My parents bought me this PPV for my 12th birthday. I watched it with my sister. She never watched wrestling again after this show. It was surreal then and it’s surreal now.
Woof, that's a heartbreaking story. I feel for your sister. All these years later and I still can't believe we all sat thru that. I think we all left some of our innocence behind that night. I remember watching OTE on good ol scramble vision (fellow old heads know what I mean) and just sitting there with my jaw on the floor, watching the blurred images like a magic eye puzzle, wishing the whole thing wasn't true. Face or heel Owen was one of my childhood faves. RIP to the King of Harts
JR deserves a lot of credit for his work on this show. He literally just watched a man die in front of him and he was still somehow able to still commentate and fill dead air. I remember being in 3rd grade when this happened.
Also Carlos Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich, who unfortunately were the first ones to be forced to announce Owen's death during the Mankind/Boss Man match.
This is for the Owen Hart Foundation as well. My dad used to be part of the ring crew for Stampede Wrestling when they did shows in my hometown. He knew all the Hart family quite well. This one always have been a rough one in my household, but you covered it with upmost respect as possible. Thank you. We miss you Owen.
The way that Jim Ross handled that situation on the fly is nothing short of impressive. I watched this live as a 9 year old kid. Now as a 33 year old gown man re-watching it, I still cant say anything other than thank you JR. You guided the entire wrestling world that night. We are forever grateful for your class, professionalism and dedication to this sport.

Never forget that nobody from the WWF went with Owen to the hospital either in the ambulance or following him. Jeff Jarrett was the first guy at the hospital and he was still in his wrestling gear.
I thought I heard that The Rock went with him in the ambulance and then went back to the arena once Jarrett showed up. I forgot if it was Bruce Prichard or Jim Ross that said that. Wouldn't be the first time either was mistaken.
The most telling scene of this show to me is where the camera catches Undertaker looking around at the ring before Steve Austin walks down and he’s captured with a look that I can only describe as “barely collected” - and this was the guy that never breaks character for any reason. It looked like he was looking over at the turnbuckle where Owen fell. It’s a particularly hard visual to witness.
@@TheOddOne666 The shot I’m referring to wasn’t in the video. It was after Patterson was kicked out of the ring, Austin’s music hits, and the camera catches him looking down at the ring and turnbuckle before Austin storms into the ring. Trust me, I know the shot in question.
There's something very sobering about hearing JR ramble and clearly at a complete loss during the aftermath of Owen's fall. Then when King comes back and is clearly just shell-shocked from what he'd seen... One of the darkest moments in the history of the WWF for sure. I always wonder what the 2000s would've been like with Owen still around. The matches he could've had with the likes of guys like Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero... Thank you for covering this one, though. It's a hard one, but it's still a part of history, and we shouldn't try to ignore it.
Owen actually wrestled Angle in a dark match when Kurt was just getting started in WWE before a Heat taping a month or two before this. Course Angle was nowhere near what he'd become, but it happened. In Kurt's prime, those two coulda had some classics without a doubt.
Owen definitely would have had some classic bouts with Angle, Jericho, Benoit, and Guerrero. It would have also been great to see him reunite with Davey Boy later that year. Even if Owen left WWE in 2001 when his contract expired, it would have been easily possible that he would have gone to work with the Jarretts in TNA, maybe even win the NWA World title once or twice. What could have been.
I've heard he wanted to retire in 2000 anyway to spend time with his family, which if true just makes this even more tragic but alot of the dream matches wouldn't have happened anyway. M

My brother, my dad, and I watched this live. I had just turned 18 years old. It was the last PPV we all watched together, so it would've been etched onto my mind either way... but due to the events that transpired, the entire experience has haunted me ever since. A sad day in not just wrestling history... but in human history. I wouldn't trust any other person to handle covering this event with the delicate attention that it deserves. Thanks, Ryan R.I.P. I never liked Owen that much, his heel work was so great I could never shake him in my child’s mind from the nation of dumbo nation. It’s strange how our perception changes as we age. His life is a tragedy
I was at this show..it was sickening... I will say that I don't condemn them for continuing the show.. instead of sending everyone home filled with grief, Stone Cold hung out for what seemed like an hour, walking around the whole building, drinking beers and toasting nearly every section in the building after the end of the show... Thousands of people along with Steve Austin sticking around to pay tribute to Owen Hart the way only wrestling fans could. Nobody wanted to leave after the show, It was a strange feeling, like Owen's spirit was being held in that stadium as long as we all stayed there he was still with us.. it's certainly something I will never forget

I don't get why he agreed to the death ride in the first place ? It's super dangerous and scary ! If someone else did it first I'd be down, but no way would I just hop on for a ride without knowing I'll survive the day ! It's common sense what more can I say ?

