Three big blond guys, long hair, various lengths of beards and in fully Bonnie Prince Charlie attire, Walked in, all the guests parted, Mosses Red Sea style. We were in Cozumel Mexico for my wife’s 40th. A group of 20 and I met this Scottish couple and they fit in with us like we knew them our whole lives. The next night these English guys started talking to us and we were telling them about our new friends they immediately started bad mouthing the Scottish people. Saying the the whole lot is nothing but drunks as if we we’re going to side with them on the topic. I immediately told them that those are my kinda people and kicked them out of our crowd. Quite ironic considering when the English come down to visit Spain 🇪🇸, most of them show their contempt for our country, and do nothing but get drunk and start fights with Spanish locals, whereas the Scottish don’t act like that towards us.

Scots are very similar to us Brazilians. We like to swear and to party a lot and we're also known to be a passionate nation that makes friends with everyone like a big family.
Something tells me I need to spend some time in Scotland. Making friends at a pub and going to a random party with them is the most mineiro (people from Minas Gerais) thing ever.
I moved to the U.S, and I hate when people say that I'm not British, because I'm Scottish. I'm tired of explaining that Scotland is on the island of Great Britain.
Listening about Scots and Scotland...you folks are 99% similar to Balkan people (Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro,...). There are many similarities when it comes to mentality.😀
Absolutely not true. Many people would be surprised but if you are from the Balkans your mindset would be more similar to Middle Eastern nations then fellow Europeans.
1. Do we wear kilts, daily? - No. They tend to be reserved for special occasions, mostly weddings, though many will wear one to a Scotland International Football, or Rugby game. 2. Most Scots are ginger and burn easily? - No. Though we do have the highest percentage of gingers, at 13%. It's due to a strong Scandinavian influence. Dark haired Scots do tend to tan more than fair haired Scots. 3. Scots drink loads, and party hard? - Yeah, guilty as charged, m'lud. It is true we need very little encouragement to get blootered. 4. Scots swear all the time? - Again, true. We use profanities like punctuation. Though we also use it as a compliment just as much as an insult. So we might say "he's a good c*nt", or equally " I cannae stand that c*nt". 5. Scots are stingy? - I wouldn't say so. We tend to be very generous people. It's an extension of our hospitality. We're welcoming, and friendly, in the main, so generosity tends to go hand in hand with that. 6. We say 'och aye the noo'. - No. Just as we never say "it's a braw bricht min licht nicht the nicht", or "there's a moose loose aboot this hoose". What i find odd about this kind of stereotype, is that if other nations were stereotyped similarly, it would be viewed as racism, but with us, it's viewed as just having a laugh. 7. Our food is unhealthy? - No, not in the main. Not any more than other nations food. We do have our chippies, where it's all deep fried, but we have our more traditional foods which are healthy - porridge, salmon, smokies, trout, summer berries, venison, haggis. What i would say is, that like most northern European countries, our traditional diets were seasonal, so in Summer, the food was lighter, fresher, come autumn, winter our diets became heavier, more stodgy, so there were more carbs through the winter months. 8. We're pessimistic? - I'd say we're more straight talkers. We call a spade, a spade. That can often come across as been dour, or pessimistic. 9. Annoying stereotypes? - Mostly to do with speech, i would say. That we say 'och', 'aye', 'hoots', 'jings, crivvens, help ma boab'. Also, that some seem to think we still all live in the Highlands on crofts, running about the hills, shouting 'Freeeeeeeeeeeeedoooooooooooom' at every opportunity. 10. What i want the world to know? - One big thing. That without Scottish inventions, discoveries, or innovations, we wouldn't have the world in which we live today.
I think you’re incorrect about the bit where you say if other people said that about other nations that would be racism. People say of the English that we say “cheerio”, that the French say “ooh la la” etc. It happens with every nation.
@@amyw6808 English, and British in general do say 'cheerio', or some take on it, and the French do say 'Ooh la la'. Scots don't say 'och aye the noo'. Do you see the difference? 'Och aye the noo' is akin to someone suggesting Mexicans always proclaim 'Ay cha wa wa', or a Thai Woman saying 'Me love you long time'. Now, if i were go around saying either of these phrases to a Mexican, or a Thai, i'd be accused of racism. Foreigners say to us though 'Och aye the noo', and nothing is thought of it. We actually laugh at it. Do you understand what i'm saying? We don't take it offensively.
Scottish food sends a message to the world if anyone is thinking of attacking us: It says ‘if this is what we’re prepared to do to ourselves, do you really think we’re scared of what you’re gonnae do?’
Hi! I'm Catalan, and the comment at the beginning about subtitles been needed, wasn't my case, I'd got quite familiar with the Scottish accent by watching Outlander, among other things. As a Catalan person I can quite relate with Scottish people, I mean, even though historically we supported different monarchies, meaning during the Spanish Succession War, we had the support of the English Crown, and when they left we lost against Phillip the V, cousin of James Stuart the VII and I. Nowadays, we kind of want similar things politically. We have our own culture, language or multiple languages (please don't let those languages die by the way), and I kind of hate when people assume we are typical Spanish people, Spanish Stereotypes don'tapply to us, we are very different, in fact, I don't even consider myself Spanish. Having said that, what you guys talked about Scottish people not getting tan and such, that's not my case, I'm an iberian-mediterrenean-european, and the picture you see, was taken during spring, I get a bit more tan during the summer. Though my sister is a bit more pale and rarely does she get tan I think is doesn't depend on your nationality, it depends more of your genes and such, even in the same family, people inherited different qualities. Nice video! Best regards from Barcelona!
@@indexpictures I mean, it's interesting the fact that we were sort of against each other, being Philip the fifth cousin of James Stewart, and us getting the help of king George the second. However, in the end, we wanted the same thing, and we still want that: our own culture and such (leaving other stuff aside). Now, changing the subject, I've a funny story to tell. Like I said, we were getting help from the English king, and I've recently done the MyHeritage Ancestry DNA Test and I just found out I'm 5.5% Irish, Scottish and Welsh (not English-speaking). I'm also 87.5% Iberian (Catalonia, South-France, South-Spain and Algeria) and 7% Middle Eastern (Egypt, Arabia, Iran...) That's because Arabs stayedin the Iberian Penninsule for centuries during the Middle Ages, they used to call it Al-Andalus, and they stayed the most in what's now Andalusia (South-Spain), and I have Andalusian blood relatives. So, when I said I am Iberian-Mediterrenean-European, that was definitely true: from both sides of the Mediterranean sea, and a bit from North-Western Europe.
@@judna1 i should do a DNA test, we have a fairly good family tree going back centuries but there could always be a surprise! we're from Donegal in 🇮🇪 but after the famine moved to the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 and South West 🏴, I suspect the potential surprise would be finding Viking DNA from over 1000 years ago
@@indexpictures Yeah, that's a possibility. Finding out I was 5.5% Irish, Scottish and Welsh was a surprise for me. My mom and my grandma did the test and got 1.25% or so, of Azquenazi (Jewish), but I didn't for instance. I had a higher Middle Eastern instead. Everyone get what they get, even coming from the same family, same blood line. I've a darker complection than my mom, my grandma and my sister for instance, so that might come this... Generics...😅✌🏽

