I met Owen Hart in Portland airport in 1998 or 1999. No camera to snap a pic, no pen, just shook his hand and said I loved his work. Super friendly, didn’t seem bothered. Great video.

Double J's tribute changed my entire concept of wrestlers. I hated that guy but seeing the real him devastated from losing his friend was agony. I remember watching this episode live, still makes me tear up. If there's a heaven, the king of hearts is there.

A lot of these tug HARD on the Hart-strings, but hearing Jeff Jarrett and Debra, who had so much interaction with Owen over the last months of his life, both completely breaking apart ... that had me crying again.
I have nothing but respect for Double J after this interview. Absolute class act and nothing anyone says will take that respect away. Owen hart would have been proud.
When this happened I was a single guy with not many responsibilities and it was a huge loss, looking back now as a Dad, it is very hard to know he couldn't say goodbye to his family one last time.
What is even worse for Jeff Jarrett is the wife he spoke about here also died on the same date 23rd of May ( different year) so that day every year must be incredibly hard for him and he must hate it.
I was in the Kiel Center for this show. The Owen chants started long before the cameras started rolling and continued through the last person walking out of the building. Many tears were shed that night.
I was at that show too. I was only 15 at the time, and saw the PPV the night before, and had no idea what to expect. It was crazy how every story line just stopped, it was like watching a house show but with all the talent present.
On May 24, 1999, a severe thunderstorm rolled through my area and knocked out the power. I didn't get to see RAW is Owen for over 2 years after it aired when I made friends with a new kid who just so happened to tape the episode before he moved to town. I was so mad I wasn't able to tune in on this night and pay my respects as a fan the proper way. RIP Owen Hart.

Me and my friends talked about it in school and it was senior skip day for me so I just hung out at the cafeteria and sat with them just speaking on Owen Rip King of Harts
One thing I noticed at the time. It's awkward but the beginning of the Edge and Christian/Hardy Boyz fued started on this episode. They both had good matches, and the Freebirds got name dropped in both of their matches' commentary (with Lawler drawing attention to it). Had rhis episode on VHS, had just become a fan and Owen was one of the first wrestlers I gravitated to. He is always missed.
Mark’s poem at the beginning was powerful and heartbreaking. You can tell he’s someone trying to process and mourn a friend and colleague while honoring his memory. A beautiful and heartfelt send off to the King of Harts. RIP Owen 🕊️

I don't know about anyone else, but seeing Droz give his tribute knowing that very soon after he would suffer his own carrer ending and life threatening injury is extremely sad to me. I was also struck by how torn up HHH was. He could really hardly choke out what he wanted to say, it looked like it was super important to him to talk about Owen even though he could barely get it out.
With his high profile marriage and main event status, I think a lot of people forget that Hunter has a genuine love for the business. That’s also the connection he shared with Owen. They were actually very similar: they both had a passion for the business and were two of the cleaner guys when out on the road. You can tell that Owen’s loss hit him hard.
It’s interesting, cause I doubt Owen liked HHH very much due to the events from the past 2 years. I wonder how they got along in the late 90’s after Montreal?

Paul and Owen corresponded Quite alot backstage and it was Owen's promoter that convinced Vince Russo and Brisco to put HHH over as the New Leader of DX after Shawn quit Kayfabe in 1998 because of his Back injury. Paul took Owen's Death Hard. He and Dwayne found out right after their Match was finished at Over The Edge.

I met Owen when I was like in 3rd grade at an autograph signing at a carpet store in New York, he was super nice to me, I still remember it. I still have the autograph framed. RIP OWEN 🙏

my biggest surprise seeing this again is Holly saying Owen offered to 'put him over'. That wasn't something that you heard at the time. Seriously this brought the tears again. Owen was one of my favorite's, You could tell his heel persona was tongue in cheek. I'll never forget him winning the tag titles with Yokozuna and jumping up and down like a little kid.
I always see late 93- early 97 Owen heel character as a kid acting out after being in the shadow of his famous successful brother, not evil but spiteful and obnoxious like a spoiled brat would be. The prodigal return of a weeping Owen hugging Bret and being back in the fold is one of the best reconciliation moments in wrestling history, the little boy finally accepting his brother. Owen wasn't a great promo but he was phenomenal with visual moments and he knocked it out of the park.