One thing that I have always found incredible is that there is on youtube a tape of the Spanish commentators where you can hear Owen's fall and their reaction to it in real time, and Owen literally fell at the exact second that he was saying in the interview pre-tape "Why me?". That timing is beyond incredible and sad. As if he was commenting on his own death. RIP Owen Hart. One of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of wrestling boots. Gone but never ever forgotten.
I agree it should’ve been stopped I mean if this was his daughter or son he would’ve stopped the show immediately if the same thing happened to them but he couldn’t do it for one of his own talent this is why Vince McMahon gets criticized to this very day for a lot of things over the years that he’s done and this is one of them he gets heavily criticized for he could’ve stopped the shelf forget the money forget the ratings forget the pay-per-view buys One of his own Talley died in the ring and he didn’t even bother to stop the entire show so what if they lose money in the end it should’ve been stopped out of respect for him if that was me that’s exactly what I would’ve done.
They couldn't have done that and stayed in business. They would have gotten sued by cable companies, pay per view outlets, and would have had to refund millions of dollars to ticket holders. Their hands were tied.
Me and a bunch of my buddies were there at Kemper Arena that night. It was a very scary thing to watch. And watching the EMTs rushing Owen out on the stretcher was very concerning considering his face appeared to us to be blue and they had his mask off... we found out after the show from our local media that he died at the hospital. We were on the aisle where they walked out and you could see the tears in Jeff Jarretts eyes as well as HHH and The Rock. It was hard to watch after the event.
Ikr I wouldn’t know what to do I probably would’ve walked out and said sorry I can’t do this tonight. If I saw him fall or saw his limp lifeless body in the ring I wouldn’t be able to get it out of my mind. I would’ve been crying uncontrollably all night especially if I knew and talked to him all the time.
Jerry The King Lawler was with Owen in the ring the entire time while the EMTs were working on him. When Jerry comes back to the announce table his face said it all. He knew Owen was gone 😭💔
@hectorlopez1069 absolutely he was one of the first few people to get someone out there to help Owen the referee in the ring Jimmy Korderas who apparently yelled at Jimmy to move on the way down because Owen didn't wanna land on Jimmy or else he would have been killed to said that he saw Owen laying there, called out to him a few times and got no response Jimmy said that's when The King started telling crew members at ringside to get the EMTs and anyone out there Jimmy heard The King say to one of them "Owen fell from the ceiling and I think he's dead. Jimmy talked about it in his book.
Not often I make donations on this site but this event left such an impression on me as a kid, my dad had this recorded on VHS and I was so confused when the incident unfolded and when my dad told me what happened I couldn't believe it, even today it feels so surreal. It's strange to say but when I used to play WWF Attitude as a kid, I always picked Owen Hart in the Career Mode, it felt like a really cool tribute to him. Thank you for this well done review and one thing I do appreciate was you changing the music to reflect the sombre nature of this PPV.
I remember being 8 years old watching this live. One of the local bars here would show all the pay per views. The bar was full and we were all silent the whole time not knowing what was going on. Will never forget everyone completely stunned when JR announced his death. It even made the local news. Im 33 now and still remember it like yesterday.
I attended the house show the night before in Rosemont, IL along with two buddies, who I used to frequent live wrestling events with. We would always skip the later matches in order to meet the wrestlers leaving the arena and I still remember the two pictures we got of Owen. One was of him sticking his head out of the backstage curtain, where we excitedly said, "Hi Owen", and he waved to us and smiled. We ended up outside and got a photo of Owen in a cab. Looking back at the photo of him in the cab, he seemed to have a worried look on his face. Surely this is probably coincidence as we captured a moment in time, but was still eery to look back upon. We ended up having a moment of silence in my 7th grade classroom for Owen because I and those same two friends asked the teacher to do so seeing that we found out about his death the night before. My wife and I were watching this ppv at a restaurant and bar owned by a friend of the Hart family. The place had posters and autographed pics all over the place. Owen's actual Slammy award was displayed right by the front doors. After the accident, the mood in the restaurant was so thick with tension and worry you could cut it with a knife. All the staff were out watching the many TVs in the bar area. R.I.P. Owen. 😪
My brother and I bought most of WWF's pay per views in 98 and 99. This is one of the few we didnt buy. My dad worked third shift, so he was the way we found out Owen Hart had died before going to school Monday morning. I just remember being in a funk about it all day. I've never actually watched Over The Edge or any of the footage surrounding Owen's passing until now.
I remember that day. I was watching the PPV and when I saw Owen promo, I had a chuckle at the Hogan stuff. Then it got weird when the camera panned to the people. When they said Owen was taken to the hospital and the look of Jerry Lawler's face was sad, I was like 'He should be fine'. When they announced he was dead, I denied it was real. I thought it was just a storyline, albeit a sick one, but a storyline. News told of Owen's death, and I had a hard time staying focus on that day. At that time, I never lost anyone, but it hurt me a lot when he died. I was a fan of Owen, thought he was cool with the moves he showed off. I cried and saw the memorial, still asking myself 'Why him?'. It's been years it still hurts. RIP Owen. You are truly the best.
I was there that night I was 11 years old and I remember Owen falling and thinking it was a part of the show until I saw the King run up and I realized how serious it was. That is a night I will never forget I will always remember the sound of how hard Owen hit the ring. The crazy thing is none of us in Kemper knew how serious it was and the show just went on. Hindsight is 20/20 but they should have stopped the show.
I never donated to any other type of media before, but I would feel wrong if I didn't do it for this one Owen was a talented individual and apparently a very caring husband and father. This loss hurts me even if I didn't grow up on wrestling and became a fan only after he had already passed. RIP, King of Hearts
This was the first PPV that I ordered in my first apartment. I will never forget that day. I remember the confusion and using dial up internet to try and figure out what happened. Such a surreal memory.