About the tanning. I'm an American and I was once living for a month on a beach in Southern Spain, and I met a group of fellow campers from Scotland who were being terrorized by the sun. Now, I never burn. I turn very dark brown and my new friends asked me where my ancestors came from. When I said Ireland, Scotland and Northwestern Germany, they refused to believe me. And to be fair, I'm the only one in my very large family whose skin is like this, but I know I'm not adopted because I look just like my brothers, except for my melanin-heavy skin. Mutation, I suppose. I'm also the only one who has never had a problem understanding the Scots accent, but then I'm also the only one who ever became fluent in a second language. German, as it happens...
@@chiefmaster6880 D'ye'know, almost 50 years ago, after listening to my Irish aunties' strange tales from my earliest childhood, I discovered Horslips. And of course I mostly just loved the music (although I never got to see them play), but their interpretations of the auld myths were fookin' brilliant. And, sure, in those days there were a lot of mythical, imbibable agents in the air, but the legend of the changeling is far, far older than the hippies, ain't it just? I also have an old friend who grew up in Stuttgart and who, like me, is very much browner than the rest of his family. Who's really to say what's what, is all I'm saying...
When the guys says about the C word…where I live we have a saying “for one cont, he’s some cont but he’s a good cont” and it’s used to describe someone that’s abit wild but generally good
"och aye the Noo" I would never say that together but most definitely would say phrases like: "Och, away ye gae" "Och, no the noo" Or just "no the noo" "Aw Aye" So yes, I would say that phrase is half right!!!
I hate to say but we do almost say "Och aye the noo". If you ask someone close to you to highlight when you do say it, you'll be surprised. I used to reply "och aye" whenever I was speaking to someone from England, and it still happens while back in Scotland.
I didn't need to access the subtitles, since I have many friends who are from Scotland. I actually love their accents, and yes, there are several Scottish accents.
Okay, here´s my feedback from 13 holidays in Scotland: 1. I saw ONE guy in his 30s wearing a kilt at the inn in Glen Coe. Otherwise, just the pipers wear them. 2. Yes, they do if they´re not "imported" - like me next year. Scotland pulls me in like a magnet. 3. I´m more of a nature guy, but pubs and ceilidhs do get lively, and no one wants to leave at "last orders"! 4. Scots are polite to tourists. Until you hang out with them for the day. Very good-natured swearing and banter. 5. Money-conscious to finance their lifestyle, but very hospitable to others. Got invited to stay for dinner more than once! 6. I never, ever heard "och aye the noo" until this video. 7. Irn Bru and fried whatever form the chippy are part of culture, but so are scones, hearty pies, haggis, cullen skink, etc. 8. Rain and Westminster´s politics are compained about. But pessimism leading to depression has become a problem. 9. Indeed, probably that Scotland is a part of England. Sasunnachs. 10. I hear they want to join the EU! 13:30 Your stabber will give directions to the nearest hospital: Sigmas, the lot of them ^^

