Thanks, Charlie, Hannah, and the whole Proko team for putting this all together. I'm so impressed that you found all those source paintings that I was copying. Seeing them side by side was a reckoning I could never have imagined..
I love that you can capture life so well in your art. You've been instrumental in my journey. Thanks for sharing! Edit: haha you are probably right about Elizabeth, NJ. I hope that you can catch the cherry blossoms in branch brook park in spring some time! Set against the basilica
I like the part where James is talking about you don't need to draw as you see and measure all the things. And at the side Proko appears measuring everything . 😂 good video btw
I would never have imagined that James Gurney is a normal and chill human being if it weren't for these videos of him and the interviews, in my imagination he was a creature half gnome and half mad scientist with a machine that can go back in time and/or travel between dimensions.
Both of these things are true at the same time, he's a chill human being who happens to simultaneously be a mad scientist with a machine that can hop through time and dimensions lol Also, was this a Heimerdinger reference?
@ProkoTV I've heard about the series (I have a friend who is obsessed with this series and the game 😂) but I've never watched it or played the game, it didn't really appeal to me. It's really a very interesting coincidence.
Those early videos are unwatchable. The camera person constantly racking the focus with only a sliver in focus at a time is an aweful experience. Then they only had short ad videos for a year or so to get people to leave youtube to their site. They finally got normal videos and they slow down the cut enough to look at the art.
James Gurney's art history knowledge is inspiring. He just soaks in and loves all these skilled craftsmen who have paved the way for modern day artists. Btw, his free substack is chalk full of these types of over views; I've learned a lot from it.
Thanks for this, I've been waiting for James Gurney's sketchbook. I also do the sight freeze thing when trying to capture something in motion so that was nice knowing that someone far more skilled does it too, and I thought that he was going to say he likes to make vehicles behave like animals not rubber😅 that's what they look like to me anyway, which seems like a fun idea to try, to make inanimate objects behave like animals or characters sounds like a fun experiment.
James Gurney is such a treasure. His sense of whimsy and curiosity never fail to inspire me and I think the art world is very blessed for all the info he captures and shares on his channel and blog.
love it - but have to say as a female artist it is so depressing sometimes to hear not one female name. not james gurney's fault obviously but my god sometimes it's so tough and sad
Much respect to Mr Gurney but, I wish people would stop saying this or that artist is/was "self taught".. I get it, they didn't go the traditional way (Art school), but by learning from books or going to museums you're indirectly learning from others, whether it's art school or not
His background is a little more complicated than just being Polish, though that's seen a lot in his work. We don't take issue with your interpretation of him being purely Polis or James' Polish-Russian version.

Thanks for giving us some of your time during LightBox! We never could've guessed where some of these stories would go lol
Editors are on point

The GOAT James Gurney 😳
James is the embodiment of, "do the work."
Truly GOAT.
James Gurney, a living master who paints masterpieces even on every small sketchbook page!

@ProkoTV no, I don't know what that is, I'll look it up later, what a coincidence.
@@Lalikaki-es7ug You kind of described some events of the show Arcane, that was all lol
@ProkoTV I've heard about the series (I have a friend who is obsessed with this series and the game 😂) but I've never watched it or played the game, it didn't really appeal to me. It's really a very interesting coincidence.

‘Trojan Horse Is a Unicorn’, take note: Camera goes on sketchbook not on person for 70% or more of the video.

THE GOAT RETURNS
So much to learn from this one! As popular a James is among artists he is still way underrated.
James Gurney's art history knowledge is inspiring. He just soaks in and loves all these skilled craftsmen who have paved the way for modern day artists. Btw, his free substack is chalk full of these types of over views; I've learned a lot from it.

I wish I was more imaginative
i do this every night. we call it lucid dreaming in australerica
Sone people are lucky to travel without being terrorized .
love it - but have to say as a female artist it is so depressing sometimes to hear not one female name. not james gurney's fault obviously but my god sometimes it's so tough and sad

What? If they are self taught they are self taught who cares? Nobody is telling you to learn a certain way. Do what works for you
just to clarify - Henryk Siemiradzki was Polish painter - for sure not Russian!

His background is a little more complicated than just being Polish, though that's seen a lot in his work.