I remember coming in from school the next day - first thing my mum said to me was 'Owen Hart died last night' and I was just utterly stunned. We didnt have Sky and my mum didnt watch it with me (when her friend taped it for me) or have any interest other than me liking it - but she knew who Owen was and that him and Bret were brother and how horrible it was. One of those memories thats just stuck with me

I was 16 when Owen Hart passed away. I'm now 40. I have never forgotten what happened at Kemper Arena. Every year, I pay my respects to Owen. I remember my grandmother ringing me and telling me that Owen was gone. She knew how much I loved the Hart family in Calgary. I'm going to get to Calgary in the future. Big steps for an Australian. Thank you for covering this dark day with your best ability to.
My eyes were tearing up before I even started the video. I didn't see this PPV when it happened. I didn't find out until the next night. I had spent the night with a friend who didn't watch wrestling because the school year had just ended. The decision to continue is all the evidence I ever needed to know what a horrible human being Vince McMahon is. I don't know what The Undertaker was thinking in that image, but I see a man who is in no mental state to perform a wrestling match.
From an Italian fan, thank you for having the courage of making this video because in my opinion it was necessary for many reasons, considering especially what Vince McMahon could do inside and outside the arenas (no pun intended). When we saw this show on the west coast, we had no idea what happened as we skipped the dirt sheet reports that day. It really makes me wish I had for the show actually. You did a great job covering this event and this is my contribution to the Hart Foundation for all the good memories Owen Hart gave to the community and his fellow wrestlers.
Was in tears as soon as I heard the date and was brought back to that day. Plenty of wrestling deaths have happened since but for me none hit as hard as Owen
I'll never forget I was at my locker in the hallway when a classmate of mine came up and told me "Chris did you hear that Owen Hart died at a pay per view?" I was known as the one big wresting fan in my class and I didn't believe her at first. Watching this almost 25 years later and I still have tears.