I watched it when it aired. I'm Canadian and grew up on Stampede. Only wrestling show that made me cry. You handled the episode with tact and grace. RAW is OWEN was the chance for us fans to grieve Owen Hart.

I lost my fiance 2 and a half months ago suddenly in a car crash. We went to bed together late, and 5 hours later, she was gone. I watched this when I was a teenager, and it hits differently now when you've lost someone you love so very much. Life is so short and so precious. Watching everyone's reactions, especially Road Dogg and Debra really hit me hard. Love the people close to you while you can. Always tell your people you love them because one day you might not be able to and it will break you.
Always felt that Owen deserved to be more, his in ring abilities were second to none plus excellent on the mic. Easily one of the greatest wrestlers in history! Thank u Owen King of hearts.
Watching this as an adult…. I’m not just filled with the same soul crushing sadness I was back in 1999 but knowing what I know now about Owen’s concerns about the spot…. Vince making sure the show went on, throwing poor JR under the bus… I am filled with so much anger.
I have to agree. Vince and the WWE deserved all the backlash they got over how they decided to continue the show despite Owen dying and even sued by Martha over the incident. But it is nice to see the other superstars speak of how great of a man Owen is.

The Mark Henry poem made me go through an enormous emotional roller coaster. I lost a friend of mine a 6 years ago. This kid could make you smile when everything was going wrong. He was only 15. I remember the emotion I felt at his funeral and they came flooding back hearing Mr. Henry pour his heart out.
One of the Owen tributes that goes under the radar is on the show that only aired in spain titled WWF Super Astros where they share stories of Owen when he was in Mexico.
R.I.P. Owen. The business didn't deserve such a good human being. This RAW episode was close to my birthday that year and I'll always remeber the sadness we all felt in our household from your passing. A true legend and even better person.
Owen Hart is the reason I got into wrestling. He looked like my uncle, so I would watch him thinking it was my uncle. Through him I learned how to truly love wrestling. I celebrate his life every year.

I remember this episode like yesterday. I'm from Alberta, only 2 hours drive from Calgary. The Hart family is loved in my area. Owen was one of the greatest technicians in history. Debra is a Professional. She was very mutual and Cordial with Owen. Even SHE admired Owen for Refusing a Storyline where Owen and her Flirt with each other. Her "Busty Valet" Persona was NO fault of own. During the Titan Sports era of WWE when it still WWF, The Angle Policies were Straightforward: Do What your promoter tells you or your terminated. Debra did Meet Martha Hart later and told her that she would have NEVER played along with any angle having it appear that Owen was being unfaithful to Martha, Both Women understood the Business.
Took me 4 breaks, 7 beers, and 3 hours to get through this one. I watched this on PPV, and I only felt a fraction of what his friends and family felt. Probably my first real exposure to death, at 11. Rest easy, man. The Blue Blazer gimmick was over-the-top awesome. Thanks for, "Kickin' his leg out of his leg..." But mostly, thanks for being part of my childhood.

I watched the PPV live as it aired with my sister. I didn’t go to school the next day I was so upset. To me, the Raw was cathartic and I was able to go to school the next day.

I watched that live back in ‘99. Watching it back was even more depressing. I broke down at least three times in the first 10 minutes. There have been lots of wrestlers over the years and far too many that have passed away too soon. But there was something different about Owen. You felt like you knew him, like he was a friend of the family. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for his family living without him all these years. He was the best!
I still have this Raw etched in my brain 25 years later. Was 14 years old and it was honestly unfathomable that it happened. I don't think another wrestling death hit me as hard until Eddie.
I remember this happening, I grew up in a small town close to Calgary (where the Hart family is from). I was in 3rd grade, everybody talked about it at school, even non wrestling fans were sad.

