I'm a fan of one bag traveling. Last year, I invested in a Bange 45L Carry On Backpack and set of 5 Cipway compression bags. Traveling for a week with this setup really works well.
Being ex-military I’ve always rolled my T-shirts and fold nice shirts into a square. In a medium packing cube I can easily fit 6 T’s and 2 nice shirts. My philosophy is also to pack for 1 day more than your trip.. just in case. For a month long trip going city to city, I space my stays in a hotel and then an airbnb that way I can wash my clothes at the airbnb. I had to tell my wife that people aren’t going to notice that you’re wearing the same clothes for a long trip bcos you won’t see the same people in the next city. How I fold T’s… width wise fold shirt in half (sleeve to sleeve), fold over sleeves into the body. Now fold in half length wise (collar to tail) and starting from the fold, roll tightly to the collar/tail. If folded neatly you won’t have many wrinkles on the T’s
An HDMI cable is useful if you want to watch content on the hotel TV through your laptop. However, my advice is to make sure you can access the HDMI ports from the back of the TV. Also, if you are travelling with more than one person, have each traveller carry their own pen with them, making it easier to write any immigration forms without having to pass one pen around. My pen of choice is the Fisher Space Bullet Pen. It writes on any surface and its compact when not in use.
I recently bought the travelpro maxlite international. My old carryon was getting old and with airlines now doing the size and weight restrictions I decided time to retire my old carryon of 15+ years. It is so light I don’t think I will mind taking it through the airport with my first trip in January. I also bought the kroser laptop bag as my personal bag as the the shoulder harness clasp broke on my last bag on my last trip it looks like it will do the trick.
When it comes to jackets, I like to have one with lots of pockets and wear it onto the plane. This allow me to carry lots of things that I can have to hand on the flight.
I travel internationally and your suggestions are spot on. On the plane, I wear charcoal walking shoes, compression socks, jeans, black belt, grey t-shirt and black blazer. I carry a medium sized crossover bag in which I can fit everything that is not clothing excepting toiletries (iPad Pro, iPhone, Bose noise-canceling ear buds, cable wallet, battery pack, air tag, outlet adapter, stainless steel water bottle, wine knife/bottle opener, umbrella, flashlight, sunglasses, wallet, pain reliever, antihistamine, Imodium, bandages, etc). Everything else goes in my backpack: two pairs of travel pants (1 grey, 1 navy), 2 v-neck sweaters (1 charcoal, 1 navy), 7 t-shirts (navy, gray, charcoal, white, olive, burgundy, and black), 1 white long-sleeved shirt, 7 pair no-show socks (black), 1 pair black socks - all merino wool - and black nylon jacket, underwear, and one pair of black soft-soled shoes. Everything goes with everything else and you are prepared for any situation - hiking, museum, church, concert, restaurant, sporting event - ready for it all.
Great list! Thanks!! I have a Monos carry on and my wife has an Away. I like the Monos compression straps a bit better, but I'll tell you mine shows every mark and scuff on the outside, while hers is in much better shape.
Good list. I've taken to getting an inexpensive pair of sleep buds and make them part of travel kit. I don't use them often, but when I stay somewhere off a noisy street, get booked next to someone reliving their frat days, or if I get in late and want to sleep in a bit, they're a lifesaver. I use them on long haul flights too, helps block out noise from other passengers when I'm trying to sleep. Bose discontinued theirs but Oslo just came out with a near clone of them.
merino wool tee's are truly amazing things. i have several from Duckworth and absolutely love them. not the biggest selection in colors but i like the ones they have and they go on sale for around $50. they arent 100% wool though as it is meant to do more moisture wicking, fast drying, etc. will have to try an unbound one and see how 100% wool compares to the duckworth.
Thanks for another great video! I will be overseas in a cold climate (30 degrees Fahrenheit) for four months. Having to pack sweaters is ruining my carry-on only vibe. Please ask Allie to do a video on carry-on only for long-term cold-weather travel. I have a Monos carry-on and an Aer Travel Pack 3 small. Would love to fly with just those two pieces. (Can't do Merino... I am allergic to wool.)
