A lot of people say this show is making them depressed, but it's actually really comforting to see these people in their 20s struggling, for someone like me at least - 22 years old, college drop out and absolutely fucking clueless regarding how I'm supposed to live my life. It makes me feel less alone, like I'm not the only one dealing with this shit, and it gives me hope. This show has actually taught me that there's no age limit for finding yourself, for trying to figure out what the fuck is it that you want to do and who you want to ne.

I didn't see Marnie as being Selfish in the season finale. She pushed her ego aside to help her best friend. I think a great example of this is when she is taking pictures of herself in the bathroom and forgoes the Jazz event. She even says, "IT's not my time to be happy." I loved this finale because of the original Marnie Hannah Dynamic and how each of them ends of being the opposite of what they started as.

    • @Confettifun
      @Confettifun 3 года назад +16

I think she only did it because marnie likes people to be dependent on her. Its how her ex husband was and it was why she followed hannah. She needs to feel needed.
Hannah’s mom wanted her to leave because she is kind of stifling hannah’s growth by staying there and essentially being a pseudoparent

@@Confettifun That's like saying a nurse who likes to feel needed is selfish, despite the good they do. Everyone's human. There's always a self-interest angle if you look for one. I thought the way the show wrote Marnie's arc was pretty realistic - she's not magically transforming into a better person, but instead channeling her whole self, good and bad, toward a purpose that serves a loved one in need. Flawed, but better. Compared to the textbook pick me girl that she's been throughout the whole show, this was probably Marnie's finest hour. All while Hannah doubles down on being the villain and just keeps getting away with it.

This whole show is bleak. It was like a train wreck you can't look away from. Honestly, it was realistic, because so many people are so mean and shitty and horrible. Occasionally, there were little bits I loved. I'm glad Shoshana separated herself from the girls, and told them what's really going on. The best thing is Ray finally getting some real happiness. I am happy about the way things turned out. Some of the things listed in the video are so true to life. If the finale was all sweet, cliché saccharine, I would have been disappointed. Theres a difference between a season finale and a series finale. The ending for this show felt like a season finale and not a proper ending. I know lena wanted to leave things open ended and she doesnt have to do things the expected way but the way she went about it made me feel like i wasted my time watching this. Its kinda like when your favorite show gets canceled after 3 season what was the point of me investing my time. Adam and Hannah dont have to be together the girls dont have to be friends but at least let us know whats going on with them espically after a 5 month time skip. Jennny Warm, that's very possible, however, I find the choosing of that one character to tell that narrative odd and out of place. My reason being, we saw other characters (Marnie, Adam, Jessa, Ray and Desi) separate from Hannah throughout the season. Followed their stories apart from her and still we felt the distance between Hannah and basically everyone else with the exception of Elijah. To pick only one character to barely see in order to demonstrate the shift in Hannah's life feels uneven to me. But... you might well be correct.

The point I think people are missing is that Hannah was kind of our introduction to Girls. Our introduction to that group. We really traveled with her along the ride of the show and got to develop relationships with the other characters. So I think it’s only fitting personally that it end with her. It’s showing how through all the events that took place, of-course they all changed but primarily how much Hannah changed and even we as viewers changed with her. It’s about character development and maturing. That’s why I believed they focused on her.

I feel like everything tied up pretty well, tbh. It made me quite sad that Hannah and Adam couldn't make it work, but evidently they were trying for the wrong reasons. Adam got his closure with Hannah and Jessa made her peace with Hannah, which I think is the main thing each of them wanted to resolve. Whether Adam and Jessa end up together or not is left ambiguous which I think is perfect given audiences were probably very conflicted about Jessa and what kind of ending her character deserved.
Shosh is nothing to do with these Girls anymore, as evidenced by the penultimate episode, she thinks she is above them and has found happiness in her own way. I understand her desire to cut off what she thinks are toxic friendships, but she was pretty brutal in how she went about it. Anyway, her journey clearly ends here and to feature her in the finale would make no sense.
Ray found happiness with that nice chick from SNL and that made me very very happy :) If Ray hadn't got his happy ending, THEN I would have been seriously fucking pissed.
Elijah's career is going well but tbh I never really cared much for him, he was a selfish jerk throughout and never really improved much.
Marnie is still Marnie... what you gonna do? I think she is learning, but slowly, and maybe she will never be the sort of person who truly learns from her errors, but I feel like she is a better person than at the beginning and that her and Hannah's friendship is more honest than ever, which is good for both of them.
And Hannah is doing well. She persisted and got her baby to latch and to me that represents that she is a changed person who is willing to try hard and persevere with things now for the sake of her son and putting him above all other things, including herself.
It wasn't a perfect finale, and it wasn't a Super Happy Ending or anything, but it was realistic and true to Girls. I'll miss the show a lot :)

