I tried to replace my M3 MacBook Air with an iPad Pro! And now I'm ready to give you my honest opinion on how it turned out. Yes it’s so freaking annoying how more and more people are forcing us to listen to their add in their videos!! If they are that desperate for more money they still shouldn’t have to try to pick up extra crumbs at our expense! Please just made adds in other ways don’t force us to listen to some bullshit add with in the videos. Just let us watch the regular video! I've searched through numerous videos about whether to get a MacBook or an iPad for work, but none of them actually address the needs of someone working in a corporate setting like me. Almost all the videos focus on creative industries such as animation, photography, and filmography, and hardly ever mention essential office tools. They don’t take into account the real-world work tasks that involve Microsoft Office, Zoom, Teams, Google Docs, or Canva. It feels like finding a needle in a haystack just to get relevant information. I wish these reviewers would add a disclaimer to make it clear that their recommendations are mainly for people in the creative field, not those of us working in corporate environments!
For me, it's more a question of whether a MacBook can replace my iPad, and I have to say no. My MacBook collects dust while my iPad is my main device. It always depends on the area of use.
For me it’s iPad for consumption and simple things like shopping, emails etc using Office 365. My 16/256 M1 Mac mini drives an Apple Studio Display (nano to avoid reflections) and Dell 4K 27in (P2715Q I think). That a superb work and AV set up. I guess if I was starting out an M3 Air, possibly the 15 inch and a good second plug in 2k monitor that’s portable would be excellent, then the basic iPad now its price is low as a travel consumption tool.

My iPad Pro M4 1TB with cellular has replaced all my Macs. I have ZERO need to play “two games at once” … who does that? I don’t need to emulate Android devices, why would I since I have an iPad Pro ? Does you Mac come with cellular? Does you Mac air stay connected to internet when you go outside of a wireless hot spot? I use my iPad Pro M4 for work via Citrix app so I can dial into any computer (be it Windows or MacOS or Linux). I can connect a second monitor to my iPad Pro M4. I have Logic installed and so far it does everything the MacOS version does. For Travel the iPad Pro is lighter, smaller, and I just open it and go to work or play (don’t care if I’m wireless or cellular … in fact my cellular connection is often faster than any wireless hotspot). Netflix HDR movies never looked better than on my iPad Pro. Affinity Photo 2 for iPad is just as functional and Windows version and way better than Adobe PS. DaVinci Resolve for iPad is as good as the Windows desktop version and still supports BDM color panel, mixer, speed editor via Ethernet to wireless. There isn’t a single thing I can’t do on my iPad that I could do on my old MacBook or Mac or Windows. iPad Pro M4 is beyond awesome and it’s FAST, VERY FAST.
This sounds awesome :) I´m thinking also to buy the Ipad pro for DVR. With the new DVR Server, i think i can exchange the Projects on my windows PC.
How do u connect to an external display? Attach an external hdmi port ? Wirelessly?
@ I use a USB-C Docking/Hub with a HDMi Port. Super small and easy. In the Future I want to get a Apple TV with Airplay :)
But if you don't need a hub you can plug a USB-C to Hdmi cable 🙂

I got iPad Air 3 months ago. I rarely need my MacBook outdoors as I have a Mac at my work as a programmer. So I found myself leaving it behind most of the time. But at the same time I needed some other portable device that I can carry with me everywhere. iPad Air was the logical choice so I got the M2 model. However, after I had it, I felt the want to utilize that power. It’s very thin, light, and is cheap. Why can’t I do more with it. This is a wish I’m trying to achieve.

Microsoft Office is the limiting factor for me. I use a bunch of features on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that aren’t available on the iPad. As soon as those are available, I can go iPad only. Apple will never release a version of MacOS for the iPad and Microsoft will never unlock full features for the iPad. Looks like I’m toting around two devices.
I bought the M4 iPad Pro and keyboard and had it for three days and returned it and purchased a MacBook Air (16GB Ram + 1TB SSD). I just felt the MacBook Air was more versatile and way more suited to my needs.

iPad and MacBook Air should be merged into one product. When the iPad is docked you get macOS and when it’s undocked you get something close to iPadOS (with a better finder). Key is to make it seamless and work well with both a keyboards and touch screen.

