About Game
Shenmue (シェンムー 一章 横須賀 Shenmū Isshō: Yokosuka?, "Shenmue Chapter 1: Yokosuka") is an open-world action-adventure video game developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega for the Dreamcast on 29 December 1999 in Japan and late 2000 in other territories. Directed, written and produced by Yu Suzuki, it is the first game in the Shenmue series, which Suzuki plans to span at least four games.
Shenmue consists of open-world 3D environments interspersed with brawler battles and quick time events. The game's level of detail was considered unprecedented at the time, including a day-and-night system, variable weather effects, non-player characters with daily schedules, numerous interactive objects, and various minigames. The player controls martial artist Ryo Hazuki as he sets out in revenge for the murder of his father in 1980s Yokosuka, Japan.
After developing several successful Sega arcade games, including Hang-On (1985), Out Run (1986) and Virtua Fighter (1993), Suzuki wanted to create a longer game experience. AM2 began work on a role-playing game for the Sega Saturn set in the Virtua Fighter world. In 1997, development moved to the Dreamcast and the Virtua Fighter connection was dropped. Shenmue became the most expensive video game ever developed at the time, with an estimated production and marketing cost of $47 to $70 million USD, though some of the development also covered Shenmue II (2001).
Shenmue received mostly positive reviews; critics praised its graphics, soundtrack, realism and ambition, but criticized its slow pace and voice acting. Though its focus on realism and mundane details divided players, it attracted a cult following, appearing in several "greatest video games of all time" lists, and is credited for pioneering game systems including quick time events and open-world environments. Despite sales of 1.2 million, Shenmue did not recoup its development cost and is considered a commercial failure. After the release of Shenmue II, further games in the series entered development hell. In July 2015, Suzuki and his development company Ys Net began developing Shenmue III for PlayStation 4 and PC after a successful crowdfunding campaign, having licensed the rights from Sega.

Ryo leaving for Hong Kong is such a touching and emotional part of the game. His stem is in Japan he knows his calling is to honk Kong for his dad. His friends and family are in Japan now he gets to be his own man and leave the nest.
It makes sense why his relationship with Nozomi fails : Shenmue lies on the Anguish of Separation. The kitten / Nozomi. Boats. Islands (Hong Kong island). Leaving home. The death of the father. Yet, this peaceful ending brings a sense of closure.

Lan Di does not bathe, nor does Ryo San. They never change clothes. Lol. This game is underrated. Sega made a masterpiece.
This and yakuza
This game is underrated
He bathes in blood and sweat of his enemies.
I agree. Yu Suzuki's Shenmue is what Sergio Leon's Once Upon A Time In The West is to cinema or TE Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom to Litterature. We're beyond the scope of gaming. This is Art.
In 3rd game he finally changes his outfit.
God this takes me back. Played this for so many hours as a youth. Nostalgic af
the three facial cues of nozomi: 1) tears of crocodile; 2) subservient kindness but still owns herself; 3) the most lovely smile in gaming history
The whole VA budget went into that last monologue, and they almost drowned it out in SFX and Music
Shenmue is one of those games you need to play. Especially today. It has aged like the finest wine known to mankind.
The story goes on...
To be continued....
When the guy in purple started sounding like Sméagol I just lost it
How you beat this guy fairly I'll never know. I had to keep running and grabbing. You are a Shenmue master.
For me, this is where Shenmue ends. I was quite disappointed with Shenmue 2 way back in 02/03 but still enjoyed it, now (despite the improvements) I think it's objectively worse than Shenmue 1, there is no Shenmue 3. I'd be quite happy for RGG studios to reboot the series, retain the core story beats but improve the narrative progression, voice acting, I think a darker Shenmue could be awesome. What I think would be incredible is if they allowed for branching paths where in one Ryo takes the "wrong" path and ends up consumed by vengeance. For me, the most crucial aspect however is that they nail the VF RPG that Yu Suzuki originally envisaged. I'd love to see them perfect the modified VF fight engine which was incorporated in S1 & 2. I love Yakuza & Judgment, I count them as two of my favourite game series but I'd prefer to have greater freedom in the fights, the ability to train and evolve the moves organically and no "win" button aka Heat Moves.
Fights should just take on virtua fighter style controls while the regular gameplay stays the same. shenmue 1 plays just like virtua fighter 3 with a different button layout and minor tweaks but it’s functions are similar. I think shenmue should be Rebooted by Sega with Yu Suzuki directing. They should fuse the two worlds together to build the shenmue and virtua fighter lore simultaneously since personally I think virtua fighters lack of lore is due to its RPG being reworked into this game. Not saying that’s a bad thing but I think shenmue and virtua fighter should share the same world so it can build its appeal with established characters and still contain the originals .
I enjoyed that game more than Shenmue 2 somehow, maybe because of the connexions between the characters.
i remember being SOOO disappointed at the end of shenmue cuz i thought id complete the story... but its a total cliffhanger and then it took like a decade for 2 to come out i never even played it cuz it wasnt on dreamcast. but this is one of those games thats so emotional and u get legit invested into it. its insane
"it took like a decade for 2 to come out"
It took two years to come out not ten years lol, stop being so hyperbolic.
And it was on Dreamcast…
@@alexa1591 to be fair, the Dreamcast version of Shenmue 2 was not released in North America, just the Xbox version.
@@McShave When you're a kid, two years might as well be a decade.
I ended up just getting it on the Xbox,I didn't want to go through the process of importing the game.
I just beat Shenmue and I loved the last boss. Very creepy! The music sells it for me.
"Yes."

Benjamin Young I know I played on Xbox but then switched to pc I didn’t get through the full game and save don’t transfer over chiao
@@W4V3RN I'm sorry it didn't transfer over
I played this on the ps4 when it got remastered
Aww the nostalgia
Can you still play the game after beating it? Or do you have to start all over again?
Over again if I remember.
How could Shenmue iii be so much worse than 1 and 2?
I loved it. It was more Shenmue
Game was rushed and wasn't made by SEGA
Null agrees with you
fun fact : the move that is used in shenmue 3 all the time to beat up the bosses is actually found in shenmue 1 its the cross charge taught by shozo mizuki (the homeless man)
@@danmann861 that’s like going to in n out, then serving you vomit and saying, “I love it, it’s more in n out.”
dreamcast games always had a problem with camera views for some reason lol resident evil literally had the worst camera and controls maybe ever
yes
I can’t finish the training can u tell me what u press exactly?
A second before he starts to punch -klick back and punch at the same time and then immediately the kick button twice (do it as fast as you can). Took me about 10 minutes to figure that because the explenation isn't very precicve. Hope it helps!
On dreamcast its right and X+B at the same time, on ps4 its right and square+X, do it at the same time
Que puedo decir 22 años: sakuragaoka 🤣