But then, you change, they change, life takes you in different directions... The essence of the show is in what Marnie says at the beginning of the finale: Elijah was Hannah's flatmate and best buddy, but now he is too involved with his Broadway career, Jessa is with Adam, Shoshanna literally despises them all... at the end, the only friend left it's her. The only thing I didn't like is, I wish that Adam hadn't ended up with Jessa. Adam and Jessa are both the type of person who need to be fixed, and since they both need to be fixed, they can't fix each other. I think Adam needs to be alone for a while and find what he really wants, and so does Jessa. They are a really bad couple in my opinion. They are very toxic, just like Adam and Hannah were.

Joseph Monaghan I don't watch the show but I have a problem with your comment that lena doesn't owe her audience a happy ending. she's owes her audience everything so she could've giving at least a satisfying ending in some way.

Joseph Monaghan she owes her audience an ending that does justice to the show as a whole which she didn't do. I'm more of a narrative person and I feel like Lena takes a more political and ethical take which annoys me

The relationship between an artist/creator and their audience/fans is...well...there needs to be a balance.
Yes, fans/the audience are what make the artist successful. However, artists should be able to have complete control and autonomy over their creations. It is their unique voice and style that drew their fans to them in the first place and it should be the reason they stick around. Not making an artists/creator their bitch.
There is nothing wrong with an artist/creator choosing to go in the direction that fans/the audience wants.
However, art (here meaning any artistic or creative endeavour the results in something and audience can consume or engage with) is not made to order. Fans have this false idea that every creator is to submit to their demands and make what THEY want. That's not how art works.

It is her show though, she gets to do it her way. Season 5 ending made it clear that she is the deserving main character and after a while the rest of them didn't have much to offer.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Girls. It reminded me of my time when living in NY as an acting student. This is exactly how I experienced people in NY. But ... I thought the ending was more than meh. Feels like it was pure fishing for a quick finale. Just think of Adam - the most evolved and matured character in the series, offers helping raise Hannahs' child, not even HIS, and boom he's never to be seen again?! As much as I watch their scene at the diner and as much as I recall people say H + A both realized it wouldn't work between them ... I really don't get it *LOL* Jessa seemed having lost herself completely and Ray probably had the best ending. Soshanna, I always loved her quirkiness, and she had a great ending, too. She grew and matured and was finally taken serious. Hannah? Well, my hubby and I often looked at each other when she had her many five seconds of total liberal airheadedness. And she kept that up until the very end.

«the most evolved and matured character in the series, offers helping raise Hannahs' child, not even HIS, and boom he's never to be seen again?!» Well, but that's life. Sometimes you think some people will be with you forever and then, after a couple of years, they've disappeared forever. In the meanwhile, you can be often surprised about the people who actually stay around.

I liked what this show attempted to do, but I watched the whole thing and I always had more issues with it than not. I know that these characters are more or less written to be complicated and at time unlikeable, but then people say that they see themselves in the four girls or that this is the quintessential show about millennials and I just don't see it. I don't see any of this as relatable and it feels like the show's mission statement at times was to show how awful millennials were (bleak futures, narcissists, immature, etc.). It was like watching a show that just wanted to shit on its audience by shitting on its characters. (This isn't to say that there weren't episodes I liked or even loved at times, I'm making a broad statement here.)

I hate that they had Adam randomly went to Hanna when him and Jessa where obviously meant to be. I mean they had issues but they where so similar and from season 2 I wanted them to get together. Also Hanna told Adam she doesn't want to be with him but got so pissed that she lost a friendship for a season???!!!! I ended up hating Hanna because she is the most selfish person ever! It just did not make any sense for Adam to do that, I think the writer messed up :/