i personally layer on my bulkiest clothing and pack a shopping bag to shed layers into if i get too warm. i just realized i could pack a fabric bag or pillowcase and use my coat and hoodie as a pillow XD
Great video! Curious, have you tried the Aer carry on luggage? I agree about the quality of their backpack, and I found it superior to Monos on the luggage, too.
I like merino and have a few pieces that I use on every trip. I followed the link to look for that merino tee and found that the 'sale' price is $80. Huh? I really DO like merino but that price is more than I am willing to tolerate.
I ended up wearing my flip flops and packing my walking shoes because the walking shoes folded down better than my flip flops when I travelled around the world this fall
I don’t know if maybe my Owala free sip is broken but my wife and I just got back from a trip to Paris and our water bottles exploded every time we opened them on the airplane in flight. Contents was only flavored water.
Hey Nik, this may not be the right place to ask but I watch most of your videos and I was wondering if you had any advice on travel insurance when booking trips, is it worth it? Are there any deals outside of say Expedia travels and such. Any experience with this? Certain credit cards that cover a trip in case of an emergency whether it be sick or just bad weather? Any hassles with said companies and so forth. I think that would be good info for viewers who are new to traveling. Thank you!
Aer TP3 is heavy AF, and I'm 6'2" and heavy. I sold it for Osprey 26+6, it's the best option for both a personal item size or a mid-range carry-on where necessary. I don't get why people still suggest Aer TP3, sure its OK quality, but it's expensive and heavy. Yuck.
9:53 - that isn't basic. My dopp kit is a CAP 0.5 from Evergoods and contains zero liquids, while still covering all my hygiene needs for indefinite time. That being said, all my tech (excluding camera) also fits in another CAP 0.5; btw a plug adapter is a very bulky item and I've never stayed at a place, whether hotel or airbnb, that didn't have one available, just had to ask. If I travel somewhere warm, I can use a 20L EDC backpack and stay for however long; if it's cold, I can do it with a 26-30L. PS: a metal waterbottle is a really bulky item, depending on the shoes you bring, it could take up more space than a pair of shoes. I use a collapsible one that packs down to nothing when empty and I hang it with a carabiner on the bag when full. Even if you have waterbottle pocket(s), that's still space you can use for something else (like the packable rain shell, for example).
Good video, but I have peculiarities... I don't spend hundreds on a bag, not because of quality, but because I always find something I don't like and end up changing bags... again, again, and again. My wife says I'm collecting luggage and backpacks. Lucky we have a big storage space over the garage.😂 No Merino because it's expensive and I must wash the clothes against my body after wearing. Merino or not I would be washing it regularly. It's just the way I am. Maybe a phobia? 😱
Does anyone know of a brand that sells slim compression packing cube individually? Preferably no longer than 10 or 11 inches long so it can sit horizontally. Thanks!
I really want to have some merino wool, but most companies that produce it just aren’t size inclusive. Even their 2X sizes are small. I get it, I’m fat. People/companies are generally very disgusted/apathetic towards that, but fat people need travel clothes too, so it would be nice if we could actually have them.
Your don't need that many pairs of socks and underwear. I take two so you can wash one and wear one every day. Just wash them in the sink and they dry fast. I get 3-4 days with merino wool socks.
I like how you give packing ideas for one bag travel. I have an upcoming trip of about 10 days. I am thinking of skiing 1 or 2 days though. How do I pack clothing for something like that (even if I can rent all the ski equipment there). Do you have any suggestions
Here's what I did when we were traveling full time - I wanted to ski as well. I packed base layers and/or clothing that could be worn under ski gear (used some nike joggers as my stand-in long underwear pants, and packed a thin thermal long underwear shirt), used my normal mid layer and jacket (thermal fleece mid layer, eddie bauer puff shown in the video as outer layer), as well as gloves, and buff, then I RENTED the ski pants and helmet the same place I got my boots, skis, etc. The jacket wasn't a true ski shell, but if only skiing for 1-2 days, IMO it's fine. You could probably also rent the jacket.

