You should try having a go at a custom Sixteen or Wilbert. Glad to give you any tips on paining, weathering and acquiring a face if you’d like.
I've always loved j94 thanks for the vids.
Me too mate! My pleasure, glad you like them :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love these engines I recently bought my fourth one.
They have never failed me
Blimey, it must be great to have four!! They are indeed very reliable! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video Sam, I do love Hornby’s J94! I got one of the newest ones earlier this year but sadly it hasn’t been updated with a DCC socket or NEM couplings, which is a shame. That said, I have ended up with several of these over the years since (like you) I’ve found them to be fantastic runners. Even better I remember being able to buy most of mine for around £40 brand new about 10 years ago which seemed like a bargain even back then!
One of mine is a bit noisy but the rest of them are silent so must just be luck of the draw on that front. Additionally, while the Early BR Black version doesn’t have any paint in the cab, I’ve found many of the others do. The ones that do have painted cabs look great, no idea why they didn’t bother to do it on every version.
Thanks a lot mate - me too - it's superb! That is a shame - I wish they'd produce a brand new version - I'm sure it'd go down well!! Glad to hear your other ones are a bit quieter too! Very interesting about the cab too - I didn't know that!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the LNER version of this beauty. it was my first Non-Railroad locomotive, but the version I have has metal safety valves and whistles. She does run like a dream and is hands-down the strongest engine I own. Then again, I only own small tank engines and pre 1990 tender driven locos. Absolutely lovely things these J94s.
Ooh very nice - yes they are excellent! That's very interesting - is it a Hornby one too?? Very unusual!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yes, it is the Horny version! On second notice mine also has a smaller bunker, which means it is a 1945/48 version.
Sam, DCC ready does not mean that the loco has to have a DCC interface. DCC Ready only means that the motor is insulated and could be easily hardwired. I actually did one a few years ago with a Hornby chip, but any reasonably sized DCC chip can be fitted. You'll only need to solder 4 wires (Red, Black, Orange & Grey) and it should run fine.
No, DCC ready means that a DCC socket is fitted inside a locomotive - it's not DCC ready unless it has a socket. DCC compatible means there is no socket, but that it is possible to wire a decoder if required! Yes it's reasonably nice and easy to chip a loco like this! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review Sam I always liked the J94s they were always so cool looking
Thanks Daniel - I agree, they are very cool looking! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
love a good Hunslet austerity! probably my favourite steam loco.
I have the dapol version myself, and the buffers are in fact sprung.
from what I've seen of the more recent versions they now have painted cab detail and whistles.
the solid chunky smokebox dart still lets it down a bit though.
Me too - they are excellent things! Blimey - I'm surprised that they were even sprung back then!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yet again a lovely video thanks for uploading
Thank you Ollie, really glad you liked it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice review. I got my br saddle tank for £50 like new last year. Very good runner, and detail issues aside I think it's one of my best steam 0-6-0s.
Blimey that's a great price - much better value that way!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I rode in a train pulled by one of these on the Isle Of Wight Steam Railway, a few years ago. It's a nice looking beast.
Oh very cool - they are lovely aren't they? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Woah! That slow speed/performance was incredible!!!!!!!
I know!! It's literally the best I've ever seen, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Even though they never appeared in the television series, Wilbert and 16 from the Railway Series are actually based on a Class J94
Yeah I've heard about that!! That's very cool!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have a 0-6-0ST similar to the J94. It is the Bachmann Junior 0-6-0ST no.8 in BR lined Black with the the early crest.
Oh yeah!! Those do look a little like the J94! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the exact same model. Just converted it to DCC. It took hours and hours to workout where to run the wires from the pickups and put a decoder in the cab.(had to drill thru cab floor and cab firebox). Mine makes a terrible racket when running and I’ve tried oiling it but not much difference. It is from 2003 after all but it’s strong as as ox with the huge weights in it.
That sounds good Alan - sorry to hear it was such an ordeal, but at least you know what you're doing now! Yeah mines pretty loud - but can't fault the way it runs!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, love the vintage ones (Like me) had one given to me gave it a service and run fine ,very enjoyable many thanks , All the Best Brian 🤗
haha I'm sure that's not true Brian! Yes very lovely runners these! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
I got mine in United Steel Company maroon. Which is a lovely colour.