After watching this video about Scots with their stereotypes, I think they are different from who they are in different countries like Asia, Africa, Canada, Europe, and in the United States.
My moms a biracial Scottish woman? And I can vouch this is pretty accurate lol. And she came to America in the 70’s to South Carolina . And we lost our house to a fire a few years ago. And ever since we have lived in southern Ohio And everyone here for some reason they don’t understand my moms accent which is faded.
Someone else said the subtitles were wrong, so I rewatched it with subtitles and here are my corrections (the bigger ones. There were loads of little words here and there): “The family time” should read “the family tartan”. “I just burn and then it goes away” should read “I just burn and then go white”. “…for being cheap” should read “…for being stingy”.

I have traveled to the UK once and among many of the major cities Edinburg is the only place I want to get back to. The city was cold as hell but the vibe was just different.
"Och aye the noo" sounds like someone just trying to stitch together all the Scottish words they know. I've heard people exclaim "och", I've heard them say "aye", and I've only heard "the noo" on Still Game, so it sounds very old timey... "Och aye, the noo" would have to be some ancient person confirming something has happened just moments ago.

Listening about Scots and Scotland...you folks are 99% similar to Balkan people (Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro,...). There are many similarities when it comes to mentality.😀
Always thought that as a Scot. Balkan, Celtic and Slavic people are very similar culturaly. It's a friendship I welcome.
Absolutely not true. Many people would be surprised but if you are from the Balkans your mindset would be more similar to Middle Eastern nations then fellow Europeans.

@@theonef570 But I think you're just generalizing!

This is the matter!
The Scots seem to share a lot in common with Slavic culture. Would love to go to Scotland.
as a belarusian living in glasgow i definitely agree
@@amyw6808 I was shook when my boyfriends French parents visited and I realised how much they say "oh lala" 😄

Yes, we know much about Catalan politics and culture. It’s fighting for your cultural ways.
the comparison between the catalan/castillan & scot/anglo tensions is a really good one

Sasunnachs.
