you're so hard on the pregnant skeleton sketch lmaooo . its a good idea though genuinely, i think its a delightful horror creature design, and the clashing ideas are pretty cool :)
Get on those projects! It's great to have a goal that makes you study some different things that you wouldn't otherwise know you needed/wanted to study.
@proko - I feel I learned more in these last 2 videos of you showing/talking about your old work then any typical "how to draw" videos. Thank you for these! Cheers!
There was a period during lockdown where i watched a ton of your videos and dug way into drawing again, but (semi-)recent career changes cut a lot of my time and I find that a lot more difficult to do. I still do design work for events from time to time and draw when I can, but I gotta say I really miss these videos. Your style of presentation and how approachable your lessons are is always so refreshing and I'm gonna try to get back into it as much as I can!
I think this exemplifies how much work is involved learning to draw well. That's a very large box full of work and I'm sure it's a tiny fraction of your total body of work.
Love this video and your insight! So many people I know are heavily discouraged by not being immediately good at something (Including myself) that they often give up before they even give themselves proper time to see improvement and progress. Seeing other’s progress a huge inspiration to just. keep. going 👏🏻
I was so enticed by the video that I got sad it finished 😅😂. Yeah, keep opening those time capsules! Not only are they fun stories, they also show that even if we amateurs struggle a bit now, we can all get to new heights eventually. It is really inspiring!
Seeing more of the process of how to get to a finished piece is really helpful! Since having been drawing for like a year I have those moments of "ok, how do I take what I'm learning and make something finished?" Also coming up with small projects to work on, without getting caught up in having it have to be perfect the first time lol
@Proko Sir, you are one of best. Your skill is amazing, The manner in which you present your ideas and concepts i noteworthy, An excellent teacher you are. Thanks again,
When you’re young you have ideas for your art, it’s not so much about the technical skill and perfection. And ideas are really what resonate with people. The trick is not to get too obsessed with technical perfection, and keep your passion for your ideas. But, at the same time, technical skill can help your ideas come across better.
It’s very comforting to see the the growth from then to now not at all saying those aren’t good meaning they are good and still with time and consistency you sharpened and sharpened I wonder what we will see in another 20 years 🫣
I don't know if you caught the previous one but we recently did another video with his student work here: ruclips.net/video/vNPFs_wBVzM/видео.htmlsi=3Kyv1RQY20UKeYxX
6:11 yoooo I painted that exact same elephant with really vibrant colors on a huge canvas as a Christmas gift for my brother and he has hung it over his bed for like 15 years. He loves that painting.
Back in my days, I used to cross miles and miles through the Himalayas to just woodcarves of humans living in ancient china to do a valuse study. 4000 BCE 👍🙂
6:47 Wow, Proko. Your caricature of your grandpa 👴 and his buddy playing checkers reminds me of some grotesque caricature that Gustave Doré could have pulled off!
The early Watts work, I showed off in the video I mentioned at the start of this one. You can see that here: ruclips.net/video/W8OjAupwnIk/видео.htmlsi=N2HALI7rQw7sGOSg