That does sound lovely Nathan! :D
I have just purchased one of these from hattons it is in burgundy I am very much looking forward to its arrival I have got the new model great review
Very nice Robert - really hope you enjoy it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I grew up visiting a heritage railway near me called the Gwilli Railway that had a couple of these with different colours and names. I hope to get an up to date model of one because of their importance in my childhood
Ahh that sounds lovely - I think I may have heard of that one!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, another great video, nice to see an engine class I've grown up with and see alot. Just wondering if you anyone could use the mechanism and chassis of the hornby model and then use the detailed body of the djm, to make a fitting loco that works and looks good? I dont know whether its completely possible but it would be cool to see someone try and make a far superior model. Thanks again, Oskar.
Thanks a lot Oskar - I'm sure that could be a possibility with some modification - although I've never been able to remove the body on mine, haha! xD
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, great review! These and the Dapol/Hornby Terrier have the "chocolate box" motor, which are desgined for shunting, great and slow speeds but nosiy at higher speeds.
Thanks very much Benjamin - they certainly are very impressive - probably the best 0-6-0T I've got!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam, any chance of you making a servicing video of this loco like you did for the DJM one? As you said, the mechanism is hard to access and the service sheet Hornby makes is dreadful!
Like the shape and proportion of theJ94 , I think it has a modern , clean look to it . Wales UK
Great video Sam looks like a great model I've recently purchased an old hornby dublo duchess of anthill that has been converted to two rail
Thanks very much David! Ooh that sounds good - I bet it's pretty heavy ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very informative review, well done Sam!
Thanks a lot Emma - appreciate it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Builders plate says that this one was built by Andrew Barclay. This is because the War Department commissioned a number of companies to build the locomotive to the Hunslet's design.
That's very interesting - I hadn't realised that, thanks for pointing that out!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Even the newest (2020) ones don't have DCC sockets. To fit a chip you need to saw a bit off the tank weight to make room for it then hard wire. Not difficult- so far I think I've done eleven.... and three of these are now sound fitted by Digitrains.
Sprung buffers were fitted from Dapol's originals in 1984. Hornby's are quieter and the handrails were corrected. I have a 1984 original still running and DCC fitted. Hornby's latest aren't any different to their first other than livery.
Hi Sam
I love the j94s
How are you
What adams radial would you recommend
Hey Lewis! I love them too! I'm great thanks, how are you?
Sadly I can't recommend the Oxford one, so I'd go for Hornby by default - though I've never tried that version!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video keep up the great work sam!
Thanks so much Zain! :D
Nice train. I wonder what other colors they come in?
Just bought the red steel version can’t wait to get it
Ooh cool! Hope you really enjoy it mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains arrived today can’t wait to test it later
Ah a J94 I do indeed like it's class as a industrial engine and it's shape for how it was made
Me too!! I really like the shape too!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains no problem Sam
I have a dapol version of this in that livery there's some minor differences (the hand rails are silver) and a new hornby one in a NCB livery. Lovely little models
Ahh duly noted, thanks for letting me know the differences!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice, Wish they made 3806 "Wilbert" at the dean forest railway, Would have been a nice tribute to the reverend
Ooh yeah I remember him! It would have been nice to see him! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
As always enjoy your videos always informative and helps people like myself on making a decision on what to buy but please please can we have some diesel locomotive reviews as not all of us just model on steam years
Thanks very much Steve - and yes I'll do more Diesels - I do try to show a few from time to time! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I don't have that much knowledge on both trains, but what is the difference between the Hunslet austerity and J94?, Were they just rebranded or were they modified, i really wanna know the difference between these two
Not much. The J94 was just a class name given to Austerities that were transferred to LNER after the end of WII.
Hey Sam, I've noticed a problem with my hornby j94.
The center wheel set has been making a horrendous clicking sound and kicking up every now and then,
I believe this may be due to a thin plate attached to the axle, but I'm not sure.
Do you have any advice?
It could be yeah - there's a copper strip on the inside that's supposed to act as a spring - has this become misaligned? You'd have to remove all the base screws, and then the base itself to check!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I've removed the plate, which seemed to fix the problem! Thanks Sam!