I gave a big presentation on pro wrestling in my senior year English class the morning after Over the Edge and had no idea what one of my classmates was talking about when she mentioned someone died at the PPV. I mentioned it in the speech, and didn't think to do it back then, but I dedicate that A I got to Owen.
This was a respectful and very well done. I was in high school in Edmonton when this happened. Some of my classmates had known the harts and it made it all the more real. RIP King of Harts

I cried hard when I first watched the show back in 99. This time has been no different. When I first started watching this series, I had often wondered how this would be handled. I just want to say something. This show (that episode of RAW) gave me the opportunity to know Owen better. All those stories. After that, I searched for more stories. The watch story is amazing. I watched Owen since WM5 and he was so good, always wonder how far he would go. RIP Owen Hart.
I remember watching this thinking “I don’t think I’ll ever feel this much sadness watching wrestling ever again.” I didn’t. Until Eddie passed and I remember my brother who was 8 when Owen passed and didn’t really comprehend it saying “This hits different.” And then last year. Both of us, as adults finding out about Bray…. There has been so much sadness in a business that brings us so much joy.
This REALLY tugs at the heart strings, even 25 years later. I remember this like it was yesterday. Between this and the Eddie tribute show were the toughest shows in WWE history.
I thought I could get through this video without crying, but all the memories of that night made it impossible. Owen will never be forgotten, and he should be honored for his wrestling legacy and the incredible human being that he was.
This episode was one of the first times I ever really saw kayfabe getting broken. Seeing faces crying over a heel, along with a lot of big, tough heels shedding tears over a guy definitely brought a different reality to wrestling, and showed that there was a different side to everyone. I was at the house show in Chicago(Allstate Arena) the night before Over the Edge. I remember Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett vs the Brood. Owen was really entertaining during the match and had the crowd laughing during certain spots. It was pretty surreal to see his last match. RIP Owen

One thing I noticed at the time. It's awkward but the beginning of the Edge and Christian/Hardy Boyz fued started on this episode. They both had good matches, and the Freebirds got name dropped in both of their matches' commentary (with Lawler drawing attention to it).
Had rhis episode on VHS, had just become a fan and Owen was one of the first wrestlers I gravitated to.
He is always missed.
I have this taped on the same tape as Over the Edge PPV.
Another cool fact. Owen and JJ had a dark tag team match with Edge and Christian in Chicago the night before Over The Edge.
The part where the camera pans to Mark Henry looking up and you see the tears fall down his face never fails to get me too…RIP OWEN

This was hard to watch. Not just remembering Owen, but seeing tributes from folks who are also no longer with us, like Darren Drozdov and Joanie "Chyna" Laurer. It's hard, but we need this. We need to remember

I had forgotten about Jim Ross saying he hoped he could be as good a man as Owen so he could see him again one day. Made me cry then and makes me cry now.
I don't know about anyone else, but seeing Droz give his tribute knowing that very soon after he would suffer his own carrer ending and life threatening injury is extremely sad to me. I was also struck by how torn up HHH was. He could really hardly choke out what he wanted to say, it looked like it was super important to him to talk about Owen even though he could barely get it out.
With his high profile marriage and main event status, I think a lot of people forget that Hunter has a genuine love for the business. That’s also the connection he shared with Owen. They were actually very similar: they both had a passion for the business and were two of the cleaner guys when out on the road. You can tell that Owen’s loss hit him hard.

Paul and Owen corresponded Quite alot backstage and it was Owen's promoter that convinced Vince Russo and Brisco to put HHH over as the New Leader of DX after Shawn quit Kayfabe in 1998 because of his Back injury.
Paul took Owen's Death Hard. He and Dwayne found out right after their Match was finished at Over The Edge.
@@dukes1993724 I genuinely think Owen and HHH were at least cordial. Chyna mentioned that she and Owen had a hairstyle rib going on in the tributes. Not many people would play sweet and silly inside jokes to the girlfriend of a man you actively dislike. I think Owen and HHH were OK in 1999.
I remember watching the opening moments of this with my father. His words: “They would all much rather be anywhere than where they are right now.”
I met Owen when I was like in 3rd grade at an autograph signing at a carpet store in New York, he was super nice to me, I still remember it. I still have the autograph framed. RIP OWEN 🙏

