesburg pitch where no one was able to bat and we finally won a match
2021 - 4 pacers...Brilliant start with winning the 1st test...and then a horrible batting performance in the 2nd & the 3rd test as the pitch simply got better as the matches progressed and Dean Elgar being a brilliant captain
We clearly are struggling with the pitches & conditions...but need to go with a 4 pacer 1 spinner combination and keep hoping that we deliver with the bat
4 genuine pacers who can bowl really fast consistently with average speed above 140km/hr, then only bowl can do the magic in the South African pitches

It sucks how this is only a two test series. Should be three tests minimum
- Bumrah
- Ishant
- Shami
- Bhuvaneshwar
- Pandya
This combo could extract all 3 of swing, seam, and bounce, and unsurprisingly India won that test match.
India have just won a test in South Africa
this is about the series not individual matches

India will never win in RSA unless:
1.They plan a 5 Test series ,home and away,in the space of 4 -6 years(taking into account the already packed calendar).
No spin no win

Did Jarrod just click in pronouncing a venues name , there's a CLICK in the name ?????

Hey Jarrod going to do anything about David Warner or who should replace him
No team would be in the mood to win a test series after being bodied in front of a billion people in the WC final. The way they fell in the last test says a lot. Virat seems to be all aggressive but not delivering when it matters since 2017. If Virat was an Australian, he would've been surely criticized heavily but our culture is to idolize and idealize people no matter how much they dip.
So what is main reason? if you ask recursively , truth will come out. Inferiority complex in terms of physical strength.
Now I know why Australia and England could only win series in South Africa. Yes Sri Lanka also won once but it was more to do with the fate.
