    The buckles on the shoulder strap (seen in the center of the video at 1:22) are for attaching the Osprey Daypack to the front of the Farpoint/Fairview. You can see them demonstrating this at 2:36 in the video on the Daypack product page www.osprey.com/us/en/product/farpoint-fairview-travel-daypack-FARFAIRDAYF22_550.html Here is a screenshot from the video imgur.com/gallery/vlposIU

    First , I just wanted to say this channel is far superior to P___ H_____
    Anyways, the new layout seems very similar to the Porter series (laptop in back, stash pocket on top). I don't know if you have the latest Porter; but I would love to see the latest Farpoint 40 compared (or contrasted) to a Porter 46

    Omg, they finally moved the laptop compartment closer to the back. Such a weird choice to have it on the front on the previous version. I mean, they are a formidable company and probably know and understand weight distribution on a back pack.

      I never understood some of the design features on the previous model. My only thought is the Farpoint was always an extremely popular pack and they didn't want to do anything to mess up the success of that pack. I'm glad they finally did though.

    Great Video! How does the new version of the Farview 40 compare to the Porter 46? With the more similar organization, the main differences would be comfort and size, or are there any other aspects to consider?

    • @OneBagTravels
      @OneBagTravels  Год назад +1

      Yeah I'd say comfort and size are the biggest differences. I think Porter is easier to pack, and compression straps work much better and let you squish it down way more than the Farpoint/Fairview.

    Looking forward to your full review. I just picked one up and not sure I'm going to keep it yet. Did you notice the "false back" in the main compartment? Don't know how else to describe it. It's a plate that runs the full length of the main compartment separating it from the back housing the harness system. What is this for?

      I've also noticed this. When I cinch the shoulder straps, sometimes that plate (or maybe it's the harness system) curves into my back and it's uncomfortable. I'm wondering if maybe I'm just not using the pack correctly or there's something else I need to adjust. I think I'm going to reach out to Osprey Customer Support because I did NOT have this issue with my prior one which I loved so much.

    • @OneBagTravels
      @OneBagTravels  2 года назад +2

      The laptop compartment isn't actually separate, but the padded sleeve goes into the main compartment. It looks like a padded flap inside the bottom of the main compartment. For some reason it has little toggles you can detach it from one side, but I don't know why you would ever do this. Is that what you're talking about? That's all I see back there, behind the laptop sleeve it's just a plastic frame sheet, and the back backpack padding.

    Great information well explained. Thanks. Girlfriend has a Fairview 40 with a shoulder strap which we think is incredibly useful (e.g. carrying the pack only a few blocks to catch a bus, train, etc.). I'm quite disappointed that my new Farpoint 40 has no shoulder strap. Any ideas on a "hack" to attach a shoulder strap?

    • @OneBagTravels
      @OneBagTravels  Год назад +1

      Not a good way. It has two fabric straps on the top corners (not the front fabric loops) which would be good to attach a shoulder strap. Unfortunately they don't have the same straps on the bottom. So you could attach a shoulder strap to those top loops, and the bottom fabric loops. I imagine it would work, but I don't know how comfortable it would be. And those fabric loops aren't really designed to hold that much weight.

    I have the previous version, traveled with it 2 monthly trips in Asia, and a lot of shorter trips (about 25-30 flights) and it is still like new. It saved me also a lot of money on tickets carrying it as small luggage on the cheap economy flying companies as you dont need to check it in!
    For the Osprey quality i don't have to say mutch its already known..
    I highly recommend this backpack, specially for travelers! I recomend to buy together the raincover(its not included) as it has some kind of waterproofing on light rain,but not on heavy rain.

  • @TheNaught1
    @TheNaught1 Год назад +1

    Tried this out today. What happened at Osprey? It’s lower expectations season and the top blob pocket is the amateur hour highlight. It gets harder to open the more full the pack is, and hides small things in the corners. And the strong curve of the back frame would put bending pressure on a laptop. Harness was great though. So if you want a big open pack with good straps, it’s ok. Staying organized with minimum fuss? Not for you.

    • @OneBagTravels
      @OneBagTravels  Год назад +2

      Fair criticism. Good, comfortable, adjustable, backpack straps and a big main compartment are the main selling points on this pack. Some of the other features can be less than desirable. I've been using this bag over the years, and I've always found issues with one thing or another. If a person tries enough bags it's likely they will find one that works better for them. However I think for a general, all-purpose pack, that will work good for a majority of people, I haven't found a bag better than this one.

    • @TheNaught1
      @TheNaught1 Год назад +1

      @@OneBagTravels Right, I just can't get over the blob pocket's being hard to access with a full bag and unorganized. It's basically what I have already, and it just adds unneeded anxiety to key travel moments, like finding a passport, keys, wallet in a hurry. It is surprising to me how hard it is to find a 40L-ish, carry-on sized bag with good harness (load lifters and waist belt), compression straps, and some easy-access organized pockets. But in a smaller, 35L bag? Piece 'o cake, several good options there. Anyway thanks for all your work, your channel is such a big help!