I felt the same way i was in middle school when watching this show and was heartbroken about Owen i hated that eventually watching this series we would have to relieve that pain but like the title of this series is called "reliving the war" all the trials all the losses is what made this business what it is today Continue to rest easy Owen.
I have owen harts autograph as the blue blazer everytime i look at it gives me chills or a sort of aura. Owen is greatly missed and should always be remembered.
I’m 0:50 in and my tears are already flowing. They were flowing when I was talking to a co-worker about this event and Owen himself after I saw this was uploaded. I know they won’t see this but to Oje, Athenia, Martha and everyone behind the Owen Hart Foundation…thank you for keeping your dads name alive for something he would’ve loved more than the professional wrestling business. i hated WWE fans for decades when the crowd stayed to watch WWE after Owen fell and died. it blows my mind why your father and uncle didn't take you home after this.
I can only imagine what that atmosphere was like after what happened. I can understand having nightmares after that and would understand if you never watched wrestling again
This was my first live WWF PPV I watched as a recently defected WCW fan, and I had family who were living in Kansas City this night, hearing from my cousin afterwards how completely shook the whole city was honestly, you gotta remember that kayfabe was still kind of a thing at the time and seeing how huge wrestling was then there were radio stations which talked wrestling and there was actual debate over if Owens fall and death announcement was one big storyline/swerve. Even weeks later (my Mom and I had moved there a month after the show), you had people there, online and on said radio still thinking maybe it was an angle, I think some of it was probably coping with the very real tragedy but some of it was legitimate. But watching the show that night, hearing the announcement of his fall and then his death, me and my Mom were both just stunned. Watched the rest of the show but basically zombified due to the news. One of the darkest days this fan has experienced in over thirty years as a fan (hard to say which is darkest for me personally among this, Benoit and Eddie Guerreros death). I can only imagine what was going on with the rest of the wrestlers and talents who were there and in some cases saw the fall and saw him being brought backstage. Props to JR for his professionalism while also dealing with a bucktoothed POS named Kevin Dunn in his ear nonchalantly saying "Oh yeah, he's dead, and in 5, 4, ...". Such a ripple effect from this; Owen became almost non-existent in WWE due to his wife being rightfully pissed at them for a multitude of reasons, Jarrett likely was enraged and that played a part in his very rancorous departure, Taker was pissed at the show continuing and immediately flew up to Calgary (imagine if he had decided to not come back), I think the honeymoon phase for how great WWF and Vince McMahon by proxy were ended with this and while it didn't gurt business it did put a very negative light on them. RIP Owen😔💔
Jeff Jarrett on his podcast said he never took time to deal with Owen’s death. It was years if not decades later. This along with other issues is the root of his alcoholism
This is the show I was dreading. The look on the kings face. How did this show continue. I really feel for JR being told that Owen died seconds before he had to announce it live on TV. RIP Owen, one of the greatest of all time. Thoughts and prayers for your family.
I could never afford PPVs back in the day, but you used to be able to turn to the PPV channel and, while the video was scrambled, the audio came through perfectly. When JR announced Owen's death my jaw dropped.
I've been a wrestling fan since the very first Saturday night main event. My dad woke me up and said "you gotta come see this" I graduated high school on May 23rd 99. All I could think about that whole day was I want to watch over the edge tonight but I knew it wouldn't be possible. Then that night my friend told me what happened. I was completely blown away and didn't want to believe it. I've been looking forward to this episode since the beginning of reliving the war because I knew you would do Owen justice. As someone who experienced the Attitude Era through WWE '13 and 2K16, younger me was always confused why 2K skipped out on this Austin vs Taker match during the Showcase. Years later, I learned about Owen's death and it clicked in my mind. RIP Owen, we miss you dearly.
Yeah that’s why nobody really remembers Undertaker winning the championship here. Did you know undertaker flew to Calgary to be with Bret the very next day? That’s why he wasn’t on the Raw is Owen show.
I'd never seen this ppv before this review. I didn't realise how much of the show happened *after* the accident. I can't imagine having to go out and perform in these circumstances. Hell, I can't imagine how an audience is meant to enjoy the show after what happened! There's absolutely no way it should have continued and to make that call before Owen had even been removed from the ring shows just how vile Vince McMahon has always been. The Darkside of the ring episode on this sheds light on how they cut corners on the safety and its just infuriating knowing they were warned by an expert not to use the harness they did. What happened that night was completely avoidable. Thank you for doing this review. It was clearly very difficult but its an important moment in wrestling history and people need to know what happened that night so the lessons that need to be learned are.

I remember hearing about this from my mom when she picked me up from school that following Monday. First time I realized how fragile life truly is. I wish the circumstances were different, but it does nobody any good to rehash old feelings. Rest in power, Owen!
I found out from my mom too. I was in the shower getting ready for school and she told me. I assumed it was a storyline and said something like, “I don’t think that’s real mom”, but she said, “no, it’s on the news. It’s real.” I remember I cried getting ready that morning.
I was 13 and was watching this live. Like some people at first I thought it was an angle, as the blue blazer character was comedic. But quickly realised JR wasn't himself, and seeing king serious brought it home. That second to camera from JR where announced Owens death was so sad, and wrong and tragic. It's popped into my mind probably at least once a month since, watching that. And as a kid. Even I thought the show should have ended. What were they thinking? I always respected JR as a professional and a man since that night.
I did hear something about one of the boys saying the ring had a dent in it where Owen had hit (which coincidentally was literally right next to the exact spot of the "Brood blood"), and having almost tripped because of it. I thought it was D-Lo, but he went out before Owen fell. Now I can't remember who said it. Maybe it was Jeff Jarrett.
@thisisnotachannel Apparently the turnbuckle Owen landed on was broken. Austin and Taker were told to not use that turnbuckle and as you watch their match you notice they avoid going to that area.
I knew a war vet whose PTSD was activated by a car backfiring. I'm a rape survivor whose PTSD nearly broke me when a friend tried to seduce me in exactly the way I hoped and dreamed. PTSD is like both a disease of memory and an immune response, flight or fight or freeze survival instinct kicking in to try to save you... It works better when it's simply protecting you from a sabertooth's hunting grounds.
You made the best of this show that was possible for the Reliving the War Series. In my eyes, you "had to" (of course, no one could force you) review it to give a complete picture. The tragic of this event still shows and you did a respectful review of it. Thanks for sharing this still emotional moments.
Been on this ride with you since the beginning. We knew this was coming. Coming from someone who watched it live, you could tell that things were absolute chaos backstage, especially during Jeff Jarrett's live promo.
The Rock said he wanted to run down the ring, he was looking from behind the curtain in Gorilla position, but Vince stopped everyone from running down as it could make people believe it was an angle. Also the way Bret found out was heartbreaking, he was on a flight as it happened and it was the pilot that told him, so he had to wait for the flight to end to start making calls to know what happened. Years later WWE would be in a similar situation during Raw, when King had his heart attack, they put him on a stretcher and where giving him CPR, while the show was on and you can see the EMTs working on King as matches where happening, Michael Cole was left alone to do commentary but also update the fans as it was happening, by the time Raw ended he was in the hospital in stable but delicate condition. For Vince no human life is worth more than the show.
Shane told the Locker Room in one sentence that Owen had fallen from the Ceiling and had Died. Mick Foley was the one who told everyone exactly how it happened.
I remember the night it happened like yesterday. My grandpap told me it was all part of the show (despite them adamantly telling us it was not, in fact, part of the show.) I was 8 years old and thinking my Pap was dumb for thinking it was fake. I am 32 now and I realize that my Pap knew it eas real and was trying his best to protect my innocence. Devastating every time I think about it. Thanks for toughing this one out for us.