@@caydenpo1001 It's not a simple decision - iOS / iPadOS is a commercial software market. It's not only a place to pay fee for Apple, it's a place for developers to earn money.
If you turn iPad to Mac, you cut a software market branch. It's bad for developers, bad for Apple, bad for users. Because devs will not develop for iOS as happy - why they should, if docked iPad is a MacBook? So why to use iPad as mobile, if software for iPad lacks?
It's a bit more complicated. Plus - iPad as MacBook will sabotage MacBook sales as well. If i have MacBook on iPad, why to bother buying a Mac?
Sure, making iPad as iPad is artificial - especially on M4 chip. But it's much more complicated than it seems.
My M2 MacBook Air and 2018 12.9” iPad Pro are partners, not competitors, with some overlaps. It’s great that I can use the iPad as a second screen for the Air and still be able to use it as a tablet. The iPad is more convenient to open up in a cafe for simple stuff in MS Office, reading, emails and, best of all, having an iPad means I no longer need or use paper … it’s good to have both. I’m not ready to upgrade either of them yet, though, until or unless I see value in the machine learning / AI capabilities of future software that requires the extra power of the new processors. It was the software that ran on the original iPad that persuaded me to get one, because I could scribble notes in meetings with my finger and make sketches, no more paper to carry / file/ lose, with the portability and beautiful screen for content consumption as welcome extras. It will be compelling software that sells me my next one too - maybe it’s on the way 🤞

Hey man, I'm an upcoming freshman in college. I've never bought any of these iPads or MacBooks so I'm unfamiliar. I'm looking for something able to browse, google, and note take. Something portable and easy to carry and like you said, no more paper. What do you recommend? I'm not really much of an artist either. Just a student.
@@aqdask999 if it’s for any kind of professional work and I could only buy one it would be the MacBook Air, Mac OS is more powerful and versatile. If it’s for simple domestic word processing and accounting and content consumption, or visually creative work (not my thing unfortunately) then iPad Pro with the touch interface would likely be better

Exceptional review! While iPadOS has made some strides, there is still a considerable gap between it and a true personal computer. To bridge this gap, iPadOS should evolve creatively while retaining its unique touch-input capabilities, bringing it closer in line with the functionality and versatility of macOS.

Pretty expensive second device considering it has the power to be a primary device.
Using a "lap desk" with the iPad might solve some of the balancing issues on your lap.
Someone will have to come up with some base attachment for the Magic Keyboard base to make it heavier. I was hoping the new Magic Keyboard would have come with 2 or more Thunderbolt ports to function kind of like a hub where I could attach and chain SSDs, SD Card Reader, Camera etc. Didn't happen. Also, still can't manage disks like the external SSDs, NAS, DAS from any type of disk manager in iPad Pro. I forsee my iPad Pro as being my mobile tablet/laptop and my Mac Studio as being my desk computer. But still, need more functionality in my iPad Pro. I don't see the point of a laptop (especially one that does not do sketch/paint as the Macbooks do not).
8:57 I gave up trying Stage Manager. It’s horrible. I just have to remind myself that iPad is a tablet, not a full computer, no matter how its form factor may look like.
The iPad can't even run certain websites correctly on not just Safari but any web browser. that alone explains why people even the average user might still need some sort of laptop around, if not a MacBook then a cheap dell pc laptop.
I had said this on others videos because not a single RUclipsr address this, but the fact that you can't doing something simple like creating a bootable usb on a ipad "pro" is a indicator that the pro is just marketing,
I created a windows boot usb on my 350 dollars pixel 6a yesterday because i didn't have other laptop with me and my main laptop was without an os ( because I got creative xd)
Anyway this is something that a Chromebook and android phone and tablet can easily do, now imagine what other features ipad/iPhone are missing out xdd

