About Game
Shenmue (シェンムー 一章 横須賀 Shenmū Isshō: Yokosuka?, "Shenmue Chapter 1: Yokosuka") is an open-world action-adventure video game developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega for the Dreamcast on 29 December 1999 in Japan and late 2000 in other territories. Directed, written and produced by Yu Suzuki, it is the first game in the Shenmue series, which Suzuki plans to span at least four games.
Shenmue consists of open-world 3D environments interspersed with brawler battles and quick time events. The game's level of detail was considered unprecedented at the time, including a day-and-night system, variable weather effects, non-player characters with daily schedules, numerous interactive objects, and various minigames. The player controls martial artist Ryo Hazuki as he sets out in revenge for the murder of his father in 1980s Yokosuka, Japan.
After developing several successful Sega arcade games, including Hang-On (1985), Out Run (1986) and Virtua Fighter (1993), Suzuki wanted to create a longer game experience. AM2 began work on a role-playing game for the Sega Saturn set in the Virtua Fighter world. In 1997, development moved to the Dreamcast and the Virtua Fighter connection was dropped. Shenmue became the most expensive video game ever developed at the time, with an estimated production and marketing cost of $47 to $70 million USD, though some of the development also covered Shenmue II (2001).
Shenmue received mostly positive reviews; critics praised its graphics, soundtrack, realism and ambition, but criticized its slow pace and voice acting. Though its focus on realism and mundane details divided players, it attracted a cult following, appearing in several "greatest video games of all time" lists, and is credited for pioneering game systems including quick time events and open-world environments. Despite sales of 1.2 million, Shenmue did not recoup its development cost and is considered a commercial failure. After the release of Shenmue II, further games in the series entered development hell. In July 2015, Suzuki and his development company Ys Net began developing Shenmue III for PlayStation 4 and PC after a successful crowdfunding campaign, having licensed the rights from Sega.

This was one of gamings greatest moments. It still is. Reaching this moment, and besting it... I will never forget it. Thank you, Sega. _~stay focused!_
_That's the Hazuki-style._
To think this part inspired Kiryu vs 100 Tojo yakuzas in Y5 & Yagami and the boys vs 100 RK punks in Lost Judgment, they've come a long way.
That fighting style is called
"Bajiquan"Hakkyoku-ken
Remember folks, this game came out in December of 1999 in Japan... 👽
And about two years later shenmue 2 was released on dreamcast for everyone but the United States because fuck peter moore and xbox.
Crazy I was six years old still play this game
@@mikemoss6045 I distinctly remember being in the computer lab at school that day and reading an issue of GamePro and seeing a Shenmue 2 Dreamcast ad, then logging on IGN and seeing that it had been canceled... 😤
@mikemoss6045 Because it ran better on xbox vs Dreamcast
It was also remastered in 2018 I love this game i just saw this game as a kid and wonder what was this it a masterpiece but 2nd game omg they have way to many qte's
God I remember this. I was 12 and my brother was 17. I used to watch him play and never got to play shenmue but he failed like 4 times and decided to pass me the controller and I aced it the first time. It took forever, but him and I never had a good relationship. It was the first time he was proud of me though~
After so many speed runs of this, it's nice to just see a natural, organic play of this section.
Something special about just getting to see this without someone spamming the few cheesy inputs to tear through it. Actually getting the impact of how strong Pedro is makes this mean so much more.
8:01 awesome teamwork!!!
This game was ahead of its time, a very legendary game that's underrated.
You mispelled garbage.
@@SeriousDragonifyYou misspelled masterpiece.
@@jacobschmidt2709 No i didn't.
Also you're pathetic souless pea brain robot who likes garbage videogames without knowing a good storyline, dialogues and characters.
Read the books, dummy.
Yeah, i remember playing this, years ago, I was chinese.
@@undertyped1when the british genetics colonize you.
Unfunny jokes aside this game's dialogue was beutiful
The added violin in the soundtrack makes the scene even more epic
Shenmue walked so yakuza could run
I remember beating this as a kid. An amazing moment; i think we all had a cheese system to get through this.
That damn tornado kick lml
I'm so sad shenmue 3's combat is nothing compared to this.
Yep, the new game was such a disappointment, especially the ending.
Which makes absolutely no sense, they could have literally just remade the combat system from this game so simply and it would have been so much better. I cannot imagine what they were thinking with Shenmue 3 combat. If the combat was amazing like the other games I could have forgiven it maybe even loved it but it was just so far below this game and the equally impressive Shenmue 2
@@lazygenie5616 It's harder when you don't have over 200 industry professionals working at one of the top companies in the 90's, compared to essentially an indie studio developing shenmue 3.