JR deserves a lot of credit for his work on this show. He literally just watched a man die in front of him and he was still somehow able to still commentate and fill dead air. I remember being in 3rd grade when this happened.
Also Carlos Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich, who unfortunately were the first ones to be forced to announce Owen's death during the Mankind/Boss Man match.
This is for the Owen Hart Foundation as well. My dad used to be part of the ring crew for Stampede Wrestling when they did shows in my hometown. He knew all the Hart family quite well. This one always have been a rough one in my household, but you covered it with upmost respect as possible. Thank you.

The way that Jim Ross handled that situation on the fly is nothing short of impressive. I watched this live as a 9 year old kid. Now as a 33 year old gown man re-watching it, I still cant say anything other than thank you JR. You guided the entire wrestling world that night. Never forget that nobody from the WWF went with Owen to the hospital either in the ambulance or following him. Jeff Jarrett was the first guy at the hospital and he was still in his wrestling gear.

The most telling scene of this show to me is where the camera catches Undertaker looking around at the ring before Steve Austin walks down and he’s captured with a look that I can only describe as “barely collected” - and this was the guy that never breaks character for any reason. It looked like he was looking over at the turnbuckle where Owen fell. It’s a particularly hard visual to witness.

There's something very sobering about hearing JR ramble and clearly at a complete loss during the aftermath of Owen's fall. Then when King comes back and is clearly just shell-shocked from what he'd seen... One of the darkest moments in the history of the WWF for sure. I always wonder what the 2000s would've been like with Owen still around. The matches he could've had with the likes of guys like Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero...

Owen actually wrestled Angle in a dark match when Kurt was just getting started in WWE before a Heat taping a month or two before this. Course Angle was nowhere near what he'd become, but it happened. In Kurt's prime, those two coulda had some classics without a doubt.

Owen definitely would have had some classic bouts with Angle, Jericho, Benoit, and Guerrero. It would have also been great to see him reunite with Davey Boy later that year.
Even if Owen left WWE in 2001 when his contract expired, it would have been easily possible that he would have gone to work with the Jarretts in TNA, maybe even win the NWA World title once or twice.
What could have been.
I've heard he wanted to retire in 2000 anyway to spend time with his family, which if true just makes this even more tragic but alot of the dream matches wouldn't have happened anyway. M

Not only was Debra understandably distraught but Jarrett looked like he was on the verge of breaking down in tears, he looked absolutely haunted.
My brother, my dad, and I watched this live. I had just turned 18 years old. It was the last PPV we all watched together, so it would've been etched onto my mind either way... but due to the events that transpired, the entire experience has haunted me ever since. A sad day in not just wrestling history... but in human history. I wouldn't trust any other person to handle covering this event with the delicate attention that it deserves. Thanks, Ryan

I never liked Owen that much, his heel work was so great I could never shake him in my child’s mind from the nation of dumbo nation. It’s strange how our perception changes as we age. His life is a tragedy
I just caught up a few weeks ago, and yea timing man. Hella sad
I was at this show..it was sickening... I will say that I don't condemn them for continuing the show.. instead of sending everyone home filled with grief, Stone Cold hung out for what seemed like an hour, walking around the whole building, drinking beers and toasting nearly every section in the building after the end of the show... Thousands of people along with Steve Austin sticking around to pay tribute to Owen Hart the way only wrestling fans could. Nobody wanted to leave after the show, It was a strange feeling, like Owen's spirit was being held in that stadium as long as we all stayed there he was still with us.. it's certainly something I will never forget

One thing that I have always found incredible is that there is on youtube a tape of the Spanish commentators where you can hear Owen's fall and their reaction to it in real time, and Owen literally fell at the exact second that he was saying in the interview pre-tape "Why me?". That timing is beyond incredible and sad. As if he was commenting on his own death.