I have the United Steel Company version of this model, which has a very smart looking livery. I didn't realise it was based on such an old model but runs well none the less. They are a bit noisy at higher speeds but are geared for slow speed running so is to be expected, the instructions do note this and don't recommend running them fast. There are still no NEM couplings or DCC sockets and no detail pack but at £60 new I'm happy with it. One down side is they are a pain to put back together if you remove the body.
Ahh that does sound lovely Rob! I didn't realise until recently either - I was surprised too!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Dapol versions are 3 pole motors and the hornby ones are 5 pole. Pretty sure all the details are the same throughout its production the later hornby ones may have finer handrails and crisper liveries but the spung buffers have always been a feature. If you want can post to your Facebook page some photos of an early dapol one (possibly the first version) with a later Hornby one.
Hey! I'm fairly sure none of the Hornby ones have 5-pole motors - they run on the type 7, which is 3 pole! Mine doesn't have the 5 pole anyway! Yeah sure, that'd be great! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Not a bad loco Sam, and more suited for the beginner perhaps...Another very comprehensive Review.
Thanks very much Bob - yeah I agree, this would be good for a beginner! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think a couple of figures would look nice inside the cab ..... I'm looking to get some for my 0-6-0 Austerity, so could you recommend any - or maybe even review some and have them in situ ? .... Thanks Sam, looking forward to your reply.
That's certainly true - I wonder whether the new Hornby models came with any?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cool Pretty Soon I’m Gonna Have A Railway Like This! 😄
That's awesome - good luck with the railway!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great review Sam!
Thank you!! :D
Is the theme 0-6-0 tank engines?
Great video Sam! the j94 is one of my favourite 0-6-0st.
Great review, Sam. Well done.
Thanks very much Jacob! :D
hi sam great video even though im a proppa deisel enthusiast i do like most steamies as well this j94 is lovely and if i can i will pick one up thanks for the fair review : )
Thanks a lot mate - glad you didn't mind this one!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow! great video as always. i've always liked the J94! and despite it being from the 80's it's still quite the pretty locomotive, and that crawling speed is nearly the best i've ever seen i think! great review overall! By the way, i'm sorry tp bother about this again, but we've talked about Marklin before right? so marklin also owns a branch that's called Trix, and they produce the same great stuff only it's compatible with Hornby's DC rails and controllers, just thought that that might be handier to look in to than Marklins AC stuff. have a great evening!
Thanks very much Jimi - I agree, definitely a very pretty engine, and the performance is still second-to-none! Yeah I've heard of Trix - I would love to try one of their engines some time! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love these J94’s
Me tooo!! :D
I now have a dapol one with its original box 😁. I think I might replace it’s wheels with hornby ones though.
Very nice! Yeah that sounds like it could be a good idea - good luck!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam after watching this video i had a look on Ebay for a j94. I managed to get a perfect condition war department liveried dapol J94 and i can confirm the buffers are sprung on this model
That's brilliant George - glad you got one too, and it's quite impressive that the original buffers were sprung! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains yeah it was very impressive the handrails are also metal. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment and keep up the great videos
Well done on this review Sam! :D
Thank you Kameron! :D
Also to add to the review Sam, the Hornby Austerity can come with DCC thankfully, a very good little model.
Yeah! I have seen a few people chip them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Bought myself a mint Hornby J94 same version as yours because of this review. 40 quid off eBay bargain. Great review
That's brilliant Dan, really hope you enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Hi Sam, has this loco for 2 months now and absolutely love it. Wondered if you could do a comparison to the current ones Hornby has out. The J94 is my favourite loco of all time :)
I actually got the hornby j94 for my birthday last October. It was actually the one that is preserved on the Midland Railway Centre
Was certainly more modern from what i could tell
Mine has DCC
Oh very nice - glad to hear they finally updated them for DCC then! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Well i thought it did have dcc because I haven't run her in a while, but i was wrong. Thing is i am rather astute so i don't know why i thought it did
This is a great engine I really like the osterity tanks and the mechanism is the most shocking part.
This was a great video.
Thanks very much mate - me too, they're great! Yep the mechanism is pretty dated, but it sure works well!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The model hasn't changed one bit since it first came out it had sprung buffers even then I know this as I have an original one and I know a few people who worked at dapol at the time one of which is my clubs chairman and no the new ones are not DCC and the couplings are the same.
