Víkingur Ólafsson made an unforgettable impact on the music world with the release of his first three Deutsche Grammophon albums: Philip Glass · Piano Works (2017), Johann Sebastian Bach (2018) and Debussy · Rameau (2020), all of which earned the Icelandic pianist global critical acclaim.
For his fourth DG album, Mozart & Contemporaries, set for release on 3 September 2021, the multi-award-winning Ólafsson has devised a characteristically thought-provoking programme. It features a selection of his favourite Mozart keyboard works, including the Sonata in C minor K457 and Adagio in B minor K540, together with pieces by other leading composers of the day: Haydn, C.P.E. Bach and the lesser-known Galuppi and Cimarosa.
The Mozart works are taken from the last ten years of the composer’s life, by which time, as Ólafsson explains, “Mozart was not just perfecting the Classical tradition but subtly subverting it … the shadows are darker, the nuances and ambiguities more profound.”

Concerning the Mozart D-minor Fantasie as "one of darkest peices in all of Mozart," this again reveals something about the D-minor's intrinsicIf starkness. There is the famous scene the the comedy "This is Spinal Tap" where the heavy-metal guitarist sits at the piano and share is secret composition in D-minor, "The saddest of all keys. Makes people weep instantly
I see a color for each note, and over the years I began to realize it was completely spectral. C (robust and weighty) is Red, D is orange, E (bright, but flashy and fleeting) is a Yellow. F an F# are greens (Beethoven's "Pastoral Sympony in F"). Etc. etc.
But, this is very interesting, and I simply have to share this. A D-major, joyous key (Beethoven's "Ode to Joy," Symphony no 9), when in the minor, the joy, it strangely becomes tragedy. And in the minor mode, to me, the bright once orange becomes a ghoulish, Halloween Jack-O-Lanteriin hue (Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D-minor).
Lovely talk and performance! Thank you, Vikingur!

I like that idea how the d minor piece is like an improvisation just flowing from somewhere, and the way you illustrated that made it so clear. Very cool!

I used to play this piece thousand times since when I was very little and I hated the piano a lot for a very long time. Apparently the piece I played was not K 397 Fantasia D minor but all the discontent of my life :)
I love your phrasing of the beginning : a big legato with all colors of spectrum in it!Then everything goes back to vulnerability and sobbing!
I have to play it again to reevaluate it !

Is the piano of the pianist "Víkingur Ólafsson" something else?
I've heard a lot of piano playing by now, but it sounds really different.
    what maker it is...
Anyway, you are a special artist.
    something is another world.
    It makes me focus.🥰

It's one of the 2 (I think) Grand Steinways in Harpa music Hall (Reykjavík). I think he plays part in selecting them. They dont sound exactly like they do on the recording so some of it is just because of the sound engineering.
