    Got mine today and she's lovely! Think it's an older version as it has tender pick ups and the less modern coupling.
    Fun fact about your personal 9F, 92214 at GCR, she carried Evening Star's number and name plate for a special event. I'd bet that's when she was painted into Brunswick Green. Went to see her at GCR for the Autumn Steam Gala and she was impressive sight.

    Well that was very generous of Hornby being attentive by putting some miniscule details on the custom built then just only removing the nameplate and the renumbering .

    Our last steamer was built in 1959; a class 375 No.1032 (No.1031 was preserved). The 375s were small 2-6-2 tank-engines, made for branch-line mix-traffic service. Total of 596 were made between 1907-1959 in 10 terms, so they were very popular and common locos, and around a dozen of them still exists.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Oh right - I always thought it was the evening star - most sources claim that too - I'd love to know which one it really was!

      In Britain it was, the way i know too, but in my country it was a "MÁV class 375".

    In America, not many vendors sell Hornby, let alone, many British-born engines. I wish there were more shops and options available. I would love to get my hands on a few locos, like the J52, an LNER A3, and even a BR 9F like you have here. Absolutely beautiful

    The original 9f was a Triang-Hornby model from the early 1960’s. It didn’t have separate handrails and was tender drive, but still a big advance on all previous Triang models. This Railroad version will be the same basic moulding, but up-dated with separate handrails etc. Testimony to the brilliance of that first 9f some 50 years ago.

    Great vid, the first model that I got from hornby happened to be the 40th anniversary version of evening star and it has yet to disappoint me. It was able to pull at least over 19 wagons one loaded with 13 roller bearing parts and the some others filled with stone, dirt and or other objects and yet pulled with ease till it reached the steep hill I have on my layout.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

    Brilliant, Sam (as always). I am so going to buy one of these. Your reviews are definitely the best, and are nearly as good as going into a shop and physically handling the models myself. A god-send for me living in foreign parts with no access to shops that deal in 00 gauge.

  • @theonemasterwarhero
    @theonemasterwarhero 7 лет назад +4

    Lol I bought a 2nd one of these some weeks ago to keep as evening star...only to notice some days later that the motion rods were put on the wrong way round (brand new)...but after removing them and putting them on correctly it was perfect!...and it's now dcc fitted but wow what a hard time it was fitting the decoder with such little room in the boiler using R8249...other than that I really love the loco and it makes a lovely addition to the 9fs...if you can get the early versions like r2880 and cock o the north 9f with some modifying on the black tender you could very well swap the bodies over to get desired look or more modern loco and chassis that uses 5 pole motor!
    Hey Sam would you plan on reviewing the class 20 tts - R3394tts?...its a brilliant loco for sound functions and a pretty nice runner...even if you aren't a big fan of diesels you can't help but love the start up and shut down sounds. :)

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Really?! Blimey that is really bad... but not surprising - Hornby's quality control has been questionable lately ;)
      Yeah that's an issue I often have too - they don't seem to consider leaving enough space for decoders a lot of the time, haha!
      Yeah that would be a good one to review - I'd never pay that price though - it's just an old Lima class 20 with a new motor and sound... that's all it is! ;D
      Cheers mate,
      Sam :)

    • @theonemasterwarhero
      @theonemasterwarhero 7 лет назад

      Sam'sTrains yeah they don't leave much room in the boiler for a decoder...they waste room with that block the plug unit sits on and the motor and retainers are plenty weight...the class 20 even though it's lima compatible tooling it's actually far superior to the lima models by a long shot so its well worth it...the early model which hornby did which is dcc ready but quite rare now was very good...its basically what a lima should of been with a great motor and better pick ups with a plug for a chip...the plus side since it's lima tooling is most lima bodies will fit on the hornby chassis same goes for some bits and parts! :)
      I picked mine up for £93 from Hattons if you hold out long enough you might very well catch it for £80 or £70...cause ive seen quite a few tts crosti's for around £99 before...but I assure it's no lima yes it has very much the same tooling but that's a good thing in a way cause it makes it more compatible with early models and yet still looks and runs good enough to work with the New!

    the 9F is a good BR steam engine, even though the engine was built for freight use, it also proved it's worthiness in passenger trains and is able to do flat out 90mph, even though it's small wheels were only designed for freight use. The BR green livery normally used for BR locos hauling passenger trains was also used on the 9F, even though it was a freight engine. on the hornby version, it's also a good loco with a great amount of power, just like the prototype.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah they are great aren't they? It must have been fantastic (and slightly scary) to have travelled behind one during BR! Apparently it was only Evening star that had the BR green though, all the others were plain black as far as I know!