Great video as always
Blimey really?! I'm amazed this had sprung buffers in the 1980s!! Thanks a lot for the info!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I love the J94 it is one of my favourite steam locos!
I was thinking about getting a Bachmann class 24 for my layout because you can get them for £60 second hand on hattons!
I was wondering if you have any class 24s,25s,26s, or anything similar that you could review
If not it is fine
Thanks!
Ahh that sounds good mate- blimey that's pretty good for £60! Yeah I do have a Bachmann class 25 I'm yet to review - I'll get to that soon! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You should drive them they are an absolute beast!
I'm thinking about starting my first ever model railway have you got any tips and tricks?
That's great to hear! Yeah check out my video called Getting Started With Train Sets and Model Railways - that has all of my tips and tricks! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant review Sam really good video.
Thanks very much Arthur, appreciate it mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Class J94 are fantastic steam locomotive and the design
I agree - they are lovely things! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
If you added crew, you probably wouldn't notice the sparse cab. There are tricks you can do to non-NEM pocketed stock if you decided to, for example, fit Kadees.
Yeah that's true - and good idea with the Kadees! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It's just a little saddle tank. Prretty nice!
Yes indeed! Glad you liked it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have a question, do most Hornby engines run on standard Bachman EZ track, Witch is 18 degrees ?
Yeah they should do Logan, with no problems! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Thank you so much Sam !
The theme is 0-6-0 wheel arrangement. The odd one out is the E4 Tank Engine on the turntable, because she's an 0-6-2.
Correct Kelly! Very well spotted - and yes, it was the E4! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I saw a 0-6-0 great western #2717 and I don't remember a review on it so if we can see it in the future that would be great!
Hey I think I did do a video on that one not too long ago!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The model in question has the extended coal bunker for extra capacity, hence the small square windows ..... I've not seen any of these on film - or in preservation, so I'm not really sure if this was prototypical and why Hornby decided to opt for this variant ?
Duly noted Daniel, thanks a lot for the info! No idea really - perhaps there were different variants on offer?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah i work with two off these on a railway and neither use the extended bunker and ive never seen a picture of one with that bunker perhaps in there prime but certainly now there arent many with this bunker
I wish I had the j94 it looks awesome
Yeah these Hornby ones are decent - I can recommend them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Again a great locomotive! Thank you for looking at my page!❤️🤗
I love your layout to!
Greet
Xander
My pleasure Xander, keep up the great work mate!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cool love it I have a LNER loco call salmon trout. It is a A1 Pacific one of the Brothers of the flying Scottman.
haha salmon trout?!?! That's a very funny name!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
J94 was cheaper to produce than the Jinty and was virtually a standard design by Hunslet. Riddles only made minor alterations to the design.
Duly noted Don, thanks for the info!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam looking majestic as always
haha thank you!! Always the aim, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It looks like the model used for Percy by the Rev. W. Awdry for his layout.
Yes John, not too far off! :D
another austerity saddletank with character....thats why i got mine....yes, a bit dated but not too bad...i like it....and hey...it's from hunslet in Leeds....I used to have friends in the Leeds model railway society which still worked at Hunslets....bach in the eighties....:-)...time flies...
Thanks mate, yeah overall not bad at all - great runner at least! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i own 2 of these locos cant fault theme apart from the noise but prefer these over the DJ model any day after borrowing a friends. one of the best shunters I own apart from the peckett and andrew barklay
Thanks Scott - I'd agree, and I do prefer them over the DJM version too!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam a video has been released of the Big Boy moving under her own power and it’s amazing
Oh wow, I'll definitely have to look that up!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice video Sam. Have you considered comparing the J94’s side by side? Might be an interesting watch. I also wonder if that DJM J94 has a bad motor, though I’m sure you know better.
Thanks very much Patrick! Yeah I did a bit of that during the J94 video - there was quite a few comparison shots! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
70 Hunslets are still around ethier running or static. 2 of them are J94s these being No. 68077 and 68078 while 2 others being Hunslets were modified into Thomas and Friends characters. Hunslet No. 2890 "Douglas" is a modified Hundslet/J94 and he runs as a 0-6-0 tender engine and the reason why he's Douglas was for a Day Out with Thomas event on the Mid Hants Railway. Douglas still runs but he works I think on the Mid Landcaster Railway doing passenger work. For Thomas well just for DOWT events on his railway.
