Jeff Jarrett and Mark Henry took it the hardest imo when Owen died. Jeff Jarrett on one of his podcasts still nearly cries when mentioning Owen. It’s very touching what Jeff says about Owen. Mark Henry’s poem to Owen is good as well.
Everyone in the comments is talking about the inevitable passing of Owen. But no one is mentioning Rick Rude who actually passed on April 20, 1999. 5 days before this PPV.
Nobody is dismissing the impact of Rude passing away, but Owen being an active member of the roster and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death still are shocking as it happened on a live PPV during one of the most popular eras in the history of the business. It is without a doubt the most devastating wrestling death of all-time.

The Shamrock/Taker match here is probably the most divisive match I can think of, in terms of overall reception over time; it's super "Love It or Hate It". While it is a slow match, especially for Attitude Era standards, it's also a match that can be looked at as possibly ahead of its time & a precursor to the kinds of technical matches that'd become more common in just a handful of years in WWE. I've seen people bring up how it's the first match where Taker was actually seen to scream & writhe in pain, something he was never known for, and it was interesting to see Taker actually show off what he could do, from a purely technical standpoint. However, it 100% was not something that the crowd at the time wanted to see in their wrestling during that era, but if it was something seen in the Ruthless Aggression Era on Smackdown (& with the pacing tightened up a bit) then it would have likely been called a hidden gem. I really felt like Taker simply wanted to have a super technical match with Shamrock, and that's what we got.

@@michaelsinger4638 Strangely, Trish wasn't one of them. She's defended her infamous angle with McMahon, which I thought was way worse than anything we've seen so far on RTW.
@michaelsinger4638 Maybe, but a lot of them were more than happy to pose for Playboy and do the Divas photoshoots. Debra certainly wasn't on tv for her wrestling ability. Unless she explicitly said she was uncomfortable doing it ,we shouldn't make false assumptions. Patricia Stratigeas said she approached her work like an actress playing a role, and so the things the Trish Stratus character had to do didn't bother her in the slightest.
I dread watching the rise of HHH again. Hijacking the first 25 min of each show, having the same, long, drawn out, slow paced matches and promos, and acting like he owned the belt. Yawn!
I hear so much judgment on Attitude audiences wanting to see puppies. Debra was not a wrestler. She was hired simply for her looks and to excite the heterosexual males. Her wearing a bikini is exactly what was expected of her and I’m sure she got a fat paycheck for it. The crowd chanting ‘We Want Puppies’ is like somebody telling a mechanic ‘Fix My Car’. The audience were doing exactly what they were supposed to do. How else are they gonna react to Debra? The crowd never used puppy chants for actual wrestlers like Chyna, Ivory, Luna, Jacqueline, etc. They reserved those chants for the hired totty, like Debra, BB, Trish (at first). These women were hired simply for that so there’s nothing wrong with it. Stop the unfair judging.
I was there that night! Was my first WWF show! Only 11 years old! When Kane appeared, that was the loudest fuccin explosion I think I ever heard in person. the guy is huge and to see him person really gives you scale compared to the other wrestlers! Stone Cold and Rock fight was epic. Most memorable moment was when they broke into the stands. They were like 20 feet in front of me throwing blows and random equipment. Still one of the most epic experiences as a WW fan. Good memories.
"Where to, Stephanie? HAHAHAHAA" One of my all time favorite wrestling memories. Undertaker behaving like a proper, comicbook supervillain. And this time, as a whole, is interesting. I watched each week, of course, and I was a fan of several of the big names, but seeing some of these undercard matches, I had no idea that, very soon, some of them would become big favorites of mine. Triple H, for example. I can wait to relive his ascension, into "The Cerebral Assassin".
One of the most underrated PPVs WWE produced during the Attitude Era. Rock talking trash on camera and Stone Cold gives him the double bird and the stunner on the announce table was one of the most legendary moments/spots during the Attitude era. 1997-2000 are the greatest wrestling years WWE produced.
Taker vs Shamrock was ahead of it’s time. Everyone was still expecting the attitude brawling. This technical masterpiece was great and I’m disappointed in the audience. I put it with matches like Taker vs Angle and Bret Hart vs Taker at Summerslam’97 honestly.