Tonight, Owen Hart competed against “The Ultimate Warrior” at Madison Square Garden, 7:30 pm. My friend who we took ended up winning free tickets also.

my biggest surprise seeing this again is Holly saying Owen offered to 'put him over'. That wasn't something that you heard at the time. Seriously this brought the tears again. Owen was one of my favorite's, You could tell his heel persona was tongue in cheek. I'll never forget him winning the tag titles with Yokozuna and jumping up and down like a little kid.
I always see late 93- early 97 Owen heel character as a kid acting out after being in the shadow of his famous successful brother, not evil but spiteful and obnoxious like a spoiled brat would be. The prodigal return of a weeping Owen hugging Bret and being back in the fold is one of the best reconciliation moments in wrestling history, the little boy finally accepting his brother. Owen wasn't a great promo but he was phenomenal with visual moments and he knocked it out of the park.

I lost my fiance 2 and a half months ago suddenly in a car crash. We went to bed together late, and 5 hours later, she was gone. I watched this when I was a teenager, and it hits differently now when you've lost someone you love so very much. Life is so short and so precious. Watching everyone's reactions, especially Road Dogg and Debra really hit me hard. Love the people close to you while you can. Always tell your people you love them because one day you might not be able to and it will break you.

Always felt that Owen deserved to be more, his in ring abilities were second to none plus excellent on the mic. Easily one of the greatest wrestlers in history! Thank u Owen King of hearts.
Sorry, I know opinions vary, but I always found his mic work awkward. Wrestling was fantastic though, & his personality evidently more so
Compared to today's "wrestlers " his mic skills were excellent his personality made his mic skills that much more genuine.

I’m not just filled with the same soul crushing sadness I was back in 1999 but knowing what I know now about Owen’s concerns about the spot…. Vince making sure the show went on, throwing poor JR under the bus… I am filled with so much anger.
I have to agree. Vince and the WWE deserved all the backlash they got over how they decided to continue the show despite Owen dying and even sued by Martha over the incident. But it is nice to see the other superstars speak of how great of a man Owen is.

The way you handled this episode is only way to do this tribute justice. Thank you for this. As a father myself who has lost some great people in my life, I can only think one thing. I hope that we can all leave a mark on this world like Owen did.

Opening with mark got me. Way to set up the bio with such a touching clip, it really puts you right back into the heat of it all as if it happened yesterday. You do such excellent work.
The Mark Henry poem made me go through an enormous emotional roller coaster. I lost a friend of mine a 6 years ago. This kid could make you smile when everything was going wrong. He was only 15. I remember the emotion I felt at his funeral and they came flooding back hearing Mr. Henry pour his heart out.
One of the Owen tributes that goes under the radar is on the show that only aired in spain titled WWF Super Astros where they share stories of Owen when he was in Mexico.
R.I.P. Owen. The business didn't deserve such a good human being. This RAW episode was close to my birthday that year and I'll always remeber the sadness we all felt in our household from your passing. A true legend and even better person.
Owen had class. They way everyone gushed about him proves that. He'll never be forgotten. RIP Blackhart.
Owen Hart is the reason I got into wrestling. He looked like my uncle, so I would watch him thinking it was my uncle. Through him I learned how to truly love wrestling. I celebrate his life every year.
Owen was the absolute best heel throughout the new gen era, something that should be highlighted far more than it is.
Hard to watch (especially considering that so many talking about Owen aren't with us anymore) but beautifully done. I think you did Owen's legacy proud by emphasizing who he was as much as his in-ring work.

I remember this episode like yesterday. I'm from Alberta, only 2 hours drive from Calgary. The Hart family is loved in my area. Owen was one of the greatest technicians in history. Great character work. So happy to see 25 years later, Owen is still remembered, so fondly remembered. Always the king of Harts and one of my all-time favorites.
Both bret and Owen are unreal wrestlers of the hart wrestling family.

