To be able to play well, just one piece of Bach would be a life not wasted.
I'm in awe of how his heart and fingers know the path and follow it boldly, mindfully, carefully.
After the din of centuries, after the dust of history, after the banality of us all there will remain the genius of Bach. Would that anyone of us could have achieved in a lifetime what Bach achieved in a day.

Absolute clarity of idea and execution: nothing can touch Vikingur at the moment as a Bach interpreter.
I always thought Glenn was the ultimate. Now I hear this: Vikingur is his successor. I am flabbergasted! But in the end it is the genius of JS Bach!!
Vikingur could play 'Chopsticks' and it would sound heavenly! He is a fine Bach interpreter, as his version of the Goldberg Variations shows. He comes across as a thoroughly nice guy as well. Bravissimo!

I don't usually listen to piano music, being a pianist myself, but this is different. He,like Gould,transcends the instrument so all we hear is the music in its purest intention and expression. Amazing in other words

I wonder if this performance is perhaps how Bach might have played it.....the music is both human and God like.

Without any doubt, Gould has found an heir in this pianist. Most beautiful interpretation since the master.
What is so fun about Bach is that he always inspires new interpreters to play him the best they can. No offend in this, and we listeners have the benefit to listen to all attempts. What makes me so glad now is this Islander Vikingur Ólafsson. As I understand, he is one of the best these times to play Bach on a piano. I think he needs attention, but a recommendation not to think so much about Glenn Gould. So forget Glenn and play it the way you want, Vikingur!
I newly heard him at Berwald Hall, Stockholm, in a Mozart program. But the encore was Bach, Organ sonata no 4 for piano. Guess if this was popular among the audience?
limpid clarity with a quiet lyrical passion - that is ---Bach.
Massive, huge talent.
It was only yesterday that I heard this pianist on the radio. I was knocked out, so have now found all Vikingur's clips on RUclips. The boy is sensational. I have known these variations for fifty years and used to attempt them myself. In this performance, the ornamention, the range of colours done only by fingers and the range done by pedalling, his voicing, his singing tone, his contrapuntal thinking. Since Gould & Tureck (in their different ways) no pianist has so thrilled me in Bach as V Olafsson.
He is a phenomenon in the musical world. An interpreter of Bach with so interesting musical ideas and a faultless technique to realize them is something extraordinary.
Olafsson is grandiose! But listen to Igor Levit's Goldberg Variationen, too.
Hardly a boy - he is 35!
But I agree he is sensational. The most limpid Bach playing since Dinu Lipatti.
Yeah he is really amazing. The number of colors he brings into his play... I think I feel it's sometimes a bit "superficial" but it's probably at least 50% me who wasn't even able to imagine this range of playing was possible ^^

Superb Bach playing, taking the listener on an emotional journey through to final peace and serenity. This performance shows how the piano can reveal gems of musical detail that are impossible on the harpsichord ...
This is wonderful. In some ways it's even better than the album version. So much to love here, not the least of which is that when he reprises the Aria after the last variation he plays it "in the distance" as if it's a memory of the Aria. To my ears, Víkingur Ólafsson's translations of Bach to the piano are among the best I've ever heard.

Bravo!!! All that I consider is essential in an Bach interpretation is there. Also the diminuendos and the rubatos. In these italian inspired variations I can smell the genious of a real artist, Vikingur Ólafsson.

I heard Vikingur play a Bach Partita in the cloisters of the Abbeye of Silvocaine at La Roque D'Antheron in 2017 and it was clear then we were in the presence of a Bach pianist of unerring instincts and taste, not to mention one possessing seemingly flawless virtuosity.
