The father should serve every day of his son's sentence too. Knowing his son had schizophrenia and was off meds, knowing he was troubled and already had encounters with the law, he unlocked the gun safe and let him take his pick. Great parenting! @@garbagemancan it is when a condition of the court giving you the property is for you to agree to not allow your son to have access to it. And then, you know, you go ahead and directly violate that condition.
If he didn't want the responsibility, he could've simply said, nope, I don't want the guns or the responsibility. But by willingly accepting them (rather than them being forfeited to the state), he assumed the responsibility that the court placed on him at the time. A co-worker (who had become a friend) suddenly started acting differently. We were all about 20 yrs old, and working on a university campus while attending school. I noticed that he was posturing more, and swinging his head dramatically whenever he was talking. One day, he just disappeared, from work and from our group. We tried calling g his home, but we're only told that he was away. Months later, someone told us that he was institutionalized with a severe case of schizophrenia. We never saw him again. I have wondered about him for the last 40 years. (I heard that his younger brother went the same way. Tragic.)

This is such a sad case. I've dealt, firsthand, with schizophrenic patients in a full blown episode...it isn't pleasant. These poor souls are literally terrified of something that is real to themselves. The mental health system is absolutely broken and have failed so many people like him. This is one case, that truly deserved the insanity plea. I hope that he isn't just a prison cast-off and can find the help and mental peace he, so rightly, deserves.

In the true crime world, its common to have creators spend too much time dwelling on the gory details or minimizing the crime itself, or cracking wise about the case. It's refreshing to have someone just state what happened, go through the investigation and interrogations with a conclusion. Please keep creating these videos!

Some of his hallucinations are not "real life people" and when he's on his meds, he misses them like you'd miss your real life friends. It's so incredibly sad.
And listening to Travis, you can genuinely tell he believes his delusions 100% and the s is not an act or excuse. He's really upset.... You can hear it in his voice. :( I feel like so many people either didn't help the situation, and may have even contributed (by giving his guns back).

People like this should be either forced to take their pills, or not be in a wider society roaming free. It shouldn't be up to them to take or ignore the pills, if they decide to take them. It's a disaster waiting to happen. I hope the teenager you know takes her pills, and you or your family won't end up like these victims. Then some other youtube commenter will say. @@9thumbsup79look up the brain’s propensity towards the negative - we are hardwired from evolution to be apprehensive about new stuff. Amygdala triggers fight, flight, freeze and fawn - NOT cheer, dance, happy, smile. Feelings of fear and anger are so strong because they used to keep us alive - and they are carried into our brains today. Sadly, during a psychotic episode the cortex does not “work” - so you can’t reason with someone in that state, you have to calm them until a point where their thinking brain starts taking over again. It’s like learning new things when you are paralyzed by fear- it’s almost impossible. So there’s a lot of interesting neurobiology in this stuff. Will encourage to look up this stuff, because it’s mindblowing. Btw, all brains display these patterns, but the psychiatric episode it may happen more often and with more force.

At best, something like schizophrenia is managed, not cured. No mental disorders are curable. It's why treatments have such a small success rate. However if you have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or any psychosis type of mental illness and a MD has worked out a Rx regimen that worked when taken appropriately but you CHOOSE not to take the medication that have been prescribed therefore the hallucinations return and an act of violence is committed the defendant should not even be able to use the insanity defense because you were sane enough to make the choice to not take the medication knowing you should be taking it 100% of the time! This country is so screwed
No mental health treatment for a clear mad man, he does mass shooting during an episode and goes to prison for it, and the guy who gave him the gun goes free.
    Wtf are we doing here?!

I agree. The wording of that was odd. Just shows people still do not comprehend mental illness.

My brother has schizophrenia too. most people who have it do not hurt others. Then there's people like Travis and my brother.
I could so see him doing something like this and he had unlimited gun access... terrifying. thankfully he's in jail right now, but he committed a different heinous crime instead.

Okay but Taylor shouldn't have led him on like that, climbing on top of Dairy Queen and playing hard-to-get

It does sound funny, but if you legitimately saw someone following you everywhere and they wouldn't go away no matter how often you asked, and police did absolutely nothing about you being harrassed--
To him Taylor was stalking him. That was his reality. His brain thought she was as real as everyone else.

It is mindboggling how preventable a lot of these tragedies induced by mental illnesses are, and how noticeable the mental illnesses are, yet nobody knows how to prevent this. It takes a village to raise a person.

The police that previously let him go too should get locked up as well for not doing extensive research about his background history. He should have been evaluated more until release.