Debra is a Professional. She was very mutual and Cordial with Owen. Even SHE admired Owen for Refusing a Storyline where Owen and her Flirt with each other. Her "Busty Valet" Persona was NO fault of own. During the Titan Sports era of WWE when it still WWF, The Angle Policies were Straightforward: Do What your promoter tells you or your terminated.
Debra did Meet Martha Hart later and told her that she would have NEVER played along with any angle having it appear that Owen was being unfaithful to Martha, Both Women understood the Business.

Took me 4 breaks, 7 beers, and 3 hours to get through this one. I watched this on PPV, and I only felt a fraction of what his friends and family felt. Probably my first real exposure to death, at 11. Rest easy, man. The Blue Blazer gimmick was over-the-top awesome. Thanks for, "Kickin' his leg out of his leg..." But mostly, thanks for being part of my childhood.
Every Thursday I look forward to reliving the war...not so much this week. I remember how sad it felt then, and watching this again is bringing back those same feelings
I watched the PPV live as it aired with my sister. I didn’t go to school the next day I was so upset. To me, the Raw was cathartic and I was able to go to school the next day.

I watched that live back in ‘99. Watching it back was even more depressing. I broke down at least three times in the first 10 minutes. There have been lots of wrestlers over the years and far too many that have passed away too soon. But there was something different about Owen. You felt like you knew him, like he was a friend of the family. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for his family living without him all these years. He was the best!

Was 14 years old and it was honestly unfathomable that it happened. I don't think another wrestling death hit me as hard until Eddie.
I remember this happening, I grew up in a small town close to Calgary (where the Hart family is from). I was in 3rd grade, everybody talked about it at school, even non wrestling fans were sad.
I was almost in my 20's when this happened and I have no shame in saying, I spent the whole show in tears. As a Canadian the Hart family are like Gods here walking among us, and this hit so god damn hard. You ARE still remembered to this day Owen
I gave a big presentation on pro wrestling in my senior year English class the morning after Over the Edge and had no idea what one of my classmates was talking about when she mentioned someone died at the PPV. I mentioned it in the speech, and didn't think to do it back then, but I dedicate that A I got to Owen.

I had watched the PPV live back then. At the time, I decided to tape Raw when I heard it was going to be a tribute show. I kept that tape for years. Sadly, it has been lost in a move or something. I cried hard when I first watched the show back in 99. This time has been no different. When I first started watching this series, I had often wondered how this would be handled. I was not disappointed. Thank you for handling it with such class.
8:20 - Totally forgot about that shirt. Loved it then, love it now. Owen is a badass. This episode hurts because I am much closer with my mortality than I was in my younger years. Fine work you have done with this tribute.
Owen Hart will have my respect for paving the way for other great technical wrestlers: Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega, Bryan Danielson, Cash Wheeler, Dax Harwood, etc. His feud with Bret is up there with the best.
I just want to say something. This show (that episode of RAW) gave me the opportunity to know Owen better. All those stories. After that, I searched for more stories. The watch story is amazing. I watched Owen since WM5 and he was so good, always wonder how far he would go. RIP Owen Hart.

This REALLY tugs at the heart strings, even 25 years later. I remember this like it was yesterday. Between this and the Eddie tribute show were the toughest shows in WWE history.
I thought I could get through this video without crying, but all the memories of that night made it impossible. Owen will never be forgotten, and he should be honored for his wrestling legacy and the incredible human being that he was.
This episode was one of the first times I ever really saw kayfabe getting broken. Seeing faces crying over a heel, along with a lot of big, tough heels shedding tears over a guy definitely brought a different reality to wrestling, and showed that there was a different side to everyone.
RIP Owen. We'll always miss you.

I was at the house show in Chicago(Allstate Arena) the night before Over the Edge. I remember Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett vs the Brood. Owen was really entertaining during the match and had the crowd laughing during certain spots. It was pretty surreal to see his last match. RIP Owen