It is truly the dark side of life!!! And it is traditional mandarin that is only used in Taiwan and Hongkong now in the world! Why you wrote that Proko?😂 by the way, you wrote it very good!😂😂
The time it takes for improvement is different for everyone and will depend on the honest feedback from critique loop that you set for yourself. Set a study plan and give yourself an honest review of how you're doing. Break it down into small steps so you have smaller goals, rather than just getting to be a great artist. Remember that even if you improve slower than someone else has, it doesn't indicate that you'll be a worse artist than them in the long-term. Just keep at it. Here's a link to our free Drawing Basics course playlist. Hope it helps! ruclips.net/p/PLtG4P3lq8RHHMNwxuVk0IcGRtPGHi4vN9&si=duad55_Y31RDIn2W
i know its not good to compare your works with others but my god i am so behind. I am in hs and consider myself an artist by hobby, i draw anime characters, meanwhile this guy is doing value studies, studying composition and different styles and techniques. good lord we need to lock in.
Genuinely saddens me that I didn't have as much competition in school. A small West Virginia school with an art teacher that had to balance 30-40 kids that didn't want to learn, just get a free pass. And me, I was challenged a little by the projects, (I was the only one especially challenged, everyone else, she didn't want to waste energy with their assignments because they didn't want to waste energy learning. Any time someone showed promise, she lit up and started assigning them special projects. There were maybe 3 people in my 4 years in high school. If I'd have had more students challenging me personally, I would probably have improved a lot earlier.
Proko, what do you do when you lose motovation to draw? For context, I only started drawing about 20 days ago. I had an art class that I really enjoyed, but felt like i wasn't improving so I started to learn basic proportions and 3D figures. Then I started to practice more dynamic poses with my figures, and most recently learnt to draw the male torso with all the main musles. At this point, I getting tired of these sketches so I started working on a side project that wasn't related to the sketches and had a lot of fun. I then took a 2 day break from drawing. But now i want nothing to do with it. I tried to finish my other side project i started a week or so ago, but I really didn't enjoy it and was not putting any effort in it the whole time. Now i just don't know what to do. Pls help
20 days is very little time, although if you're young, it might feel like a lot. And what you did ramped up in intensity very quickly which is painful and tends to signal your body to get away from the pain by avoiding it. This also happens in athletics training - you can become overtrained and exhaust your nervous system. The trick to not overtrain is to apply a "progressive overload" strategy and look for ways to reset and recover over a few days, then start building up again. My suggestion as an adult beginner(well, a few years in) is to work on making the studio space fun for yourself first, which is a combination of having materials you can tinker and experiment with, and subjects you know want to draw - both pictures(I like to print and collect them in folders) and still life(toys are very good for this). When you fill the space with things you like, it becomes a place you want to return to, which can counteract the desire to get away from it. Then, don't commit yourself to any projects, just let yourself start with a doodle that uses those materials as inspiration. Build up in intensity to the more technical stuff if you're enjoying the session and want to push a little more. But do look for the comfort zone and allow yourself to return there frequently. Something I would do a lot earlier on was to practice blind contour over and over while passively watching video - not really worried about the quality of it, just letting the pen move and filling up the page with lots of marks. This was a way of keeping myself going on days where there wasn't energy to push more than that.
No offense, but you do have talent. Doesn't sell as many books to say so though. But you do have talent unto which you applied discipline. Your drawings from school are better than some who tried drawing their entire life. That said, if they had fun it actually doesn't matter. Maybe some of them make less realistically correct drawings but might be making very original work. But you, you do have talent in drawing and selling your teachings. All the best to all who started or have started on their creative journey. Have a great day.... 😊.
im gonna ask something faux pas here, but, HOW do you learn what excites you? i know the obvious answer, "try everything", but i mean something more practical, like, a way to try different "genres" to narrow things down somehow.
It is that answer, really! Try a project that interests you but has you doing something new, collaborate with others that work with different skills/tools, and don't say "no" to something that's a little different if you have the time to explore.
I love the withering pregnant woman. I think being edgy is a mandatory phase for every single artist. The skill level was incredible before your college but there is still such an obvious jump in skill now.
Starting when you're young can be super useful. But you can start learning art as a senior citizen and gain incredible mastery. It's never too late to start 💪
@ProkoTV oh shit you actually read that sorry if it sounded whinie, it's just really frustrating looking at the progress you've made in high school while all that I had was a very shitty history of art classes

@ProkoTV thanks
Proko's site has a beginner course that's honestly amazing. FYI if you're looking for a course.
@Lockdown_502 yeah saving money for the full course
I'm currently doing the course. It's pretty great.

8:11 for some reason this is my favorite drawing so far, it looks like unintentional atmospheric perspective