The iPad is an excellent Mac sidekick. The lack of full feature apps like iWork and G-Suite keeps me from ditch my MacBook a go iPad only.
Umm, there is Pages, Sheets and Keynote already?? And you can use G-Suite in browser - it’s better.
It's a hybrid device, it's not meant to replace macs of iphones.
I believe it’s a great device and tool that serves its purpose,I don’t see why anyone would want to replace it for a MacBook. Both work great for me but I have no intentions of replacing one for the other
I’ve seen this video with all RUclipsrs. What’s wrong with this obsession of making the iPad a laptop? It will never be !
I feel like it's not about trying to make the ipad into a laptop, but instead about trying to get the best out of both worlds. If you can use your ipad as both a tablet and a laptop, then you can really benefit by dipping into both sides.
But that said, having the full macbook experience will not happen on ipad, so it depends on what you want from your devices and experiences.
I feel that, for those who want an economical option that provides the benefits of an ipad but can still act as a "semi laptop", the ipad with a keyboard makes the most sense. It is a one device purchase and can give you the ipad experience and some of the laptop experience.
For those that have extra cash, the laptop and ipad combo makes more sense.

I have a 2018 iPad Pro and I haven’t seen and need to upgrade since then because at the end of the day the MacBooks don’t do anything new.
I only have an iphone and need to replace my old HP laptop. I’ve had an Iphone for 10 years, my mom has i phone and mac and i am trying to decide if ipad or mac is better for me. Currently i only use my work computer a microsoft surface. My usage: Web browsing (i tend to keep A LOT of tabs open), document storage and creation. On my phone: i shop, social media, i take a lot of pictures and like to create videos. I’d love to be able to do editing on a device other than my phone 😩. I’d love to manage my photos on a device other than phone (50k on cloud, 50k on external hard drive) i’d love to put them all in one place. I’d like my music on another device. I’d probably watch movies and streaming apps on the go. I was mostly attracted to the ipad bc i can use it like a note pad and take notes. I have note pads with paper everywhere 😩 i need to streamline that.. 😏 it’s sounding like i need an Ipad with a good processor and more storage.
This may shock everyone, but I…*gasp*…don’t create video content!!! I do something called writing. So, I prefer the iPad.

Without trying to be a hater (I love my M1 iPad but it has its place).
I’m surprised before new software is released that people still try the experiment of replacing a Mac with iPad.
Last night I was preparing for a trip and it was so hard to compress a document and upload to a French government website but my low powered Surface Pro did it like a champ?! 🤷🏽♂️. And that there is the problem. Software just needs to get closer to desktop level as many say.

Clearly this is a flex as no one believes you can completely switch from an iPad to a MacBook as they are different devices. So maybe when the next Galaxy Tab S Ultra arrives you can do the same video; run your business on a Galaxy Tab and see how well that tablet copes with your daily workflow?
Exactly and no one can use the MBA or MBP as a tablet. I am not sure why every single MacBook video doesn't have the same type of comparisons....."the fully spec'd out MBP ($6800+) is fast and has a beautiful screen, but it lacks pencil input and the removable keyboard of the $349 iPad". Somehow, this comparison only goes one direction with tech reviewers.
Very good review. The main apps I need to use is the Microsoft office (word, excel, PowerPoint), emails and web browsing. And of course Netflix while traveling. Currently using Macbook Air 13” M3. Should I move to iPad Pro 13” M4?
Microsoft office you won’t get full version. It can be frustrating to work with limited options.
Having watched a few videos on the M4 iPad I think they should be called “Can the iPad replace my laptop” as a RUclipsr? :)
The magic keyboard case in my opinion should have been something like a docking station. The magnetic attach is perfect for it. You just place the docking station on a table and every time you want to use it like a computer you just slap it on. Rest of the time its just a tablet.