Ahh blimey, I didn't know there were as many as that! Thanks very much for the info!
Cheers,
Sam :)
A very nice j94 from Hornby.
Thanks Marco! :D
Decent engine, the sort of thing that would appeal to me. I would paint in the cab detail, black the axel ends and that would 'set higher standards'.
haha absolutely - if you did that, it'd be better than the DJM in nearly all aspects!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Now you can review the EFE rail J94
haha I don't think so - not until they get seriously reduced!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The J94 from Hornby performs better on a pulsed controller such Gaugemaster or on a PWM controller. They do run well under DCC but are a bit fiddly to convert as you have to break out the soldering iron and hard wire it yourself.
Was the odd one out the E4? As far as I could tell all others were 0-6-0s and that one is an 0-6-2.
Thanks a lot for this Martin - yeah that would be a little fiddly, but it's all quite easy to access! And yes - it was the E4!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains - You've got the sort of collection I'd love to have myself. I'll get there one day.
Excellent review of the Hornby J94 Sam 👍😉
I had to agree with you that the DJ Model was not the highest of it power & detail and I would like to get one if Hornby reintroduce the Class with a much better detail than what DJ Models did.
If I get a J94 model I will get one from the Hornby, but I rather go for DJ Models as it got a bit of nice detail, However it not that much as perfect like it not powerful to hauled more freight wagons.
Have you seen any videos on RUclips of the return to steam of Union Pacific Big Boy 4014?
Thanks very much Joe! I agree - it'd be great if Hornby had a go at doing it properly! :D
I haven't seen any clips yet - are there any?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The buffers on the original Dapol were sprung.
Blimey that's very impressive - can't have been many sprung buffers about in those days!
Great loco I did enjoy that, was the theme tank engines?
Well done Sam 👍
Thanks very much George - it was 0-6-0s yeah! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You deserve way more subs
Ahh thanks so much - I'm more than happy with how many I have now though!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Could you do a review on the Artitec NS 3737? (dutch steam loco)
That sounds fantastic Keegan - I'll have to look into that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
¡Very nice engine Sam! Your videos are amazing and you really deserve more subscribers :D btw i have an idea ¿what if you make a video about a compilation of fails or bloopers while filming videos?
Thanks so much Freddy, that's really kind of you to say! To be honest, my bloopers are never funny (though sometimes rude!) otherwise I might do that!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
another one of these, there nice loco the kinda loco you buy if you've gotten used to smokey joe model's
haha that's true!! Thanks for the comment mate,
Sam :)
Triang made a saddle tank 0-6-0 loco back in the 60''s. I klnow my brother in the UK has it, but I cannot remember it'''s number or Catalogue number. We have always called it smelly, as when it was running it had a strong odour. Martin (Thailand)
Yes they did indeed Martin - I have one in fact - they're lovely little things! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
have you been to quainton riway and can you do a fan meet up there
I've never been - it sounds awesome though! I don't think I'd be brave enough to do a meet up, lol! xD
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I hope I can get one of these
I can certainly recommend them, for the right price! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
super video
Thanks a lot mate!! :D
I agree you should do more vintage locos
More on the way soon!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The LBSC E4 is the odd one out. Theme is 060 but E4 is an 062
Very well spotted - that's right!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I very nearly got Hornby J94 Number 22 because I had seen the real loco at the Nene Valley Railway but the guy in the model shop told me not to bother as they had sent so many back. Shame, it would have been a nice loco for the collection.
Cool I have 22 I plan to dcc chip her maybe get sound
Oh really?? I'm surprised to hear that about the Hornby ones - they usually seem good and reliable!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I can't speak from experience, just what I was told by the guy in the model shop. It's a pity, really wanted Number 22 on the layout.
Are the J94s saddle tanks?
Yes they are! :D
that model looks good
Thank you!! :D
Hi Sam
Imagine a Hatton's version of the J94! It would be great if it was up to hattons usual standard!
My word - if they did it to their usual standard, it'd beat both of these hands down - and I bet it'd be no more expensive either!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love my tank engines.....I have this one and has never let me down....
Me too!! Mine's never let me down either! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Theme is 0-6-0 tank engines and odd one out is the 0-4-4 on the turntable
Very well spotted - and yes, it was the E4!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