Marino wool for the win! I never realized how much lighter it could make packing. Anyone else swear by it?

I travel for work and this is one of the best and most informative videos I’ve seen. Great tips, thank you!

Thanks for sharing it, helped me a lot
i got some vacuum packing cubes and man i love these things.

How do you feel about the handles? I chose the Monos because of the handles and the zippers being the same color as the luggage.
Thank you for the lists. I totally agree
Excellent video and recommendations - thanks!
Thank you. Can you suggest some good options for sports shorts that can also work for swimming
Could you make more videos of traveling as a family? we could benefit a different perspective from you of traveling with baby/toddler
Owala totally with get you (or your neighbor 😬)with a splash of water mid flight. Still our fav travel bottle.
We've left one carry on. Next trend: "two pockets only" travel.

Hi Nik, FYI... looks like the link for the Firestick is the same as the Retractable Cable.
Thanks for the show recommendation! I just threw away my walking shoes from this past year so I was in the market for a new pair.
I got a windbreaker from H&M which helps keeping me warm and/or dry if it's raining. I'll take your advice however with the hoodie.
very cool video, very complete! now I want to travel! thanks for ther list and video

I’ve been travelling for two and a half years with one bag, 48 countries.
A lot of these bags are 6-8 lbs. most airlines are limiting 15-18lbs total weight. What are carry on options for under 5lbs
Hi Nik..great tips. Thanks very much 😊
13:39 the OG!

Try bamboo viscose clothing. Better prices and same sort of properties as merino wool

Black Friday at wool site. Maximum 10%

Nice video.
Thorough, clear, compelling, organized, intentional! Top-tier content! Count me as a subbie! 😊❤🎉
Instead of a packable day pack, I OneBag with my 23L EDC bag. I just travel super minimalist. 🤷
I don't think you mentioned the brand of everyday shorts that you pack.
do you have recs for camera tripod for carry on?
9:53 - that isn't basic. My dopp kit is a CAP 0.5 from Evergoods and contains zero liquids, while still covering all my hygiene needs for indefinite time. There isn’t a link for your packing list. Thanks

Hahaha the 'always find something I don't like' thing resonates.
Does anyone know of a brand that sells slim compression packing cube individually? Preferably no longer than 10 or 11 inches long so it can sit horizontally. Thanks!
At 8:04 which business class flight / airline was that? The seat looks so cool!
I asked too soon ... At 8:20 the exterior movement makes it look more like a train 😅
That was a Frecciarosa in Italy - Executive Class - it was amazing!
Where is the rain jacket link??
Ah I missed it - good catch. Added to description now (and right here): Outdoor Research Helium Jacket: amzn.to/3zBEKex (
I like Unbound Merino but man just $10 off the shirts. Come on.
Your links don’t work
I really want to have some merino wool, but most companies that produce it just aren’t size inclusive. Even their 2X sizes are small. I get it, I’m fat. People/companies are generally very disgusted/apathetic towards that, but fat people need travel clothes too, so it would be nice if we could actually have them.
Try Simply Merino - I am not a small person! I have long sleeve and tanks and I love them!
I agree. Unbound merino xl are snug on me
Yes.
Midway USA had some 3xl (true size) on Black Friday. 5’ 10” 350 and it fits my torso, sleeves are a little long but that’s every long sleeve I own.
You can get custom size merino shirts from son of a tailor. No matter how big.
huh, how do you try it unused, I thought once you try it you used it?
Pack it/test it at home - just can’t travel with it.
Your don't need that many pairs of socks and underwear. I take two so you can wash one and wear one every day. Just wash them in the sink and they dry fast. I get 3-4 days with merino wool socks.
What do you suggest for people to use instead of Airtags if they aren't (and don't want to become) Apple customers? Many aren't for a reason.
4 shirts, shorts, swim trunks, workout short and 2 workout tees, I'm gonna use depends underwear I can throw them away, and i'll sleep naked
is there a shortcut to the original language? the AI voice is unbearable, id rather listen to the original if there is one
I can't help but like the presenter, but this particular video is really just one long commercial.
If you’re a dresser, your advice doesn’t work. But thanks anyway.