Actually I have also tried to replace my MacBook Pro partly with in iPad Pro 12.9" in 2020. I also had the Mac Pro 5,1 for main work, but I tried to do the same stuff on the iPad Pro. It was a pain into the ass. So I sold it. It's already now my 10th iPad until now. I actually have now the iPad mini 6 but just for reading and small tasks.
Some technical issue in the video I have realised:
there would be a "low pass filter" for the microphone very good, because I have my Mac connected to an studio audio system with an subwoofer and I hear so often the bassy noise from touching the desk and so on.
What should i buy for first time to work? I use only for typing in word etc and reading reports/journals.
Aaaaaagggh! Can’t get past the thumping being picked up on the mic. I couldn’t get even half way through. Try isolating the microphone so it can’t ‘hear’ you thumping on your desk. I was interested in the content.

It’s a social experiment by a corporation that is funded by the consumers. Sure it would be neat to be able to have it all in one device, maybe dex like, but it’s not profitable at this time. iPad still lacks the flexibility, no integrated backup like Time Machine, and if you have a critical app then you’re out of luck. I really tried but just kept hitting that wall. Still it’s fun to watch the evolution..
Ipad is just a bigger Iphone. If you have an IPhone, you need a Mac because whatever an iPad can do for you, you can with your iPhone. But a mac or a laptop is essential for most of the people.

You totally can use external storage to edit with Final Cut Pro on the new iPad Pro. Lots of reviewers say so. I know you could not at launch, but that gremlin has been fixed. Still many more issues to resolve, but they did at least fix that one. You're not using an M4 iPad Pro in this video - that's not the new magic keyboard. Most of your findings are still valid, but it is still misleading...

it would be a lot better if we could screen mac onto the iPad if its connected to the keyboard then we can have a true mac like experience without needing macos oniPad also in apple point of view it wont cannibalize sales of ipad and mac.I have macmini and MacBook pro where I use my macmini mostly by screening it onto my MacBook but would prefer ipad to do the same as well as it could be lot more convenient given it portability .
Pretend there is no MacOS ever existed. Then we all would say iPadOS is the best. Also, pretend there is no iPadOS, then we have nothing to compare it to the MacOS. I only use iPad Pro M4 for what it is, and MacBook Pro for, nothing really. I just pretend there is no MacOS and I made peace with my iPad. It runs great for all the things I need to do. Unless you are a financial person as your main business, then the iPad is not for you. If you are a baby boomer who still working in the office, the macOS is your best bet. Anyway, just my opinion.
the problem you think its strange is because you want it to be a iMac and It is an IPAD and have to use it a certain way.. iPad users that don't use iMac say the same when using and iMac. "the iMac is Strange" iPad Pro wins all day long. Mac is just a boring computer.

It’s not a limited luxury, it has replaced by personal computer for sure. For work I use a Mac, but for everything else i use my iPad.
I own an iPad Pro, laptop and a surface pro 8. I use whatever is closest to me unless it’s mostly media consumption then of course it’s the iPad. Being honest for use case the surface pro gets more use than the laptop again unless it’s charging or not close at hand and the laptop is. On the go, I’m not lugging around a laptop when I have 2 lighter devices

The 11” doesn’t have that problem on your lap. The 11” is goated. It’s what an iPad was supposed to be. I can type 120 words per minute on the apple keyboard too so 0 compromises

The big question is why would you want it to replace your Mac? That’s like asking an artist whether a Mac can replace the iPad. The answer is almost always, yes it can but not very well. Use the right tool for the right job. For my career, neither a Mac nor an IPad would have worked since the apps I needed didn’t exist on either platform. All the tech RUclipsrs seem obsessed with turning the iPad into something it was never intended to be.
As for whether it’s worth upgrading an iPad, the same can be asked of the Mac or even the iPhone. For 99% of users, an M1 Mac or M1 iPad and probably an iPhone 13 would work just fine. The base iPad, and Mac and old iPhone are “need” items. Anything higher than those such as an iPhone 15 Pro Max, M3 Max MBP, or an iPad Pro are “want” items. If you have a limited budget, stick to need items. If you have the money, go for the want items. There is no wondering whether it’s worth upgrading.

I went with the 13 Pro 2TB. Hopefully it can handle my daily workload without lag and overheating issues. I use it daily for E-Mail, RUclips and some light porn on the weekends.