@@retrogamelord3763 idk i would agree but look at what slocap studios did with sifu
@@jashardwallington Sifu was a pretty fun game. I cant wait when they add more to it, its an interesting concept.
That awkward moment when Gui Zhang is so cool you're rooting for him while fighting him
AN RPG WITH VIRTUA FIGHTER STYLE BATTLES.. EPIC
4:45 THAT WAS SICK!! Guy in the suit parried that guys attack the he got destroyed into that wall.
Exactly! Also the suited guy's name is Gui Zhang, if you were wondering...
Chen gui Zhang
That last guy in the seventy man brawl was a beast tho! That part was baller. Was pretty funny watching the last couple guys go down just as collateral to the two martial giants facing each other down
I also noticed isn’t the guy that ryo fights at the end similar to a streets of rage enemy?
Love how Ryo and the last dude fights like a Tekken or Virtua Fighter fight
Yeah, I mean I'd expect nothing less since this game was supposed to be a virtua fighter like rpg.
The music had me so hyped up. Epic moment in gaming.
That music just captures so much I remember playing this on the Xbox as a kid
This was only on Dreamcast. You played Shenmue 2 on Xbox, not this one.
This underated title is the reason i owned a dreamcast.
I kept spamming the tornado kick multiple times in this battle, in honor of Tom...
10:10 That round house kick JUST missed! This game is so underrated!!
lol
Shenmue: Streets of Rage edition. xD
Yea, in the 90s. Have you tried it lately?
it was made with the virtua fighter engine.. thats why the fighting was so good.
Shocking that the third game thought to follow up this masterpiece of a system with what they came up with.
This is 1 of the best moment in Shenmue I. It reminded me of my adolescence. Shenmue is always 1 of my favouite game ever too. Thank you for upload.
i finished most of them with the palm strike. (the one that was taught to him in the park). They couldn't even touch me.
So you like to finish guys off with palm strikes, eh?
How do use the movie I'm on xbox one
Stab Armor. Great move.
that jumping spin kick for the shit tiers. the fight with the chaps guy at the end I took my time and dodged and had a real good fight with him
Such an awesome moment of badassery!
Can’t wait to see this in the anime
12:07 lmfao ☠️☠️☠️ the way he coughing like that bruh
Man this takes me back to my childhood! I miss those days 😢
One of my favorite games to this day.
I hope the new anime has a whole episode dedicated to this battle.
Whats really special is that all those characters have there own unique skins and most apear only a couple of seconds
I like the battle soundtrack too its so beautiful when you fight
I feel like I'm watching a Virtua Fighter adventure game ...Akira has taught ryo well...
Still the greatest game ever , there is no case to answer
Never was "great".
@SeriousDragonify I agree that it never was great. It was beyond great and an eternal masterpiece.
This birthed alot of top games today. With that QTE style. Used in God of War and others
yes and thanks for comment
This looks better to me than some modern games today.
Or at least combat related.
2:43 OMFG HE DID MUD SPIDER WHAT A KING
Its somehting hard? cos i dont remember
You can tell that the reason the combat in I & II were so good is cause they had help from the Virtua Fighter developers
Same engine, shenmue 3 new engine
8:01 it really be ya own niqqa
TheJohnmarston72 Dey don’t think it be like it is but it do.
😂😂😂
Stop calling people niqqa.
The dialogues during combat kind of reminds me of Ninja Storm
To me, this looks like Yakuza before YaKuza. And holy shit that voice acting, Japanese with subs please
I think the voice acting is great.
@@Krystalmyth rare opinion over here. You know how most people make video about how awkward the dialogue and voice acting in shenmue. XD
The dodging is also very similar to Yakuza's quicksteps
Shenmue walked so Yakuza could run.
Shenmue would not be Shenmue without that voice acting, imo it adds to the games charm
And I'm sill wondering why Gui Zhang was so terrified of Mr. Leather towards the end.
I beat the game today and was wondering where tf he went lmao
@@oogaboogie Does he have a phobia of tall people or some shit?! He DIPPED! xD
When the music got intense i knew somethimg big was going down, but i didnt expect what i experienced, such a great game, ahead of its time
*Streets of Rage* in 3D
that cutscene and battle peak of gaming
6:10 incredible! Gui Zhang defeats a Mad Angel with a backflip!
Yes, we have GTA 5, San Andrea's, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and even Zelda, but this in my honest opinion, is the best game of all time. No matter what is said, this will always be the best nostalgia aside.