      @SamsTrains  6 лет назад

      That's great to hear mate - yeah definitely, these are very good! The BR black versions are a tad older, and they do have trouble with Mazak rot, particularly with the tenders. I would suggest going for the later Franco-crosti version if you'd like one in BR black! :D

    Thanks again Sam enjoyed the video I just bought the Evening Star today great locomotive and because I haven't a lot of room for a large layout this locomotive runs perfectly on 2nd Radious and just the same as yours railroad edition I used to work on KWVR and I drove not a 9f but something smaller thanks again Sam

      Yeah they do - I'd love to get one weathered one day!
      I've never actually seen a Bachmann one in the flesh - but in general this Hornby one runs better than most Bachmann locos - it's probably not as detailed though, but it's also much cheaper!

    Very nice Sam, can't fault the 9F. Loved the cam truck shots and the sneaky Bullman at 18.01. also Bullman becomes Pullman in the end credits. Was the odd man out an LMS 8F, all the others being BR? ...David.

    Cracking model (s). Personally I think moulded detail is lost in black - green accentuates it, particularily on the Evening Star. All you need now is a oo gauge model of yourself at the helm. (Glad I'm not the only one who uses the wrong controller). Alan.

    During the video, you mentioned the number of coaches pulled by the models. Whenever I see a video of model trains, especially OO gauge, I try to count the number of coaches pulled by each engine. However, the guys who record these videos seem to be more interested in the engines than the coaches. It is always nice to be able to count a complete rake of coaches pulled by a particular engine. Or am I just sad, lol???

    Nice and channel 5 milkshake employees might call the Evening Star as Murdoch's sister or Brother due to both being based on BR 9f class. Same can be said in the BR eastern region LNER east cost main line since Flying Scotsman and Gordon are brothers due to Gordon being the prototype for the Flying Scotsman with them replacing Stirling Single Emily on East Coast main line express.

    Sam,
    I've I've been thinking of buying a second loco for my own railroad. I have a budget of £60 and I wanted a steam loco with a reasonable amount of detail for the price. What would you recommend?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад +1

      Hi! Thanks a lot for the comment - obviously I'd recommend something from the Hornby railroad range, so my best recommendation is the railroad hall, here's the link:
      www.hattons.co.uk/164412/Hornby_R3499_Class_49xx_4_6_0_6947_Helmingham_Hall_in_BR_Green_with_late_crest_Railroad_Rang/StockDetail.aspx
      It's only £57, and it has amazing levels of detail!
      The railroad compound is a bargain too, at £45!
      www.hattons.co.uk/69515/Hornby_R3276_Class_4P_Compound_4_4_0_1072_in_LMS_Black_with_Fowler_tender_Railroad_range/StockDetail.aspx

  • @jerryallen34
    @jerryallen34 7 лет назад

    Not boring. I'm after one but only with tender pick ups. A move back to the dark ages without them and can't believe the manufacturers are doing it. A little bit of dirt or carpet fluff and they are useless. Cheers Jerry

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Thanks very much Jerry, much appreciated mate! Yeah that's true, I much prefer locos with tender pickups - though I must admit this runs perfectly (even over express points) without them! The version with tender pickups had many many problems - the material used to cast the chassis tended to warp, and even crumble - meaning that the wheels would seize up, or that the whole thing would just fall to pieces when trying to remove the body! So while tender pick-ups are certainly preferable, I wouldn't recommend the older version, for those reasons.
      All the best,
      Sam :)