They couldn't have done that and stayed in business. They would have gotten sued by cable companies, pay per view outlets, and would have had to refund millions of dollars to ticket holders. Their hands were tied.
Me and a bunch of my buddies were there at Kemper Arena that night. It was a very scary thing to watch. And watching the EMTs rushing Owen out on the stretcher was very concerning considering his face appeared to us to be blue and they had his mask off... we found out after the show from our local media that he died at the hospital. We were on the aisle where they walked out and you could see the tears in Jeff Jarretts eyes as well as HHH and The Rock. It was hard to watch after the event.
The show should have been stopped immediately.
Poor Jim Ross was told about Owen's death in his earpiece and then was told "And we're live in 10...9...8..."

If I saw him fall or saw his limp lifeless body in the ring I wouldn’t be able to get it out of my mind. Jerry The King Lawler was with Owen in the ring the entire time while the EMTs were working on him. When Jerry comes back to the announce table his face said it all. He knew Owen was gone 😭💔
He told Jim Ross "He's not gonna make it" as confirmed by JR in one of a few times he's talked about this night.

@hectorlopez1069 absolutely he was one of the first few people to get someone out there to help Owen the referee in the ring Jimmy Korderas who apparently yelled at Jimmy to move on the way down because Owen didn't wanna land on Jimmy or else he would have been killed to said that he saw Owen laying there, called out to him a few times and got no response Jimmy said that's when The King started telling crew members at ringside to get the EMTs and anyone out there Jimmy heard The King say to one of them "Owen fell from the ceiling and I think he's dead. Jimmy talked about it in his book.
Not often I make donations on this site but this event left such an impression on me as a kid, my dad had this recorded on VHS and I was so confused when the incident unfolded and when my dad told me what happened I couldn't believe it, even today it feels so surreal.
It's strange to say but when I used to play WWF Attitude as a kid, I always picked Owen Hart in the Career Mode, it felt like a really cool tribute to him.

My Grandad had this on VHS for years. I watched it a few times. Never forget the camera suddenly cutting to JR after the interview.
We couldn't believe it as well, it was one of the worst days in the wrestling world.

I remember being 8 years old watching this live. One of the local bars here would show all the pay per views. The bar was full and we were all silent the whole time not knowing what was going on. Will never forget everyone completely stunned when JR announced his death. It even made the local news. Im 33 now and still remember it like yesterday.
I attended the house show the night before in Rosemont, IL along with two buddies, who I used to frequent live wrestling events with. We would always skip the later matches in order to meet the wrestlers leaving the arena and I still remember the two pictures we got of Owen. One was of him sticking his head out of the backstage curtain, where we excitedly said, "Hi Owen", and he waved to us and smiled.
We ended up outside and got a photo of Owen in a cab. Looking back at the photo of him in the cab, he seemed to have a worried look on his face. Surely this is probably coincidence as we captured a moment in time, but was still eery to look back upon. We ended up having a moment of silence in my 7th grade classroom for Owen because I and those same two friends asked the teacher to do so seeing that we found out about his death the night before. My wife and I were watching this ppv at a restaurant and bar owned by a friend of the Hart family. The place had posters and autographed pics all over the place. Owen's actual Slammy award was displayed right by the front doors. After the accident, the mood in the restaurant was so thick with tension and worry you could cut it with a knife. All the staff were out watching the many TVs in the bar area. R.I.P. Owen. 😪

They got so devastated about the news that Owen hart died tonight.
My brother and I bought most of WWF's pay per views in 98 and 99. This is one of the few we didnt buy. My dad worked third shift, so he was the way we found out Owen Hart had died before going to school Monday morning. I just remember being in a funk about it all day. I've never actually watched Over The Edge or any of the footage surrounding Owen's passing until now.
I remember that day. I was watching the PPV and when I saw Owen promo, I had a chuckle at the Hogan stuff. Then it got weird when the camera panned to the people. When they said Owen was taken to the hospital and the look of Jerry Lawler's face was sad, I was like 'He should be fine'. When they announced he was dead, I denied it was real. I thought it was just a storyline, albeit a sick one, but a storyline.
News told of Owen's death, and I had a hard time staying focus on that day. At that time, I never lost anyone, but it hurt me a lot when he died. I was a fan of Owen, thought he was cool with the moves he showed off. I cried and saw the memorial, still asking myself 'Why him?'.
It's been years it still hurts. RIP Owen. You are truly the best.
I was there that night I was 11 years old and I remember Owen falling and thinking it was a part of the show until I saw the King run up and I realized how serious it was. That is a night I will never forget I will always remember the sound of how hard Owen hit the ring. The crazy thing is none of us in Kemper knew how serious it was and the show just went on. Hindsight is 20/20 but they should have stopped the show.
Nobody in Kemper arena didn't know owen died yet because there was still no social media and smartphones.
It must have been pretty loud because of how far he fell and they had a mic 🎙️ under the ring I believe.