The themes, the story, the music, and the innovations in it redefining gameplay for all time.
11/10 🙌🏾
Main character: *beats up 69 dudes*
Guy who looks like a JoJo character: *clotheslines you* NIIIIIICE
Sin duda, un momentazo de este juego, ha envejecido muy bien
Never played Shenmue and I’ve seen plenty of long battles from playing Yakuza but for some reason this got me hype
Shenmue 3.. wwhy did they fuk up the fighting?
I did most of the work honestly. Ryo ain't sh*t.
This was so epic. I loved fighting through this.
Ryo manages to beat 70 people of the mad angels but can’t beat couple people from ren crew in shenmue 2.
I'm just now realizing Kodak used the sample in the beginning.
"no.. that's my line.."
They are in love.
Stop it.... Get some help
You're quoting a meme to make fun of someone? Lozer @@adamryamizard5560
This is better fight than any fights in Shenmue 3
Saddly
Still get chills.
I saw gaming epicness at a very young age!!❤❤
Ryo needs to be a guest character in tekken 8
Animation shouldn’t of glossed over this
0:00 what song??
It's the song that plays when it turns to night in Shenmue, called Nightfall I believe.
4:51 "local burger joint later?"
I love this game for this moment alone. This makes up for everything you’ve been through up to now. All the forklifting payed off in this one moment alone. And personally I liked the forklifting section because of my autism but personally the racing shit was boring as hell to me
When I first got here I was like oh shit shits gonna pop off now!!
8:45 me when my friend takes my last chicken nugget
This is still the greatest game of all time, anyone who disagrees, come at me ill destroy you
You’re not playing
I have to agree. It's the game i've loved playing the most over the years. I can go back to playing it anytime and still thoroughly enjoy it just as much as the first time i played it. I get properly trapped into it. Love the forklift races 😂
The biker dude fight gave me anxiety
Have you seen a black car?
What’s the name of the last song
6:53 YEET
Wow, they actually respond to being hit...unlike the sequel made twenty years later with a bigger budget.
Well, Shenmue 1's cost budget was 70 million at the time and Shenmue 3's budget was around 20 million.
@@ysinine9666 That was mainly because they had to remake the game from scratch after canceling the Saturn version. There's no excuse for the travesty that was Shenmue 3. It pretty much had a terrible game designer at the helm.
@@Krystalmyth man... If it isn't because of the gameplay... We could enjoy it more better.
6:53 YEET!
I just wish the team had more time to refine the simplified VF combat engine for this game, it was a fantastic concept, especially how the moves evolved - I wish Yakuza took a few nods from Shenmue's combat.
Which was better this
Or the final building battle in shenmue 2
*SEGA needs to relaunch Dreamcast again!!!* 💡
It'd flop.
Just like Stadia and Atari.
12:16 Pretty much how developers f'ed up with Shenmue 3 story and ending 20 years later.
This is favorite part
As soon as you have to fight those 70 men ryo's character model downgrades tremendously.
Everything about this is light years better than shen 3
What a game
Damn I miss the 80s-90s
Early 2000.Best games 👍
Would be bad ass if this was 2 player co op
I always found it funny how a lot of the Mad Angels were so pathetically weak that they would go down with one heavy attack or 2-3 light attacks.
I've been waiting to play this game some day I like this 1 then all of them
Its about 20 years i played this game first time, i cant believe.
@@HollyTendo one of the best..
@@m3fox680 👏 What he said
That leg spin around I cat do that
I can see lind wood fight like that
Shenmue the dragon foreal reminds of Jin lee and in my opinion Its just the bad guys didn't get a local voice the thugs im talking about but I believe they gonna remake this game in the future it will take alotta doe 💯‼️🗣
He's literally yakuza
This fighting style is much better than shenmue 4
You mean 3 right?
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic He came from the cursed future where we get another sequel and the combat is even worse
@@ALGOChannel Shenmue 4 is turn-based, but it doesn't outright tell you.
Bro I would have took the remastered version of this I really feel like Shinmue 3 is nowhere near this game was before it time
Shenmue RULES 🤘😎
8:06 😊
2:35 what move is that if so I wanna master it lol
Pit blow (trained)
Did he do back flips and he run to ryo and try to kick ham
Yuta Usami.
I see. Is that so.

say what you will about this game
This fu***** music OMG LOL🔥😱🤣
It was a great game for it's time but we have to move on people. Still what a shame.
Ryo fight in Bruce Lee Style. So cool time ! Unfortunaly shenmue 3 has not this kind of feeling i heard
It was so big hype about Shenmue 3, but i dont know its not like Shenmue :D