I often find myself wearing the backpack and carrying the clothes bag like briefcase but then I'm wearing the small bag and having to hand carry the bigger bag which seems backwards... Using the farpoint + farpoint daypack clipped to the front seems like a much better weight distribution.
    Watching the Osprey official videos on these the farpoint 55 seems to have a different layout compared to the farpoint 40 + farpoint daypack such as the laptop sleeve, shoe compartment and other pocket difference. I would be interested to see a full rundown of the layout differences. They also have a new wheeled farpoint which sounds interesting to give my back a break every once in a while but I'm not sure if the 4 liters lost + layout difference would be worth it.

      Yes I would also like to see a breakdown between the 40+ daypack, and the 55. Guess I'll have to pick up the 55 up at some point. I wish the website did a better job at breaking down the capacity of the 55 bags. The previous version of the Farpoint 55 I believe had a ~40L pack, plus a 15L daypack. But you couldn't attach a daypack to the older model of the Farpoint 40, so if you wanted them together you had to get the 55. Now that you can attach a daypack to the 40, it seems like they negated the need for the 55. Since a Farpoint 40 plus the Daylite daypack is basically the same thing as the Farpoint 55?!

There might even be differences in the daypack but ospreys official video doesn't make it clear. I think that would depend on how full the main bag was. Fully packed the Farpoint 40 is about the max dimensions for carry on (check your airline dimensions to make sure though). I imagine if the daypack is attached then it would just count as part of your carry-on allowance, and not counted as a spearate hand luggage. It's not really waterproof, so if you're walking in enough rain to fill the back pocket with water your gear is probably going to get wet on the inside. However it does have a little hole in the bottom of the pocket to keep that from happenening if you were. They do sell a raincovers though.

      It's nice if you carry a laptop, but a waste of space/weight if you don't. My favorite style is a sleeve built into the main compartment. If done right it gives you all the same benefits of a deviated laptop compartment, but takes up almost no space in the pack if you don't use it.

    • @OneBagTravels
      @OneBagTravels  2 года назад +1

      The wire frame is just about 21 x 11" so with nothing in the bag it's just barely over those dimensions. I don't think you could fit it in a bin at the airport though because it has all the fabric, zippers and handles that stick outside of the frame. Plus if you put anything in the bag it's going to go over that. This isn't a very squishable bag unfortunately.

    • @mdubb4855
      @mdubb4855 2 года назад +1

      I would also add that there are some advantages to the stowed straps on my outbound leg. I find it really hard to fill a 40L or 45L pack at the start of my trip. By the end of the trip, however, I usually need more room. An expansion zipper panel isn't a good option, it might set off ticket counter agent's alarm bells. Those deployed backpack straps tend to not get counted as part of the bag volume, even though they free up significant inside space. Likewise there is a lot of dead air space in a truly double padded (body side and main compartment side) laptop slot. My 11" detachable will hardly use that space, and just slide around.

    I own a Farpoint 40 M/L size and Farpoint 55 S/M size (both bought in 2016, e.g. the preceding model) and just did the test: There's NO WAY I can fit the contents of a reasonably tight packed Farpoint 55 (only counting the main pack here, not using the included daypack!) into the Farpoint 40, well it might work if using brute force and turning the Farpoint 40 into a compression bag but that's not how I packed the 55 in the first place or how I want to travel. On top of that a fully loaded Farpoint 40 budges out like a turtle with horrible weight distribution whereas the Farpoint 55 has a more convenient straight shape with weight much closer to my back and an even front surface that is far better suited to strap my daypack of choice onto it (I use an Osprey Daylite Plus). So based on my first hand experience the "old" Farpoint 55 S/M is clearly the superior carry-on backpack. I honestly never understood the fuss about the Farpoint 40, at the expense of matching official carry-on size lengh Osprey designed a pack that doesn't carry well when fully packed and it doesn't fit in tighter overhead compartments either due to it's awkward turtle like shape. Please note that the Farpoint 55 S/M is significantly shorter (59cm measured) than the Farpoint 55 M/L (66cm measured in store) that's why I bought the shorter S/M in the first place, despite being a 5'11 male. I'm aware that 59cm length is technically still above the official carry-on size limit (

    • @OneBagTravels
      @OneBagTravels  Год назад +3

      Interesting, thanks for testing that. It's still confusing to me that Osprey would make what is basically the same bag in two different shapes and styles (Farpoint 55 is a 40L pack with a 15L daypack pre-attached; while the Farpoint 40 is a 40L pack with daypack attachment option). And both packs are theoretically the same capacity (40L) so they should hold the same volume, but they don't. Also I found the same thing with the Osprey sizing, even though I'm almost 5'11" I still went with the S/M size because it fit better.

    • @Roman-nu1om
      @Roman-nu1om Год назад +1

      @OneBagTravels from my extensive testing in 2016 the harness of the Farpoint 55 M/L would've been the better fit, to make the S/M work I had to fully tighten the load compression straps (the ones above the shoulders) to virtually raise the shoulder harness mounting points, I further made a knot from the excess strap right behind the clasp so it can't get loose anymore (the harness cover can still be applied). Despite this "hack solution" the 55 S/M still carries much better than the 40 with the otherwise better fitting M/L harness, I guess my wishes of a Farpoint 55 S/M length bag (45cm) will never materialize.

    It’s disappointing to see that they used J-straps instead of an S-Strap design for the harness. That means people with larger chests or busts are going to get squished. I’m also wondering how that adjustable harness system is going to work for someone smaller. Honestly, it looks like their “upgrade” to unisex is actually ignoring the needs of women. I hope that I’m wrong about that.