Owen was a talented individual and apparently a very caring husband and father. This loss hurts me even if I didn't grow up on wrestling and became a fan only after he had already passed.

This was the first PPV that I ordered in my first apartment. I will never forget that day. I remember the confusion and using dial up internet to try and figure out what happened. Such a surreal memory.

I remember coming in from school the next day - first thing my mum said to me was 'Owen Hart died last night' and I was just utterly stunned. We didnt have Sky and my mum didnt watch it with me (when her friend taped it for me) or have any interest other than me liking it - but she knew who Owen was and that him and Bret were brother and how horrible it was. One of those memories thats just stuck with me

I was 16 when Owen Hart passed away. I'm now 40. I have never forgotten what happened at Kemper Arena. Every year, I pay my respects to Owen. I remember my grandmother ringing me and telling me that Owen was gone. She knew how much I loved the Hart family in Calgary. I'm going to get to Calgary in the future. Big steps for an Australian. Thank you for covering this dark day with your best ability to.
My eyes were tearing up before I even started the video. I didn't see this PPV when it happened. I didn't find out until the next night. I had spent the night with a friend who didn't watch wrestling because the school year had just ended. The decision to continue is all the evidence I ever needed to know what a horrible human being Vince McMahon is. I don't know what The Undertaker was thinking in that image, but I see a man who is in no mental state to perform a wrestling match.
From an Italian fan, thank you for having the courage of making this video because in my opinion it was necessary for many reasons, considering especially what Vince McMahon could do inside and outside the arenas (no pun intended). I'll never forget I was at my locker in the hallway when a classmate of mine came up and told me "Chris did you hear that Owen Hart died at a pay per view?" I was known as the one big wresting fan in my class and I didn't believe her at first. Watching this almost 25 years later and I still have tears.
I had no idea Bob Holly had a move called the, “Holly-Cost.” Oh boy…

I felt the same way i was in middle school when watching this show and was heartbroken about Owen i hated that eventually watching this series we would have to relieve that pain but like the title of this series is called "reliving the war" all the trials all the losses is what made this business what it is today Continue to rest easy Owen.
I have owen harts autograph as the blue blazer everytime i look at it gives me chills or a sort of aura. Owen is greatly missed and should always be remembered.

i hated WWE fans for decades when the crowd stayed to watch WWE after Owen fell and died. it blows my mind why your father and uncle didn't take you home after this.

Did you witness the actual fall?
This was my first live WWF PPV I watched as a recently defected WCW fan, and I had family who were living in Kansas City this night, hearing from my cousin afterwards how completely shook the whole city was honestly, you gotta remember that kayfabe was still kind of a thing at the time and seeing how huge wrestling was then there were radio stations which talked wrestling and there was actual debate over if Owens fall and death announcement was one big storyline/swerve. Even weeks later (my Mom and I had moved there a month after the show), you had people there, online and on said radio still thinking maybe it was an angle, I think some of it was probably coping with the very real tragedy but some of it was legitimate.
But watching the show that night, hearing the announcement of his fall and then his death, me and my Mom were both just stunned. Watched the rest of the show but basically zombified due to the news. One of the darkest days this fan has experienced in over thirty years as a fan (hard to say which is darkest for me personally among this, Benoit and Eddie Guerreros death). I can only imagine what was going on with the rest of the wrestlers and talents who were there and in some cases saw the fall and saw him being brought backstage. Props to JR for his professionalism while also dealing with a bucktoothed POS named Kevin Dunn in his ear nonchalantly saying "Oh yeah, he's dead, and in 5, 4, ...".
Such a ripple effect from this; Owen became almost non-existent in WWE due to his wife being rightfully pissed at them for a multitude of reasons, Jarrett likely was enraged and that played a part in his very rancorous departure, Taker was pissed at the show continuing and immediately flew up to Calgary (imagine if he had decided to not come back), I think the honeymoon phase for how great WWF and Vince McMahon by proxy were ended with this and while it didn't gurt business it did put a very negative light on them.

Jeff Jarrett on his podcast said he never took time to deal with Owen’s death. It was years if not decades later. This along with other issues is the root of his alcoholism

I could never afford PPVs back in the day, but you used to be able to turn to the PPV channel and, while the video was scrambled, the audio came through perfectly. When JR announced Owen's death my jaw dropped.

