  • Here is a fairly quick video of me using Trimble's SPS585 GPS system with tablet running GCS900. I have this system on demo for the moment. I am laying out a house and driveway for the start of a Next Era Excavation project. Like what you see? If you do buy this system, next time you should put in a post with 5/8in thread on it for the base. So if you come back to the site and need to check grade or a point then you will not need to relocalize, or as you say orientate. It just makes it easier in the long run.

    This was a great video explaining it. We are thinking about getting into GPS soon up here in Maine. We have all TopCon products for our lasers but it looks like Trimble has a slick setup for smaller contractors and its easy to use.

      Trimble products are great! Another good thing is you will be dealing with SITECH North East, the same dealer as me. I am in NH. They are awesome to work with and are super knowledgeable.

    We make White Oak Survey Stakes. We currently make 3 sizes because the Surveyors are so picky.
    Actual size is 1x1x48, .75x1.5x48, .625x1.125x48. With the smallest being the best seller by far.
    Tough to believe there is .65 of a lb difference from the biggest to smallest.

    I would be Leary about only calibrating with 2 points, 4 minimum is what I would use. On my projects I burn on as many as I can, SCS900 requires a minimum of 4. Trimble is great stuff!

    What precision level are you experiencing with the rover? Do you ever lose Wi-Fi link between base/rover?

    you dont need to draw if u dont get the data... in the Trimble pc programm u got a option to import pdf ... so you only have to scan the paper and import it (its a pay option)

    Do you have to do site calibration everytime you move your base (truck)

    I'm looking into similar systems. What are the advantages over a total station other than the GPS. My company is comparable in size and I guess I'm not seeing the need for the huge range of the GPS units plus the fact that you can lose GPS signal. Have not had much experience with the newer GPS systems. Keep up the great work.

      GPS is much more efficient & easier to use. The Trimble systems are accurate down to .02' horizontally & under .04' vertically. I use GPS for 80% of the layout I do on my heavy highway projects. Then add in machine control, makes a huge difference in production.

    Now does this help add gps to your flex or earthworks systems on the excavators?

    • @DirtNinja
      @DirtNinja  7 лет назад

      Yes it can in the future if I want it to. The gps receivers can be mounted on compact equipment, but not on larger equipment. They are not made to take the beating from larger equipment. Thus the cost savings with this system.

    There are definite advantages to GPS (I have 4 RTK receivers & 2 total stations).....but mistakes are even more likely/of greater magnitude when an error occurs. I understand the convenience factor, but can see this going really bad. If you're provided a .dxf, who is liable when a mistake is made, and a lot dirt is moved in the wrong location? Or even worse, on an adjoining property owner?.......I'm not trying to talk you out of it; in fact, I think you should buy it. But just be prepared for some VERY expensive lessons.

    • @DirtNinja
      @DirtNinja  7 лет назад +1

      Very true, good points. I always still do pull ties to one corner to double check that at lease one corner is in the right location. Just like my GCS Flex grade system in the excavator. I always get out of the machine at the beginning and check grade with my laser to make sure everything is correct.

      Double & triple check. I know that PLS's can purchase insurance for mistakes, maybe that's a possibility?

    what's the approximate cost of setup?

      Roughly $17k. It can be a little cheaper if you get a smaller display