It was a missed opportunity for his future
Ken and HHH hated eachother. He was aleays going to leave once HHH got to the top
@@linkvagar2336 why did Ken hate HHH ?
I am always amazed me that Ken has never been back for another run.
The women back in the day knew what they signed up for so I doubt Debra was nervous to go out there looking like that.
Right on! I made a similar comment about this. What else should the audience do with Debra? She had no wrestling talent and was hired for her puppies.
Oh yeah nothing like a Sunday with a wrestling bios upload . Its a great day .
I can’t wait when he gets to Unforgiven 1999 because it’s the return of…. DAVEY BOY SMITH CHINLOCK
Props on the undermount/top mount sink question. That’s a very important point.
This was peak wrestling entertainment. Today cant compare
This Rock Vs Stone cold is a forgotten Classic absolutely loved this PPV when i was a Kid
I dread watching the rise of HHH again. Hijacking the first 25 min of each show, having the same, long, drawn out, slow paced matches and promos, and acting like he owned the belt. Yawn!
34:02 iconic does not even begin to describe this moment.
I wonder if people would have believed you if you told them that half of the competitors in the opening 6 man tag match were future world champions.
25 years later, Edge and Christian are still wrestling. Hopefully they'll team up one last time before calling it a day.
Rock vs Austin was so good. Even though in hindsight it's far from perfect this is still a classic PPV in my book.
Undertaker:….for the eventual arrival of our Hower Power.
Cameraman:……..annnnd you’re clear.
Undertaker: F*CK!!!!!!
I felt Austin vs Rock was better at Backlash 99 then at Wrestlemania even though their Mania match was good
I hear so much judgment on Attitude audiences wanting to see puppies.
In a way this PPV and the next couplr of RAWs always make me feel sad knowing what's going to come. 😢
What a time to be alive. I love the attitude era!!! 💯💯
Bob Holly is JACKED and it always impressed me.
i have to say looks like a pretty interesting wrestling match between Shamrock and Undertaker
You should count Big Shows Face and Heel turns. He's got another Heel turn coming up this year if I recall correctly
He’ll turn heel in July but face again by November
Billy Gunn's hot tag was amazing. He really is great worker
Also, I loved that Al Snow called Cole "Todd"
DAAAAAMN. Even Chyna looking amazing. This might've been my favorite year in WWF history
Facts WCW and WWF in 97 - 99 was gold I miss those years bruh
@@lo516 hell yeah
You can't make fun of undertaker saying high like "how" because you say how like "high".
The man makes a good point lmao! 😂
HHH vs. X-Pac is a great match, definitely underrated.
“The IC title had traditionally been the workhorse title”
1999: 😂
The following episode of Raw has one of my favorite Rock promos.
"Where to, Stephanie? HAHAHAHAA"
One of my all time favorite wrestling memories.
I hope you do another long term wrestling video series after reliving the war as its awesome!!
It probably took so much restraint for taker not to break out laughing after the "where too Stephanie?"
I put it with matches like Taker vs Angle and Bret Hart vs Taker at Summerslam’97 honestly.
this ppv was awesome Can't believe this happened 25-years ago this series is amazing great stuff as always.
I mean to be fair, a jug full of water is pretty heavy and blunt
It’s like getting rocked with almost 10 pounds! No joke!
Chyna: dont forget who got you over punk
X pac : Brett Harts here?
Razor got him over first
i can't believe i've never seen this ppv before! gonna have to watch it now!
I needed the perfect thing to watch before bed. Been a tough few weeks over here. Thanks for what you do.
Both this time, and last one I've seen it, the Stone Cold shovel flop is so good, I rewatched it about 30 - 40 times
I don't know why, but it looks so good, and so damn funny at the same time
Yes I definitely saw that here and didn't remember how good it looks.
Damn, I thought Owen was already the Blue Blazer by Backlash 1999... He was the Blue Blazer for less than a month?!
RIP The Rocket. They did him dirty.
Definitely one of the best main events of the year - I loves showing people who have never seen it that camera spot to get their response
You Should Do A Story On The Origins Of Faarooq And Bradshaw Getting Together
Just realized that over the edge 99 is coming soon. Watch the undertakers entrance. He is in tears over Owen’s death.
The First Ever Backlash PPV and The Final WWF In Your House
I wish wrestlingbios show undertaker stone cold patt patterson gerald brisco face reactions during the main event
😢😢😢
Those faces . I can't forget those faces . They looked like they were about to cry . Stone cold looked so angry that he threw his championship and his jacket on the floor before entering the ring
While Backlash was initially advertised as an IYH show, the branding was 100% dropped by the time it aired so St. Valentine's Day Massacre is the final IYH show.
This one's the jumping-on point for me. First PPV tape I ever owned. It helped shape my idea of pro wrestling for years, for better or worse.
It's coming, and I'm dreading it. RIP Owen.
Owen’s last WWE Pay Per View appearance 😢
Great way to start off 2024, one of my favourite PPVs from when I was a kid.
“Where to Stephanie?” 😂😂😂😈😈😈
DAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