I've been a wrestling fan since the very first Saturday night main event. My dad woke me up and said "you gotta come see this" I graduated high school on May 23rd 99. All I could think about that whole day was I want to watch over the edge tonight but I knew it wouldn't be possible. Then that night my friend told me what happened. I was completely blown away and didn't want to believe it. I've been looking forward to this episode since the beginning of reliving the war because I knew you would do Owen justice. Thanks for uploading this the right way.

As someone who experienced the Attitude Era through WWE '13 and 2K16, younger me was always confused why 2K skipped out on this Austin vs Taker match during the Showcase.
Years later, I learned about Owen's death and it clicked in my mind. RIP Owen, we miss you dearly.
Yeah that’s why nobody really remembers Undertaker winning the championship here. Did you know undertaker flew to Calgary to be with Bret the very next day? That’s why he wasn’t on the Raw is Owen show.
I'd never seen this ppv before this review. I didn't realise how much of the show happened *after* the accident. I can't imagine having to go out and perform in these circumstances. Hell, I can't imagine how an audience is meant to enjoy the show after what happened! There's absolutely no way it should have continued and to make that call before Owen had even been removed from the ring shows just how vile Vince McMahon has always been. The Darkside of the ring episode on this sheds light on how they cut corners on the safety and its just infuriating knowing they were warned by an expert not to use the harness they did. What happened that night was completely avoidable.
Thank you for doing this review. It was clearly very difficult but its an important moment in wrestling history and people need to know what happened that night so the lessons that need to be learned are.

I remember hearing about this from my mom when she picked me up from school that following Monday. First time I realized how fragile life truly is. I wish the circumstances were different, but it does nobody any good to rehash old feelings. Rest in power, Owen!
I found out from my mom too. I was in the shower getting ready for school and she told me. I assumed it was a storyline and said something like, “I don’t think that’s real mom”, but she said, “no, it’s on the news. It’s real.” I remember I cried getting ready that morning.

I was 13 and was watching this live. Like some people at first I thought it was an angle, as the blue blazer character was comedic. But quickly realised JR wasn't himself, and seeing king serious brought it home. That second to camera from JR where announced Owens death was so sad, and wrong and tragic. It's popped into my mind probably at least once a month since, watching that. And as a kid. Even I thought the show should have ended. What were they thinking? I always respected JR as a professional and a man since that night.
I grew up on Stampede. This broke my heart. I was feeling the dread counting down to this as well. The Harts are royalty here in Canada.

A lot of ppl thought it was Owens blood in the ring its not. The blood was from the brood on Sunday night heat
I did hear something about one of the boys saying the ring had a dent in it where Owen had hit (which coincidentally was literally right next to the exact spot of the "Brood blood"), and having almost tripped because of it.
I thought it was D-Lo, but he went out before Owen fell. Now I can't remember who said it. Maybe it was Jeff Jarrett.
@thisisnotachannel Apparently the turnbuckle Owen landed on was broken. Austin and Taker were told to not use that turnbuckle and as you watch their match you notice they avoid going to that area.

I knew a war vet whose PTSD was activated by a car backfiring.
I'm a rape survivor whose PTSD nearly broke me when a friend tried to seduce me in exactly the way I hoped and dreamed.
PTSD is like both a disease of memory and an immune response, flight or fight or freeze survival instinct kicking in to try to save you...
It works better when it's simply protecting you from a sabertooth's hunting grounds.
You made the best of this show that was possible for the Reliving the War Series. In my eyes, you "had to" (of course, no one could force you) review it to give a complete picture. The tragic of this event still shows and you did a respectful review of it. Thanks for sharing this still emotional moments.
Been on this ride with you since the beginning. We knew this was coming. Coming from someone who watched it live, you could tell that things were absolute chaos backstage, especially during Jeff Jarrett's live promo.

The Rock said he wanted to run down the ring, he was looking from behind the curtain in Gorilla position, but Vince stopped everyone from running down as it could make people believe it was an angle. Also the way Bret found out was heartbreaking, he was on a flight as it happened and it was the pilot that told him, so he had to wait for the flight to end to start making calls to know what happened.
Years later WWE would be in a similar situation during Raw, when King had his heart attack, they put him on a stretcher and where giving him CPR, while the show was on and you can see the EMTs working on King as matches where happening, Michael Cole was left alone to do commentary but also update the fans as it was happening, by the time Raw ended he was in the hospital in stable but delicate condition. For Vince no human life is worth more than the show.
Shane told the Locker Room in one sentence that Owen had fallen from the Ceiling and had Died. Mick Foley was the one who told everyone exactly how it happened.
I remember the night it happened like yesterday. My grandpap told me it was all part of the show (despite them adamantly telling us it was not, in fact, part of the show.)
I was 8 years old and thinking my Pap was dumb for thinking it was fake. I am 32 now and I realize that my Pap knew it eas real and was trying his best to protect my innocence.
